Meet Barangay BF Homes Kagawad-elect Mariel Tumang

A few days ago in Parañaque City, the local Commission on Elections (COMELEC) office proclaimed Mariel Angela Tumang as Kagawad-elect (winning candidate for a seat in the barangay council) after the results of the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) of Barangay BF Homes were finalized. Tumang, by the way, is the current Chairwoman of the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) of Barangay BF Homes.

To be very clear, Tumang and several of her campaign teammates were proclaimed election winners as follows: Jeremy S. Marquez as Barangay Captain, Cielo Lazatin as Kagawad, Sheryl Ortonio Gonzales as Kagawad, and Paolo Marquez as Kagawad. The BSKE in Barangay BF Homes is notable as this resulted in Jeremy Marquez’s return as chairman of the barangay while his brother Paolo (who served as the chairman since 2018) returned as Kagawad.

On the very day she was proclaimed as Barangay BF Homes Kagawad, Tumang posted on social media a touching message to her supporters, friends and family members which went as follows:

I was given a chance again to continue what I started serving as SK Chairwoman towards becoming Barangay Councilor of our Barangay.

I am very grateful to the Lord for giving me the opportunity to give myself and deliver wider service to our beloved Barangay. 🙏

Thank you very much to all the people who loved, supported and believed that I can make it and win this fight.

From the leaders, coordinators, to my dancers, staff, momshies, to the people who joined the movement, thank you very much.

Sa lahat ng taong tumulong morally and financially, maraming maraming salamat po. 🙏

To some you readers, Tumang’s name might sound familiar. That is because back in 2019, I interviewed Tumang and published a special feature of her when she was still new as the Chairwoman of the SK of Barangay BF Homes. She was elected to her previous post in 2018 and it was only this year when the BSKE happened.

Tumang and the members of the SK of Barangay BF Homes worked hard and responsibly for over the past five years and I covered several of their activities which you can read by clicking here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here and here. To say the least, Tumang is entering the barangay council with a lot of public service rendered over the past five years.

Imposition of withholding tax on online sellers could happen before December 2023

Those of you who have been engaging with online selling, you better brace yourselves as the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) hopes to begin imposing a creditable withholding tax before December 2023, according to a BusinessWorld news report. Specifically, this move applies on partner-merchants of online platforms.

THE BUREAU of Internal Revenue (BIR) is hoping to start imposing a creditable withholding tax on partner-merchants of online platforms before the start of December, an official said.

“The process could be shorter, and we might just come up with it before the start of December. It will not be unreasonable to expect it before the start of December,” BIR Assistant Commissioner Jethro M. Sabariaga told reporters on the sidelines of the SGV Tax Symposium last week.

“The longer you withhold this release, you’re hobbling a significant portion of today’s economic transactions,” he added.

The BIR last week released the final draft of the amendments to Revenue Regulation No. 2-98 which currently does not cover income payments by online platform providers.

Under the final draft, the BIR would impose a withholding tax of 1% on one half of the gross remittances by domestic e-marketplace operators to the online merchants for the goods or services sold through their facility.

However, the withholding tax will not apply if annual total gross remittances to an online merchant for the past taxable year has not exceeded P250,000, or if the cumulative gross remittances to an online merchant in a taxable year has not yet exceeded P250,000.

Also exempted are online merchants who are part of a cooperative duly registered with the BIR with a valid Certificate of Tax Exemption.

Mr. Sabariaga said the BIR took note of the suggestions and objections to the draft rules raised by affected sectors. The BIR’s deadline for comments from stakeholders on the final draft ended on Oct. 27.

“This will all be taken into consideration and then be studied and then the final draft will be released and exposed,” he said.

Since then, Mr. Sabariaga said the agency consulted with various industries to come up with the latest version of the draft.

“It’s the first exposition of the draft, you have to consider the various industries, the applicability of the withholding (tax) on the various industries, the rates, the economic provisions of it,” he added

The BIR has been seeking ways to tax the digital economy, particularly as e-commerce surged during the pandemic.

In 2022, the digital economy contributed P2.08 trillion, equivalent to 9.4% of gross domestic product. Of this, e-commerce had the highest growth at 26.5%, with its share to the economy reaching 20% or P416.12 billion.

COMELEC hopes for longer voting period in the next BSKE

The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) is hoping for a longer period for voting in the next Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE), according to a GMA Network news report. The BSKE this year happened this past Monday with a voting period of 7AM to 3PM although a few cities had early voting hours of 5AM to 7AM for senior citizens, pregnant women and persons with disabilities (PWDs).

Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman George Garcia on Monday said that he is hoping that the next Barangay and Sangguninang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) will have longer voting hours.

This, as Garcia said he expects long queues in voting precincts today, which will only be open until 3 p.m.

“Sana nga po dumating ang pagkakataon na mabago ang ating batas na sa halip na alas tres lamang ang pagboto sa BSKE ay sana kahit gawing mga alas singko man lang ito para po makapagsilbi sa mas maraming botante,” Garcia told reporters in an ambush interview after he cast his vote at Banaba Cerca Integrated School in Cavite.

(We look forward to the time when we can amend the law to extend the voting hours for BSKE until 5 p.m. so we can accommodate more voters.)

Aside from longer voting hours, Garcia is also hoping for a new law that will allow the poll body to provide seamless voting for senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and heavily pregnant women.

“‘Yun ang kadahilanan kung bakit pinu-push ng Comelec ang Early Voting Law dahil… makaka-register kayo nang mas maaga. Pag naka-register nang mas maaga, alam namin kung saan kayo boboto o kung kayo ba ay boboto nang isang linggo bago ang eleksyon,” explained Garcia.

(That is the reason why Comelec is pushing for an Early Voting Law. This will enable vulnerable sectors to register early and if possible, vote a week earlier.)

The Comelec chief then apologized to the vulnerable sectors who experienced inconvenience due to the required signing of a waiver form.

“Pasensya na po kayo. ‘Yun po ‘yung mga isa sa mga tinitingnan natin sa pilot testing natin, [kung] ano ang mga adjustment na gagawin natin,” he said.

(We ask for your patience. This is one of the things that we want to assess during our pilot test to determine the things that need adjustments.)

“First time po natin itong ginawa…pero wag po kayo mag-alala. Sa susunod na gagawin natin nationwide ‘yan, mawawala ang ganyang klase ng mga papeles o dokumento,” he added.

(This is the first time that we did this. The next time we hold this nationwide, we will no longer require those documents.)

Vulnerable sectors in Muntinlupa City and Naga City, Camarines Sur were allowed to vote early on Monday as they were allowed to cast their votes at 5 a.m.

Muntinlupa City Government congratulates local resident Napolis for winning 2023 World Combat Games women’s jiu-jitsu gold medal

Recently, the City Government of Muntinlupa congratulated local resident Kaila Napolis for winning the 52Kg women’s jiu-jitsu gold medal in the 2023 World Combat Games that took place in Saudi Arabia.

The congratulatory message was done through the City Government’s official Facebook page on October 28 with a picture post. For the newcomers reading this, this is not the first time Napolis made big achievements in international sports events and has been congratulated by the City Government before (read my past blog posts by clicking here, here, here and here).

The Philippines claimed its first gold medal in the 2023 World Combat Games following the triumph of ju-jitsu fighter Kaila Jenna Napolis at the King Saud University Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila).

“It’s my first time to qualify in such an event. It feels surreal to be able to get a gold medal especially here in the World Combat Games,” the 25-year-old Napolis told the Philippine News Agency on Thursday.

She scored a 2-0 victory over Anael Pannetier of France in the final of the women’s -52kg Ne-Waza.

“She looks intimidating by her stance and she’s a bit bigger than me so I’m very nervous going into the match. I feel like throwing up but I had to focus and give it my all because it is finals already,” shared Napolis, who defeated Adriana Cruz of Colombia, 6-0, in the quarterfinal and Mongljin Ganbaatar of Mongolia via submission in the semifinal.

“When I stepped on the mat, my mind was cleared already. I just wanna execute my techniques first and have a very good control on her,” added the 2023 Cambodia SEA Games gold medalist and Hangzhou Asian Games silver medalist.

Napolis was grateful to national coach John Baylon for accompanying her in the tournament.

“It’s my first time to travel alone without a teammate so I’m super thankful to coach John for helping me with the training here, assisting me with the schedules, being my corner man and masseur,” said Napolis, a member of the Paranaque-based Checkmat Manila Club headed by coach Manny Jimenez.

“Kaila deserved the gold medal, she trained hard and came here prepared,” said Baylon, a nine-time judo gold medalist in the SEA Games. He also competed in the 1988 (Seoul) and 1992 (Barcelona) Olympics.

Online seller arrested in Las Piñas City over illegal drugs worth almost P200,000

Recently in the city of Las Piñas, a successful buy-bust operation organized by the local police resulted in the arrest of an online seller who yielded almost P200,000 worth of illegal drugs, according to a Manila Bulletin news report.

