Recently in Las Piñas City, police officers arrested vloggers known for organizing public pranks and publishing videos, according to a Philippine Daily Inquirer news report. For reference, read my previous posts by clicking here and here.
To put things in perspective, posted below is the excerpt from the Inquirer news report. Some parts in boldface…
Three vloggers who went viral for staging a kidnapping prank were arrested by authorities last August 1, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP).
In a report on Monday, the PNP said Las Piñas City Police Station arrested vloggers Mark Heroshi San Rafael, Mark Lester San Rafael, and Eleazar Steven Fuentes after their video, which was uploaded last April 7 went viral and drew flak online.
The video was uploaded on the vloggers’ YouTube channel “Tukomi,” featuring one of its members buying food from several side street vendors and food stalls along Saging Street, Phase 2 in Barangay CAA, Las Piñas when suddenly a group of men onboard a vehicle seized him.
After the video went viral, PNP-Integrity Monitoring and Enforcement Group Staff Sergeant Ronnie Conmigo lodged the complaint against the trio, which led to the issuance of a warrant of arrest by Judge Lynnette May Deloria-Manarang of Metropolitan Trial Court (MTC) Branch 124.
For further insight, watch the mentioned April 7, 2023 Tukomi prank video below…
Let me end this piece by asking you readers: If you are a resident of Las Piñas City, what is your reaction to this development? Do you think public pranks that involved acts of crime are very disturbing? Did the arrested vloggers organize a public prank in your local community over the last twelve months?

Welcome back superhero enthusiasts, 1990s culture enthusiasts and comic book collectors! Today we go back to the year 1993 to take a close look at the second issue of the second Venom comic book mini-series Venom: Funeral Pyre.
In my previous review, the gang-driven violence intensifies as the Punisher makes his move armed with lots of resources (including a van loaded with weapons and computerized functions). Venom struggles to free himself from the temporary prison the Punisher placed him in. As the violence escalated, Gray Russell finds himself in much deeper trouble as the anticipated rescue does not happen.
With those details laid down, here is a look back at Venom: Funeral Pyre #3, published in 1993 by Marvel Comics with a story written by Carl Potts and drawn by the late Tom Lyle. This if the final issue of the mini-series.
The cover.
Early story
The story begins inside a building with high-tech equipment from HYDRA. Gray Russel is no longer himself but as the red-skinned, highly radiated figure Pyre. He fires a microwave blast at Venom which hurts him so much. In response to Venom’s claim that he came to rescue him, Pyre reacts with rage telling the murderous man with the symbiote that he arrived too late which resulted in the forced killing of people during the gang violence on the streets of Oakland.
Being filled with pure rage, Pyre intends to burn Venom alive. Thinking that Pyre is distracted, the Punisher leaps to get a gun on the floor which causes the radiated person to fire a microwave blast at him. The Punisher takes cover behind a machine but notices the microwaves sparking off the metal.
Venom then takes advantage of situation…
Quality
This page shows Venom at a disadvantageous state with Pyre whose microwave blasts are more than enough to kill him.
As the conclusion of the mini-series, this comic book went all-out portraying what turned out to be the final conflict involving the murderous Venom, the vigilante Punisher and the energy-filled Pyre. As a result, the narrative strongly focused on the final conflict (note: stretched out to last several pages) and never bothered to look back at the people and activities on the city street.
That being said, you will get to see more of the two established Marvel figures struggling hard against an unexpected force of opposition who was previously an undercover news reporter who infiltrated a certain gang and sent a message (delivered by a young boy) that caught Eddie Brock’s attention. At this point, it is clear that Venom’s effort to rescue Gray (who became Pyre after using a super soldier chamber left behind by HYDRA) ended in total failure and finds himself facing someone who could kill him and his alien costume together.
If there is anything notable about this issue, it is the portrayal of Venom being highly disadvantaged and even vulnerable. There are no armed men with sonic weapons and high-tech equipment to bring Venom down but Pyre whose microwave blasts are deadlier than flame and sonic. In connection to the situation, Venom is not his aggressive self but a struggling figure who strives to survive and somehow find solutions during the heat of danger.
