US Embassy Official Says Philippines Can Lead Nuclear Energy Renaissance With Skilled Workforce

An official of the United States Embassy stated that the Philippines can play a huge role in the global nuclear energy renaissance if it could develop successfully a skilled and capable workforce, according to a Manila Bulletin news report.

The Philippines can play a leading role in the global nuclear energy renaissance if it succeeds in developing a skilled workforce capable of supporting a safe, secure, and modern nuclear sector, a United States (US) Embassy official said on Thursday, June 11.

During the Nuclear Workforce Educational Forum at the University of Makati, US Embassy Counselor for Public Diplomacy Jessica Simon said workforce development remains key to the country’s civil nuclear ambitions, with the United States helping build that talent pool through the Fulbright Program in the Philippines.

“Today’s forum reflects a shared aspiration: that the Philippines will not simply observe the global nuclear energy renaissance, it will help lead it,” she said.

“Central to building a safe, secure, and modern nuclear sector is a skilled workforce. Through the Fulbright Program in the Philippines, the United States is building this workforce together with you,” she went on.

Simon said the Philippines and the United States are marking 80 years of diplomatic relations this year, providing an opportunity to strengthen cooperation in areas that could shape the future of both countries, including civil nuclear development.

“This year, the Philippines and the United States celebrate 80 years of our diplomatic relationship. It’s a chance to look back and celebrate all we’ve accomplished together. It’s also a chance to look forward, to consider everything we can accomplish together over the next 80 years,” she said.

“If anything meets that goal, it’s the work the Philippine American Educational Foundation is doing in support of the Philippines’ civil-nuclear development,” she added.

The forum was organized by the Philippine-American Educational Foundation (PAEF), also known as Fulbright Philippines, under its Freedom 250 initiative, which commemorates the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States in 2026.

Per Simon, the initiative seeks to foster cross-sector dialogue on issues relevant to both countries by bringing together government agencies, academic institutions, and private-sector stakeholders.

She said the US Mission and PAEF have been working with agencies such as the Department of Energy, Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), as well as private energy companies, through programs such as the International Visitor Leadership Program, Fulbright Specialists, and Speaker Programs.

The development of a nuclear workforce, she said, requires contributions from all levels of expertise, from researchers and engineers to skilled technicians.

“At the heart of today’s forum is a simple but powerful insight: building a nuclear workforce requires a full-stack approach,” Simon said.

“Every layer matters, from PhD researchers to licensed engineers to skilled technicians. Neglect the technician layer, and you build a system that looks impressive on paper but cannot function in practice,” she added.

Simon urged participants to translate the discussions into concrete institutional action as the Philippines explores the development of its nuclear energy sector.

800 Square Meters Of Land Allotted By SBMA For Luzon Economic Corridor Initiatives

Subic Bay’s participation in the ambitious Luzon Economic Corridor (LEC) was felt anew as the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) announced it has allotted eight hundred square meters of land for the LEC initiatives and for the Bases Conversion and Development Authority’s (BCDA) utilization.

The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) has allotted 800-square meters of land to be utilized by the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) for the Luzon Economic Corridor (LEC) initiatives.

SBMA Chairman and Administrator Eduardo Jose L. Aliño and BCDA President/ CEO Joshua M. Bingcang formalized this pact in a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) at the SBMA administration building on June 3, 2026.

SBMA Senior Deputy Administrator for Support Services Atty. Ramon O. Agregado and BCDA Senior Vice President for Conversion and Development Group Engr. Mark P. Torres witnessed the signing of the MOA along with officials and employees from both agencies.

Aliño stated that the designated area will serve as a workspace for BCDA officials and employees involved in official duties throughout the construction of the Subic-Clark-Manila-Batangas (SCMB) Railway Project and the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) interchange expansion.

“We are delighted to have you join our community. This partnership is more than just us lending you a parcel of land. It is a commitment to building a vibrant, supportive, and sustainable home for your staff. We look forward to ensuring that their living experience here is not only comfortable but truly enriching,” Aliño said.

Meanwhile, Bingcang said that this prepositioning of BCDA officials and staff is part of the agency’s thrust to ensure that the BCDA’s assets in Bataan accelerate investments and development activities in the region.

He added that these combined developments are expected to boost investment inflows further and increase personnel movement and operational demands in and around the Subic-Bataan-Clark growth area.

