Two akyat-bahay suspects arrested in Las Piñas City

Recently in the City of Las Piñas, police officers responded to an emergency call and eventually apprehended two akyat-bahay suspects for trespassing and theft inside a subdivision in Barangay Pulanglupa Dos, according to a Manila Bulletin news report.

Two “akyat- bahay” members were arrested by members of the Las Piñas City CAA substation early morning of Saturday, August 31.

Las Piñas City police chief Col. Sandro Tafalla identified the suspects as alias “Jason,” 22, and alias “Oscar,” 34. They were arrested inside a subdivision in Barangay Pulanglupa Dos, Las Piñas City.

Tafalla said the victim, identified as alias “Russel,” was awakened by the loud barking of his dogs at around 1:30 a.m. and discovered the suspects inside his home and had stolen a cellular phone and a silver watch.

He said the suspects tried to flee but his neighbors had already called for police assistance which led to the arrest of the suspects.

The city police chief said recovered from alias Jayson was a .38 caliber loaded with ammunitions while an unknown caliber pistol and shoulder bag where the stolen items were placed were confiscated from alias Oscar.

Seven suspects arrested in Parañaque City for kidnapping three foreigners

Recently in the city of Parañaque, the local police apprehended seven people (three of them were Chinese nationals) for kidnapping three foreigners, according to a Philippine News Agency (PNA) news article.

Seven suspects, including three Chinese nationals, were arrested for allegedly abducting three foreigners in Parañaque City, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) said Tuesday.

In a report, NCRPO chief Maj. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. identified the suspects as Liu Yujie, 39; Weichun Xu, 35; and Donbo Lyu, 35; all Chinese nationals; and Jon Jon Osquiza, 45; Jerico Mamaril, 29; Brian Barado, 33; and Ruel Arenas, 42.

Nartatez said the incident happened around 4 a.m. Monday when the suspects barged into a house inside the Multinational Village in Barangay Moonwalk, which is being rented by three women — two Chinese nationals and a Vietnamese.

He said the suspects destroyed closed-circuit television cameras while they took the cellphone of the victims’ driver Kevin Christian Julu-an and a housemaid. The suspects took the victims and forced them into their getaway vehicle, a white Toyota Alphard minivan.

Julu-an immediately reported the incident to the local police, which launched an operation.

At about 4 p.m., the police tracked the suspects’ hideout on another street in the same village and arrested them.

Sharp donates equipment to Las Piñas City Government

Recently in the City of Las Piñas, , Sharp Philippines Corporation met with Mayor Imelda Aguilar and formally donated several pieces of laundry equipment to the City Government at City Hall, according to the official announcement via social media. The equipment will be deployed in various evacuation centers across the city.

Sharp Philippines Corporation officially turned over 11 units of laundry equipment to the Las Piñas City Government in a ceremonial event on Thursday, August 15 at the City Hall. The donation, which includes five washers, five dryers, and one twin tub washing machine, is intended to support the Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office in providing clean clothes for residents in evacuation shelters, particularly during times of disaster.

City Mayor Imelda Aguilar personally received the donations, acknowledging Sharp’s significant contribution to the city’s disaster preparedness efforts. The event marks Sharp’s milestone of producing 11 million washing machines, reinforcing their commitment to social responsibility and community welfare.

Philippines inflation slows down to 3.3%

Inflation in the Philippines went down to 3.3% this past August, according to a Philippine News Agency (PNA) news article.

Headline inflation slowed to 3.3 percent in August this year from 4.4 percent in July due to the decrease in food inflation, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said.

In a briefing Thursday, National Statistician Dennis Mapa said the headline inflation last month was also lower than the 5.3 percent recorded in August 2023.

The latest data brought the year-to-date headline inflation to 3.6 percent which is within the government’s 2 to 4 percent target.

Mapa said the downtrend in the overall inflation in August was primarily brought about by the slower annual increment of food and non-alcoholic beverages at 3.9 percent from 6.4 percent in July.

In particular, food inflation eased to 4.2 percent from 6.7 percent.

The reduction was due to the decline in rice inflation which went down to 14.7 percent from 20.9 percent in July. It was the lowest rice inflation recorded since the 13.2 percent recorded in October 2023.

Rice inflation is expected to go down to a single-digit level this month due to base effects, Mapa said.

Vegetables, tubers, plantains, cooking bananas, and pulses meanwhile, which recorded a year-on-year decline of 4.3 percent in August from 6.1 percent increase in July, also contributed to the slowdown in food inflation.

