Philippines inflation down to 1.9% this past September, lowest since May 2020

The inflation rate of the Philippines fell down to 1.9% for the month of September 2024 which marks a 4-year-low, according to a Philippine News Agency (PNA) news article.

The country’s headline inflation further eased to 1.9 percent in September this year, the lowest recorded since the 1.6 percent in May 2020.

Headline inflation was at 3.3 percent in August and 6.1 percent in September last year.

In a briefing on Friday, National Statistician Dennis Mapa said the latest data brought the year-to-date inflation to 3.4 percent, which is well within the government’s 2 to 4 percent target.

Mapa said the downtrend in the overall inflation was due to the slower annual increase in food and non-alcoholic beverages at 1.4 percent from 3.9 percent in August.

Food inflation, in particular, eased to 1.4 percent in September from 4.2 percent the previous month.

Mapa said the deceleration in food inflation was due to the slower inflation rate of rice at 5.7 percent from 14.7 percent in August.

Other contributors to the lower food inflation include the faster decline in the inflation of vegetables, tubers, cooking bananas, and pulses.

Lower inflation rates were also reported for corn, flour, bread and other bakery products, meat and other parts of slaughtered land animals, and ready-made food and other food products.

In a separate statement, the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) assured the public that the government remains committed to stabilizing commodity prices.

“The continued slowdown in inflation is expected to boost consumer confidence, driving higher spending and consumption and fueling business expansion,” said NEDA Secretary Arsenio Balisacan.

“Additionally, easing food prices will relieve low-income households, enabling them to allocate more to other essential needs such as education and health. We will sustain the momentum as we assure the public that we will continue to pursue and carry out strategies to maintain stable prices of food and other commodities,” he added.

Balisacan said the Executive Order issued by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., which reduced the rice tariffs to 15 percent, helped bring down rice prices.

“While we expect lower tariffs to reduce rice prices, we should continuously support local production through increased agricultural funding to complement this short-term measure,” Balisacan said.

The NEDA chief assured the public that the government is ready to address other inflationary pressures affecting food, such as the continuing prevalence of African swine fever (ASF), through the delivery of vaccines.

Alice Guo and five others charged for falsification, obstruction of justice and more

Former Bamban mayor Alice Guo (AKA Guo Hua Ping) and five others have been formally charged by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) for falsification by a notary public, the use of falsified documents, perjury, and obstruction of justice, according to a Philippine News Agency (PNA) news article.

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Thursday filed additional criminal charges before the Department of Justice (DOJ) against former Bamban, Tarlac mayor Alice Guo and five others over the irregularities in her filing of a sworn counter-affidavit in another case.

Named respondents were Guo, lawyer Elmer Galicia, Dante Catapay, Cheryl Medina, Catherine Salazar, and Geraldine Pepito.

“The cases we filed against them are falsification by a notary public, use of falsified documents, perjury, and obstruction of justice,” NBI Director Jaime Santiago said in a press briefing.

The charges arose from a motion to re-open filed by Guo’s lawyers in a separate charge for qualified trafficking against her.

Legislators concluded that Guo could not have signed the motion before the notary as she had already fled the country by that time.

NBI Chief Fraud and Financial Crimes Division and Task Force Alice Guo head Palmer Mallari said the investigation involved original documents from before and after Guo slipped out of the country.

“We collected sample signatures on original documents before the Bamban municipality as prior sample specimen signatures. We also collected sample specimen signatures purportedly signed subsequent to the days of the counter affidavit. This is for purposes of submitting that to our document division,” Mallari said.

“After the examination of our QDD (NBI- Questioned Documents Division), it was proven that the sample signatures appearing on all those documents as compared to the supposed signature appearing on the CA were not written by one and the same person,” he said.

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla said they would most likely pursue the administrative complaint before the Supreme Court (SC) against Galicia, the notary public.

“Dapat lang (Absolutely), we should pursue (the complaint),” he said.

