A Look Back at X-Men 2099 #24 (1995)

Welcome back, superhero enthusiasts, 1990s culture enthusiasts, X-Men fans and comic book collectors! Today we revisit the Marvel Comics shared universe through one of the many tales of the X-Men 2099 monthly series.

One of the things I enjoyed the most about the X-Men 2099 series was its expansion of the 2099 universe lore as well as the portrayal of uncertainty that mutants deal with in the more desolate parts of America (far away from Spider-Man 2099 and Punisher 2099). Along the way, the futuristic X-Men themselves were really torn down by a series of unfortunate events that includes the departure of their founder and leader Xi’an (eventually Controller X of the Theater of Pain). With the team members separated by circumstances, they were given their own tales and character development periods.

With those details laid down, here is a look back at X-Men 2099 #24, published by Marvel Comics in 1995 with a story written by John Francis Moore and drawn by Ron Lim.

Early story

The story begins in southern California where the Slaughterhouse gets shaken by the force of a gamma bomb that detonated far away. Inside the facility, Quiver and Sham struggle as they sneak carefully. They intend to escape even though the odds are against them.

Nearby, the demonic Theater of Pain leader Brimstone Love strikes Junkpile (now with SHIELD serving the new President Doom 2099) hard and seriously damages him. With Junkpile down, the evil leader believes that Doom’s best is a failure and the Theater of Pain has nothing to fear from him. Brimstone Love issues an order to have Junkpile disposed.

Several feet below the ground, Skullfire and Luna find themselves contained after getting captured. For Luna, Xi’an is a lost cause and she prefers to find Shakti and escape. Skullfire, however, insists on pursuing Xi’an even though their situation looks very hopeless. As the two try to escape, they end up facing the muses of the Theater of Pain’s bloodsport arenas…Euphoria, Felicity and Bliss. Luna was previously one of them…

Quality

Being the comic book that immediately precedes issue #25, there is a lot of creative stuff here that X-Men 2099 fans will enjoy. The Moore-Lim duo took their time in setting up the eventual restoration of the futuristic X-Men as a team while carefully telling the dangerous events they will face with the Theater of Pain standing in their way.

Fans can find small moments that can be enjoyable or even intriguing to discover such as Luna facing off with her Theater of Pain “sisters” of long ago, the reuniting of Bloodhawk with Meanstreak and Krystalin followed by the justification behind their decision to get involved, and more. What I find very compelling to read is Shakti’s interaction with Controller X (Xi’an behind the mask obsessively serving the Theater of Pain) and the rising danger the Theater’s operation is brewing. There is richness in the dialogue between Shakti and Xi’an, and the symbolic division between them – Shakti representing the X-Men and their former leader Xi’an now serving the evil ones – is really powerful to see.

The storytelling as a whole has a lot of depth behind it, and the build-up of the events is undeniably powerful. As the story progressed, the tension also grew stronger and you can feel the danger that awaits the futuristic X-Men.

Conclusion

X-Men 2099 #24 (1995) succeeds a lot on setting-up the big conflict of issue #25 and it also sets in motion the eventual reuniting of the X-Men. Along the way, there are small details here and there that will compel you to revisit previous X-Men 2099 issues. Brimstone Love’s evil was emphasized more here and Controller X/Xi’an’s determination to serve him and make a lot of people suffer under the Theater’s operation added a lot of tension to the plot. Consider this a very important read before reading X-Men 2099 #25.

Overall, X-Men 2099 #24 (1995) is recommended.

28 Foreign Nationals in California Charged for Registering to Vote Illegally in Elections

Almost thirty foreign nationals living in California were charged by the United States Department of Justice for registering to vote illegally in elections, according to a news report by Newsmax.

Under federal law, it is illegal for non-citizens – including the lawful permanent residents (green card holders) to vote for the US President, the US Senate or the US House of Representatives. All states require US citizenship (by birth or naturalization) to both register and vote in federal and state elections.

