Welcome back readers, fellow geeks and electronic gaming fans!

In this edition of the Retro Gaming Ads Blast (RGAB) series, we will take a look at another batch of retro gaming print ads from the 1980s to the early 2000s.

For the newcomers reading this, Retro Gaming Ads Blast (RGAB) looks back at the many print ads of games (console, arcade, computer and handheld) that were published in comic books, magazines, flyers, posters and newspapers long before smartphones, social media, the worldwide web and streaming became popular. To put things in perspective, people back in the 1980s to the 1990s were more trusting of print media for information and images about electronic games and related products.

With those details laid down, here is the newest batch of retro gaming print ads for you to see and enjoy…

1. Berzerk Arcade Flyer

Could you imagine being trapped deep within a maze surrounded by dangerous robots (plus one other unstoppable enemy) capable firing laser blasts at you? This was the concept behind the design of Berzerk, an arcade game released by Stern Electronics in 1980. Released at a time when science fiction became wildly popular in American entertainment, Berzerk was immersive for gamers and the multidirectional gameplay feature was captivating for many. To promote the game, Stern Electronics came up with a customized visual design that blended 2D sprite elements with a photograph of two people and some hand-drawn art pieces. The front of the flyer emphasized accurate the core concept of the game while the rear explained the technical details. They even played with their company name with the line “Stern goes berzerk!”

2. Rush’n Attack North American Arcade Flyer

During the late stages of the Cold War, Konami made a lot of military-themed video games which resonated not only with those who were already aware about the global conflict but also with gamers who craved for action and excitement. One of those games was Rush’n Attack (alternative title: Green Beret) which was released in American arcades in late-1985. Konami came up with an arcade flyer showing four people (looking like an American family) having a good time in front of an arcade cabinet, and three screenshots of the game were displayed on the lower half. Rush’n Attack – which was deliberately titled to resemble the phrase “Russian attack” due to its obvious Cold War setting – went on to succeed commercially and critically. One notable game review compared Rush’n Attack favorably with the movie Rambo: First Blood Part II.

3. Turbo Out Run North American Arcade Flyer

Following the massive success Sega achieved with Out Run in 1986, the company went on to release the follow-up Turbo OutRun three years later. As seen in their North American flyer, Sega emphasized the in-game locations, the look of the machine with the driver’s seat and steering wheel, and the excitement they can expect. Turbo OutRun went on to become successful in the arcades worldwide and it got ported to a variety of consoles and computer systems in the years that followed. On its own, the arcade flyer sparked excitement for gamers.

4. Air Duel Japanese Arcade Flyer

Released in Japanese arcades in 1990, Air Duel from Irem is an intense and fast-paced 2D sprite vertically scrolling shooter that attracted a lot of players. It had a war theme and its aesthetic has a mix of military and somewhat futuristic science fiction elements. The game’s arcade flyer featured a very intriguing artwork by Takashi Yamasaki showing two aircrafts flying over a city heading towards a massively large enemy in the distance. In my opinion, the artwork alone is pretty engaging to see and it’s more than enough to make me think about playing the game.

5. Spellbound Adaptor Print Ad

Remember back in the old days when there were hardware lockouts on game consoles that prevented users from playing games imported from different regions? In Europe, a special cheat and regional bypass cartridge called the Spellbound Adaptor was released and it allowed Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) users to bypass the lockouts and play games from overseas. The Spellbound Adaptor was notably advertised in European print media showing two sexy ladies posing with the adaptor itself (on the SNES), the television and many SNES games. The ad even includes a promo of buying the adaptor with a game of choice for only £69.95. The ad is still impactful to look at.

6. Contra III: The Alien Wars North American Print Ad

*Konami’s made a huge impression visually with this 2-page print ad promoting Contra III: The Alien Wars.*

By the time the SNES was launched in America in 1991, a lot of gamers who enjoyed Contra games on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) have been craving for a sequel on the newer console. Their dreams finally came through in early 1992 when Konami released Contra III: The Alien Wars on the SNES, and it was a lot more than visual upgrade as it had groundbreaking features connected with the game developers’ clever use of the console’s technology. Konami was already aware of Contra’s huge following in America, so they came up with an aggressive looking print ad promoting Contra III: The Alien Wars. With a red-and-black background, the ad had a variety of screenshots that were tilted to look 3D (showing what the game offered) and used a minor space for the descriptive text and image of the game box. This old print ad is one of the finest ways to promote a sequel while also emphasizing the next-generation experience fans can enjoy. This ad is a classic!

