Welcome back Xbox fans, Resident Evil fans and fellow geeks!

This past weekend, Capcom unveiled Resident Evil Veronica which is a modern remake of Resident Evil – Code: Veronica. Already a lot of gamers and Resident Evil fans are talking about the remake which will be released on the Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X/S some time in 2027.

Given Capcom’s record of making ambitious remakes of past Resident Evil games, Resident Evil Veronica has long been rumored to have been in development. Among the RE fans, Resident Evil – Code Veronica was memorable and yet it had certain elements that made it divisive (example: the annoying voice acting for Steve Burnside). As such, many viewed Code Veronica as the one game that really has to be remade and Capcom has only one chance to make a better and more definitive Code Veronica.

Originally released on the Sega Dreamcast way back in 2000, Resident Evil – Code Veronica was not just a follow-up to the popular Resident Evil 2…it was also a technological marvel as it had fully polygonal environments, more detailed polygonal characters and more immersive cinematic cutscenes. It was truly a next-generation RE experience for many gamers and I myself wanted a Dreamcast just to play it. The game also had Claire Redfield and her brother Chris as the playable major characters and both of them are still fan-favorites.

Going back to the trailer above, it is clear Capcom is making Resident Evil Veronica a darker, grittier and more horrific tale than the original game. The shots of Rockfort Island look very creepy, even nightmarish. While Claire Redfield has been revealed, Chris Redfield, Alfred Ashford, Steve Burnside and Alexa Ashford have not. Still, fans already pointed out that the masked man who grabbed Claire is Hunk (often identified with Resident Evil 2). Zombies were shown in a glimpse but the other monsters from the original game have yet to be shown.

Capcom describes Resident Evil Veronica as follows:

Resident Evil Veronica is a remake of 2000’s Resident Evil Code: Veronica. This new title preserves the essence of the original game, while introducing modernized gameplay, a reimagined storyline, and vividly detailed graphics.

In 2027, madness and intrigue, love and hate all combine to create a chilling new entry in survival horror.

3 months have passed since the biological disaster in Raccoon City. Claire Redfield, having survived along with Leon S. Kennedy and Sherry Birkin, travels to France in search of her brother, Chris Redfield.

However, what awaits her is not a reunion with her brother, but the Umbrella special forces unit responsible for the incident. They capture Claire and transport her to a mysterious island.

Now Claire must make a desperate attempt to escape the remote Rockfort Island, which due to another biological disaster, has transformed into a living hellscape of survival horror.

Resident Evil Veronica is set for release on game consoles and PC in 2027. Capcom has yet to show actual gameplay.

That said, I am more nostalgic about the original Scary Movie of 2000 and that film is significant as there are many retrospective videos about it in YouTube. As such, I posted below the selected videos of Scary Movie (2000) for your enjoyment.

#2 How Tekken 3 Was Made Possible On PlayStation – When I first played Tekken 3 in the arcades in 1997, I was already an avid fan of Tekken 2 which I played a lot on the PlayStation console. Back then, I wondered how Namco would be able to port Tekken 3 on PlayStation are the arcade version had much more powerful hardware. A year later, Tekken 3 was released on PlayStation and I played it a lot. The more I played it, the more impressed I was with how the game looked and felt on PlayStation. Not only that, Tekken 3 on PlayStation had features that the original arcade version did not offer. #3 1990s NBA Plays That Are Still Great To Watch – Remember how exciting NBA basketball action was back in the 1990s? Back in those days, the Internet was slowly emerging and there obviously was no social media to amplify the great NBA moments. The limited theatrical releases did not stop the movie from achieving good box office numbers and it went on to sell a lot on DVD and Blu-ray later. #1 Maximum Carnage Revisited – With Spider-Man, Venom and Carnage all in high demand in 1993, Marvel Comics launched the 14-part Maximum Carnage storyline published on the four Spider-Man monthly comic book series and the quarterly Spider-Man Unlimited series. Carnage back then was a still new super villain who is more insane and more bloodthirsty than even Venom. Maximum Carnage has a divisive reception among fans and comic book collectors. Some called it the worst Spider-Man storyline while others found it exceptional as the chaos in New York City attracted other Marvel superheroes – notably Captain America – to help Spider-Man solve the crisis. Regardless of opinion, Maximum Carnage made an impact on pop culture and it got its own official video game adaptation. #2 The World’s Largest Truck Stop Diner – While I have visited the United States a number of times since 1989, I never had the opportunity to spend time at a truck stop diner nor have I ever experienced traveling long distances in a truck. Having seen truck stop diners (or rest places for truckers) on videos and on TV, I noticed those places have a unique vibe, its own culture and assorted meals customers can enjoy. As such, I urge you to watch the video below and pay attention to the details.