The agreement signed by the two agencies stipulates the use of an approximately 800-square-meter vacant residential lot located between Lots 95 and 97 Corsair Street, West Kalayaan, Kalayaan Heights District, Subic Bay Freeport Zone.

The allocation was approved by the SBMA Board of Directors through Resolution No. 25-07-1360 dated July 10, 2025, subject to the terms and conditions of the MOA and applicable SBMA rules and regulations.

14-Year-Old Kid With Disability Dies In Parañaque City, Six Minors Arrested

Recently in the City of Parañaque, a 14-year-old boy died as a result of getting beaten by six minors over a transaction he had with them, according to a news report by The Daily Tribune. The six minors were arrested later in follow-up police operations.

A 14-year-old boy with disability died after he was allegedly mauled by six minors in Barangay BF Homes, Parañaque City.

Parañaque City police chief Police Colonel Nicolas Piñon said the victim had met the group—also minors—reportedly in connection with a transaction involving shorts he had purchased from them.

After the exchange, the victim climbed a footbridge where he was allegedly attacked and repeatedly beaten. The teenager managed to flee but was already vomiting blood when he was later assisted and rushed to a hospital.

He died from severe head injuries, according to investigators.

Six minors were later arrested in follow-up police operations. They were turned over to the local social welfare authorities, in line with protocols for children in conflict with the law, while complaints for murder are being readied against them. Authorities have withheld the identities of those involved due to their ages.

Police said it is coordinating with social welfare agencies as the case undergoes inquest proceedings and further investigation.

Meanwhile, the victim’s family has called for justice, describing the teenager as kind and with no known conflicts prior to the incident.

A Look Back at Gen13 #4 (1994)

Welcome back, superhero fans, 1990s arts and culture enthusiasts, Image Comics fans and comic book collectors! Today we go back to the mid-1990s to examine one of the many tales of Jim Lee’s original WildStorm universe through the original Gen13 mini-series.

In the previous issue, Dale Keown’s Pitt made a crossover appearance, and his presence was strongly felt. For International Operations (IO), John Lynch and the Black Razors, Pitt is a monster that could handle and transport safely. Their stop at the IO facility in the middle of desert disturbed Ivana and only added tension as Caitlin Fairchild daringly returned to rescue her friends (who endured torture and humiliation under Threshold). Things intensified when Fairchild encountered Pitt.

With those details laid down, here is a look back at Gen13 #4, published by Image Comics in 1994 with a story written by Jim Lee and Brandon Choi with artwork done by Jeffrey Scott Campbell. This is the fourth issue of the mini-series.

Early story

The story begins inside the facility in the middle of the desert. Fairchild and the freed Pitt find themselves cornered by John Lynch, Ivana and several armored personnel with their guns aimed at them.

Lynch wants the two secured and escorted to the holding cells. Ivana, who is already upset over the immense damage caused by Fairchild and Pitt moments earlier, wants the two killed instead. Lynch tells her to stop worrying as he will take both Fairchild and Pitt with him the next morning. Ivana responds negatively and orders the Black Razors to have Lynch arrested.

As the Black Razors did not immediately respond to her, Ivana grabs a machine gun and kills them in front of Lynch. Fairchild seized the moment to sweep Ivana and her two red-colored armed guards off their feet to cause them to lose their balance. As Fairchild and Pitt begin to make their next move, more armed guards under Ivana arrived.

Meanwhile on another part of the facility, Grunge, Roxy, Rainmaker and Burnout are on the loose and they have the blonde young boy Timmy with them…

Quality

Facing certain death, Roxy uses her power to overcome the two armed troopers of Ivana.

At this particular stage of the mini-series, the story here is creatively a handsome pay-off to what was built up in the previous issue. As Caitlin Fairchild got delayed in her pursuit to rescue her friends, those four young people saw their respective super abilities manifest which enabled them to overcome tough and violent odds. Grunge here got braver, Roxy learned more how to handle her power properly and the more. As such, the building blocks of Gen13 as a team have started to take shape while still leaving some room left for suspense and surprises. In short, there is more to come after this story and the creative team carefully paced the storytelling, the spectacle and the character development.

Dale Keown’s Pitt continued to have a presence here and he does have an exit that is worth the attention of readers. Anyone who is not fan of Pitt will be able to discover something new and interesting about the character. In some ways, this comic book – plus issue #3 – made me a bit interested to read the Pitt comic books that were published under the Image Comics banner.

Team 7 made a quick appearance here. This was a clever way to promote the Team 7 mini-series to WildStorm fans.