7. Apocalypse Print Ads

Believe it or not, Hollywood legend Bruce Willis actually starred in the ambitious video game titled Apocalypse. Before its 1998 released on PlayStation, Apocalypse started with the player character having an AI-controlled partner named Trey Kincaid to be played by Willis. Publisher Activision signed a multi-million Dollar deal with Bruce Willis to use his likeness and voice for the Trey character. Eventually the Trey Kincaid role was modified to be the playable character. Given the huge deal signed with the super star and the additional costs that came with game design revisions, Activision launched an aggressive marketing campaign for Apocalypse and they heavily used Bruce Willis’s name and imagery. Ultimately the game sold less than one million copies and yet Activision was satisfied with the sales which convinced them to go back to Apocalypse developer Neversoft for a new project.

8. R-Type Delta North American Print Ad

*R-Type Delta was the 4th game of the R-Type series and also the first to be made with 3D polygons.*

R-Type, the long-running series of 2D side-scrolling shooters by Irem, fully embraced 3D polygons with R-Type Delta on PlayStation in 1998. To promote the game in North America, Irem and their partner Agetec went all-in emphasizing their series shift into 3D polygonal graphics while promising new in-game weapons. Very smartly, they included positive quotes from Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM), PlayStation Magazine (PSM) and Official PlayStation Magazine (OPM) to show credibility. In recent times, an enhanced version of R-Type Delta (R-Type Delta: HD Boosted) was released on modern game console and PC.

9. Racing Lagoon Japanese Print Ad

*Have you ever played this game from SquareSoft?*

Released in 1999 for PlayStation only in Japan, Racing Lagoon was one of many games SquareSoft made for a genre other than role-playing games (RPGs). Released at a time when the PlayStation already had lots of racing games available from around the world, Racing Lagoon was a racing game that had role-playing elements mixed in. To promote it, SquareSoft made a print ad that had a night-time city vibe and they showed some screenshots with a unique visual style. The in-game story was influenced by the illegal street racing trend that happened in Japan during the 1980s.

10. Resident Evil – Code: Veronica North America Print Ads

*Truly a next-generation Resident Evil experience first launched on the Sega Dreamcast! I know some people who bought the console just to play Resident Evil – Code: Veronica.*

When Resident Evil – Code: Veronica was released on the Sega Dreamcast in Japan in February 2000, it delivered a next-generation survival horror experience to die-hard RE fans and it was easily one of the must-have games for Dreamcast owners of the time. Along the way, RE fans and Dreamcast owners in America were already anticipating the game. Capcom had an aggressive ad campaign for the game with US gamers in mind and this particular single-page print ad showed the fan-favorite characters Claire and Chris Redfield on one corner, six selected screenshots and quotes from the published game reviews of Game Informer, Next Generation and the Official Dreamcast Magazine. The 2-page print ad had the same elements but had the Redfield siblings on the 2nd page. I remember seeing these ads on a few gaming magazines and they made me think about buying a Dreamcast just to play RE – Code: Veronica. These old ads emphasized the strong business trust between Capcom and Sega (which itself lost a lot of money and credibility with the Sega Saturn consoles and many add-on devices released years prior).

First Pig Kidney Transplant Trial In Japan Could Happen As Early As 2028

Clinical trials of pig kidney transplants to humans could start as early as 2028 in two specific hospitals in Japan, according to a news report by Kyodo News. This one-of-a-kind development, if successful, could help Japan address the shortage of organ donors.

It should be recalled that a recipient of a pig kidney in the United States survived a record-breaking 271 days before the organ had to be removed. Over a hundred thousand people in America are currently waiting for organ transplants and most of them in need of kidneys.

A Japanese startup said Monday it will conduct clinical trials of pig kidney transplants to humans at two hospitals as early as 2028, which if successful would likely make them the first of their kind in the country.

It is hoped that organ transplants from pigs to humans will address the shortage of organ donors in Japan. Pig kidney transplants have previously been carried out on a trial basis in the United States and China.

According to the Meiji University venture, PorMedTec, the kidneys, which have been genetically modified to prevent organ rejection, will be transplanted at Hokkaido University Hospital in Sapporo and Shonan Kamakura General Hospital in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture.