Lower inflation rates were likewise noted in flour, bread, and other bakery products, pasta products and other cereals, 2.4 percent from 2.6 percent; meat and other parts of slaughtered land animals, 4.0 percent from 4.8 percent; and ready-made food and other food products not elsewhere classified, 5.5 percent from 6.0 percent.

Core inflation meanwhile, which excludes selected food and energy items, slowed down to 2.6 percent in August 2024 from 2.9 percent in the previous month.

In a separate statement, the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) said the continued easing of inflation and stable prices would significantly benefit households and businesses and will promote increased consumer spending and stimulate economic activity.

“The sustained easing of inflation will support growth in household consumption, which elevated prices have long suppressed. Low-income households will benefit from the decline in food inflation, as food constitutes more than half (51.4 percent) of the consumption of the bottom 30 percent of households,” NEDA Secretary Arsenio Balisacan said.

“Moreover, as businesses have identified persistent inflationary pressure as a significant concern, the recent stability and moderation in inflation will encourage investments, especially as borrowing costs are declining. Most importantly, the appetite for business expansion will improve as consumer spending increases,” he added.

Balisacan noted however that while inflation continues to trend downward, primarily due to reduced import tariffs on rice, potential pressures could emerge from higher electricity rates and above-normal weather disturbances.

“The government is prepared to address these pressures to ensure stable inflation. Preparations to counter the effects of the La Niña phenomenon are underway, including improvements in early warning systems, the utilization of communication systems to issue warnings about dam openings, measures to address the potential accelerated speed of livestock diseases, and greater involvement of local government units in information dissemination, are in progress. Notably, the government has allocated PHP15 billion for national risk reduction in 2024,” Balisacan said.

Dismissed Bamban mayor Alice Guo back in the Philippines, now under custody

Alice Guo, the dismissed mayor of Bamban who got caught by Indonesian authorities, was brought back here in the Philippines during the early hours of Friday escorted by Philippine government officials and she has been placed under the custody of the local authorities, according to a GMA Network news report.

Dismissed Bamban, Tarlac Mayor Alice Guo is back in the Philippines after being deported from Indonesia where she was arrested.

Escorted by top police and local government officials, Guo arrived from Jakarta on a private plane which landed at a private hangar at the NAIA .

Bureau of Immigration (BI) Commissioner Norman Tansingco confirmed the successful return of Guo to the Philippines.

“Guo arrived at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) at approximately 1:30 AM on September 6 aboard a special government flight. Her return comes after a swift operation by Philippine immigration authorities in Jakarta, in coordination with their Indonesian counterparts,” according to the statement issued by bureau.

The BI said it immediately executed the mission order against Guo, Tansingco said, faces charges of undesirability and misrepresentation under Philippine immigration laws.

Interior and Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos and Philippine National Police chief General Rommel Marbil on Thursday went to Indonesia for the turnover of custody of the former mayor from the Indonesian police.

In an earlier press briefing, PNP spokesperson Police Colonel Jean Fajardo said that Guo will undergo a medical check-up at Camp Crame upon arrival. She will be turned over to the Senate on Friday morning for the implementation of the upper chamber’s arrest warrant.

Guo was arrested by Indonesian authorities in Tangerang City, Indonesia at 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

The former mayor had cut her hair, which National Bureau of Investigation director Jaime Santiago believed was an attempt to conceal her identity.

Guo had asked Abalos for help over what she said were death threats against her.

In a video posted on Abalos’ Facebook of his meeting with Guo in Jakarta on Thursday afternoon, Guo was heard saying, “Sec, patulong. May death threat po kasi ako.”

Abalos entire reply was no longer heard but there was a portion in which he said, “Kaya nga kami kumuha ng private plane…”

For the newcomers reading this, Guo (AKA Guo Hua Ping) has been wanted in the Philippines and there are charges of tax evasion and money laundering against her.

A Look Back at The Last Starfighter #1 (1984)

Welcome back superhero enthusiasts, 1980s arts and culture enthusiasts, Marvel Comics fans and comic book collectors! Today we go back to the year 1984 to take a close look at the official comic book adaptation of the classic sci-fi movie The Last Starfighter.

The Last Starfighter is highly memorable for its extensive use of computer-generated imagery (CGI) which brought its science fiction concepts of war and space travel to life. Directed by Nick Castle, the film is also remembered for its unique storytelling (note: with scenes set on Earth and in space) as well as the solid performances by Lance Guest, Robert Preston, Dan O’Herlihy, Catherine Mary Stewart and Norman Snow.

