A Look Back at Venom: Lethal Protector #3 (1993)

Welcome back superhero enthusiasts, 1990s arts and culture enthusiasts, Marvel Comics fans and comic book collectors! Today we go back to the year 1993 and explore a part of Marvel Comics’ universe through the first-ever limited comic book series featuring one of Marvel’s most iconic villains – Venom.

In my previous retro review, Venom discovers a long lost section of San Francisco that fell deep underground. Even though it is cut off from the resources and fresh air of modern San Francisco, the lost city section is filled with homeless people and social outcasts. Even though he helped the city dwellers by defeating the two armed mechs (employed by a powerful organization who oppose the city dwellers and are in pursuit of something related to San Francisco’s park), Venom still gets rejected by the so-called council. This only led him to returning to the surface not knowing that he is being targeted by a certain group.

With those details laid down, here is a look back at Venom: Lethal Protector #3, published in 1993 by Marvel Comics with a story written by David Michelinie and drawn by Mark Bagley.

The cover.

Early story

The story begins with Venom suffering from a sonic blast while being restrained by one of the armed members of the group called The Jury. Their leader (who wears a suit and necktie) introduces himself as Orwell Taylor and he addressed Venom as Mr. Brock. It turns out Taylor spent lots of time and resources researching everything about Brock and the alien costume. More shockingly, The Jury’s leader reveals that he lost his son Hugh years ago due to Venom’s arranged killing of him as he escaped from his prison cell in the federal prison called The Vault. Hugh Taylor is the first man Venom killed when he escaped.

Venom responds by say that he and his symbiote did not want to hurt anyone. This provokes Orwell Taylor into anger and he orders The Jury to kill Venom. Due to the lengthy explanations of Orwell Taylor, Venom managed to recover and regain strength which he uses to free himself and throw one Jury member to another causing quick chaos.

After punching another Jury member, Venom then moves out of the alley and away from Taylor and his team…

Quality

Very clearly, The Jury is a very formidable force of opposition. Their battle with Venom here comes with a lot of spectacle.

In terms of storytelling, this one is another improvement over issue #2 (which itself is an improvement over issue #1) as the plot got more interesting and even intriguing. For one thing, I like the fact that David Michelinie recalled Venom’s murderous escape from prison told way back in Amazing Spider-Man #315 (1989) and came up with the establishment of a very angry powerful father who formed the dangerous cybernetic team called The Jury. In a rather symbolic way, this comic book shows how Venom’s past comes back to haunt him and creatively, the battles between Venom and The Jury here are packed with a lot of action and visual dynamism delivered by Mark Bagley. The irony is that The Jury itself is not the main antagonist of this limited series as they are clearly presented to be a recurring force of opposition within Spider-Man’s realm in Marvel Comics’ shared universe of the time.

Still on the plot, the sinister organization hounding the dwellers of the lost city was revealed to be the Treece group whose leader is pursuing something very valuable to feed his greed. Still, even though this is already the third issue, the Treece organization’s presence is very subtle and as the force of opposition towards Venom, they are outclassed by The Jury.

As in the previous issue, Spider-Man got a good share of the spotlight but this one is even more limiting which should delight Venom fanatics who complained about Marvel’s icon overshadowing their guy with the symbiote. Spider-Man serves mainly as a tool for exposition as the creative team showed images from the past of Eddie Brock with his father (whom Spider-Man approached for answers).

The problem here is that showing flashbacks from the past and explaining how Eddie Brock became bitter and sinister as a result of receiving almost no affection from his father ruins the mystery of Venom as a character. During the time of Todd McFarlane drawing Amazing Spider-Man comics and the early Venom tales, the mystery of Eddie Brock’s past added to the intrigue of Venom and his quick rise as the deadliest villain Spider-Man ever faced. I understand that this limited comic book series had Venom as the protagonist who was in high demand among readers of the time but for me the creative team went way too far emphasizing Eddie Brock’s past.