John Lynch, one of the more established characters of WildStorm who appeared in mostly supporting roles, got a bigger spotlight here as he uses his authority as an IO executive which impacted the direction of the story. To be clear, Lynch is not in line with the managers of the facility (which belongs to IO) and his conflict with Ivana led to violence in the facility. What happened also led to his encounter with the Gen13 teenagers. As Lynch realizes their potential, he takes action using IO’s resources to even the odds as Ivana’s troops begin to arrive.

Caitlin Fairchild, Pitt, John Lynch and Ivana early in the story.

Compared to the previous issue, Gen13 #4 (1994) has stronger writing with regards to storytelling and character development. The plot really got deeper here even as twists and turns happened. At this stage, the facility has turned into a battle zone which literally placed the Gen13 teenagers and Lynch into a corner. This 4th issue of the mini-series is very entertaining and gripping.

Overall, Gen13 #4 (1994) is highly recommended.

Man Wanted For Attempted Murder Arrested In Muntinlupa City

Recently in the city of Muntinlupa, a man who has been wanted for attempted murder was apprehended by local police officers at a footbridge in Alabang, according to a news report by The Daily Tribune.

A 25-year-old man listed as one of the city’s highest-ranking fugitives was arrested during a targeted warrant operation on Wednesday afternoon at the Alabang footbridge in Muntinlupa City.

The accused, identified only by the alias Andong, 25, is classified as the station’s top 3 most wanted person for the month of June 2026. He faces criminal charges for the crime of attempted murder under Article 248 of the Revised Penal Code.

The operation was carried out at approximately 4:49 p.m. at the Alabang footbridge in Barangay Alabang. The service of the warrant was executed by tactical operatives from the Cupang Police Sub-station of the Muntinlupa City Police Station.

The accused was apprehended by virtue of an outstanding warrant issued by Judge Lovella Fernandez Demetria-Valdez of the Muntinlupa City Regional Trial Court Branch 276, with a recommended bail amounting to P120,000.

America’s Ban On Importing Crab Meat From The Philippines Takes Effect

Due to the Philippines’ failure to comply with the US Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA), the United States’ ban on importing Philippine crab meat officially took effect, according to a business news report by the Philippine Star. This latest development is another embarrassment for the Philippines as it is the only Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member nation that failed the US comparability assessment. It should be noted that the Philippines took pride in hosting the ASEAN Summit this year.

As the US import ban on Philippine crab meat takes effect today, the blue swimming crab industry is bracing for massive economic losses – estimated at P6 billion to P7 billion annually – and job displacements, an industry stakeholder said.

Former E.B. Magalona mayor and crab meat exporter Alfonso Gamboa said the country’s failure to comply with the US Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) led to the loss of its largest export market.

About 90 percent of Philippine crab meat production is exported to the United States, Gamboa said.

The United States National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) announced on May 12 that imports of Philippine blue swimming crab products would be restricted due to inadequate documentation on mandatory marine mammal protection and bycatch monitoring programs.

Gamboa, president of Saravia Blue Crab Inc., a major blue crab processing company, said the Philippines is the only ASEAN country that failed the US comparability assessment, noting that Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Vietnam and even China were able to comply.

“We failed because of insufficient documentation and monitoring measures concerning marine mammal protection,” he said.

Gamboa said the industry had already been experiencing difficulties since September 2025 when Philippine exporters were initially denied access to the US market. An appeal filed in January 2026 was likewise unsuccessful.

“In other words, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) did not do its job,” he said.

Gamboa estimated that around 10,000 fishermen and an additional 4,000 to 5,000 crab meat pickers in Negros, Panay, Bicol, Samar, Leyte and parts of Mindanao could be affected by the loss of the US market.

Major production areas include the Visayan Sea, Guimaras Strait, San Miguel Bay, Masbate, Sorsogon, Camarines Norte and Camarines Sur.

The Philippines exports approximately 500,000 pounds of crab meat monthly to the US, with products sourced from processing facilities in Bacolod, Iloilo, Cebu, and other coastal communities.

Although alternative markets such as China, the European Union, Canada and Australia remain available, Gamboa said they are too small to absorb the volume previously purchased by US buyers.

“These markets cannot absorb the displaced workers or the volume we used to ship to the United States,” he said.