To put things in perspective, posted below is the excerpt from the news report of Newsmax. Some parts in boldface…

The Department of Justice announced Monday that it filed criminal charges against 28 foreign nationals living in California for allegedly registering to vote illegally or casting ballots in U.S. elections.

The arrests escalate a fight over voter rolls between California and the Trump administration, which sued the state last week after identifying more than 20,000 registered voters it believes are noncitizens.

At least 11 of the 28 defendants were arrested Monday morning, First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli of the Central District of California said at a news conference.

He said authorities expected to take the remaining 17 into custody “in the near future.”

The DOJ said in a news release that all 28 defendants, charged as part of Operation Protect the Vote, were lawful permanent residents, or green card holders, who have legal immigration status but are not U.S. citizens and are prohibited from voting in federal elections.

The charges include making false statements in naturalization applications and fraudulent voter registration, felony offenses carrying maximum prison sentences of five years.

Six defendants charged with voting illegally in the Eastern District of California face misdemeanor charges punishable by up to one year in prison.

The defendants arrested Monday were expected to make their initial appearances that afternoon in U.S. district courts, but no pleas were expected to be entered, the DOJ said.

Acting Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter said the arrests demonstrated the need for California to address suspected noncitizens on its voter rolls.

He accused state officials of refusing to cooperate with federal efforts to verify voters’ citizenship and prevent illegal ballots from being counted.

“This Department of Justice will not look the other way while noncitizens vote in federal elections,” McCotter said at the news conference.

“Each of the 28 defendants charged today appears on the list of more than 20,000 likely noncitizen registrants we provided to California election officials last week,” McCotter said in the release.

“California refused to look at that list,” he said.

“Today’s charges show exactly what that refusal puts at risk.

“California must verify the citizenship of those more than 20,000 registrants before mail-in ballots are counted,” McCotter said.

Descriptions of the defendants released by the DOJ indicate that at least 22 allegedly cast ballots in U.S. elections. McCotter said at least eight voted illegally more than once, including some in the 2026 primary.

Welcome back, superhero enthusiasts, 1990s culture enthusiasts, X-Men fans and comic book collectors! Today we revisit the Marvel Comics shared universe through one of the many tales of the X-Men 2099 monthly series.  

Issue #21 had a wild story as it reflected the impact of Doom 2099 who took over as President of the United States. Not only did Doom appear (which easily reminded readers about the Fall of the Hammer storyline and the few X-Men members who got involved) in Las Vegas, Halloween Jack was on the verge of causing tremendous chaos on the city and many innocent people within. Quite notably, the series started its movement of gradually getting the futuristic X-Men together again.

With those details laid down, here is a look back at X-Men 2099 #22, published by Marvel Comics in 1995 with a story written by John Francis Moore and drawn by Ron Lim.

Early story

The story begins at the Sangre de Cristo mountains in New Mexico where a government helicopter arrives. Morphine Somers and an armored member of S.H.IE.L.D. appear to inspect the ruins. No lifeforms dead or alive were detected.

Meanwhile at a very dark location lighted by flames, former X-Men leader Xi’an meets with Brimstone Love and his trusted companions Charon and Felicity. The demonic leader of the Theater of Pain tells Xi’an that once he is initiated into the exquisite mysteries and dark truths of their group, he will emerge transformed. The Theater of Pain operates by providing twisted entertainment for an audience of the world’s rich and jaded, and by manipulating their deepest, most decadent fantasies which puts them under control.