“We want to lay the foundation of xenotransplantation in Japan,” Hiroshi Nagashima, a Meiji University professor and representative director of the company, said in a press release, referring to the surgical transfer of non-human animals’ organs to human recipients.

The startup imports genetically modified pig cells developed by U.S. biotechnology company eGenesis Inc. and produces pigs with the same features in Japan. The genes of the animal have been modified in 69 areas to prevent organs from being rejected by recipients’ bodies.

The Japanese firm said it will finalize plans for the clinical trial and hopes to promote the widespread use of the treatment for patients with severe kidney failure once manufacturing and marketing approval is granted.

Trilateral Framework Agreement Aimed At Dismantling Hezbollah Signed by US, Israel And Lebanon

Following the initial talks in Washington, the United States, Israel and Lebanon signed a trilateral framework agreement that outlines a structured process for disarming the Islamic terrorist group Hezbollah, the terrorist infrastructure and enabling the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to withdraw from Lebanon one the terrorist threat is removed, according to a news report by The Jerusalem Post.

The United States, Israel, and Lebanon signed a trilateral framework agreement aimed at combating Iran-backed Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah on Friday, after days of US-mediated talks in Washington.

According to a US State Department statement, the agreement outlines a structured process for disarming Hezbollah, dismantling terrorist infrastructure, and enabling the IDF to withdraw from Lebanon once the threat posed by Hezbollah is removed.

The agreement also established a US-facilitated trilateral Military Coordination Group for Lebanon (MCG4L) to ensure the implementation of the framework.

The US, according to the statement, will also take steps to improve the capabilities of the Lebanese Armed Forces and support Lebanese military efforts against Hezbollah.

In addition, the US pledged to contribute $100 million for humanitarian assistance to be coordinated with the United Nations.

A first step towards peace, prosperity, and mutual coexistence – US Secretary of State Marco Rubio commended Israeli and Lebanese leadership and delegations for their participation in the talks and for signing the agreement.

While Rubio noted that there is still much work ahead, he highlighted the importance of the framework and stated that the US is “honored to have played a part in bringing this together.”

“Today is the first step. This first step sometimes is the hardest one, but it’s an important one and the one we’ve taken together,” Rubio stated, adding that he hopes the agreement will bring about “a future of peace, a future of prosperity, a future of mutual coexistence.”

During the signing of the agreements, Israeli Ambassador to the US Yechiel Leiter praised the trilateral cooperation as a “historical” move towards peace between Israel and Lebanon.

“In my opening remarks four days ago, I expressed concern that this train was running off the tracks, that Iran and its proxies wanted a trainwreck,” Leiter recounted.

He continued to describe that through the work of all involved with the negotiations, “we have put the train back on the tracks, and it’s running in the right direction,” towards “real peace, where both countries will live in security; where Israel’s and Lebanon’s sovereignty will be respected, honored, and protected.”

Framework agreement a ‘major achievement for Israel,’ Netanyahu says – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded to the announcement in a video message on Friday, describing the framework as “a major achievement for the State of Israel.”

Netanyahu affirmed that as of the signing of the agreement, Israel will “remain [in] the security zone in southern Lebanon” and coordinate the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the area as the Lebanese army works to disarm Hezbollah and establish control over territory.

US Secretary Of State Rubio Warns Iran To Drop Its Fantasy Of Imposing Fees On Ships Passing Through Strait Of Hormuz

As Iran continues to be unpredictable following the deal it signed with the United States, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned the Islamic terrorist state against the fantasy of imposing fees on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, according to a Newsmax report.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday warned Iran against “the fantasy” of imposing fees on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking after meetings with Gulf Cooperation Council leaders in Bahrain, Rubio said the Trump administration will not tolerate any attempt by Tehran to charge commercial vessels for using one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.

“Fees and tolls are the same thing to me,” Rubio told reporters. “If you’re paying someone to go there, I don’t care if you call it a fee or a toll or a donation. It’s a toll.”

Rubio argued such a system would be impossible to enforce without threatening international shipping.

“Let’s say a ship says, ‘Well, I’m not going to pay the fee,’” he said. “It’s not like a toll on a road. You don’t get a ticket in the mail. They get shot at. You shoot at one ship, you sink one ship, no other ship is going to move. So that sort of system is not only unwise, it can’t happen. It’s not even workable. So you might as well abandon the fantasy now.“

The secretary said there was “zero support” among Gulf nations for any tolling system and emphasized President Donald Trump has made clear that charging for passage through the strategic waterway “cannot be a part” of any agreement with Iran.