Nothing changes the fact that Eddie Brock aided by the alien costume is a murderer who happens to have previously been a prolific print media journalist whose career got ruined by Spider-Man which in turn led him to a downward spiral and eventually to bonding with the symbiote that once bonded with Peter Parker. The flashbacks were pointless and if there really was an attempt to humanize Eddie Brock and make him sympathetic to readers, the creative team clearly failed.

Conclusion

Spider-Man with Eddie Brock’s father in California.

Venom: Lethal Protector #3 (1993) is a mixed bag. Its plot is clearly more intriguing and more interesting to read while there was enough creative space to show The Jury as a powerful force of opposition which is the result of Venom’s murder of Hugh Taylor (read: Amazing Spider-Man #315) while making a prison escape. The spectacle of the battle between Venom and The Jury must be seen! However, the creative team’s move to dramatize Eddie Brock’s past using flashbacks back-fired in my opinion and ultimately they destroyed whatever mystery was left behind Venom. As a protagonist, Venom has no appeal whatsoever and his portrayal here only reminds me that he works best as an antagonist opposite Spider-Man. Venom as a hero for those he perceived to be innocent and helpless remains forced and unconvincing.

Overall, Venom: Lethal Protector #3 (1993) is satisfactory.

Landmark ordinance of Muntinlupa City signed into law by Mayor Biazon

Recently in the progressive city of Muntinlupa, Mayor Ruffy Biazon signed into a law a landmark ordinance that deals with poverty in varied ways, according to a Manila Bulletin news report.

To put things in perspective, posted below is the excerpt from the Manila Bulletin news report. Some parts in boldface…

Muntinlupa Mayor Ruffy Biazon signed a landmark ordinance on Jan. 5 that will address poverty by providing wide-ranging services to pregnant women and their children including nutrition, childcare and scholarship programs.

Ordinance No. 2022-035, or the Womb to Work Program Ordinance, was signed by Biazon after the Muntinlupa City Council passed it.

The Womb to Work Program is a program that aims to provide a solution to poverty in our city. The program is designed to take care of a pregnant woman until she gives birth. We will help from schooling until employment to become a productive Muntinlupeño. This is part of our 7K Agenda,” said Biazon after signing the ordinance.

The ordinance states that the Muntinlupa City government is aligned with the 3rd National Plan of Action for Children, which aims to have children with “better quality and improved way of life; that children are well nourished, have healthy lives and are active learners with good quality education; that children are safe and free from violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation; (and) that children are actively participating in decision-making processes affecting their lives according to their evolving capacities.”

In implementing the ordinance, the city government will have the following goals:

Reduction of maternal mortality, new born deaths and under five deaths reduction of morbidities by ensuring maternal and child health care, including new born care, with time tested and proven interventions and ensuring adequate essential supplies, drugs, access to health care and medical facilities;

End children’s hunger and achieve food security and improved nutrition by drawing on broader and multi-sector nutrition sensitive programs that address the underlying effects of malnutrition and nutrition specific programs that address the immediate causes of malnutrition focusing on the first 1,000 days of a child’s life through infant and young child feeding, complementary and supplementary feeding;

– Combatting water-borne and communicable diseases;

– Prevention and treatment of substance abuse;

– Reduction of childhood disabilities, deaths and injuries from accidents and road crashes;

– Universal access of adolescents to reproductive health care services;

Access to quality early child care and development with the expansion an accreditation of day care services and child development centers and mandatory kindergarten to make young children ready for school;

– Inclusive and quality basic education, alternative delivery modes, flexible learning options and alternative learning systems

The qualified pregnant or lactating women residing in Muntinlupa under the ordinance are those who are registered in the Womb to Work Program; live in informal settlements; with total household income below minimum wage; lack access to health and nutrition services; solo parents; with debilitating sickness; nutritionally at risk; belong to indigenous groups, farmers and fisherfolks; and other similar or analogous cases.

Let me end this piece by asking you readers: If you are a Muntinlupa City resident, what is your reaction to this development? Do you think the newly signed ordinance is indeed a landmark ordinance?

If you want tremendous gaming value and content at a small price per month, I encourage you to subscribe to Xbox Game Pass (XGP).