Xi’an, who reverted back to his sinister self and abandoned the principles he held as leader of the X-Men, arrogantly tells Brimstone Love that he brought the Chosen and Master Zhao to him without being told what would happen to them. After being told that he must surrender his pride to become part of the Theater of Pain, Xi’an turns his back on the leader and begins to walk away expressing rejection. Brimstone Love suddenly tells him no one leaves the theater and teleports him…

Quality

If you have been craving for a powerful tale about Xi’an in the X-Men 2099 monthly series, this is the one to read. This comic book mostly follows Xi’an who at this stage had left the X-Men behind and started his participation with the Theater of Pain. As it turns out, his actual initiation to become a true member of the Theater of Pain really started in this tale and his new superior Brimstone Love is absolutely evil, exploitative and manipulative. Without spoiling the plot, I can say that Xi’an here was portrayed to be very vulnerable and truly disadvantaged as the initiation happens in three different scenarios which instantly reconnects with the painful stages of his past. That said, Xi’an perception of what had happened and how he related with personalities he encountered before truly gets tested. The same goes with his endurance as well as his handling of emotions and trauma. I can also say that the conclusion of Xi’an tale here is absolutely powerful and meaningful to see.

Imagine this as the future of woke California.

While Krystalin and Meanstreak are completely absent in this comic book, you will see Shakti, Skullfire and Luna who are still exerting efforts to figure out how to track down the Theater of Pain and save their former leader. Having served as the second-in-command to their leader when the X-Men was still intact, Shakti seeks a meeting with someone who was personally involved with Xi’an. At this stage in the series, Shakti and Skullfire are both focused on finding Xi’an believing that he can be recovered. This adds more to the tension leading towards the events of issue #25.

Conclusion

A comic book page featuring characters in a dramatic conversation about control, manipulation, and ambition, with fiery elements and colorful illustrations.
Symbolically, Xi’an looks like he is already in Hell in the presence of the demonic Brimstone Love of the Theater of Pain.

I really like X-Men 2099 #22 (1995). The struggle of Xi’an is the very meat of the comic book as the Moore-Lim duo set the stage for the reuniting of the X-Men and the major conflict that awaits them all in the 25th issue. Xi’an’s tale here is absolutely compelling to read and there will be moments when you will feel sympathy or confusion as his struggle with the initiation goes on. Symbolically, the mental and personality torture on the former X-Men leader strikes hard on the essence of the futuristic X-Men itself. You might end up speculating Xi’an might have been delusional on following the steps of Charles Xavier and Magneto to lead mutants in 2099’s America. This comic book could make you think deeply how far the futuristic X-Men could exist without their former leader. As such, this issue should inspire you to revisit the first three issues of the series.

Overall, X-Men 2099 #22 (1995) is recommended.

#1 Popcorn in Bed’s X-Men movie reaction videos – I enjoy watching the movie reaction videos posted by Popcorn in Bed. For the most part, Cassie and her sister Carly (who joined her many times in reaction videos) are pretty reactive to the movies they saw for the first time ever regardless of genre. Recently, I replayed watching their reaction videos of the live-action, X-Men movies (the main ones specifically) from 2000’s X-Men to 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse. Each X-Men reaction video of theirs is fun to watch and I noticed how Cassy and Carly discovered who the characters are, familiarized themselves with them, and still succeeded on following the stories even though there were so many characters in each film. That said, I encourage you all to watch their videos below.

#2 The Sherman Oaks Galleria today – You may not have visited the Sherman Oaks Galleria in California, but you might have seen it in films like Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Chopping Mall, Commando, and Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Indeed, the said shopping mall was used as a location in the movies and given the fact that a lot of shopping malls across America have closed down, revisiting the Sherman Oak Galleria’s legacy is both nostalgic and even educational. To find out what the Sherman Oaks Galleria looks like today, watch the video below. Tell me if you can recognize the malls spots that appeared in movies.