“There isn’t a nation on Earth that supports having to pay money to go through the straits,” Rubio said, adding, “If you are charging money to use the straits, we won’t support it. We won’t tolerate it. We won’t allow it.“

Rubio’s remarks came after reports that some Iranian officials have floated charging ships for security, insurance, and other services following last week’s U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding, which temporarily restored free navigation through the strait while broader negotiations continue.

Under the agreement brokered by the Trump administration, Iran agreed to permit toll-free passage for at least 60 days as both sides pursue a broader peace arrangement.

Rubio stressed the administration is focused less on Tehran’s rhetoric than on its actions.

“We’re interested in whether or not ships are moving,” he said. “If ships are moving as they should be moving, then that’s what we’re going to judge. If this rhetoric is backed up by actual ships being threatened and ships are not moving, that’s a violation of the agreement and we’re going to have a problem with it.”

US Supreme Court Approves Trump’s Move To End Temporary Protective Status For Haitians And Other Refugees

Remember years ago when the failed US President Joe Biden welcomed a massive number of Haitians to the United States with the temporary protective status (TPS)? That finally ended when the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) approved US President Donald Trump’s authority to put a definitive stop at the TPS of the Haitians as well as other refugees living in America, according to news reports by Breitbart and CBN News. The vote was 6-3.

This development is justice for the nation and the many Americans whose lives got disrupted severely when the numerous, protected Haitians arrived in their local communities causing spikes in rents, taking job opportunities away, entering schools and the like. It also clarifies that the US President has the authority on TPS.

In a 6-3 vote, the U.S. Supreme Court has endorsed President Donald Trump’s authority to end “Temporary Protected Status” for at least 450,000 Haitian migrants welcomed by President Joe Biden.

The judges said Congress’s law bars any judicial review of the White House TPS decisions:

The TPS statute plainly bars consideration of respondents’ non-constitutional claims. It allows “no judicial review of any determination… with respect to the… termination” of a TPS designation. 8 U. S. C. §1254a(b)(5)(A). The term “determination” can be used to describe either an individual decision or the whole process leading to a final decision, and under either understanding of the term, §1254a(b)(5)(A) squarely bars all of respondents’ non-constitutional claims.

The decision is good news for many Americans, including the citizens of Springfield, Ohio. The Ohio town has been radically disrupted because the local elite welcomed at least 10,000 wage-cutting, rent-spiking, diversity-boosting Haitian migrants into the city’s jobs, homes, schools, welfare offices, and roadways.

The decision means that the Haitian migrants will lose their work permits, access to government aid, drivers’ licenses, and legal residency. In turn, employers will face fines if they keep employing the Haitians instead of Americans, and landlords will have to negotiate cheaper rents for Americans as Haitians move out of the local housing market.

Many Haitians were actually provided visas by Biden’s officials to fly from Haiti to American towns — despite the huge economic and civic harm to the millions of left-behind Haitians. The crippling outflow included many doctors, cops, teachers, and politicians.

But the decision is also an economic loss for many investors and a management headache for many employers who hired Haitian migrants instead of competing for Americans in the national labor market.

In April, Breitbart News reported that pro-TPS lobbyists had submitted a legal brief by pro-migration economists which said Biden’s 1.4 million TPS migrants from Haiti, Venezuela, and El Salvador create $20 billion in annual profits for investors.

The Supreme Court issued a key decision on the issue of immigration on Thursday, ruling that the Trump administration has the authority to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for certain refugees living in the U.S.

The immigrants affected by this case were granted Temporary Protected Status under a law passed by Congress in 1990. The program allows the Homeland Security Secretary to let people from certain countries remain and work in the U.S. when conditions back home make it unsafe to return. That same law also gives the secretary the authority to end those protections.

“It gives people protection while the country’s in turmoil or after they suffer a hurricane,” explained Border Czar Tom Homan during a press briefing Thursday.

The Trump administration first announced its plans to end TPS for Haitians in the summer of last year, and for Syrians in the fall. Those decisions were put on hold by lower courts until Thursday’s Supreme Court ruling.