#1 Reaction Videos Of Scary Movie 3 – After enjoying the original Scary Movie of 2000, I saw its 2001 sequel and left the cinema disappointed. Two years later, I saw Scary Movie 3 and it was an indeed an improvement over Scary Movie 2. What is very notable about Scary Movie 3 is the fact that the Wayans Brothers were no longer involved and it was directed by David Zucker of ZAZ (Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker). Scary Movie 3 is popular with YouTubers and already there are several reaction videos about it posted online. For your enjoyment, I posted below the reaction videos I found entertaining.

#2 Ranting For Vengeance Debunks Zealots Who Believe Anime Is Leftist – If you were fortunate enough to watch multiple anime productions dating back to the 1960s, you would be aware about the collective mindset of the creators, what the anime trends were and what the messages came with what was shown through the decades. Still, there are some zealots on social media who have this foolish belief that all anime is woke and leftist in nature. That said, Ranting for Vengeance recently posted another video debunking those zealots and his explanations have strong details. Watch his video now.

#3 The Enduring Story Behind Super Mario Bros. 2 – Back in the mid-1980s, Super Mario Bros. became a massive commercial success for Nintendo and it went on to make an impact not only on gamers but also on pop culture. Shigeru Miyamoto and his team worked hard to make Super Mario Bros. 2 which was released on the Family Disk System in Japan. Strangely, the Super Mario Bros. 2 released on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in America was not the same game the Japanese gamers enjoyed. Confused? There is a lot of details in GTV Japan’s video below and they are all worth discovering. Go watch it and pay attention to the details closely.

#4 Wagyu For Breakfast In Japan – When was the last time you had Wagyu for a meal? Was there ever a time you experienced a luxurious breakfast while traveling overseas? #6 No Chances For A Remake Of Xenogears? – When it comes to Japanese role-playing games (JRPGs) that were released on the PlayStation console in 1998, the one game I want to play again is Square Enix’s Xenogears. I played it on the PlayStation but I never got to finish it. While Square Enix managed to remaster Chrono Cross and released it on different platforms in recent years, the company has been very quiet about any remake or remastering of Xenogears. Apart from the fact that many of the people who worked on Xenogears under Square’s umbrella have left the company, there are other possible factors as to why remaking Xenogears is complicated in ways that have yet to be revealed to the public. On its own, Dragonslayer was dark, gritty, violent and even gruesome to see. The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) announced that it recently received from the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) a patient transport vehicle which will boost the efficiency of medical service delivery in Subic Bay Freeport Zone.

Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) received a patient transport vehicle from the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) during a turnover ceremony held at its head office in Pasay City on May 26, 2026.

PAGCOR President and Chief Operations Officer (COO) Atty. Wilma T. Eisma turned over the patient transport vehicle to SBMA Public Health and Safety Department (PHSD) Medical Services Division OIC, Dr. Arlene Gravina-Cesa.

SBMA Chairman and Administrator Eduardo Jose L. Aliño expressed his gratitude to PAGCOR for the patient transport vehicle which will boost the efficiency of medical service delivery in Subic Bay Freeport.

“My heartfelt thanks to PAGCOR, especially to Chairman Alejandro H. Tengco, for providing the Freeport with a patient transport vehicle. This unit will certainly enhance the services of our Public Health and Safety Department (PHSD) during the scheduled, non-emergency transfer of clinically stable patients,” he said.

“Kay Mam Amy (Eisma), marami pong salamat at hindi pa rin kayo nakakalimot sa iyong dating tahanan, ang SBMA,” he added.

Meanwhile, according to Tengco, the donation is part of the agency’s broader efforts to make basic healthcare more accessible, ensuring that communities and sectors in need, are able to receive urgent medical attention through these new patient transport vehicles.

“More than simply meeting targets, it reflects a clear commitment: to support healthier, more resilient communities by investing in essential services people rely on when it matters most,” he said.

Welcome back Xbox fans, Resident Evil fans and fellow geeks!

This past weekend, Capcom unveiled Resident Evil Veronica which is a modern remake of Resident Evil – Code: Veronica. Already a lot of gamers and Resident Evil fans are talking about the remake which will be released on the Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X/S some time in 2027.

Given Capcom’s record of making ambitious remakes of past Resident Evil games, Resident Evil Veronica has long been rumored to have been in development. Among the RE fans, Resident Evil – Code Veronica was memorable and yet it had certain elements that made it divisive (example: the annoying voice acting for Steve Burnside). As such, many viewed Code Veronica as the one game that really has to be remade and Capcom has only one chance to make a better and more definitive Code Veronica.