Santiago, a retired lower court judge also said the claims made during the legislative inquiries by Guo’s staff that they had prepared signed “last pages” meant to be attached to filings on behalf of the dismissed mayor “is unacceptable.”

“No, that’s irregular. The affidavit should be signed in the presence of the notary public,” he said.

World Bank says that Philippines inflation will likely slow down this year

The World Bank (WB) recently announced that it sees inflation in the Philippines likely to go down this year and fall within the target range set by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), according to a BusinessWorld news report.

PHILIPPINE INFLATION is likely to slow this year to fall within the central bank’s target range, but higher transport charges and domestic rice production pose upside risks, the World Bank said.

In its latest monthly update, the World Bank said that the entry of more rice imports under lower tariffs should help keep inflation within the government’s 2-4% target.

“Inflation resumed its downward trend in August and is on track to fall within target this year,” the Washington-based lender said.

The consumer price index (CPI) eased to 3.3% in August from 4.4% in July. Inflation averaged 3.6% in the first seven months.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) projects inflation to average 3.4% this year.

“The balance of risks to the outlook has shifted toward the downside given expected reductions in rice prices as more imports arrive under the reduced tariff regime,” the World Bank said.

An executive order cutting tariffs on rice to 15% from 35% took effect in July. This helped rice inflation ease to 14.7% in August from 20.9% in July.

However, the World Bank said higher transport and electricity charges, as well as possible global oil and food price shocks still provide upside risks to the inflation outlook.

“Domestic rice production and prices also remain vulnerable with the La Niña weather phenomenon expected to bring more rainfall and intense typhoons in the remaining months of the year,” World Bank said.

Meanwhile, the World Bank said recent external and domestic developments have given the BSP more space for policy easing.

“Peso appreciation, driven by a wider US interest rate differential, supports domestic disinflation. This gives more room for further normalization of domestic monetary policy,” it said.

For the newcomers reading this, Benjo Bernabe is the son of former Parañaque City Mayor Florencio “Jun” Bernabe. The young Bernabe served as City Councilor from 2010 to 2013, and he ran for Mayor in the 2013 local election but ended up short.

Benjo Bernabe filed his COC in the presence of Commission on Elections (COMELEC) – Parañaque officials at City Hall. With him were his father, Congressman Brian Yamsuan (note: a candidate for the District 2 Congressional Seat of Parañaque) and Barangay BF Homes captain Jeremy Marquez to name a few.

I Love Israel: Two more Israeli-made missile boats received by the Philippines

As some of you are already aware, I fully stand with Israel which is very connected with my uncompromising faith in the Lord. I keep on praying to Him for Israel to overwhelm its enemies, rescue the hostages and recover from the effects of the October 7, 2023 terrorist attacks committed by the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas which is sponsored by terrorist state Iran. I can assure all of you that nobody from the evil Islamo-Leftist mob, nobody from the pro-Palestine radicals and nobody from any evil society would stop me from supporting and loving Israel.

Now, on with the news…

Recently it was announced that two Israeli-produced Fast Attack Interdiction Crafts (FAICs) were received by the Philippines which raises the current number of Philippine Navy (PN) FAICs to eight, according to a Philippine News Agency (PNA) new article.

The Philippine Fleet (PF) on Monday announced that two more fast attack interdiction craft (FAIC), also known as the Acero-class patrol vessels, were delivered to the country.

In a message to reporters, PF spokesperson Lt. Giovanni Badidles said the two FAICs were delivered at the Pier 15 of the Manila South Harbor on Sept. 17.

“These two FAICs, to be designated with bow numbers PG-908 and PG-909, will be the seventh and the eighth fast boats under the Acero-class patrol vessels,” PF spokesperson Lt. Giovanni Badidles said in a message to reporters.

Once commissioned into service, the number of FAICs in the Philippine Navy (PN) will rise to eight, leaving only one to be delivered by contractor Israeli Shipyards Ltd.