#3 Magic Johnson’s 1996 Comeback as a Lakers Player – Looking back at the career of Magic Johnson, the 1990s was a series of drastic changes about him. He quickly retired in 1991 because he had Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) but returned as a player in the 1992 NBA All-Star Game and represented the United States as a Dream Team members in the Barcelona Olympics. He retired again in 1992 as controversy and protests grew from players over his plan to rejoin the Los Angeles Lakers for the 1992-93 season. He came back to the NBA as Lakers head coach in 1994 winning 5 games and losing 11, and eventually stepped down. In 1996, he came back as a player for the Lakers taking a new role as a power forward. Magic Johnson’s presence on the basketball courts looked exciting on face value but there was a lot of tension behind the scenes and even division among the Lakers. #4 Eels to eat in Japan – I enjoy eating Unadon, the classic Japanese dish that has eel (unagi) grilled in the kabayaki way and served in a rice bowl. I had Unadon during my visits to Japan and in Japanese restaurants (both locally and overseas). Eels are truly popular in Japan. Even though supply constraints of live eels are felt by consumers and businesses, somehow the Japanese food joints found ways to secure enough of them and offer them to hungry customers in creative ways. #5 Retro World Expo 2026 – I always wanted to attend a retro gaming convention in America. I saw this video about Retro World Expo 2026 which took place in Connecticut and it was enjoyable to see. There is nothing like playing classic arcade games and classic console/computer games running on their original hardware. Watch the video below.

#6 You, Me and the Movies react to Resident Evil: Degeneration – If you are a fan of the Resident Evil games and movies, do you really enjoy watching the computer-generated Resident Evil movies? Back in 2008, the pure-CGI movie Resident Evil: Degeneration was released in cinemas and there was some excitement for it among RE enthusiasts as it had fan-favorite characters Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield. Not only that, RE fans who were disappointed with the Milla Jovovich-led live-action movies wanted to see RE movies that were more connected with the games they enjoyed. You, Me and the Movies recently posted their reaction video about Resident Evil: Degeneration and it is a must-watch.

#7 Ashleigh Burton reacts to The Transformers: The Movie – Finally, Ashleigh Burton saw the animated classic The Transformers: The Movie and posted her reaction video of it. It is nice that the animated movie got featured by her as this year marks its 40th anniversary. Go watch her video now! It’s fun to watch.

#7 Deathmate and the 1990s comics revisited – As a long-time comic book reader, I personally witnessed the presence and impact of the Deathmate crossover comic books in 1993. The Deathmate comics published by Valiant were released on time while those from Image Comics really arrived late. Local comic book collectors near me had no excitement for Deathmate even though famous artists like Rob Liefeld, Jim Lee and Whilce Portacio participated in it in various degrees. The video below is very comprehensive with its focus on not just Deathmate but also the comic book speculator boom, the 1990s comics trends, the intrigue behind the scenes and more. #1 Virtua Fighter anime revisited – Remember back in the 1990s when Sega struck gold with the groundbreaking success of the first Virtua Fighter game? Virtua Fighter was their first 3D polygonal fighting game and it easily attracted attention as well as tons of money from arcade gamers and later console gamers. Virtua Fighter also sparked strong sales for the Sega Saturn console in Japan. Along the way, Sega itself got involved in anime productions with their ownership of TMS Entertainment and by the year 1995, the Virtua Fighter anime TV series was launched. To be clear, the Virtua Fighter anime series was not a simple production as the creators behind it made something cohesive as well as the characters worth following. #2 A look at the legacy of Reggie Lewis – When the late Reggie Lewis first entered the NBA as a rookie, the Celtics were still the best in the Eastern Conference and their famous starting five of Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Robert Parish, Dennis Johnson and Danny Ainge were aging. During his second season, Lewis improved heavily as he replaced the injured Larry Bird, and he went on to become a very productive Celtic over the next several years. Tragedy struck in 1993 when Lewis died at age 27 and the details behind his heart condition and death are complicated to say the least. What most people did not know was that Lewis entered the NBA to lift his family (note: his mother was a drug addict) up from poverty. The legacy of Reggie Lewis is explained in detail in the video below and I encourage you all to watch it.