The Punisher, meanwhile, also struggled to survive but would simply not run away even though his chances of escape are much better. Instead, he focuses on actually eliminating Pyre without hesitation and Venom’s attempt to rescue Gray meant absolutely nothing to him.
More on Pyre, he is not really interesting nor was he ever engaging as the one powerful force of opposition that Venom and the Punisher must face. His being consumed by unrestrained rage and wielding so much power did not really raise the tension of the story. Had he eliminated the two Marvel figures who got in his way, what would Pyre do afterwards? Devastate the entire city of Oakland because he lost his identity as Gray and could not get over his involvement of taking other people’s lives while in the middle of gang activities? Would he proceed to San Francisco’s underground community and eliminate the people only because he blames Venom (note: Eddie Brock got involved with the underground people of San Francisco as seen in the Lethal Protector mini-series) for his failure of rescuing him? Pyre is nothing more than a throwaway comic book force of opposition.
From a visual standpoint, Tom Lyle once again pushed his creativity hard and showed some dynamic shots of spectacle here and there. At this stage, he proved to be very capable of visualizing Venom and the Punisher.
Conclusion
The Punisher refuses to give up and gets Microchip to assist him.
While issue #2 was a notable improvement over the first issue, Venom: Funeral Pyre #3 (1993) does not have much to offer in terms of engagement and entertainment. This is because it was crafted as a strict Venom-Punisher-Pyre conflict that provided spectacle and intrigue but ultimately ended up hollow. To see Venom at a huge disadvantage is interesting but did not add much weight to the plot. The Punisher was his usual self and in some ways overshadowed Venom for a while. Too bad there was not much space left for Venom and Punisher to fight each other again.
As the final issue of this mini-series, the story concluded with a whimper. Ultimately the Funeral Pyre storyline ended up as a diversion within the Marvel Comics shared universe that happened to attract Punisher, Venom and the gangsters of Oakland.
Overall, Venom: Funeral Pyre #3 (1993) is satisfactory.
More patients around the country can avail of the bivalent vaccines for COVID-19 as a result of the Department of Health’s (DOH) revision of its guidelines, according to a Manila Times news report. This developed as less than 50% of the initial batch of bivalent vaccines have been used on patients limited to health care workers and senior citizens.
To put things in perspective, posted below is an excerpt from the Manila Times report. Some parts in boldface…
THE general population can now be administered with Covid-19 bivalent vaccine after the Department of Health (DoH) issued revised guidelines on the updated jab.
A bivalent vaccine protects against both the original virus that causes Covid-19 and the Omicron variants.
In a memorandum dated July 10 but was released to the public only this week, the DoH said those under the A3 group, meaning persons with comorbidities and compromised immunity, can now receive the Pfizer bivalent vaccine in hospitals and health facilities nationwide.
Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa added that the general public can also avail of bivalent vaccine, noting their decision stemmed from the slow consumption of the updated jab among the A1 (health care workers) and A2 (senior citizen) subgroups. He said only 38 percent of the 391,000 donated doses allotted for these groups were used.
“Because of that, we have decided to make it available to those who want to get vaccinated with the booster. We only decided on this last week as the uptake was slow,” Herbosa said in Filipino and English in a radio interview.
The government’s stock of donated bivalent vaccines are set to expire on July 31, with an extension date of August 30.
Herbosa said a person can only receive a bivalent vaccine four to six months after getting the second booster dose.
He added that the government is negotiating with the global Covax Facility for additional bivalent vaccine doses.
Pfizer, Herbosa said, has issued a certificate of product registration that would make the vaccine available in drugstores across the country, but the lack of local cold chain storage proves to be a hindrance.
Let me end this piece by asking you readers: What is your reaction to this recent development? Are there many people in your local community who have been wanting to get immunized with the bivalent vaccines?