#3 You, Me And The Movies React To Scary Movie (2000) – In November of 2000, I saw Scary Movie in the local cinema here in the Philippines and almost all the seats were filled. That film was released in America in July that same year and it became a surprise box office hit. Even though it was not heavily promoted here in the Philippines, it still attracted a lot of local moviegoers upon opening. Regardless, the Keenen Ivory Wayans-directed movie was a mature parody of varied horror movies (notably the Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer movies) and its success made Anna Faris popular. Now that the movie is over a quarter-century old, one has to wonder if it still has the power to entertain viewers, especially those who missed out on it. #4 Ashleigh Burton Reacts To Patriot Games – Recently, Ashleigh Burton posted her reaction video of the 1992 movie Patriot Games starring Harrison Ford as Jack Ryan. Apart from its reputation in American film history, The Thin Man also resulted in five sequels. #1 The Ring Reaction Videos – When The Ring (an American remake of the 1998 film Ringu) was released in cinemas in 2002, it had a huge impact on many moviegoers as it scared them and made them think that Asian horror can be adapted by Western filmmakers to entertain a larger, English-oriented audience worldwide. In fact, The Ring sparked a wave of American remakes of established horror films from Asia. The movie also made Naomi Watts a movie star. There are viewers who enjoyed the subtle yet creepy approach to horror by the 2002 film and there are those who find it superior to the Japanese original. #2 Batman versus Predator Revisited – Back in the early 1990s, I saw issues of the huge crossover mini-series Batman versus Predator displayed on shelves on local comic book stores, and each one cost a lot of money! #3 Project Sylpheed Examined – First released in Japan in 2006, Project Sylpheed was a science fiction shooter game that was released by Square Enix exclusively on the Xbox 360 console. I always wanted to play that game’s English version (released in 2007) but I never had the opportunity to buy it. Project Sylpheed was the third game of its franchise and it was the successor to the original Silpheed game of the 1980s. Believe it or not, the game still looks great by today’s standards and the vibrant colors and stylish visual elements made it stand out nicely among 3D shooters. #4 Ranting For Vengeance Slams Jon Bernthal’s Punisher And The Woke Mob – When I first think about the Punisher who first appeared in comics long ago, I think of a very hard-edged vigilante who wages a dangerous war against criminals on his own terms. In the 21st century, we now have a live-action Punisher who drifted away from his comic book legacy and woke Disney now fully dictates Marvel Comics. Along the way, the current Punisher actor Jon Bernthal is woke and supports the LGBTQ community and its agenda. #5 Rice Ball Craze In Japan – In Japan, rice balls are popular and there is nothing like the enjoyment of consuming rice with seaweed wrapping and ingredients mixed in. From time to time, rice balls get discounted and there is always an influx of buyers who pursue them with good taste and better value in mind. Better than Streaming: Do You Have Ben-Hur 4K Blu-Ray In Your Collection?

Welcome back fellow geeks, Blu-ray collectors and movie buffs!

I previously blogged about what was back then the upcoming release of the 4K Blu-ray of the classic and multi-awarded movie Ben-Hur (1959). In recent times, my copy of Ben-Hur 4K Blu-ray arrived and having replayed the movie using my Xbox Series X console, I can say that I had a grand experience watching it and it looks better than ever!

To begin with, my set came with two 4K Blu-ray discs (one disc with 100 Gigabytes and the other with 66 Gigabytes in capacity) that carried the movie in two parts in native 4K visuals (there was an intermission in the film itself). The other disc (50 Gigabytes) contained mainly the special features and extras which should delight the long-time fans and moviegoers who want to learn more about the movie, who was who and what the film’s history was about.

This is the first 4K Blu-ray disc which contains the first portion of the movie of 2 hours and 20 minutes. Behind it is the 2nd 4K Blu-ray disc and the special features-only disc (green).

With regards to my personal viewing experience, I can say that Ben-Hur looks very stunning in native 4K visuals. With the 4K resolution, I was able to spot some tiny details I did not notice before. The colors look more vibrant compared to what I saw on DVD and on cable TV, and the same can be said about the clarity (the lighting and contrasting were adjusted with better visuals in mind). There is also a boost on the sharpness.