“Similar with their predecessors, the newly delivered platforms are designed for high-speed operations, featuring advanced missile systems and sophisticated onboard technology, which enhances the PN’s capability to conduct rapid and effective maritime interdiction operations,” Badidles said.

He also said the arrival of these vessels underscores the continued modernization of the PN and represents a crucial step toward bolstering Manila’s Self-Reliant Defense Posture (SRDP) program.

On May 22 this year, the PN formally commissioned into service the fifth and sixth FAICs and named them BRP Herminigildo Yurong (PG-906) and BRP Laurence Narag (PG-907). These two FAICs are equipped with the Spike NLOS (non-line of sight) missile systems.

The PN received the two gunboats from Israel Shipyards Ltd. on Nov. 18, 2023.

The vessels were named after two Medal of Valor awardees, the late Marine Staff Sgt. Herminigildo Yurong and Marine Cpl. Laurence Narag, who perished in the line of duty during the Philippine government’s campaign against Moro rebels in Mindanao in 2000.

This latest development shows the continuing growth of Israel-Philippines ties through defense and military technology. The Philippine Navy needs the best technology they could get to help them in their operations as well as securing the nation.

To my fellow Filipinos reading this, I encourage you to accept the truth that Israel is the land God designated specifically for the Jewish people (read Genesis 35:10-12) and His command must be followed without hesitation. If you want to be blessed further by the Lord, do so by loving and blessing the Jewish people (Genesis 12:1-3). I did my part when I was in Israel. Also, let me remind you all that the ties between the Jews and Christians are truly biblical!

We live in a very divided world. Around the world, Leftist forces have been supporting evil forces like the current regime of Iran which is known for supplying and arming the Palestinian terrorists, Hezbollah and other terrorist groups around the Middle East. The Leftists and terrorists always go together and their anti-Semitism is clearly obvious. Overseas, Israel recently intensified its fight against the Iran-sponsored terrorist group Hezbollah. Israel made it clear that they are at war with Hezbollah, not the people of Lebanon.

With all that said, I encourage you all to pray to the Lord God in support of Israel and believe that He will guide the Israeli forces to another victory which means finishing off Hamas, crushing Hezbollah and forcing Iran and its terror proxies to fall down. Read Joshua 11:1-20 in the Holy Bible for relevance and truth. Pray to the Lord to support Israel, its government officials, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the citizens and other stakeholders.

If you truly believe in Lord Jesus, the Holy Spirit and God the Heavenly Father wholeheartedly and you continue to be faithful, you should be aware that Christians are meant to stand united with Israel and love the Jewish people no matter what. You can do your part supporting Israel by donating to Christians United for Israel (CUFI). Do not forget to read the Holy Bible, then pray in tongues to the Lord in the privacy of your room with the door shut.

Always be the fearless and aggressive church of Lord Jesus! Always stand in support of Israel and pray for the peace of Jerusalem.

Chinese fugitive arrested in Parañaque City

The Bureau of Immigration has arrested a Chinese national wanted for kidnapping.

In a statement on Thursday, the BI said 37-year-old suspect Hu Yang was arrested in an operation with Chinese authorities in Barangay Tambo, Parañaque on Monday.

Hu Yang, alias Lin Zihao, was allegedly part of a kidnapping syndicate that tortured and kidnapped their victims.

He was tagged as a fugitive after he was declared wanted by the Public Security Bureau of Jinjiang City in China for kidnapping. His passport has already been revoked.

“His arrest is a significant step in our ongoing efforts to apprehend foreign criminals hiding in the Philippines. We will continue to work with our counterparts abroad to ensure that those who break the law are held accountable,” said BI Officer-in-Charge Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado.

The Las Piñas city government donated 15 bicycles to the local police on Monday, September 23, as part of its efforts in ensuring peace and security in the city’s communities.