“The decision creates the type of panic, in a sense, that people in our community are wondering what the best action to do now,” said Viles Dorsainvil, who runs a support center for Haitians in Springfield, Ohio.

He and his wife are also now at risk of deportation.

“We are just TPS holders and asylum seekers. So, we’ll be relying on our asylum. We have our permit in the asylum, that we will continue to work. We will continue to do what we gotta do, but we don’t know how long,” Dorsainvil said.

Thursday’s ruling was 6-3, the majority saying Congress gave the Homeland Security Secretary broad discretion over TPS, including the authority to decide when to end it.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor strongly disagreed with the ruling, taking the unusual step of reading her dissent aloud from the bench. “The consequences of today’s decision are predictable,” said Justice Sotomayor. “More people will die.”

“More people will turn back and be subjected to violence because of something they cannot or should not have to change about themselves, such as their race, religion, nationality, or political opinion.”

Following her comments, Justice Samuel Alito, who read the majority decision, remarked that, had he known she planned to read her dissent from the bench, he would have said more in defense of the majority decision.

A Look Back at Spider-Man #45 (1994)

Welcome back superhero enthusiasts, 1990s culture enthusiasts, Spider-Man fans and comic book collectors! Today we go back to the mid-1990s and to explore a part of the Marvel Comics shared universe through a tale of the Spider-Man monthly series.

As revealed in Amazing Spider-Man #388, Richard and Mary Parker – who spent some time living with Peter Parker’s family after suddenly emerging from nowhere – were not Peter’s parents but androids designed to look, act and feel human. They were life model decoys (LFDs) programmed infiltrate Peter’s life until they learn Spider-Man’s true identity. As programmed, they reported to their master the Chameleon. Just seconds before Richard revealed the secret identity, Spider-Man suddenly interfered and this led to a series of violent acts.

With those details laid down, here is a look back at Spider-Man #45, published in 1994 by Marvel Comics with a story written by Howard Mackie and drawn by the late Tom Lyle. This is the first chapter of the Pursuit storyline.

Early story

The story begins moments after the huge conflict that happened. A very broken-hearted Spider-Man realized that “Mary” and “Richard” were impostors and his actual parents have long been gone. He is also concerned about how his Aunt May will handle the truth about Richard and Mary. Deep inside him, a desire for vengeance against the Chameleon is growing.

As he swings from one building to another in New York City, Peter Parker begins to realize that his role as Spider-Man is turning into a farce. He begins his obsession of hunting down the Chameleon and stopping him until he keeps him out of his life for good…

Quality

*What you are seeing here is a very obsessive, aggressive and more violent Spider-Man. Vengeance is his motivation.*

To make things clear to everyone, this tale does not have the long-running friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Instead, we have the iconic webslinger who is deeply hurt and the pain he carries motivates him to pursue the Chameleon (who is responsible for reviving the deep pain Peter felt after his parents died). It is clearly a pursuit for vengeance and the writing by Howard Mackie is very believable.

That said, readers will not only see Peter Parker wanting vengeance but also his dark side emerge. Carrying over the tragedy that happened in Amazing Spider-Man #388, Mackie and Lyle precisely crafted a story that had a very dramatic and radically different Peter Parker. Peter even shouts at his wife Mary Jane and struggles with revealing the details of the tragedy to his beloved Aunt May. When he goes out as Spider-Man to find answers, he approaches crooks aggressively and with more violence than before. In short, Spider-Man here lacks restraint and really looks like he could become a public menace.

That said, the portrayal of a very broken Peter Parker here can be alienating even to long-time Spider-Man fans.

Along the way, the Mackie-Lyle duo managed to develop the Chameleon not only as Spider-Man’s target but also as his most cunning and very diabolical enemy yet. The Chameleon (first appearance in 1963’s Amazing Spider-Man #1) is very prominently shown here which is quite meaningful because he is the very first super villain to encounter the webslinger. The long-time villain is very organized and has set up a trap for Spider-Man. The Chameleon also has his own obsession versus Spider-Man and his personal connection with Kraven the Hunter has a lot of depth to the story. As such, there are common elements that the webslinger and the evil master of disguise share.

