Trump Picks Kevin Warsh As The Next Federal Reserve Chairman

At long last, US President Donald Trump picked Kevin Warsh as the next chairman of the Federal Reserve replacing Jerome Powell, and already a lot of public officials and high-ranking members of the private sector support the choice, according to the Kyodo News report plus the White House press statement respectively.

U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday he will nominate Kevin Warsh to be the next chair of the Federal Reserve, with the choice of a Wall Street veteran who was a governor of the central bank over a decade ago seen as intended to avoid roiling financial markets.

Trump’s pick to replace Jerome Powell as the Fed chair caps a process that formally began last summer. While screening candidates in private, he has subjected Powell to relentless public criticism for not cutting interest rates more aggressively and challenged the independence of the world’s most influential central bank.

Trump announced the nomination in a post on social media, saying, “I have known Kevin for a long period of time, and have no doubt that he will go down as one of the GREAT Fed Chairmen, maybe the best.“

“On top of everything else, he is ‘central casting,’ and he will never let you down,” Trump added. The lengthy post, though it included information on Warsh’s professional experience, did not clearly explain the reason for his selection.

Powell’s term as Fed chief ends in May. The role requires Senate confirmation, which may not be smooth sailing for Warsh due to bipartisan concern over the Fed’s independence under Trump, most recently evidenced by the Department of Justice launching a criminal probe into Powell over a renovation of the central bank’s headquarters.

Trump told reporters later Friday in the Oval Office that he was not worried about the confirmation process, calling Warsh the “most qualified” person to take the helm of the Fed, based on his background and experience.

He also said he did not urge Warsh to cut interest rates, but admitted discussing the topic with him.

“I don’t want to ask him that question. I think it’s inappropriate, probably,” Trump said. “I want to keep it nice and pure. But he certainly wants to cut rates. I’ve been watching him for a long time.”

Warsh was previously appointed to the Fed in 2006 at the age of 35, making him the youngest person ever to serve on its board at that time. He was a board member until 2011.

During the 2008 financial crisis, he served as the Fed’s main liaison with Wall Street and earned a good reputation for stabilizing the situation.

Before that, he was a special assistant to President George W. Bush for economic policy and executive secretary of the White House National Economic Council.

After graduating from Harvard Law School in 1995, Warsh joined Morgan Stanley’s mergers and acquisitions division, where he worked for seven years and became vice president and executive director.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said last week that the screening of candidates for the next Fed chief had narrowed to four finalists.

The four were said to be Warsh, Kevin Hassett, Trump’s top economic adviser, Christopher Waller, a Fed governor, and Rick Rieder, BlackRock’s chief bond investment manager.

Calling Warsh and Hassett “the two Kevins,” Trump had repeatedly said they were “great” in the weeks leading up to his official announcement.

Warsh was a finalist in the 2017 Fed chair race during Trump’s first term and was reportedly a candidate for Treasury secretary in his second presidency.

During his time on the Fed’s board, Warsh was considered a monetary hawk, meaning he was typically supportive of higher interest rates to curb inflation, even in the middle of the financial crisis.

Compared with Hassett, a close ally of Trump’s who has openly advocated lower borrowing costs for businesses and consumers, Warsh is seen by financial markets as someone who could protect the Fed’s independence from the White House.

However, Warsh, 55, an outspoken critic of the central bank, has increasingly aligned with Trump’s views in recent months. The forthcoming Senate process is likely to test his ability to withstand pressure from the president while also reassuring nervous investors.

In a November opinion piece in The Wall Street Journal, Warsh disapproved of the Fed’s current monetary policy and praised the Trump administration for advancing what he called “pro-growth” economic programs, focusing on deregulation and tax reforms.

Meanwhile, the White House press statement revealed a long list of public officials and financial market figures who responded positively to Warsh’s nomination to lead the Federal Reserve. Posted below are selected excerpts from the statement. Some parts in boldface.

President Marcos Calls On HSBC To Help investors See Economic Opportunities In The Philippines

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has called on international bank HSBC to help more foreign investors see the huge economic opportunities the Philippines has to offer.

“Together let’s build a more progressive Philippine economy, where people can access reliable financial services, obtain meaningful opportunities, and live more dignified, comfortable lives,” he said in a speech at HSBC’s 150th year anniversary gala in Taguig City on Tuesday night.

“Let us continue creating an environment where investors, stakeholders, and most importantly, our citizens see the Philippines as a nation of promise,” he added.

He acknowledged the foreign bank’s support for government initiatives, including its participation in recent bond issuances such as the SEC-registered USD3.3 billion-equivalent dual currency global bond that aims to ensure the continuation of vital government programs.

“These programs, whether on infrastructure, education, or social protection, directly benefit our people, especially those who rely on stable public services,” he said.

He also cited HSBC’s strong collaboration with relevant economic agencies and its contribution to increasing the country’s exposure to foreign investors.

