Japan, voted the “world’s most favorite destination” by readers of Condé Nast Traveler last year, received 21.08 million foreign visitors in the first half of the year, down 2% from the same period a year earlier, marking the country’s first decline in inbound tourism for the January-June period in five years.

The drop was largely driven by a sharp decline in arrivals from mainland China after Beijing advised its citizens against traveling to Japan, while strong growth from South Korea helped cushion the decline, Japan Today reported.

Mainland Chinese arrivals plunged 56.4% year-on-year to 2.06 million in the first half, while visitors from South Korea rose 18.6% to 5.68 million, and from Taiwan increased 20.9% to 3.97 million.

Japan’s parliament on Friday enacted a divisive law introducing criminal penalties for desecrating the national flag, achieving a key legislative goal of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in the current Diet session.

The ruling parties argued the law was needed because Japan already criminalized desecration of foreign flags but had no equivalent provision covering its own. Some opposition parties and legal experts criticized the measure, saying it may infringe on freedom of expression and could be unconstitutional.

The bill, jointly submitted by the ruling coalition of the Liberal Democratic Party and Japan Innovation Party, along with the opposition Democratic Party for the People and Sanseito, cleared the House of Councillors.

The Japanese government on Wednesday tripled the departure tax to 3,000 yen ($18) per person to fund measures against issues arising from the surge in inbound tourism.

Fees for foreigner visitors who need visas to enter Japan were also hiked on Wednesday, rising fivefold to 15,000 yen for single-entry and 30,000 yen for multiple entries. Meanwhile, on the same day, the government reduced passport application fees for Japanese nationals to make up for the added burden from the departure tax.

The tax is collected through travel ticket purchases, regardless of the passenger’s nationality. The government will use the tax income primarily to finance measures aimed at easing congestion, such as setting up designated areas at popular photo spots that are often crowded with foreign tourists.

It will also support regional tourism initiatives, such as turning local railways into tourist attractions and renovating station buildings, in an effort to attract visitors away from heavily congested areas.

According to the Meiji University venture, PorMedTec, the kidneys, which have been genetically modified to prevent organ rejection, will be transplanted at Hokkaido University Hospital in Sapporo and Shonan Kamakura General Hospital in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture.

“We want to lay the foundation of xenotransplantation in Japan,” Hiroshi Nagashima, a Meiji University professor and representative director of the company, said in a press release, referring to the surgical transfer of non-human animals’ organs to human recipients.

The startup imports genetically modified pig cells developed by U.S. biotechnology company eGenesis Inc. and produces pigs with the same features in Japan. The genes of the animal have been modified in 69 areas to prevent organs from being rejected by recipients’ bodies.

The Japanese firm said it will finalize plans for the clinical trial and hopes to promote the widespread use of the treatment for patients with severe kidney failure once manufacturing and marketing approval is granted.

US Supreme Court Approves Trump’s Move To End Temporary Protective Status For Haitians And Other Refugees

Remember years ago when the failed US President Joe Biden welcomed a massive number of Haitians to the United States with the temporary protective status (TPS)? That finally ended when the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) approved US President Donald Trump’s authority to put a definitive stop at the TPS of the Haitians as well as other refugees living in America, according to news reports by Breitbart and CBN News. The vote was 6-3.

This development is justice for the nation and the many Americans whose lives got disrupted severely when the numerous, protected Haitians arrived in their local communities causing spikes in rents, taking job opportunities away, entering schools and the like. It also clarifies that the US President has the authority on TPS.

In a 6-3 vote, the U.S. Supreme Court has endorsed President Donald Trump’s authority to end “Temporary Protected Status” for at least 450,000 Haitian migrants welcomed by President Joe Biden.

The judges said Congress’s law bars any judicial review of the White House TPS decisions:

The TPS statute plainly bars consideration of respondents’ non-constitutional claims. It allows “no judicial review of any determination… with respect to the… termination” of a TPS designation. 8 U. Many Haitians were actually provided visas by Biden’s officials to fly from Haiti to American towns — despite the huge economic and civic harm to the millions of left-behind Haitians. The crippling outflow included many doctors, cops, teachers, and politicians.

But the decision is also an economic loss for many investors and a management headache for many employers who hired Haitian migrants instead of competing for Americans in the national labor market.

The Supreme Court issued a key decision on the issue of immigration on Thursday, ruling that the Trump administration has the authority to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for certain refugees living in the U.S.

The immigrants affected by this case were granted Temporary Protected Status under a law passed by Congress in 1990. The program allows the Homeland Security Secretary to let people from certain countries remain and work in the U.S. when conditions back home make it unsafe to return. That same law also gives the secretary the authority to end those protections.

“It gives people protection while the country’s in turmoil or after they suffer a hurricane,” explained Border Czar Tom Homan during a press briefing Thursday.