Conclusion

*Great work by Howard Mackie and the late Tom Lyle on expressing Peter Parker’s sadness over the loss of his parents.*

Spider-Man #45 (1994) is clearly a very engaging read even though its concept of Spider-Man wanting vengeance can be a turnoff to some readers. For one thing, the script Howard Mackie wrote has a lot of depth and Tom Lyle brought it to life with a fine art style. Having seen the 1989 movie Licence to Kill, I noticed the similarities Spider-Man has with Timothy Dalton’s James Bond when it comes to executing a private vendetta. That said, I enjoyed what was presented in this comic book. Indeed, this tale was published at a time when the dynamics of superhero storytelling in the 1990s changed dramatically moving towards tragedy, disaster and death. It is clearly a product of its time and anyone who wants to read a dark and gritty Spider-Man portrayal should go for this. As such, I am convinced to read on with the Pursuit storyline.

Overall, Spider-Man #45 (1994) is recommended.

Minority Report remains cerebral and entertaining by today’s standards and it is not surprising that it got featured in many YouTube reaction videos. #2 Close Encounter Of The Third Kind Retrospective Videos – If you are disappointed with Steven Spielberg’s latest science fiction film Disclosure Day, now is a good time to revisit his much older works with similar concepts. His 1977 film Close Encounters of the Third Kind continues to impact viewers and YouTubers which only proves there is something very unique about it. In addition, the movie shows what kind of visionary and storyteller Spielberg was when he was much younger. That said, now is a good time to watch the following retrospective videos – including movie reactions – of the sci-fi film.

#3 Sega Dreamcast – PlayStation 2 “Rivalry” Revisited – When Sega launched the Dreamcast console in the late 1990s, the company went through years of financial losses as well as tarnished reputation with both gamers and their business partners. To be fair, Sega learned from their mistakes with the Saturn console and simplified their business model to avoid the confusion they caused by releasing many add-on devices. The Dreamcast was indeed a high-quality game console and had features that were ahead of its time, although the technologies used were nowhere as advanced as what Sony came up with in the PlayStation 2. It was a 14-part storyline that was published temporarily in the four monthly Spider-Man series and in two issues of the quarterly Spider-Man Unlimited series. It was released at a time when Venom and Carnage were wildly popular and it was also an opportunity for Marvel to get the Spider-Man fans and collectors engaged when Image Comics and Valiant Comics was challenging them. As Capcom formally announced Resident Evil Veronica (the remake of 2000’s Resident Evil – Code Veronica), the woke (including the gay pride zealots) are once again attaching themselves to anything Resident Evil. As seen over the past few decades, there are lots of JRPGs released on consoles and computers that did not sell massively and had been forgotten. Many of them were only released in Japan. Those are the obscure JRPGs and in recent times, retro gamers and RPG enthusiasts had to literally search hard and dig deep to play them. #9 You, Me And The Movies React To Resident Evil: Damnation – Can’t get enough of Resident Evil? While live-action Resident Evil movies featured Milla Jovovich and had stories that were not faithful to the games, Capcom in Japan proceeded to produce their very own computer-generated RE movies to delight the fans while conveniently expanding the lore. Following the release of Resident Evil: Degeneration, the Japanese came up with Resident Evil: Damnation which featured again Leon Kennedy and had the popular Ada Wong included in the cast. A Look Back at Amazing Spider-Man #388 (1994)

Welcome back superhero enthusiasts, 1990s arts and culture enthusiasts, Spider-Man fans and comic book collectors! Today we go back to the mid-1990s to examine a small part of the Marvel Comics shared universe through a tale of the Amazing Spider-Man monthly series.

During the height of the 30^th anniversary celebration of Spider-Man in 1992, Peter Parker’s long-lost parents Richard and Mary Parker suddenly returned and their presence really altered the hero’s view of life, his marriage with Mary Jane and their family as a whole. As time passed, Peter’s aunt May became suspicious about Richard and Mary (note: scenes related to this were included in Amazing Spider-Man #386 and #387) and she went as far as hiring someone to investigate them from a distance.

With those details laid down, here is a look back at Amazing Spider-Man #388, published in 1994 by Marvel Comics with a story written by David Michelinie and drawn by Mark Bagley.

Early story

The story begins with the Vulture being upset that the youth-restoration effects he had using the juvenator machine were only temporary. As the Vulture makes a move to threaten the lady doctor who help him, the Chameleon suddenly emerged from her in front of him.