I should also state that the movie was released during the golden age of arcade games in America and its narrative has video game elements within. The Last Starfighter, which had unreleased ports for Atari consoles and an actual game released on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), clearly has a place in retro gaming culture. Marvel Comics was in-charge of producing and publishing the comic book adaptation of the movie. In fact, it was released as issue #31 of the Marvel Comics Super Special (AKA Marvel Super Special) series and also in the form of a 3-issue mini-series.

With those details laid down, here is a look back at The Last Starfighter #1, published in 1984 by Marvel Comics with a story written by Bill Mantlo and drawn by Bret Levins. This is the first chapter of the 3-issue mini-series.

Early story

The story begins on a sunny day at a trailer park filled with residents who know each other. Maggie Gordon searches for Alex who is busy playing The Last Starfighter arcade game inside the local store. Alex’s little brother Louis was told to inform him that a neighbor’s electricity problem needs fixing.

Alex is laser focused on playing the arcade game which has an immersive space shooter game design. As Maggie tells him that their friends had arrived, Alex decides to let Louis play the rest of the game as he moves out.

Just as Alex and Maggie are about the leave, his mother tells him that he the neighbor’s electricity problem needs his repair service making him miss the trip.

In the evening, Alex resumes playing The Last Starfighter and shortly after scoring over 900,000 points, many members of the local community flocked inside the grocery to watch him play…

Quality

*There is nothing like being inside a very futuristic place and getting involved in a galactic conflict.*

Considering the limited scope of the narrative – which ends with Alex already far away from home – and the creative liberties committed by the production team, this comic book is faithful for the most part and it does a good job replicating the vibe and tone of the movie.

Bill Mantlo’s script focused on the more important dialogue from the film and it did a good job following Alex Rogan (the protagonist) who is a video game achiever who happens to be striving to move forward with his life. He is a likable guy facing great odds as well as the harshness of reality, and he has hope with Maggie who just might become an integral part of his life in the years to come. Centauri is clearly the 2^nd most notable character after Alex and through him, the narrative moves forward a lot leading to the greater science fiction stuff sourced from the movie.

As it is clearly not a 100% replica of the movie’s screenplay, the script Mantlo made ensured that this comic book has a whole lot of relevant details, notable moments and characterization that readers can immerse themselves into.

For his part, Bret Blevins (note: his name was spelled as Brett Blevins here) did a fine job replicating the movie imagery that includes the locations, the characters, and the sci-fi elements. While it is not clear if the comic book team was authorized to use the actors’ likenesses when drawing the characters, there were a few instances in which Alex somewhat resembles actor Lance Guest, and Centauri looking a bit like the late Robert Preston.

Conclusion

*Have you ever experienced attracting a lot of people while playing an arcade game?*

Even though there were no battles within its narrative, The Last Starfighter #1 (1984) is a good comic book adaptation. Having seen the movie a number of times in my life, I can say that this comic book recaptures the feel and tone of the film in varying degrees. Of course, the illustrated literature format can only go so far with adapting the movie’s greatness. That being said, if you truly want mesmerizing imagery, strong thrills, great music and the dramatics of the characters, watching the movie is the clear option (note: The Last Starfighter 4K Blu-ray is available). This comic book is a worthy partial companion and I can confirm that it has convinced me to read the next issue.

Overall, The Last Starfighter #1 (1984) is recommended.

Filinvest Hospitality Corp. makes big bet on Philippine tourism

Filinvest Hospitality Corp. (FHC) announced that it is betting big on Philippine tourism with its newest move to add a few thousand more new rooms over the next five years to accommodate tourists, according to a BusinessWorld news report.

GOTIANUN-LED Filinvest Hospitality Corp. (FHC) is aiming to add close to 2,000 new rooms in the next five years, a company official said.

“We’re looking at adding close to 2,000 keys. It’s more about the quality of the keys and the spread as opposed to the number,” FHC First Senior Vice-President Francis Nathaniel C. Gotianun told reporters on the sidelines of the Shareholders’ Association of the Philippines’ third general membership meeting in Makati City on Tuesday.

“We’re focusing on key tourist destinations across the country. We’re working on a collection of the top spots so when we go out into the international market or even the domestic market, we can sell all the good destinations, whether that be Boracay, Palawan, Bohol, Baguio, or Cebu. We’re trying to catch them all,” he added.