Watch out for the Xbox Series X – Forza Horizon 5 premium bundle online and at the local retailers.

A Look Back at Spider-Man 2099 #9 (1993)

Disclaimer: This is my original work with details sourced from reading the comic book and doing personal research. Anyone who wants to use this article, in part or in whole, needs to secure first my permission and agree to cite me as the source and author. Let it be known that any unauthorized use of this article will constrain the author to pursue the remedies under R.A. No. 8293, the Revised Penal Code, and/or all applicable legal actions under the laws of the Philippines.

Welcome back, superhero enthusiasts, 1990s culture enthusiasts, Marvel 2099 fans and comic book collectors! Today we revisit the Marvel 2099 franchise within Marvel Comics’ shared universe during the 1990s. Specifically speaking, we take a look back at one of the early tales of Spider-Man 2099.

In this retro comic book review, the futuristic Spider-Man finally made his way back uptown after spending time in the old city of New York down below where he saw people living in poverty, violent gangs and Vulture 2099.

With those details laid down, here is a look back at Spider-Man 2099 #9, published by Marvel Comics in 1993 with a story written by Peter David and drawn by Kelley Jones.

The cover.

Early story

The story begins at the Wellvale where Conchata O’Hara (mother of Miguel and Gabriel) suddenly suffers an attack from inside her body. The medics were called for emergency.

Elsewhere, Spider-Man jumps with excitement and relief after finally making it back from deep down the modern city. He almost gets hit by a hover car and decides to stop for a while at an isolated spot to calm down and reflect about what happened recently. He just defeated Vulture in battle below prior to climbing back up.

Suddenly, an armed Public Eye flyboy tries to apprehend him. After making getting near the flyboy and making himself look like he was about to submit himself, the flyboy communicates with his team. During that short moment, Spider-Man fires his organic web at the flyboy’s mouth which causes him to fire his weapon and miss. Spider-Man then knocks the flyboy out cold, leaving the communication line hanging…

Quality

The idolaters of Spider-Man 2099 spotted.

Considering everything that happened to Spider-Man in the previous few issues set deep underneath the modern city, this tale was crafted to develop the webslinger’s personality some more while showing for the first time ever the group of Spider-Man 2099 idolaters who are so obsessed, they go around wearing their idol’s costume and even take risks imitating his physical abilities (example: crawling on the wall). There is no good-versus-evil conflict here but more exploration of the modern society Miguel O’Hara has long been part of.

For one thing, at this point of the monthly series, Spider-Man 2099’s misadventures and acts in uptown New York not only caused disturbance with the modern society watched over by Alchemax, he also sparked a new group of people who perceive him to be their holy savior. This kinda reminds me of DC Comics’ very own Sons of Batman which is a youth group inspired by Batman, and to see the Marvel 2099 have its own version of the concept is a pretty neat move by the creators.

Speaking of characterization, the complexities of the relationships between Miguel O’Hara with his brother Gabriel, his mother Conchata, his romantic interest Dana and the relationships the others have with each other begin to really grow in this issue. The good news is that Peter David not only provided solid dialogue for each character but also clearly defined their respective personality traits and thoughts about others. To see Gabriel personally reacting to Kasey’s reaction towards Spider-Man’s body was amusing and even a bit hilarious.

On the artistic side, Kelley Jones work here as guest illustrator was nice to see and certain visual elements of his work on Batman comic books also made it here. The result is a nice change of style and a new approach of showing visual details. I should state that even though his art style is radically different from that of Rick Leonardi, Jones managed to make the established characters look recognizable to me.

Conclusion

Kelley Jones’ visuals on Spider-Man 2099 is nice to see.

Spider-Man 2099 #9 (1993) is clearly a more characterization-oriented story which is a nice change of pace and approach considering the chaotic story developments of the previous few issues. This comic book also shows that Spider-Man 2099 continues to encounter challenges in both local society and personally. The revelation of idolatry and idolaters connected to Spider-Man added a new layer of foolishness and evil to the local society (for insight, click here and here). At this stage of the monthly series, something new was clearly brewing for the futuristic webslinger and this showed that Peter David laid out his plans for the direction of the series’ narrative. Lastly, Kelley Jones’ work here really stands out.