Originally released on the Sega Dreamcast way back in 2000, Resident Evil – Code Veronica was not just a follow-up to the popular Resident Evil 2…it was also a technological marvel as it had fully polygonal environments, more detailed polygonal characters and more immersive cinematic cutscenes. It was truly a next-generation RE experience for many gamers and I myself wanted a Dreamcast just to play it. The game also had Claire Redfield and her brother Chris as the playable major characters and both of them are still fan-favorites.

Going back to the trailer above, it is clear Capcom is making Resident Evil Veronica a darker, grittier and more horrific tale than the original game. The shots of Rockfort Island look very creepy, even nightmarish. While Claire Redfield has been revealed, Chris Redfield, Alfred Ashford, Steve Burnside and Alexa Ashford have not. Still, fans already pointed out that the masked man who grabbed Claire is Hunk (often identified with Resident Evil 2). Zombies were shown in a glimpse but the other monsters from the original game have yet to be shown. 

Claire Redfield is back and she has gone to Europe to search for her brother Cris.

Capcom describes Resident Evil Veronica as follows:

Resident Evil Veronica is a remake of 2000’s Resident Evil Code: Veronica. This new title preserves the essence of the original game, while introducing modernized gameplay, a reimagined storyline, and vividly detailed graphics.

In 2027, madness and intrigue, love and hate all combine to create a chilling new entry in survival horror.

3 months have passed since the biological disaster in Raccoon City. Claire Redfield, having survived along with Leon S. Kennedy and Sherry Birkin, travels to France in search of her brother, Chris Redfield.

However, what awaits her is not a reunion with her brother, but the Umbrella special forces unit responsible for the incident. They capture Claire and transport her to a mysterious island.

Now Claire must make a desperate attempt to escape the remote Rockfort Island, which due to another biological disaster, has transformed into a living hellscape of survival horror.

Resident Evil Veronica is set for release on game consoles and PC in 2027. Capcom has yet to show actual gameplay.

Tourism’s Contribution To Philippines GDP The Lowest In 3 Years

Given the fact that the Philippines has been having trouble attracting foreign tourists and their money, it has been confirmed that the tourism industry’s contribution to the national economy in 2025 fell down to a 3-year low, according to a news report by BusinessWorld. For insight, the Philippines attracted 5.94 million foreign tourists in 2025 while Indonesia attracted 15.39 million, Vietnam attracted a record-high 21.2 million and Thailand attracted almost 33 million.

THE TOURISM industry’s contribution to the Philippine economy fell to its lowest level in three years in 2025, weighed down by weaker tourism spending by foreign visitors, according to data from the statistics agency.

Preliminary data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) showed tourism’s direct gross value added (TDGVA) accounted for 8.1% of the gross domestic product (GDP) in 2025, down from 8.7% of GDP in 2024.

This was tourism’s lowest contribution to the national output in at least three years or since 2022 when it contributed 6.3% to the country’s GDP.

The country’s TDGVA was estimated at P2.27 trillion last year, down by 1.4% from the revised P2.3 trillion in 2024.

The TDGVA measures the value generated from various tourism-related activities and is based on the results of the Philippine Tourism Satellite Accounts report, which the PSA compiles from the Department of Tourism.

Tourism Congress of the Philippines President James M. Montenegro said the drop reflected external pressures, structural constraints and a weaker recovery in international tourism relative to the rest of the Philippine economy.

“While domestic tourism remained resilient, inbound tourism weakened significantly in 2025, which pulled down overall tourism value creation,” Mr. Montenegro said in a Viber message.

He said a major factor was the slower-than-expected recovery of inbound tourism from key Asian markets such as China and India even after the Philippine government eased visa requirement for Chinese and Indian nationals.

Mr. Montenegro said another challenge is the Philippine tourism industry’s ability to remain competitive in attracting foreign tourists. He said the Philippines should prioritize making key destinations more accessible to major regional markets.

“Many neighboring countries accelerated aggressive tourism recovery programs, including visa-free access, expanded airline incentives, stronger destination marketing, and airport infrastructure improvements. The Philippines continued to face challenges in air connectivity, airport capacity, inter-island transport efficiency, and tourist friction points,” Mr. Montenegro said.

He said that while the Philippines’ tourism sector has one of the highest contributions to GDP in Southeast Asia, it continues to lag behind regional peers in attracting tourists.