#3 The Creepiest Episodes of Unsolved Mysteries – Recently, YouTuber Minty Comedic Arts posted a video about the ten creepiest episodes of Unsolved Mysteries (hosted by the late Robert Stack). In that video, I saw most of the creepy episodes featured and there were a few ones that I saw for the first time. Indeed, almost all the episodes of Unsolved Mysteries can be viewed for free on YouTube and there are some that were missing due to legal reasons. Now is the time to watch Minty’s video below. Tell me if you find them creepy.

#4 American cheese in Japan – With the intensifying demand for cheese around the world, there is now a so-called battle for market share. In Japan, most cheese offered are imported and their prices have gone up significantly affecting the restaurants and local consumers. Along the way, cheese produced in the United States have entered Japan in growing numbers and it is being offered to local businesses and consumers for their consumption and cooking needs. America has key advantages with regards to production of milk and cheese and there is a renewed focus on exporting products aggressively. Watch and learn from the Nippon TV video below.

#5 The Unreleased Marvel 2099 Video Game of the 1990s – Thirty years ago, I read a video game magazine and got excited over the news about an official video game based on the Marvel 2099 comics franchise. I already read lots of issues of Spider-Man 2099, X-Men 2099, Ravage 2099, Punisher 2099, Doom 2099, and the 2099 Unlimited quarterly series. That said, I was delightfully surprised that the Marvel 2099 game was set for release on PlayStation. Then as time passed by, nothing happened and the unreleased game was forgotten. To find out exactly what happened, go watch the in-depth video below.

#6 Chopping Mall reaction videos – How many times have you seen a horror movie or a cinematic misadventure that happened inside a shopping mall? In 1986, the low-budget techno-horror movie Chopping Mall (original title: Killbots) was released and it had a lot of scenes filmed inside the Sherman Oaks Galleria (which was also a location for Commando and Fast Times at Ridgemont High) in California. What makes Chopping Mall unique is its concept of security robots going rogue and harming people which brings back vibes of The Terminator. In today’s age of rampant artificial intelligence (AI) development, Chopping Mall has gotten more socially relevant and it has been featured in many movie reaction and retro review videos on YouTube. I found for you guys and gals the more engaging videos of the said movie.

#7 Adults Who Went to the Extreme for Disney and Buried Themselves with Debt – What is the worst thing you can do with your time and money with regards to entertainment from the woke Disney company? A few years ago, a survey found that 24% of all Disney-goers accrued debt during their trips along with 45% of parents with children (aged below 18). To be very clear, visiting a Disney theme park with the family is very costly and the very expensive rates on the food, transportation, accommodations, souvenirs and services related with Disney won’t fade away. Even with those painful prices, there still are certain adults who put themselves at huge financial risks because they could not restrain themselves from enjoying anything Disney. The Disney adults are real, and they lack discipline on spending. In the long run, these people are morally and spiritually lost. You better not follow their bad examples, and you can find out why by watch the informative video below.

I like the way the direction of the series went with issue #16. The X-Men are in disarray and they are not even complete nor are they stable enough for any opposing force that could come their way. As Krystalin went to California for an uneasy reunion with her brother, Meanstreak has the past catching up to him. Firstly, he is not comfortable with Luna (Skullfire’s former tormentor and romantic partner) being part of their team. Secondly, a friend of his from Alchemax returned but in a radically different form.

With those details laid down, here is a look back at X-Men 2099 #17, published by Marvel Comics in 1995 with a story written by John Francis Moore and drawn by Ron Lim.

Early story

The story begins with Meanstreak and Halloween Jack (Jordan Boone who previously appeared as Loki during the Fall of the Hammer storyline) arriving in Las Vegas. Halloween Jack tells his pal that they benefit a lot from Las Vegas once they reshape it to their desires. For Meanstreak, trusting Jordan Boone (his friend since their days at the Alchemax academy) is very tough as he has changed so drastically into a dangerous psychopath as Halloween Jack. Jordan tells his fast friend that revenge is motivating him to take over Las Vegas.