During its weekly flag raising ceremony, Las Piñas Vice Mayor April Aguilar turned over the bicycles to city police chief PCol. Samuel Tafalla.

Tafalla thanked the city government for its continued support to the local police, especially on its bicycle police patrols.

According to him, some of the benefits of expanding its bicycle patrols include enhanced mobility in crowded areas wherein bicycles allow officers to navigate congested urban areas, parks, and pedestrian zones more easily than patrol cars and other service vehicles.

Bicycle patrols also increase community engagement for the police because officers on bicycles are more approachable and visible to the public, promoting positive interactions with the community that enhances trust and communication between law enforcement and citizens.

Bicycles also provide officers with better crime detection as it enables them to observe minor details that might be missed from riding a vehicle.

A Chinese national involved in the Pasay road-rage shootout incident on September 21 was charged with illegal possession of firearm and concealing his true identity at the Parañaque City Prosecutor’s Office on Monday, September 23.

The suspect, identified as “Lin,” 34, was arrested by members of the Tambo Police Substation after receiving an alarm from the Pasay City Police that a suspect involved in a shooting incident fled towards the direction of Parañaque City onboard a white NWOW E-Bike that he stole.

Lin was arrested near a construction site on Macapagal Boulevard in Barangay Tambo.

During the investigation, the suspect was found using fictitious names to conceal his identity and previous crimes which include kidnapping and illegal possession of firearm.

Remolino and Burgos top National Age Group Aquathlon 2024 at Ayala Vermosa Sports Hub

Andrew Kim Remolino lived up to expectations and defended the men’s elite title in the National Age Group Aquathlon 2024 at Ayala Vermosa Sports Hub in Imus, Cavite on Sunday. The event is part of the preparations for the 2025 Southeast Asian Games (2025 SEA Games) which will be held in Thailand.

Remolino, a native of Talisay City in Cebu province, finished the 500-meter swim and 2.5-kilometer run event in 15 minutes and 12 seconds.

Joshua Alexander Ramos of Baguio Benguet Triathlon secured the silver medal in 15:27 while Matthew Justine Hermosa, another Cebuano, settled for the bronze medal in 15:39.

“I’m so happy because we have been preparing for this tournament for months. We had back-to-back races the past weeks. We’re glad that we were able to deliver a good performance here,” the 23-year-old Remolino, a silver medalist in aquathlon at the 2023 Cambodia Southeast Asian Games (SEAG), said.

In the women’s division, 22-year-old Erika Nicole Burgos of Tanauan City, Batangas registered a personal-best 17:28 to claim the gold medal in the tournament organized by the Triathlon Philippines. Raven Faith Alcoseba, also from Cebu, placed second in 17:52, while Katrina Salazar was third in 18:01.

“I didn’t expect today’s results and I just have to keep working for the next race,” Burgos, a senior sports science student from University of the Philippines, said.

She was part of the winning mixed team, also in the Cambodia SEAG, with Hermosa, Iñaki Emil Lorbes and Kira Ellis.

Meanwhile, Singaporean Cheng Yu Lim topped the men’s junior elite category in 15:19. Filipinos Dayshaun Ramos (15:52) and Juan Miguel Tayag (16:40) were second and third, respectively.

Dhana Victoria Seda-Lomboy clocked 19:26 to bag the gold medal in the women’s division. Candace Marie Socito (20:49) took the silver and Edellaine Mae Diggs (21:30) got the bronze.

In the men’s division of the Youth (13-15 yearS) category, Peter Sancho Del Rosario pocketed the gold medal in 13:45.

Diego Jose Dimayuga (14:05) captured the silver medal and Euan Arrow Ramos (14:17) grabbed the bronze medal.

The top three finishers in the women’s division were Thailand’s Pitchanart Sripipom (16:08), Filipino Christy Ann Perez (16:26) and Singaporean Nur Isabella Schiering (16:44).