Recently in Las Piñas City, a maid got arrested by the local police for allegedly stealing her superior’s cash and jewelry in the home, according to a Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI) news report.
To put things in perspective, posted below is the excerpt from the Inquirer news report. Some parts in boldface…
A house help was arrested in Las Piñas City after her boss discovered that she had stolen millions worth of cash, pieces of jewelry, and a watch, the police said on Thursday.
According to the Southern Police District (SPD), Las Piñas City Police Station personnel identified and apprehended suspect Rosanna Salvadora at her employer’s residence along Versailles Alabang Daang Hari, Almanza Dos last August 1.
Based on SPD’s report, the employer found that her safe went missing on the same day after coming home from work. The victim immediately turned to Salvadora and asked about the vault, who then pointed to the kitchen.
When the complainant found her safe, it was already forcefully opened and empty. Police said missing items include P1.5 million worth of cash, P1 million worth of watch, and P2.1 million worth of jewelry.
The employer immediately sought the assistance of the police, who immediately arrested the suspect.
Let me end this piece by asking you readers: If you are a resident of Las Piñas City, what is your reaction to this development? Do you think the suspect acted all alone over the theft of her superior’s cash and valuables?

The single ticketing system in the National Capital Region (NCR) will start being fully implemented this September as announced recently by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), according to a GMA Network news report. As of the same report, Muntinlupa, San Juan, Parañaque, Caloocan, Valenzuela and Quezon City are currently the only cities implementing the said ticketing system which itself was launched formally last May.
To put things in perspective, posted below is an excerpt from the GMA news article. Some parts in boldface…
The full rollout of the single ticketing system in the National Capital Region (NCR) will start by September, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairperson Romando Artessaid Wednesday.
“With the delivery nitong mga servers, handheld ticketing device, makakapag-roll out na tayo within this quarter, by September sa lahat ng local government units sa NCR,” he said at a press conference.
(With the delivery of these servers and handheld ticketing devices, we can do the rollout within this quarter by September in all local government units in the NCR.)
Artes said the few weeks delay in the delivery of some handheld ticketing devices did not affect the implementation of the program because its pilot operations are still undergoing some customization.
He made the statement after the turnover of 150 handheld ticketing device units to Valenzuela, San Juan, Caloocan, Parañaque, and Muntilupa. Each city received 30 units.
“Dagdagan pa po natin yan kung ilan yung kailangan ng LGU depende sa kanilang request (We will provide more depending on the need and request of the LGU),” Artes said.
The single ticketing system aims to establish a uniform policy on traffic violations and penalty system in Metro Manila.
It would cover Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, Valenzuela, Quezon City, Marikina, Pasig, Taguig, Makati, Manila, Mandaluyong, San Juan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, and Pateros.
The 20 traffic violations that will be imposed uniformly in the NCR are the following: Disregarding traffic signs, Illegal parking (attended and unattended), Number coding UVVRP, Truck ban, Light truck ban, Reckless Driving, Unregistered motor vehicle, Driving without license, Tricycle ban, Obstruction, Dress code for motorcycle, Overloading, Defective motorcycle accessories, Unauthorized modification, Arrogance/Discourteous conduct (driver), Loading and Unloading in Prohibited Zones, Illegal counterflow, Overspeeding.
According to the MMDA, the fines for these 20 violations range from P500 to P5,000.
The following special laws will also be implemented: Seat Belts Use Act of 1999, Child Safety in Motor Vehicles Act, Mandatory Use of Motorcycle Helmet Act, Children’s Safety on Motorcycle Act, Anti-Distracted Driving Act, Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act.
Let me end this piece by asking you readers: What is your reaction to this recent development? Do you think the full implementation of the single ticketing system all over the NCR will make an impact on metropolitan traffic?

Recently in the progressive City of Muntinlupa, over three thousand qualified patients availed of the bivalent vaccines for COVID-19 as of July 28, 2023, according to a Manila Bulletin news report.