Deep inside the Synge Casino & Hotel, Desdemona appears to her fallen brother Lytton who is paying the penalty of having murdered their late father Noah Synge. Even though he is in prison and has been isolated, Lytton remains addicted to shriek

Quality

A civil talk between Krystlin and her extremist brother Zak.

This comic book has two main plot threads – one is about Meanstreak and the obsessed Halloween Jack tackling the top of the Synge empire by confronting Desdemona personally, and the other follows Krystalin in California. Thematically, the two main plot threads are about dealing with the past and doing something with the future in mind.

In the case of Meanstreak (now separated many miles away from his teammates), his uneasy reunion with Jordan Boone puts him into a direct encounter with the head of the Synge empire which itself has a powerful grasp on Las Vegas. Meanstreak is witnessing Halloween Jack’s move to take over the city which effectively puts him in a very awkward position and none of the X-Men could help him.

As for Krystalin, she has the burden of dealing with her brother Zak who is obsessed with the ways of Wakanda and still lives with the obsession that everyone – including his sister – has to follow the Wakandan ways and agenda even if it means betraying the X-Men and their mother’s legacy. In fact, Zak here is pretty extreme and there are hints of racism and discrimination in his beliefs. This comic book also reveals the conflict of beliefs between Krystalin’s own parents which remains in effect between her and Zak.

Conclusion

Desdemona is the head of the Synge empire.

With its two plot threads, new sub-plots and character-driven focus, X-Men 2099 #17 (1995) moved this series to a direction that can be described as suspenseful, intriguing and also uncertain. That said, the current state of the X-Men looks even bleaker and more uncertain. Still, this comic book has set up something about Las Vegas and Krystalin’s personal struggle, and I am interested enough to discover more.

Overall, X-Men 2099 #17 (1995) is recommended.

#1 Heaven’s Gate Revisited – What is there to be said about the 1980 historical epic Heaven’s Gate apart from the facts that it failed spectacularly and brought down United Artists a lot? To its credit, it has a grand look that required a massive amount of money to be spent and the sheer depth of authenticity implemented under the direction of Michael Cimino (The Deer Hunter) is eye-catching. The film also had fine performances by Kris Kristofferson, Jeff Bridges, Christopher Walken and Isabelle Huppert. Historically, the massive failure of the movie impacted Hollywood as a whole and movie studios rarely grant the final cut privilege to movie directors. That said, there is a lot more to learn about Heaven’s Gate and I encourage you all to watch the video below.