I did not spot any visual blemishes and the all the way until the very end, the film looked more lively than ever before. That said, the famous chariot scene is at its greatest in native 4K. Not only that, the great cinematography captured by the team of director William Wyler also looks better than ever. For a preview of how much an improvement Ben-Hur 4K Blu-ray is over the previous Blu-ray disc release, watch the video below and look closely at the still images compared.

Adding more impact to the visuals, unsurprisingly, are the very solid performances of Charlton Heston as Judah Ben-Hur, Stephen Boyd as the antagonistic Messala of the evil Roman Empire, Haya Harareet as Esther and Hugh Griffith as the loud Arab to name a few. The actors’ performances deserve your attention, especially when it comes to following the story and remembering the personal directions each character took and how they developed over time.

It is now safe to say that the visuals of Ben-Hur 4K Blu-ray are truly excellent and the extra stuff provide good enough value for those who want more from the movie. I am very happy with Ben-Hur 4K Blu-ray and I will replay it again soon. Viewing the classic movie in native 4K and with lively colors is a grand experience which streaming cannot match! It is easily one of the very best movies in my 4K Blu-ray collection now!

#1 Dead Rising Revisited – I can hardly believe that it will be twenty years since I first play Dead Rising on a rented Xbox 360 console. Released by Capcom in August 2006, Dead Rising is a zombie apocalypse adventure game developed by a Japanese team with Keiji Inafune (Mega Man) as producer. As its story was mainly set in a shopping mall, the game was easily compared with the Dawn of the Dead movies. When I first played it, I was hooked as the gameplay was pretty playable and the in-game action was entertainingly exaggerated. That said, now is a good time to revisit Dead Rising with the video below.

#2 The Binions In Las Vegas –I have toured Las Vegas twice in my life. Still, I never actually visited Binion’s Gambling Hall and Hotel which is located in Downtown Las Vegas on the Fremont Street Experience. Historically, it is know as the place where the World Series of Poker started and it had a unique gambling atmosphere with classic table games and low-limit slots. However, if you look even deeper into the history of the Binions place and the family that originally owned, there is something darker and intriguing to discover. Watch and learn from the video below.

#3 Night Of The Living Dead (1968) Revisited – What is there to say about the original Night of the Living Dead movie from 1968? The George Romero-directed zombie apocalypse movie has long been declared as the most definitive zombie horror movie and was considered as the turning point in horror film-making. As such, it is not surprising to see the movie (in public domain since the beginning) featured in multiple movie reaction videos and retrospective videos on YouTube. For your curiosity and enjoyment, watch the videos below.

#4 Notable Places Beneath Tokyo Tower – The last time I toured Japan was way back in 1997. During that same trip, I visited Tokyo Tower and enjoyed a fine view of the city several feet above ground. As our city tour moved on a somewhat tight schedule, I was not able to fully explore Tokyo Tower. That said, Nippon TV posted recently a video about the places to shop, visit and dine beneath the famous tower. Watch and learn from the video below.

#5 Street Fighter Alpha 2 SNES Version Examined – Back in 1996, I was an avid arcade gamer and Street Fighter Alpha 2 was my favorite among the many 2D fighting games available in local arcades. In late-1996, copies of Street Fighter Alpha 2 running on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) were displayed in game stores which caught my attention because I never expected the console to be capable of processing the game and making it playable (note: Street Fighter Alpha games of the time were prominently released on PlayStation and Sega Saturn). To examine closely the quality of the SNES port of Street Fighter Alpha 2, watch the video below.

#6 Democrats’ Chuck Schumer Proved Himself Pathetic – Do you have a high-ranking representative or leader in government who does NOT care about you and the nation at all? Welcome back Xbox fans, Japanese role-playing game (JRPG) enthusiasts, Final Fantasy fans and fellow geeks!

Over a week ago, Square Enix officially released Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade for Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S plus Windows PC and Xbox Cloud Gaming. For Xbox gamers who love JRPGs and the Final Fantasy games franchise, this development marked the end of a years-long wait for the big budget remake of Final Fantasy VII to be released on their consoles.

This is Aerith Gainsborough in the big-budget remake?