To put things in perspective, posted below is the excerpt from the Manila Bulletin news report. Some parts in boldface…
The Muntinlupa City government has administered the bivalent Covid-19 vaccine to 3,026 people while its number of active cases totaled two.
Data from the city government showed that as of July 28, there were 2,139 people who received the Pfizer bivalent vaccine under the A1 category or healthcare workers and overseas Filipino workers who will be deployed within the next four months.
In addition, 866 senior citizens under the A2 category were administered the vaccine while 21 under A3 (adults with comorbidities and pregnant women) received it.
Eligible people can get the third booster dose at least four months after getting their second booster shot.
On the other hand, Muntinlupa’s active Covid-19 cases totaled two as of July 31, an increase of one case from the July 24 tally.
Let me end this piece by asking you readers: If you are a Muntinlupa City resident, what is your reaction to this development? If you are a qualified patient, do you intend to avail of the bivalent vaccine shot for COVID-19? Do you consider COVID-19 a serious problem locally?

Welcome back superhero enthusiasts, 1990s culture enthusiasts and comic book collectors! Today we go back to the year 1995 and explore a part of the Marvel 2099 comics universe through a tale of the Spider-Man 2099 franchise.
As some of you may already be aware, the protagonist Miguel O’Hara got his Spider-Man 2099 costume in Mexico during the Day of the Dead festival he attended. If you are wondering if there was any comic book published that showed the futuristic Spidey on location in Mexico for the mentioned festival, there definitely is such a tale printed.
With those details laid down, here is a look back at Spider-Man 2099 #32, published in 1995 by Marvel Comics with a story written by Peter David and drawn by Roger Robinson.
The cover.
Early story
The story begins during the middle of the night in Mexico City. At a graveyard, the night watchman catches a man digging up one of the graves and tells him that what was done was obscene. The grave digger then hits the watchman with his shovel.
Elsewhere a lady practicing sorcery sees the image of Spider-Man and she is told that he will be her ally on a mission.
At another location in Mexico, the Day of the Dead festival occurs attracting a huge crowd of attendees and bystanders. Several people wore costumes that not only reflected the dead but also of evil figures and idols.
Inside a hotel room, Miguel O’Hara watches the festival from the window and on bed near him is a naked Xina covered by a blanket. It turns out Miguel did not sleep with her but alone on the couch. As far as he is concerned, there is no romance between him and her. While Miguel focuses on the festival below, Xina nakedly stands up and enters the bathroom.
Just outside the hotel room window, Miguel sees his brother Gabriel on the very next hotel room window…
Quality
Something sinister inside.
To make things clear, this story marks Miguel’s return to Mexico and his first as Spider-Man. As typical with this 1990s monthly series, Peter David crafted a story that focused on its concept while literally planting seeds for future stories. What is notable about this tale is that Spider-Man will not only get involved in an unexpected mission with some destined to be with him, his personality gets tested again in his civilian identity as he unexpectedly encounters his brother Gabriel and the two most notable ladies – Xina and Dana – are present with them. The presence of the two ladies is significant given what happened in later issues of this monthly series (click here and here).
More on this particular story, the tone really turned dark which is deliberately done by the creators as the Day of the Dead is featured here. Apart from the dark atmosphere established by the festival, this story has elements of evil such as sorcery, the worship of evil entities, idolatry committed and rituals of the wicked performed. It should be noted that even in a predominantly Catholic nation like Mexico, there are still lots of sinners, wickedness and demonic elements present. Very clearly, the sci-fi tone of this monthly series was completely replaced with the supernatural of the evil type. Along the way, a Mexican character is introduced and he even got a good share of the spotlight.
Given the shift to the supernatural, the story was executed with the build-up of tension and the next issue in mind. Spider-Man 2099 fans will still have character moments of Miguel, Gabriel, Xina and Dana to enjoy. That being said, if you are anticipating to see superhero spectacle, there is not much to find here.
Conclusion
A tremendous coincidence to have the O’Hara brothers together in Mexico.