#2 Moments That Destroyed Political Careers – Imagine yourself working so hard to get elected into public office in America followed by efforts to solidify the trust of voters who helped you win. With huge expectations, there obviously is pressure on you (the elected official) to serve them and fulfill your promises. Then one day, you committed a blunder or a very embarrassing moment that eventually leads you into a painful downfall. #4 Totally Whatever Reacts To Deep Impact – Back in 1998, I encountered some people who claimed to have cried while watching Deep Impact inside the movie theaters. When I saw it in the cinema, I saw a few other moviegoers near me having tears flowing from their eyes. Indeed, Deep Impact was made to move viewers emotionally with its themes of family, strained ties, and the struggle to remain intact before a massive tragedy happens. #5 Tuna In Japan – Whenever I visited Japan, I always made the effort to enjoy a meal with tuna on it. #6 Child’s Play 3 Reaction/Review Videos – Believe it or not, the 1991 movie Child’s Play 3 was released less than a year after Child’s Play 2. The movie followed the character Andy Barclay again, only this time he was portrayed as a troubled teenager who enters a military school. Unsurprisingly, the evil Chucky was revived and pursued Andy once more. Having seen Child’s Play and Child’s Play 3 on home video just months apart from each other, the viewing experience was unique given each film’s differences in terms of casts and settings. When Child’s Play 3 came to an end, there was this feeling among many moviegoers that the film series concluded solidly. #7 The Legend Of The Lone Ranger’s Failure Explained – As a young boy, I saw The Legend of the Lone Ranger on home video and enjoyed it. Back then, I was completely unaware about the controversy regarding past Lone Ranger actor Clayton Moore who was legally barred from appearing in public wearing the trademark black mask. That controversy alone hounded the movie and was arguably the single biggest factor behind its failure. I myself read several reprints of EC Comics – including Tales From The Crypt – and saw some episodes of the TV series. That said, both the TV series and the comic books delivered a very unique kind of entertainment that is sadly missing today. #9 The Unification Church Exposed – When former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was assassinated in 2022, the killer Tetsuya Yamagami committed the act not because of politics but because of the perceived connections the politician had with the controversial Unification Church which he blames for financial ruining his family and his own life. The killer’s own mother was a member of the Unification Church and because she donated so much money to it, her own family ended up lacking money for survival, education and other needs. The murder investigation eventually unraveled decades of allegations about financial exploitation, shattered families and the immense influence the said church had on its members from Japan to South Korea and the United States. #1 Street Fighter III: New Generation Revisited – Way back in 1994, I had a blast of fun playing Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) plus other Street Fighter II games in the arcades. Naturally, I had a personal anticipation for Street Fighter III. However, Capcom released Street Fighter Alpha (Street Fighter Zero) and follow-up games over the next few years. In the 1st quarter of 1997, I saw Street Fighter III: New Generation in the local arcade and quickly inserted tokens to play it. I was very impressed with its super-smooth animation and enjoyed it. Still, something about the game felt hollow and weird as well which is related to the fact that Ryu and Ken were the only established Street Fighter characters who returned. Indeed, there was something odd that happened behind the scenes at Capcom when Street Fighter III: New Generation was made. Watch and learn from the videos below.

#2 EOM Reacts’ Saving Private Ryan Video – Twenty-eight years ago, Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan was released in cinemas and eventually achieved both critical and commercial success. While its story was not true to life nor a solid record of World War II history, its presentation of the extreme violence of the era and American brotherhood captivated a lot of moviegoers. #5 You, Me And The Movies React To The Philadelphia Story – When was the last time you saw a romantic comedy film released in the 1940s? In addition, it marked significant changes in the respective lives of Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) and Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) when it comes to family matters and getting old as law enforcers. I can hardly believe it has been twenty-eight years since I first saw this movie in the local cinema and it was indeed a thrilling viewing experience. #7 The 2003 California Recall Election Revisited – Decades after former actor Ronald Reagan led the state of California as its governor, another actor got elected to the same position via a recall election…Arnold Schwarzenegger! Back in 2003, the incumbent governor Gray Davis was very unpopular and a lot of Californians got fed up with the many problems that affected them. When the move to recall Davis grew tremendously, several people filed their candidacies for Governor of California but it was Schwarzenegger who outmaneuvered them. Given the fact that he starred in three Terminator movies – all of which were filmed in California – he would later be called as “the Governator” after taking office. #8 The Remake Trend Of Video Games – Like Hollywood, the video game industry has an obsession with remaking video games. #1 Resident Evil: Apocalypse Reviews, Retrospective And Reaction Videos – After watching the 2002 live-action Resident Evil movie, I left the cinema feeling unsatisfied as it did not have much related to the popular video game series. That film succeeded enough to justify the production of the sequel Resident Evil: Apocalypse, and the first reveal of Sienna Guillory as Jill Valentine (based on her appearance in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis) caught my attention. The reveal of Raccoon City getting hit by the zombie apocalypse and the casting of Oded Fehr as Carlos Oliviera (another RE3 character) interested me. In September 2004, I saw Resident Evil: Apocalypse on opening day in the local cinema and I was entertained for the most part. The Milla Jovovich-led film was indeed flawed, but it was an enjoyable improvement over its 2002 predecessor. How Resident Evil: Apocalypse fares with the YouTubers is something you must see.