This early, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade on Xbox is already making a positive impact as it launched strongly on the Top Paid Xbox sales charts ranking 9th place overall. The PureXbox.com news article states as follows:

There are multiple reasons why FF7 Remake will have sold well on Xbox, even beyond the fact that it’s one of the most requested Xbox releases of the past few years. For one, it’s available at the pretty low launch price of just £39.99 / $39.99, and as a “limited early” bonus, it even comes with the original version of Final Fantasy 7 as well. Don’t forget it’s an Xbox Play Anywhere title too, which means you get a free PC version when buying it on console.

Meanwhile, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade co-director Naoki Hamaguchi expressed his happiness that Xbox gamers are enjoying the game and he already confirmed that the remaining chapters of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy will be released on Xbox. Read his Twitter post below.

Final Fantasy VII Legacy and Cultural Significance

Historically, the original Final Fantasy VII was released on PlayStation in 1997 and it became a massive commercial juggernaut which arguably made the JRPG more popular among Western gamers. Characters like Cloud Strife, Barret Wallace, Tifa Lockhart, Aerith Gainsborough, and Yuffie Kisaragi became wildly popular not only among Final Fantasy fans but with JRPG enthusiasts. Sephiroth meanwhile became one of the most defining villains of video gaming.

Battles in the game are often fast, intense and filled with visual spectacle.

The road to the big budget remake was a long one and it eventually Final Fantasy VII Remake was released as an exclusive game on PlayStation 4 in 2020. A year later, the upgraded version called Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade was released on PlayStation 5.

Xbox gamers who purchase Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade can expect the following: Quests, mini-games, and missions set in expanded areas of Midgar. There are also some new characters and content that adds even more depth to the story.

I’m Having Fun Playing Dig Dug On My Xbox Series X

Welcome back Xbox fans, retro gaming enthusiasts and fellow geeks!

I’ve been playing Atari 50 on my Xbox Series X for more than a year now and I can say it is a blast of retro gaming fun. In addition, the DLCs added even more fun, more variety and gave me insight about the production history of the games.

In recent times, I purchased the Namco Legendary Pack for Atari 50 and it came with 3 Atari Pac-Man games (for Atari 2600, Atari 5200 and Atari 8-bit), the American arcade versions of Dig Dug and Xevious, and the home console versions of Galaga, Xevious, Galaxian and Dig Dug.

Among those games, I chose to play the arcade version of Dig Dug which I never previously played. Indeed, I visited the video arcades a lot when I was younger and I do remember passing by a few machines of Dig Dug. I simply never took the opportunity to play Namco’s arcade classic back then. By the late 1990s, Dig Dug was simply no longer offered by local arcade operators.

After installing the Namco Legendary Pack, I started playing the arcade version of Dig Dug on my Xbox Series X using the Xbox controller. Even though I rushed in viewing the Xbox control scheme, Dig Dug still turned out to be simple and very playable at the same time.

In the game, you play the character Dig Dug (Taizo Hori) who has to dig tunnels in an underground maze. You have to eliminate the enemies/monsters deep within which are the Pookas (red and spherical beings that wear large goggles) and the Fygars (fire-breathing dragons). To eliminate an enemy, you have to use an air pump to physically connect with it and then inflate it until it explodes. Another way of eliminating an enemy is by crushing them with falling rocks which requires a bit of strategy as you are always chased.

Even without new tunnels made, there are times when enemies are able to penetrate through the soil to emerge near you. If you are in a tunnel with an enemy present, you will often get chased. Be mindful that for every level you progress into, enemies move faster and their numbers gradually increase.

Here, I managed to have a huge rock fall down and hit the Fyger and Pooka that chased me earlier. Pulling off this move requires strategy.
As you inflate an enemy and there are still more enemies near you, you have to be mindful that a Pooka can penetrate through the soil and emerge in a tunnel near you.

Having played Dig Dug a number of times already with my Xbox copy of Atari 50, I can say that I am really enjoying the classic arcade game from Namco. Historically, Dig Dug as planned and designed by Masahisa Ikegami who was assisted by Shigeru Yokoyama (Galaga). The game’s programmers were Shouichi Fukatani and Toshio Sakai, while the art was done by Hiroshi Ono, and the music was composed by Yuriko Keino.

At the 11th round, the game has turned much more challenging as the monsters moved faster and they can be overwhelming.