Elsewhere, Peter Parker shared with Mary Jane that he recently revealed to his parents that he is Spider-Man. After a brief chat with her, Parker leaves their home as Spider-Man to visit his aunt who has been suspicious about Richard and Mary Parker…

Quality

*The moment of truth that turned out very painful personally for Spider-Man.*

This particular tale is a tragedy which the cover art by Mark Bagley clearly showed. Beyond the cover, there is a lot more weight on the plot (which was nicely structured by Michelinie), the characters and tragedy itself.

Without spoiling plot details, I can say that the first half of the comic book has Spider-Man doing detective work and also doing the civilized approach of keeping the family together. Peter Parker’s care and concern for his aunt were naturally dramatize resulting in a human touch that should be seen. Along the way, the conspiracy was built-up gradually and the big revelation for Spider-Man (note: the truth about Richard and Mary Parker was revealed to readers long before Spider-Man learned about it) at the mid-point of the story really turned out powerful.

Even the Chameleon’s presence here is rather light, his acts of evil and diabolical agenda were powerfully portrayed. In fact, the Chameleon used his immense power of disguise that set off the disturbing events that happened in issues #386 and #387, and such revelations were integrated convincingly in this very comic book. What I found impressive was Chameleon’s ability on connecting details linking Peter Parker with Spider-Man. The Chameleon is clearly very intelligent and cunning, and this makes him a more formidable enemy for Spider-Man.

The 2^nd half of the main story is where the action really got ramped up by many notches. The action is violent and intense, and yet the Michelinie-Bagley duo managed to insert twists and notable character moments that really added power to the tragedy. This is indeed a very compelling read and it will make you think deeply about how much emotional pain Spider-Man could absorb.

This comic book also has two short stories. The first one (drawn by Ron Lim) was set in the past showing Eddie Brock who just bonded with the alien costume. While the Venom-focused short story was designed to add depth to past events in Amazing Spider-Man comic books, it ultimately felt more like a filler than a substantial piece. Only die-hard Venom fans will enjoy it.

The second short story featuring Cardiac and Chance is completely forgettable and unnecessary.

Conclusion

Amazing Spider-Man #388 (1994) tells a really tragic tale with a purpose behind it. Historically speaking, this comic book made some Spider-Man fans angry and feeling very betrayed as they believed that the 1992 return of Peter Parker’s parents marked the new age in Spider-Man storytelling. On the iconic superhero himself, this tale marked the start of a so-called dark age in which Peter Parker got emotionally broken and his life got turned upside-down. To be clear, this comic book is not a tragedy done merely for the sake of doing a tragedy…it was a creative execution to alter the status quo of Spider-Man storytelling of the era. As such, what David Michelinie and Mark Bagley did here was not only daring but also a huge risk that turned out really powerful. This tale is so significant, Marvel Comics went ahead doing an alternate version with What If #61.

Overall, Amazing Spider-Man #388 (1994) is recommended.

High-Profile Fraudster Kimble Back In The US After Getting Caught In The Philippines

Herbert Leon Kimble – one of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) most wanted fraudsters – was brought back to the United States following his arrest in the Philippines, according to a news report by GMA News. Kimble is notorious for illegal acts such as healthcare fraud, bribery, mail fraud and wire fraud to name a few. Kimble was caught at a casino in the Philippines.

To put things in perspective, posted below is the excerpt from the GMA News report. Some parts in boldface…

After his arrest in the Philippines, the US Department of Justice announced Saturday (Manila time) the capture of one of the most wanted fraudsters of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Fugitive Herbert Leon Kimble arrived in the United States after being arrested by the Philippine Bureau of Immigration’s Fugitive Search Unit at a casino in Pasig City.

According to the US DOJ, immigration agents spent several months tracking Kimble’s whereabouts before finally apprehending him.

FBI records show that on April 4, 2019, Kimble pleaded guilty in the US District Court for the District of South Carolina, Columbia Division, to conspiracy charges related to defrauding the United States, making false claims to a federal agency, mail fraud, wire fraud, healthcare fraud, and offering kickbacks and bribes in connection with the scheme. However, Kimble failed to appear for his scheduled sentencing hearing on August 27, 2024. Federal authorities then issued an arrest warrant that same day after charging him with failure to appear.

US Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche announced the arrest of Kimble, who is accused of orchestrating more than $1.2 billion in Medicare fraud—one of the largest healthcare fraud cases ever prosecuted in America.

A reward of up to $150,000 had been offered for information leading to Kimble’s arrest.