FHC’s hospitality portfolio has about 1,800 keys across seven hotels, ranging from high-end five-star properties under the Crimson brand to Quest hotels and Timberland, which serve the mid-priced leisure markets.

“We’re really focusing on creating a collection of hotels in the right locations so that when we go out into the market, we can sell all the best of the Philippines,” Mr. Gotianun said.

Mr. Gotianun said that FHC is very bullish on the prospects of the country’s tourism sector. He added that the company has a couple of projects to be announced by the end of the year.

“We can really see the tourism numbers starting to come back up, very strong domestic while international is still a little bit below, but we think we’ll catch up,” Mr. Gotianun said.

BIR confirms that more medicines have been exempted from VAT

In case you missed the news, the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) recently announced that several more medicines have been exempted from the value-added tax (VAT), according to a Philippine News Agency (PNA) news article. The newly exempted medicines cover those related to cancer, high cholesterol, hypertension, and mental illness.

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) said 15 more medicines for cancer, high cholesterol, hypertension, and mental illness are now exempted from value-added tax (VAT).

In a statement on Wednesday, the BIR said Commissioner Romeo Lumagui Jr. issued Revenue Memorandum Circular No. 93-2024 last Aug. 27, exempting from VAT certain medicines for cancer, high cholesterol, hypertension, and mental illness.

“The BIR is now a service-oriented agency, this includes the regular update of medicines that will fall under VAT-Exempt products. The BIR supports the government’s thrust in helping the public have access to more affordable healthcare and medicine,” Lumagui said.

The bureau said the circular was made in response to the updated list of VAT-Exempt Products from the Food and Drug Administration, under Republic Act (RA) 10963 and RA 11534.

19 people arrested in Cavite for voice phishing and scamming, credit card applications found

After more than three months of surveillance on a house in Imus, Cavite, elements of the Philippine National Police (PNP) conducted a raid and arrested nineteen individuals for scamming and voice phishing, according to a GMA Network news report. Several charges have been filed against the suspects.

A rapper and his girlfriend vlogger were among the 19 individuals arrested during a raid in a voice phishing lair in Imus, Cavite.

In Jun Veneracion’s report on “24 Oras” Thursday, authorities conducted a three-month surveillance on a house in Imus town before they conducted the operation. Several suspects attempted to escape resulting in a chase at the nearby farm.

According to the Philippine National Police-Anti-Cybercrime Group investigation, it’s been three months since the rapper was recruited into the scheme. The report said the rapper thought it was a legal business at first.

“Parang gusto na nila umalis kaso nasagawa na natin ang operasyon,” said PNP-ACG spokesperson Wallen Mae Arancillo.

(They were planning to get out of the group, but it’s too late as we have already conducted our operation.)

The PNP-ACG said that the couple could be having difficulty leaving the team because of the money.

“P5 million per week ang kinikita nila and I believe by percentage sila kung ilan ang tao na ma-scam nila (They earn P5 million a week and I believe are paid by percentage depending on the number of individuals they are able to scam).

Seized during the operation were credit card applications used by the suspect for the scam. There were also scripts found.

“Meron tayong nakausap na victim na imbes na panggamot sa anak nya sana ay na-scam, kaya namatay ito,” said Arancillo.

(One of the victims told us that his child died after he lost the money supposed to be used for the treatment through the scam.)

Typhoon Enteng victims of Muntinlupa receive assistance from City Government

Very recently in the progressive City of Muntinlupa, local residents who got displaced by Typhoon Enteng received assistance from the City Government, according to a Manila Bulletin news report. Mayor Ruffy Biazon and local officials visited the victims and distributed goods to them at the evacuation centers.

The Muntinlupa City government distributed relief goods on Sept. 3 to families that were affected by tropical storm Enteng and now temporarily sheltered in evacuation centers in the city.

Mayor Ruffy Biazon, together with city and barangay officials, went to different evacuation centers in barangays to distribute the goods.

On Sept. 2, Biazon went to Barangays Bayanan (which has the highest number of evacuees), Cupang and Poblacion.

The Victoria Homes and Villa Carolina 1 Subdivision in Barangay Tunasan were visited by Gender and Development Office focal point system Chairperson Trina Biazon together with Barangay Captain Dave Arcilla and former barangay captain Walter Arcilla and distributed hot meals.

Muntinlupa’s Social Services Department (SSD) also gave emergency kits that include hygiene supplies, basic kitchen utensils, gas stove, grocery items and rice.

The Muntinlupa City Health Office distributed doxycycline capsules to barangay health workers and evacuees as protection against leptospirosis.