From its first branch in Binondo in 1875, Marcos said HSBC’s growing presence in the Philippines serves as a vote of confidence in the future of the Philippines.

On the part of the government, he said the administration continues to strengthen its financial systems to protect depositors.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, he added, is refining capital, liquidity, and governance standards to ensure that banks are resilient.

The country, he said, also adopts reforms such as the Basel III New Standardized Approach, the National Risk Assessment, and clearer guidelines for the disqualification of erring officers.

“Today, as HSBC adapts to a rapidly changing economy, we are confident that the bank will remain true to its commitment to making its services more inclusive, more secure, and accessible to Filipinos,” the chief executive said.

HSBC, the leading international bank in the country, serves 41 million clients across 57 markets, with over USD3 trillion in assets.

In his remarks, HSBC Interim Group Chairman Brendan Nelson said the firm has “strong” confidence in the Philippines and is ready to work with the country to sustain its growth momentum.

He said HSBC is “determined to continue growing” in the Philippines as he noted its strategic position in Southeast Asia, one of the regions, he noted, is set to benefit most from the “configured globalized world.”

Direct loading to GCash and Maya recently phased out by BPI

The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) is phasing out its direct e-wallet loading feature for GCash and Maya on Feb. 13, 2025.

After this date, BPI customers will no longer be able to use the “Load E-Wallet” option within the BPI mobile app to fund their GCash or Maya accounts.

Instead, BPI is advising users to transfer funds via InstaPay and PesoNet using the “Transfer to other banks” function. Within this feature, customers can select “G-Xchange” for GCash or “Maya Philippines Inc/Maya Wallet” for Maya.

BPI explained that this shift is in line with Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Circular 980, which outlines the National Retail Payment System Framework, and complies with recommendations from the Philippine Payments Management, Inc. (PPMI) as detailed in Advisory No. 2024-1104-020.

Citigroup sees Philippine economy expanding by about 6% this year

In the perspective of Citigroup, Inc. (Citi), the economy of the Philippines will grow this year by around 6%, pointing to the growth of the business process outsourcing (BPO), according to a BusinessWorld news report.

CITIGROUP, INC. (Citi) expects the Philippine economy to expand by around 6% this year, partly driven by sustained growth in the business process outsourcing (BPO) sector.

“We expect the growth in 2025 to stay within the 6% handle,” Citi Asia South Head Amol Gupte said in an online briefing on Monday.

Citi’s forecast would be at the low end of the government’s 6-8% target for the year.

“The Philippines will continue to benefit from [the BPO industry] and will create a lot of jobs. On moving up the value chain on global capability centers, countries like the Philippines will play a very large role along with India,” Mr. Gupte said.

The information technology and business process management (IT-BPM) industry ended 2024 with $38 billion in export revenue, and 1.82 million full-time employees.

Under the Philippine IT-BPM Industry Roadmap, the target is to grow into a $59-billion industry and increase the full-time employee count to 2.5 million by 2028.

“So, I think it’s really important that the Philippines, as it thinks about the BPO industry, moves up the value chain so that it retains and bring more middle-office kinds of jobs beyond the voice jobs that exist in the tens of thousands,” Mr. Gupte said.

However, the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) could be a risk to the IT-BPM sector in the Philippines.

“There’s also the risk to that in terms of what AI will do to that industry and whether that will reduce jobs,” Mr. Gupte said.

Meanwhile, Citi South Asia Corporate Banking Head K Balasubramanian said sustained economic growth ensures that Philippine banks are well-positioned to continue to generate profits.

“I think the financial profile of the Filipino banks continues to be very strong, and with 6% growth I think they are well capitalized to look at the opportunities ahead,” he said.

As of end-September 2023, the Philippine banking system’s net profit rose by 6.4% to P290 billion as both net interest and non-interest income grew.

“We just saw the upgraded Philippine sovereign rating that happened in the fourth quarter of last year. And if you look at the impact of that on the Republic of Philippines, as well as the state-owned banks of the Philippines, I think that’s going to be crucially positive because we are now up to BBB+,” Mr. Balasubramanian said.

“(This) means that the ability to access international financing is going to be better and even the cost of the access is going to be better than what it was in the past.”

Some parts of the movie were filmed on location here in my native Philippines. While I am not exactly a fan of the movie, I can say that it still has some shining moments as well as some memorable dramatic scenes. Recently, YouTuber Popcorn in Bed posted its reaction video of the movie, and I can say it is worth watching.

I myself own the Criterion Blu-ray discs of The Blob (1958) and Gojira, and I can say that the company did a great job restoring the said films while adding stuff for collectors and fans to enjoy. When it comes to restoring decades-old films and making them presentable with quality in mind, Criterion really works hard and you can learn a lot from them by watching the videos below.