A woman online seller yielded over P189,000 worth of “shabu” in a buy-bust operation conducted by members of the Las Piñas police Station Drug Enforcement Unit (SDEU) on Wednesday, Oct. 25.

The Southern Police District (SPD) said Col. Jaime Santos, Las Piñas police chief, reported the arrest of alias “Maria,” 23, an online seller of grocery items.

Santos said the suspect was arrested at around 1:50 a.m. along Upper Laong Almanza Uno, Las Piñas City.

He said members of the SDEU conducted the buy-bust operation by contacting the suspect  online and pretending to buy grocery items.

The city police chief said members of the SDEU were able to confiscate from the suspect about 27.8 grams of alleged shabu amounting to P189,040.

Aside from the recovered “shabu,” members of the SDEU also confiscated one Huawwei Nova 5T model cellphone, black coin purse and three P100 bills used as buy bust money from the suspect.

The confiscated shabu was brought at the SPD Forensic Unit for drug testing and analysis.

In anticipation of the incoming visits at cemeteries within Muntinlupa City, the City Government issued guidelines that notably prohibits liquor and overnight stays specifically, according to a Manila Bulletin news report. Also prohibited are gambling, flammable materials and dangerous weapons to name some.

The Muntinlupa City government banned drinking of alcohol and overnight stay at cemeteries for Undas 2023.

It issued guidelines for All Saints’ Day on Nov. 1 and All Souls’ Day on Nov. 2, including hotline numbers to call in case of emergencies.

“Let us all take this season to celebrate the legacy of our departed loved ones in a safe and meaningful manner,” said Mayor Ruffy Biazon.

In the city cemetery, the cleaning and restoration of gravestones and tombs will be allowed only until Saturday, Oct. 28. No burials or cremations will be allowed in between Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 except for special cases.

On Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, the city cemetery will be open from 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Activities such as gambling and the consumption of alcoholic beverages, along with firearms, sharp objects such as knives or box cutters, and flammable materials are strictly prohibited in all cemeteries, memorial parks, and columbaria in the city.

Selling of merchandise, the use of videoke or sound systems for entertainment, and overnight stay at the cemetery or memorial park are likewise banned. Parking will not be allowed near the premises of the city’s public cemetery.

Biazon encouraged Muntinlupeños to save the city’s emergency hotline numbers: 1) 137-175; 2) 8373-51-65; 3) 0921-542-7123; and 4) 0927-257-9322.

Recently in the City of Las Piñas, the City Government commemorated Global Handwashing Day with special activities at an elementary school in Barangay Talon Uno, according to the LGU’s social media post of October 23, 2023. Present during the event were Vice Mayor April Aguilar and Maynilad officials.

On Friday, October 20th, Las Piñas City commemorated Global Handwashing Day with a series of activities at the Talon Elementary School in Barangay Talon Uno. The event, which was conducted in partnership with Maynilad, aimed at instilling the importance of hand hygiene among the young minds. Graced by the presence of City Vice Mayor April Aguilar, the celebration demonstrated a united front against health adversities, emphasizing the simple act of handwashing as a frontline defense against illnesses.

At the event, Vice Mayor Aguilar highlighted the significance of regular handwashing, especially amidst the ongoing global health crisis. She commended the collaboration between the city and Maynilad in orchestrating such a crucial awareness campaign, showcasing the synergy between public and private sectors in promoting community health.

I Love Israel: Ambassador Fluss confirms that Filipinos are being taken care of in Israel as war with Hamas goes on

As some of you are already aware, I fully stand with Israel which is directly connected with my uncompromising faith in the Lord. The October 7, 2023 attack on Israel committed by the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas is the main cause of the state of war. No matter what the terrorists and their Leftist siblings do, nothing will stop me from supporting the Jewish state as its military campaign against Hamas continues. The Palestinian terrorists are guilty of infiltration, torture, kidnapping, murdering and damages of property in Israel.

Unsurprisingly, there were also people of different nationalities in Israel who got negatively affected by Hamas. There were already a few of my fellow Filipinos there who lost their lives and the Philippine embassy has been working hard to ensure the safety of other Filipinos present.

Here is a bit of good news – Israeli Ambassador to the Philippines Ilan Fluss confirmed that Filipinos present in Israel are being taken care of, according to a GMA Network news report (which referred to an ANC interview).

Amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas militants, Israeli Ambassador to the Philippines Ilan Fluss said Monday that Filipinos in Israel are being taken care of like family members of its citizens.