Overall, Spider-Man 2099 #9 (1993) is recommended!

Ten earliest taxpayers recognized by Muntinlupa City Government

During the first day of the processing of the renewal of business permits in the City of Muntinlupa, the City Government formally recognized the first ten taxpayers who made it, according to a Manila Bulletin news report. The said taxpayers were also rewarded.

To put things in perspective, posted below is the excerpt from the Manila Bulletin news report. Some parts in boldface…

The Muntinlupa City government recognized the 10 taxpayers who were the earliest to pay their taxes during the first day of the renewal of business permits on Jan. 3.

Mayor Ruffy Biazon, together with City Administrator Allan Cachuela, city councilors and department heads, awarded the top 10 earliest taxpayers at the Muntinlupa Sports Center in Barangay Tunasan, where the renewal of business permits is being done until Jan. 20.

The top 10 earliest taxpayers on Jan. 3 are Elmer Jesalva (RJ Sari-Sari Store), Erchie Tamon (Erchie Appliance & Parts), Ma. Pinky Begona (MPLG Bagona Trading), Althea Ador (OOST & VOOST Inc.), Denise Dador (Block Devs Asia Inc.), Almer Cesar Piedad (ALFG Trucking Services), Joceln Jalac (Edson Dacana Apartment), Kimberl Lauveles (Beecube Inc.), Arnold Bantiligan (Bob Garon Vandelvort Consultancy) and Laudemer Waminal (Chaulamber Enerprises).

Jesalva has been the No. 1 earliest taxpayer in the last three years. The top 10 received certificates of recognition and baskets of groceries from the Muntinlupa City government.

Let me end this piece by asking you readers: If you are a Muntinlupa City resident, what is your reaction to this development. If you are running a business within Muntinlupa, have you ever tried becoming one of the ten earliest taxpayers whenever the business permit license renewal processing happens?

Philippines attracted 2.65 million international arrivals and over P200 billion in tourism revenues in 2022

With the year 2022 officially over, the Department of Tourism (DOT) officially confirmed that the Philippines attracted 2.65 million tourist arrivals (exceeding the target of 1.7 million) and over P200 billion in tourism revenues were generated for the year, according to a news article by the Philippine News Agency (PNA).

To put things in perspective, posted below is the excerpt from the PNA article. Some parts in boldface…

The holidays delivered further gains for the Philippine tourism industry as it breached its 1.7-million target with 2.65 million international arrivals as of the end of 2022.

The arrivals translated to PHP208.96 billion or USD3.68 billion in tourism revenues, a whopping 2,465.75-percent increase from 2021, according to a news release on Monday.

Based on the monitoring of the Department of Tourism (DOT) from the time the country reopened its borders to all travelers in February until Dec. 31, 2022 arrivals peaked in December as more Filipinos and tourists alike opted to spend the Christmas and New Year vacations in the Philippines.

Of the total 2.65 million international arrivals last year, 628,445 were returning Filipinos while the bulk of 2.02 million tourists were from top markets United States (505,089), South Korea (428,014), Australia (137,974), Canada (121,413), the United Kingdom (101,034), Japan (99,557), Singapore (53,448), India (51,542), Malaysia (46,805) and China (39,627).

The year just ended likewise generated an estimated 5.23 million tourism-related jobs, 11,989 DOT-accredited tourism enterprises as of Dec. 29, 2022 and 25,770 tourism stakeholders who were trained.

DOT Secretary Christina Frasco was elated over the achievements of the administration of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., just six months into office.

She said the tourism sector’s growth clearly showed the hard work of the entire industry in order to recover from the unprecedented crisis brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Moments of great difficulty are also moments of great opportunity. In the past, we have overcome a global pandemic and survived various calamities. The Philippine tourism industry has managed to exceed expectations and our tourism partners and frontliners continue to offer the best of Filipino grace and hospitality to the world,” Frasco said in a statement.