It gave gamers an immersive experience of driving a tank with 3D graphics, fun gameplay and a first-person view. If you wish to learn about the history of Battlezone, who the creators were and how were they able to produce the game, watch the video of gaming history expert PatmanQC.

#7 Minty Comedic Arts and the 1980s – I really enjoy watching the videos of Minty Comedic Arts. His series of “10 things you didn’t know about…” videos on pop culture (mostly movies) is fun to watch and he often entertains with his delivery of trivia information. In recent times, he posted trivia videos about certain films from the 1980s – each one being memorable in their own ways – namely Fast Times at Ridgemont High, The Breakfast Club, The Blue Brothers, Beverly Hills Cop and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. US Dollar reserves of the Philippines reach all-time high of almost $112 billion

Based on the preliminary data of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), the American Dollar reserves of the Philippines reached $111.981 billion (as of September 2024 specifically) which counts as a new all-time high, according to a Manila Bulletin business news report.

The country’s US dollar stock climbed to its highest level of $111.981 billion as of end-September 2024, surpassing the previous record of $108.794 billion in 2021, as the central bank was accumulating foreign exchange and assets to boost external reserves and defend the local currency.

Based on preliminary data released by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) on Monday, Oct. 7, the gross international reserves (GIR) increased by 14.13 percent or by $13.865 billion year-on-year compared to $98.116 billion same time in 2023.

The GIR also rose by 3.82 percent or by $4.125 billion versus end-August this year’s reserves of $107.857 billion.

The BSP-monitored GIR are foreign assets of the BSP invested in foreign-issued securities, monetary gold, and foreign exchange.

The latest GIR level is “more than adequate external liquidity buffer” that is equivalent to 8.1 months’ worth of imports of goods and payments of services and primary income. It is also about 6.3 times the country’s short-term external debt based on original maturity and 4.4 times based on residual maturity, said the BSP.

Basically, a GIR is adequate if it can finance at least three-months’ worth of the country’s imports of goods and payments of services and primary income. This was based on international standards. The GIR is also viewed as more than sufficient if it provides at least 100 percent cover for the payment of the country’s foreign liabilities, public and private, falling due within the immediate 12-month period.

The reserves were higher in end-September because of the government’s net foreign currency deposits with the BSP that includes proceeds from the issuance of ROP Global Bonds.

The GIR likewise got a boost from the BSP’s gold holdings which had a higher value with the increase in the prices of gold in the global market. The BSP’s net income also increased due to its investments overseas.

PNP warns public about receiving phone calls from scammers pretending to be bank employees

Have you been receive phone calls from people who claim they are contacting you on behalf of a bank? Be extra careful because scammers have been acting as bank employees while calling up people in order to steal their money. Already the Philippine National Police (PNP) warned the public about such callers as they arrested several scammers in Cavite, according to a Philippine News Agency (PNA) news article.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) Anti-Cybercrime Group on Thursday cautioned anew the public, especially the elderly, from falling to fraudulent phone calls from those pretending to be bank employees.

The ACG issued the warning after nine suspects allegedly engaged in ‘vishing’ (voice phishing) scams and target bank depositors were nabbed in Cavite province on Wednesday night.

ACG chief Brig. Gen. Ronnie Cariaga said the arrest was made during the service of warrants to search, seize and examine computer data (WSSECD) against April Joy Espino,34, for violation of Section 4 (b) (2) or Computer-related Fraud under Republic Act No. 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.

“In telephone calls, these individuals pretended to be bank employees, deceitfully obtaining money from the victims’ bank accounts,” Cariaga said in a statement.

He said the arrest was carried out after an eight-month investigation, case build-up, and surveillance on the suspects which stemmed from complaints from dozens of victims.

Seized during the operation were registered SIM cards, information and communication technology (ICT) devices, bank documents, and scripts used when calling the victims.

Among the bank documents were assorted bank accounts and credit card account records containing various personal information.

Cariaga has called for the cooperation of financial institutions in the investigation to strengthen the evidence, prepare for filing the case, and expedite the process.

“The PNP ACG will also reach out to the victims identified in the gathered evidence to assist them in filing a complaint,” he said.

In a press briefing at Camp Crame, ACG Cyber Response Unit chief Col. Jay Guillermo said the suspects siphoned millions from the accounts of their victims.

“So roughly nasa PHP40 million na yang nakuha nila (They got roughly PHP40 million) from the time we investigate from November up to now,” Guillermo said.

HSBC Holdings Group officials, led by its Chairman Mark Tucker, paid a courtesy visit to the President at the Malacañan Palace and expressed its intention to continue expanding in the country.

“Today, we are left as one of the few international banks. But our commitment to the Philippines, and continuing to invest, continuing to work here remains absolutely intact,” Tucker told Marcos.