“Fleeing the United States does not mean you can flee justice. Instead of facing accountability for his $1.2 billion Medicare fraud crimes in the United States, Kimble fled to the Philippines hoping to escape justice. That plan failed. Under President Trump’s leadership, the FBI has now apprehended two fraudsters from its recently unveiled Most Wanted Fraudsters list in just two weeks, with more to come,” Blanche said in a statement.

Call centers in the Philippines – The FBI said Kimble was involved in the “improper marketing and distribution” of durable medical equipment (DME), particularly orthopedic braces.

It said Kimble ran a “sophisticated call-center-based operation” from around 2014 to March 2019, which acted as the “marketing engine for a nationwide fraud scheme” wherein individuals contacted call centers in the Philippines, DME suppliers who served as billers, and orthopedic brace suppliers or drop shippers.

“His operations focused primarily on initiating contact with Medicare beneficiaries and persuading them to request orthopedic braces for pain relief, which were frequently unnecessary and prescribed through telemedicine consultations that often lacked legitimate medical consultations,” the FBI said.

The prescriptions were sold to DME companies, the designated suppliers would ship the braces, then the DME companies would bill Medicare for reimbursement, the FBI added.

“His fraudulent healthcare enterprise resulted in more (than) $1.2 billion in Medicare charges and affected thousands of Medicare beneficiaries, many of whom were elderly victims,” the bureau said.

Most Wanted Fraudsters list – Meanwhile, FBI Director Kash Patel thanked Philippine authorities and US law enforcement partners for their efforts in capturing Kimble.

“Thank you to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and our Justice Department partners for their assistance in returning Kimble to the US to face justice. President Trump set a mandate to end the abuse of hardworking taxpayer money, and each and every day this team will be committed to delivering,” Patel said.

Israeli Officials Fear Terrorist State Iran Will Not Live Up To Deal With America

The deal between the United States and the Islamic terrorist regime of Iran has officially been signed with the goal of winding down the military conflict and starting a negotiating window of sixty days. US President Donald Trump himself sign it while attending the G7 Summit in France.

For Israeli officials however, they feared that Iran will not live up to the deal and will most likely use the 60-day window to strengthen its position, exploit potential loopholes and even prolong the process, according to a news article by The Jerusalem Post. There is no guarantee that Iran will be prevented from launching ballistic missiles at Israel.

Israeli defense officials fear Tehran will use the 60-day window to buy time and strengthen its position, with Iran expected to receive significant relief in economic sanctions and in fuel and oil trade, according to an N12 news site report.

Israeli intelligence assessments, as conveyed to the political echelon in recent days, indicate that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, most likely does not want to reach a final agreement.

In other words, the negotiations being held by the Revolutionary Guards, as well as the approval of the framework agreement, stem from a desire to secure control of the Strait of Hormuz and to receive an economic boost from the United States.

Thus, Iran will aim to prolong the process and avoid rushing to reach a final agreement, the officials fear.

“We should not expect anything else from a vengeful regime. It would be very surprising if Iran does not invest all its efforts and tricks to shorten its reach to nuclear weapons, under the auspices of the talks,” a senior defense official said to News 12, expressing their concern about what Tehran will do during this 60-day window.

Lack of transparency from Washington concerns government – Furthermore, Israel’s defense establishment is becoming increasingly concerned about a lack of transparency from the Trump administration regarding the Memorandum of Understanding with Iran set to be signed in Switzerland on Friday, sources told N12 News on Wednesday.

Officials are also concerned about how the interim period will unfold, with Iran expected to face significant economic sanctions and fuel and oil relief.

Israeli intelligence assessments suggest that Iran may seek to delay negotiations on the nuclear issue while using the time to shorten its breakout timeline toward a nuclear weapon. Conversely, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said that Iran will begin negotiations on the nuclear issue “on the very day we sign the MoU,” according to the report.

The US’s withholding of details in the agreement, reportedly out of concern that Israeli leaks could derail Friday’s signing, points to the extent of the current divergence between Washington and Jerusalem on Iran, N12 reported.

In fairness to the United States, President Trump officially stated that if the terrorist regime of Iran wants to change the peace agreement or fails to comply, American will “go back to shooting at them, dropping bombs on their head.”

Trump also contrasted the new deal with the Obama-era JCPOA, arguing the previous administration tried to “bribe their way out of it.”