You might be wondering why was Dig Dug (in arcade and console ports) and those other Namco classic games released in a DLC package for the Atari 50 collection recently? This is because Atari and Namco formed a business partnership in Japan when the American company established its presence there with Atari Japan. In fact, Namco started shifting into video gaming because of Atari. As for Dig Dug, it debuted in Japanese arcades in March 1982 and was brought to American arcades with Atari as the distributor (note: a licensing deal with Namco was signed).

As already recorded in history, Dig Dug became a huge critical and commercial success in both Japan and the United States. While the game emerged as the 2nd highest grossing arcade game in Japan for 1982, Atari sold more than 22,000 Dig Dug arcade cabinets and generated over $46 million in sales that same year. With big success achieved, it was not surprising to see Atari release ports of Dig Dug on the Atari 2600, Atari 5200 and Atari 8-bit computers.

If you are looking for a great movie to add to your 4K Blu-ray, be aware that the 1959 classic film Ben-Hur will be released at last on 4K Blu-ray format (including the limited edition Steelbook 4K Blu-ray) on February 17, 2026! The good news here is that the visuals are in native 4K and pre-orders are being accepted already.

For the newcomers reading this, the 1959 Ben-Hur film is one of the greatest historical epics Hollywood ever made and it won eleven Academy Awards for excellence and great artistry. The film starred the iconic Charlton Heston and other cast members include Stephen Boyd, Haya Harareet and Hugh Griffith to name a few.

I have seen Ben-Hur a lot of times starting with the DVD release of the early 2000s and subsequently on cable TV. It is indeed a great film and I personally am interested in acquiring  Ben-Hur (1959) 4K Blu-ray someday. I can only speculate how the film will turnout visually with the all-new restoration. Will the native 4K visuals of Ben-Hur look sharper, clearer and more detailed than its Blu-ray release? We can only wait and find out.

Based on the Blu-ray.com announcement, Ben-Hur (1959) 4K Blu-ray has several special features that I saw on its DVD release a long time ago. Most notably, there are two brand new features: Ben-Hur: Anatomy of an Epic, and the Cinematography of Scale.

And I want to point what is very obvious here…the upcoming 4K Blu-ray clearly does not have the most notable collector’s stuff of the Ben-Hur Ultimate Collector’s Edition Blu-ray set of 2011. The said set (currently priced a little more than $50 via Amazon) has the 64-page hardcover production art book, the 128-page hardcover Charlton Heston: The Ben-Hur Diaries, and even the 1925 Ben-Hur silent movie.

Significance of Ben-Hur

As some of you know already, I am a person of faith and I have uncompromising faith in Lord Jesus, in the Holy Bible and I stand with Israel. That said, what I don’t like in Ben-Hur (1959) are the FICTIONAL PORTRAYALS of Lord Jesus which include Ben-Hur’s encounters with Him. This is because Judah Ben-Hur is a FICTIONAL CHARACTER and the same can be said about most of the other characters in the film. Ben-Hur’s story is entirely fictional written by Lew Wallace to parallel the life of Lord Jesus while showing different parts of Israel and the evil Roman Empire through the eyes of Judah Ben-Hur.

In other words, the epic Lew Wallace wrote is absolutely NOT BIBLICAL even though he included scenes about the Nativity, the crucifixion of Lord Jesus and more. If you want the truthful record of Lord Jesus – the Savior and Hope of ALL nations – then you should stick with the Holy Bible. With the biblical teachings, you can deepen your faith in Lord Jesus, stand united with Israel, learn to love the Jewish people and pray for the peace of Jerusalem. Always remember that the ties between Jews and Christians are biblical.

In fairness to William Wyler and the filmmakers, they did their best to be respectful to Lord Jesus by not fully revealing His face and showing Him doing good (example: helping a suffering Ben-Hur who called out to God). Clearly the people responsible for the movie practiced caution when doing fictional portrayals of the Messiah.

While it has its flaws with regards to dramatizing biblical scenes, Lord Jesus and other elements of history of both Rome and Israel, Ben-Hur of 1959 is a classic movie that must be seen. Some people who saw it only remember it only because the grand chariot race which is still one of the greatest cinematic spectacles ever shown. Even though it is fictional and tries to be release by linking with parts of the Holy Bible and history, Ben-Hur has a story and great performances that deserve your attention. That said, Ben-Hur (1959) 4K Blu-ray is worth anticipating.

The chariot race in the movie is still very memorable and great to replay. It was done WITHOUT computer-generated images, the stunts and racing were executed with a lot of risks, and a lot of discipline was involved in filming it.