He added that HSBC, which has been operating in the Philippines for almost 150 years, is interested in expanding its investment in the Philippines, particularly on foreign direct investment (FDI), saying it “supports FDI by a number of different ways.”

For his part, the chief executive acknowledged the significant contributions of HSBC to the Philippine economy, pointing out the “interconnections” it has made in the country.

“Thank you again for HSBC’s continued interest. We continue to encourage (foreign investments). The economy, actually, we’ve tried to open it up, we put very, we put much (importance)… on the fact that private partnerships are necessary,” Marcos said.

Dutch bank predicts Philippine economy will grow 5.4% this year

ING, a bank and financial services firm based in the Netherlands, published its forecast that the economy of the Philippines will grow by 5.4% this year, according to a Manila Bulletin news report.

Dutch bank ING is projecting a moderate 5.4 percent growth for the Philippines this year, saying the impact of the central bank’s rate hikes could have propelled robust growth but it is handicapped by “soft” capital formation.

The 5.4 percent growth estimate is considerably lower than the government target of 6.5 percent to 7.5 percent this year. It is also lower than 2023’s full-year 5.6 percent growth, which was also below the government’s goal of six percent to seven percent.

ING senior economist Nicholas Mapa, in an ING Manila’s economic briefing on Monday, Feb. 19, said domestic growth seems strong this year but “below par as handicaps persist.”

He said one of these handicaps is the lack in capital formation as an impact of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ (BSP) cumulative rate hikes since May 2022, for a combined 450 basis points to bring the target reverse repurchase rate or the policy rate to 6.5 percent.

Because of this, Mapa said the “missing link” for a within-target growth is private investment and a National Government spending spree not hampered by a “soft” capital formation.

Capital formation is an integral part of GDP growth. However, capital formation and growth prospects were soft in 2023 due to rate hikes and it could persist this year.

For 2024, ING also forecasts inflation of three percent versus an actual six percent in 2023. The forecast is within the BSP’s target of two percent to four percent. It is also lower compared to the risk-adjusted forecast of the BSP of 3.9 percent for 2024.

Mapa also predict the exchange rate will end with a stronger peso this year at P54.90 since he also expects the BSP’s Monetary Board will cut the policy rate by 50 basis points (bps) from 6.5 percent to six percent, thereby boosting the peso performance.

Based on his presentation during the briefing, Mapa expects the first quarter GDP will perform better at six percent compared to the fourth quarter 2023 GDP of 5.6 percent. By the second quarter, he thinks the economy will grow by 6.3 percent but then will drop to 4.7 percent by the third quarter and further down to 4.5 percent in fourth quarter this year.

He said the rate hikes impact bank lending as well as GDP growth, and that the “elevated rates (has kept) capital formation subdued after years of underinvestment.”

BSP sees inflation landing below 4% this year

The way the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) sees it, the inflation rate of the Philippines will end up at less than 4% this year although there could be external developments that might alter things, according to a Manila Bulletin news report.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) expects the inflation rate to fall below four percent this year due to base effects, and is eyeing a lower January 2024 consumer price index (CPI) versus December’s actual 3.9 percent.

BSP Governor Eli M. Remolona Jr. said the base effects will push inflation rates lower for the months of January and February, and for the first quarter on average. They also expect CPI to climb back up after the first three months.

When asked if he sees a below four percent inflation by end-2024, the BSP chief said it is “very likely if you look on a month-on-month basis, it will moderate,” he said in a mix of Filipino and English. “So you have to adjust on base effects,” he added.

The central bank will revise the current 4.2 percent risk-adjusted inflation forecast for 2024 on Feb. 15 to below four percent, said Remolona. “(It’s) very likely,” he said, citing again, the base effects.

The Monetary Board’s first policy meeting this year is scheduled on Feb. 15. The hawkish BSP has kept a tight policy stance of 6.5 percent since October last year.

Meanwhile, the BSP will announce its month-ahead CPI forecast for January on Tuesday, Jan. 30.

According to Remolona, “I think it will be lower (from 3.9% December) because of base effects.”

BSP Deputy Governor Francisco G. Dakila Jr. said upside risks to inflation continue to evolve, and they now include the Red Sea crisis as another factor to their risk-adjusted inflation forecast. The Red Sea conflict centers on the Houthi rebel attacks which disrupted the trade routes in the Suez Canal. This affects the Philippines because oil imports bound for the country passes through the Suez Canal.

The changing labor conditions in the country is another upside risks that could be more of a risk than expected, according to Dakila.

The slowing growth in the global economy, and this already includes China, is a previously cited downside risk to inflation. The El Nino weather phenomenon – originally estimated to last only until March this year, is now expected to extend until the second quarter 2024.

The biggest upside risks to the inflation outlook is the spillovers such as second-round effects. This is electricity rates, transport fare hikes and wage increases.

As for the economy, Remolona said he has more confidence now that the economy will perform better this year.