“We are just TPS holders and asylum seekers. So, we’ll be relying on our asylum. We have our permit in the asylum, that we will continue to work. We will continue to do what we gotta do, but we don’t know how long,” Dorsainvil said.

Thursday’s ruling was 6-3, the majority saying Congress gave the Homeland Security Secretary broad discretion over TPS, including the authority to decide when to end it.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor strongly disagreed with the ruling, taking the unusual step of reading her dissent aloud from the bench. “The consequences of today’s decision are predictable,” said Justice Sotomayor. “More people will die.”

“More people will turn back and be subjected to violence because of something they cannot or should not have to change about themselves, such as their race, religion, nationality, or political opinion.”

Following her comments, Justice Samuel Alito, who read the majority decision, remarked that, had he known she planned to read her dissent from the bench, he would have said more in defense of the majority decision.

Israel and the Philippines have agreed to deepen ties with each other on the field of technology which will open new paths of investment and partnerships between Filipino and Israeli companies, according to a news report by The Daily Tribune.

The Philippines and Israel are expanding cooperation in technology, with Israeli firms seeking partnerships with Philippine companies in areas ranging from network management and cybersecurity to connectivity and aerospace software.

The push was highlighted during the Israel Mobile Delegation to the Philippines’ business-to-business forum held Tuesday in Bonifacio Global City, where Israeli industry leaders met with local stakeholders to explore partnerships and advance digital connectivity and network resilience.

The forum, themed “Harnessing Innovation for Network Resilience,” featured five Israeli companies: Amdocs, Cato Networks, Gilat Satellite Networks Ltd., Spacecom and Symmetrium.

The initiative aims to connect Filipino and Israeli firms based on market demand while providing a framework to strengthen business cooperation between the two countries.

“We see a great interest from the Philippine system in Israel, which emerges in many fields,” said Ofek Venecianer, economic counselor at the Israeli Embassy.

“It’s not just coming from Israel. It’s going from agriculture, cybersecurity to mobile. This event is specifically for mobile. [I] can say that the Philippine companies understand the unique value of the Israeli companies. It’s very advanced,” she added.

Venecianer said Israeli companies view the Philippines as a promising market for expansion.

“Since Israel is a small country, all the Israeli companies know that they need to scale up,” she said.

“When you look for countries where they can scale up, the Philippines is definitely a good fit for the Israeli market. Israeli companies are very much looking forward to it.”

Resiliency – A key focus of the forum was network resilience, an area where Israel sees opportunities to contribute to the Philippine telecommunications sector.

“In the end of the day, resiliency is like a state of mind,” Venecianer said. “It can be a different strategy, tackle different challenges.”

She said Israel’s experience in emergency response and critical infrastructure management could help strengthen the resilience of the Philippines’ mobile ecosystem, adding that cybersecurity remains one of Israel’s leading sectors.

Matching the need – Israeli Ambassador to the Philippines Dana Kursh said future cooperation will be guided by the specific needs of the Philippines.

“When it comes to the sectors, at the end of the day, it’s just matching the need,” she said.

“And the need when it comes to resiliency, especially at this time of the year, it’s crucial.”

Kursh said opportunities for collaboration exist across agriculture, health, education, cybersecurity and other sectors, with innovation and technology serving as key enablers.

“President Marcos himself is very loud and clear in his prioritizing generally—he says two words. It’s innovation and technology. We have to weave innovation and technology to each one of those sectors in order to flourish,” she said.

The Philippines itself is having a disappointing time this year with weakening economic growth, rapid inflation, and the recent embarrassment that happened at the United Nations (UN). Even though the current officials of the government cannot realize the truth, the Philippines really needs Israel as a long-term partner.

At the same time, I encourage you all to realize the truth that Israel is the land God designated specifically for the Jewish people (read Genesis 35:10-12) and His command must be followed without hesitation. If you want to be blessed further by the Lord, do so by loving and blessing the Jewish people (Genesis 12:1-3). I did my part when I was in Israel. Also, let me remind you all that the ties between the Jews and Christians are truly biblical!

The embassy on June 3 unveiled the Israel-funded digital literacy center, which provided computer desktops, educational materials, and coding software, in celebration of Israel’s 78th Independence Day.

To all my readers, I encourage you to pray to the Lord for further collaboration between Israel and the Philippines so that the quality of education and cybersecurity in the country will improve. Within Southeast Asia, the Philippines is having difficulty competing with its neighbors on economics, tourism, education, cybersecurity and other important matters. Filipinos today might not realize it yet but it is clear that having Israel as a partner is essential.

I encourage you all to pray to the Lord God in support of Israel, to love and bless the Jewish people, and pray for the peace of Jerusalem.

Always be the fearless and aggressive church of Lord Jesus!