Fluss said that most of the 30,000 Filipinos in Israel “feel that they are safe” and that they wanted to stay in the Middle East country despite the fatal attacks by Hamas in Israel and vice versa.

“The Filipinos in Israel are part of us. They live with our own people… They are part of our families, they are staying in our homes. When we have to go into a sheltered room or into a bomb shelter or safety room, they come with us,” the ambassador said in an ANC interview.

“You are now joining the Israeli family which is a big family, unfortunately, of the victims of terror. And we are taking care of you as one of our big family in all different kinds of ways,” he added.

Four Filipinos were confirmed dead due to the conflict between Israel and Hamas. The latest casualty was an Ilongga caregiver who was one of the three Filipinos earlier reported missing.

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. said the Philippines stands with Israel following the deadly attacks by Hamas.

To my fellow Filipinos reading this, I encourage you to accept the truth that Israel is the land God designated specifically for the Jewish people (read Genesis 35:10-12) and His command must be without hestitation. If you want to be blessed further by the Lord, do so by loving and blessing the Jewish people (Genesis 12:1-3). I did my part when I was in Israel. Also, let me remind you all that the ties between the Jews and Christians are truly biblical!

In relation to the news report about the state of Filipinos in Israel, we here in the Philippines should thank and bless the Israelis in return for taking care of them as the war goes on.

We live in a very divided world. Around the world, Leftist forces have been supporting evil forces like the current regime of Iran which is known for supplying and arming the Palestinian terrorists and other terrorist groups around the Middle East. Leftist forces have been supporting the Palestinian Authority and other enemies of Israel. The Leftists and terrorists always go together and their anti-Semitism is clearly obvious. Hamas is purely evil and they are being protected by not only their fellow terrorists but also by mainstream news media outlets who are linked with Leftist forces and people who hate Israel and the Jewish people. At the same time, the Palestinian Authority and other pro-Palestine groups will do anything to mislead people and undermine Israel’s war campaigns against the terrorist group Hamas.

With all that said, it is a must we pray to the Lord God in support of Israel and believe that He will guide the Israeli forces to another victory which means finishing off Hamas. Read Joshua 11:1-20 in the Holy Bible for relevance and truth.

If you truly believe in Lord Jesus, the Holy Spirit and God the Heavenly Father wholeheartedly and you continue to be faithful, you should be aware that Christians are meant to stand united with Israel and love the Jewish people no matter what. You can do your part supporting Israel by donating to Christians United for Israel (CUFI). Do not forget to read the Holy Bible, then pray in tongues to the Lord in the privacy of your room with the door shut.

Always be the fearless and aggressive church of Lord Jesus! Always stand in support of Israel and pray for the peace of Jerusalem.

PNP and COMELEC formally sign data sharing agreement related to BSKE

With the anticipated Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) all set for October 30, 2023 (a declared non-working day), the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) recently signed a formal agreement on data sharing related to the said elections, according to a news article published by the Philippine News Agency (PNA).

The Philippine National Police (PNP) entered into a data sharing agreement (DSA) with the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to ensure the integrity and transparency of the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) on Oct. 30.

PNP chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr., director for operations Brig. Gen. Leo Francisco and Comelec officials led by Chairperson George Garcia, Commissioner Nelson Celis and Executive Director Teopisto Elnas Jr. graced the signing rites at Camp Crame, Quezon City on Monday, the PNP said in a news release Tuesday.

The pact grants Comelec access to the PNP’s Election Monitoring Systems and subsystems and outlines specific areas of collaboration aimed at bolstering the electoral process, pursuant to Republic Act 10173 or the Data Privacy Act.

Key components include access to the PNP Personnel Deployment, Surrendered Firearms, Voting Center Assistance, Election Status, Candidates, Party-lists, Voting Center, Treasurer’s Office, Unlawful Election Materials, Gun Ban Details, Violations thereof, and other critical data related to the elections.

The agreement also allows access to various subsystems within the PNP Election Monitoring System including geo-tagging for vote-buying, a separate subsystem for vote-buying, and another for Task Force Kontra Fake News, following the Comelec’s specifications.

“We will make a difference in ensuring that the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections of 2023 serve as a shining example of democracy in action,” Acorda said.

He also urged the public to trust the electoral process, assuring them that all measures are being taken to guarantee a smooth, secure, and credible BSKE 2023.

“Suffrage is more than just voting; it represents the heart of democracy. It gives individuals the power to shape their nation and participate in its governance. The BSKE is an integral part of our electoral system, providing a platform for citizens to exercise this valued right,” Acorda said.