“We welcome 2023 with gratitude and excitement for Philippine tourism to bounce back stronger than ever. We shall welcome with warmth and that distinct Filipino smile visitors from all over the world as they visit our award-winning beaches, experience the richness of our culture, and enjoy our world-renowned Filipino brand of service excellence,” she added.

Frasco is hopeful that the DOT will surpass its targets anew in 2023.

Let me end this piece by asking you readers: What is your reaction to this recent development about the Philippines tourism? If you are managing a business, did your business benefit somehow from the arrival of foreign tourists and/or Filipinos who arrived from overseas? Do you think the DOT will be able to achieve its targets for 2023?

LTO suspends license of jeepney driver responsible for hitting a woman in Parañaque City

A few days ago, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) suspended for ninety days the license of the jeepney driver who was held responsible for hitting a woman who crossed the pedestrian lane in Parañaque City, according to a news article by the Philippine News Agency (PNA). It is recalled that the said driver as well as owner of the jeepney were summoned by the LTO.

To put things in perspective, posted below is the excerpt from the PNA news report. Some parts in boldface…

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) on Tuesday suspended the license of a jeepney driver who hit a woman crossing a pedestrian lane in Parañaque City in December.

In a statement, the LTO said driver Leonilo Aque has received a 90-day preventive suspension of his driver’s license.

“Kasunod ito ng pag-amin ng drayber ng jeep na si Leonilo Aque na nabundol nito ang babaeng tumatawid matapos na hindi agad makapagpreno (This is after Aque admitted to having struck a woman crossing the street after he failed to apply brakes on time),” the LTO said.

The incident recorded through a closed-circuit television showed a woman who was suddenly struck by a jeepney while crossing a pedestrian lane.

Aque and the owner of the jeepney were issued a show cause order on Dec. 22, 2022, and were summoned to appear before the LTO Intelligence and Investigation Division (IID) on Dec. 28.

They were summoned for violation of DOTC Joint Administrative Order 2014-01 or “failure to yield right of way for pedestrian crossing” and Republic Act 4136 on reckless driving and being an “improper person to operate a vehicle.”

“During the hearing, Mr. Aque affirmed that he is the assigned driver of the subject motor vehicle and admitted that he hit/bumped a pedestrian during the incident. Thus, his professional driver’s license is hereby preventively suspended,” the LTO said.

LTO chief Assistant Secretary Jose Arturo “Jay Art” Tugade warned motorists, especially drivers of public transport, that it is within their responsibility to keep the roads safe.

Let me end this piece by asking you readers: What do you think about this recent development? Do you consider Parañaque a hot spot for traffic incidents involving jeepneys? Do you think the 90-day suspension by the LTO is sufficient?

Police arrest drug suspects in Parañaque City on New Year’s Day

In Parañaque City, the local police started the New Year with the apprehension of two suspects as a result of a buy-bust operation, the Manila Bulletin reported. The arrests took place in Barangay San Antonio.

To put things in perspective, posted below is the excerpt from the Manila Bulletin news report. Some parts in boldface…

Two female drug suspects were arrested by members of the Parañaque police Station Drug Enforcement Unit (SDEU) during a buy-bust operation on New Years’ Day.

Col. Renato Ocampo, city police chief, identified the suspects as Lanie Kusain, 22; and Sophia Andatun, 23.

Ocampo said the suspects were arrested around 3:25 p.m. along Headline St., Fourth Estate, Barangay San Antonio, Parañaque City.

The city police chief said members of SDEU conducted the drug buy-bust operation after receiving numerous complaints on the alleged drug activity of the suspects.

Ocampo said SDEU members were able to confiscate from the suspects 55 grams of shabu worth P 374,000.00 placed inside a brown shoulder bag and the P1,000 buy-bust money.

He said the confiscated shabu was turned over to the Southern Police District Forensic Unit for chemical analysis.

Let me end this piece by asking you readers: What do you think about this recent development? How serious do you think the illegal drugs problem really is in Parañaque City right now?