Spider-Man 2099 #32 (1995) can best be described as a build-up issue with the planned pay-offs set to happen afterwards. To the credit of the creators, having a different tone and a totally new location for Spider-Man to be in made this comic book standout somewhat compared to all the previous issues published in terms of aesthetics. The best way to enjoy this comic book is to set your expectations low, don’t anticipate superhero action and focus on the further development of the futuristic Spider-Man and the supporting characters involved.
Overall, Spider-Man 2099 #32 (1995) is satisfactory.
Recently in the progressive City of Muntinlupa, the City Government announced that it will be giving shoes, bags and supplies to local students enrolled in public schools via the Balik Eskwela Packages program, according to a Manila Bulletin news report.
To put things in perspective, posted below is the excerpt from the Manila Bulletin news report. Some parts in boldface…
The Muntinlupa City government will provide free Balik Eskwela Packages to all students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 in public schools.
Mayor Ruffy Biazon said each Balik Eskwela Package contains leather shoes, school bags and school supplies consisting of notebooks, pencils (for Kindergarten to Grades 1 to 3) and ball pens (for Grades 4 to 12).
In the past months, the Muntinlupa City government asked schools and teachers to submit the shoe sizes of their students.
The Balik Eskwela Packages will be distributed to the students at the start of classes this year.
Biazon said the packages are part of his Karunungan (Knowledge) component of his 7K Agenda which he announced during his State of the City Address last March.
He also thanked the City Council for passing the budget that included allotment for the Balik Eskwela Packages.
Let me end this piece by asking you readers: If you are a Muntinlupa City resident, what is your reaction to this development? Do you find the support from the City Government sufficient for the public school students?

Recently Las Piñas City Representative Camille Villar emphasized government-backed early detection programs and ways on helping women deal with breast cancer, according to a news article by the Philippine News Agency (PNA).
To put things in perspective, posted below is an excerpt from the PNA news article. Some parts in boldface…
Deputy Speaker and Las Piñas Rep. Camille Villar on Tuesday reiterated her call for the government to intensify its early detection programs, and promote easier access to preventive screening against breast cancer to save the lives of Filipino women.
“With the alarming growth of breast cancer cases in the Philippines, there is a need to strengthen dedicated programs against breast cancer, and to allocate adequate budgetary support for programs involving early detection in hospitals and at the local level,” Villar said in a statement.
Citing data from the World Health Organization, she noted that in 2020, there were 86,484 total cancer cases in the Philippines, of which 27,163 breast cancer cases.
She pointed out that in the same year, breast cancer claimed the lives of 9,926 Filipino women, making it the third most fatal type of cancer afflicting Filipinos, just behind lung and liver cancer.
The Philippines had the highest rate of breast cancer in Asia and the ninth highest in the world in 2019, with the disease often diagnosed already in advanced stages.
She said an estimated 70 percent of breast cancer cases also affect indigent women, making it more difficult for them to fight off the dreaded disease.
“There is a seeming absence of comprehensive screening programs especially in far-flung areas, thereby depriving women to seek immediate early screening or medical help,” Villar said.
In view of this, Villar has filed House Resolution No. 1023 urging the appropriate House Committees to look into the increasing number of breast cancer cases in the country with the intent of promoting early detection programs and increasing breast cancer awareness.
She also called on her colleagues to pass a separate measure seeking to establish a special assistance fund dedicated for cancer patients, particularly the indigents and underprivileged Filipinos who need all the support from the government.
In her House Bill No. 5686, or the Cancer Medicine and Treatment Fund for Filipinos, Villar seeks the institutionalization of a PHP10-billion fund to support needy Filipino families in the battle against cancer.
Let me end this piece by asking you readers: If you are a Las Piñas City resident, what is your reaction to this new development? Are you convinced that Representative Villar’s proposals for government-backed measures on dealing with breast cancer and early detection programs are justified? Are you convinced that breast cancer is a very serious issue in the country right now?