#2 The Planned California City That Failed – Have you ever heard of Salton City? It was a planned city in the state of California located along the Salton Sea. It was designed as a resort community capable of supporting forty thousand residents, and it was to have the complete systems of water, roads, sewer and energy. Salton City is a ghost town and the in-depth YouTube video I found will help you realize its history and why development failed.

#3 Star Wars: Shadows Of The Empire Game Revisited – Back in the mid-1990s, George Lucas’ entertainment group launched the Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire multi-media project which told what happened between the movies The Empire Strike Back and Return of the Jedi. The said project was huge even though there was no live action Star Wars movie involved. A Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire novel was released which became the foundation of a comic book adaptation (read my retro reviews here and here), a video game, toys, action figures and merchandise. The video game of Shadows of the Empire was a joint project between LucasArts and Nintendo and its release on Nintendo 64 drew a lot of attention back then. The game itself made gamers – both Star Wars fans and casual gamers – want to get an N64 to play the game. I recently found two in-depth retrospective videos about Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire on N64 and I encourage you all to watch them.

#4 The Embarrassing Woke NDP Of Canada – Have you ever heard about the New Democratic Party? Referred to as NDP for short, New Democratic Party is a very leftist and woke political party in Canada and it had a really bad result in the 2025 federal election. Recently, the NDP had its leadership election and what happened in late March saw a series of awkward and embarrassing moments during their big event. In the videos below, you will see why political correctness, identity politics and wokeness are bad to have, and they made the internal processes of the NDP hard to pull off. In fact, diversity and inclusion zealotry have caused divisions within the NDP’s convention. What happened was funny to watch and it was not a comedy at all.

#5 Elderly Japanese Women And Their Beloved Restaurants – In Japan, many Japanese people live really long lives. Among them are elderly people who are active and managed to make an impact on others. That said, there are two elderly Japanese women who excelled in cooking meals and managing restaurants, and what they offer will impress you. I urge you all to watch the Nippon TV feature below.

In a serious effort to ramp up agricultural exports to the Philippines, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) will lead a trade mission in the country from April 13 to 26, 2026 and the delegation will be composed of several American agribusinesses farmers and trade groups, according to a news article by Farms.com.

To put things in perspective, posted below is an excerpt from the news article from Farms.com. Some parts in boldface…

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will lead a trade mission to Manila, Philippines, from April 13 to 16, 2026. The goal is to expand export opportunities for American farmers, ranchers, and agribusinesses.

This mission follows a major trade agreement reached in July last year, which created new pathways for U.S. agricultural products in the Philippines market. The delegation will be led by Deputy Under Secretary Michelle Bekkering and will include 58 agribusinesses, trade groups, and representatives from state agriculture departments.

Participating states include Idaho, Kansas, Nebraska, and Wisconsin. Companies such as American Egg Board, American Peanut Council, California Milk Advisory Board, Potatoes USA, U.S. Dairy Export Council, U.S. Soybean Export Council, and U.S. Meat Export Federation are part of the mission. Other businesses like Foodlinx, BNutty Peanut Butter, Global Export Marketing Co., Wonderful Citrus, and USA Poultry and Egg Export Council will also attend.

The Philippines is an important market for U.S. agriculture. It ranks as the tenth-largest buyer of U.S. farm and food products, with average annual imports of $3.4 billion over the past five years. Its growing population of 118 million and rising middle class make it a strong market for future growth.

During the visit, USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service will organize meetings, market briefings, and site visits. These activities will connect U.S. exporters directly with Filipino buyers and strengthen business relationships.

“USDA is committed to getting American farmers, ranchers and agribusinesses better access to strong markets and fair opportunities abroad,” said Deputy Undersecretary Bekkering. “Since the Philippines is one of the fastest-growing markets in Asia, this mission will connect U.S. exporters directly with reliable buyers, strengthen our trade relationship, and help keep American agriculture globally competitive.”
