2025 National Age Group Triathlon Subic Bay Freeport race set for January 25-26, registration ongoing

The 2025 season opener of the National Age Group Triathlon (NAGT) series is set to take place on January 25 and 26 at the Subic Bay Boardwalk inside the Subic Bay Freeport Zone and registration is ongoing.

A part of Triathlon Philippines’ (TriPhil) triathlon try-outs and talent identification program for the Philippine Triathlon Team, the 2025 National Age Group Triathlon – Subic Bay race will have race distances as follows:

● Super Trikids:

○ 6-under 50m swim- 1km bike – 400m run

○ 7-8 yrs. old 100m swim – 2km bike – 800m run

○ 9-10 yrs. old 200m swim – 6km bike – 1 Km run

○ 11-12 yrs. old 400m swim – 8km bike – 2km run

● U15: 500m swim – 10km bike – 2km run

● Sprint Distance: 750m swim – 20km bike – 5km run

● Standard Distance: 1.5km swim – 40km bike – 10km run (Individual and Team Relay)

The participants’ categories (Top 3) are listed as follows:

● Super Trikids (6 and under, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12)

● U15 (13-15 Boys & Girls Only)

4th Asian Youth Games (AYG) set for September 7 to 17, 2025 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan

The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) announced that the 4^th Asian Youth Games (AYG) will take place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan from September 7 to 17, 2025.

A total of 24 sports have been confirmed for the AYG which goes as follows: Athletics, Basketball, Cycling, Football and Futsal, Hand to Fight, Karate, Sambo, Volleyball, Aquatics, Belbolgi Kurash, Chess, Gymnastics, Judo, Kurash, Triathlon, Weightlifting, Boxing, Canoe, Fencing, Handball, Jiu-Jitsu, Rowing, Taekwondo and Wrestling.

As per the OCA Constitution, athletes in the age group of 14 to 17 years will only be allowed to participate in the AYG. This is being done in order for these athletes to participate in the 2026 Dakar Youth Olympic Games.

To compete in the Youth Olympic Games (YOG), athletes must be 15 to 18 years old as of 31 December in the year of the Games. The OCA aims to prepare future AYG athletes for the YOG, which is why it has aligned age limits with the YOG criteria. This allows National Olympic Committees (NOCs) to adequately prepare their athletes for participation in the YOG.

The OCA states that athletes should be born not before 2008 and not after 2011 and should be between 14 to 17 years of age as of 31st December 2025.

Destination of the Year award for 2023 goes to Subic Bay

Recently the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) got recognized yet again in the field of sports tourism as it won the Destination of the Year award for 2023 during the 6^th Philippine Sports Tourism Awards, according to the social media announcement via the FUNtastic Subic Bay Facebook page.

I personally have visited the Subic Bay Freeport Zone (SBFZ) from time to time since 1994. I have witnessed how much Subic Bay evolved as a tourism destination, a shopping destination as well as a special events destination. The tourism team of the SBMA has a long track record of sports tourism development and the hosting of many kinds of sports events. That being said, it is not surprising to me that the SBMA won another sports tourism award.

For the newcomers reading this, Subic Bay was the host venue of selected events of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games). Each year, Triathlon Philippines (TriPhil) organizes the Subic Bay International Triathlon (SuBIT) there.

Multi-medalist figure skater meets Las Piñas Mayor and Vice Mayor at City Hall

Recently in the City of Las Piñas, local resident Julian Jean Quijano Plata – who won multiple medals in figure skating overseas – was welcomed by the Mayor and Vice Mayor at City Hall and went on to have a discussion, the City Government announced via social media.

Las Piñas City Mayor Imelda Aguilar and Vice Mayor April Aguilar warmly welcomed Julian Jean Quijano Plata, a young figure skater from Las Piñas City National Science High School, during her courtesy visit at the City Hall on Tuesday, September 24. The student recently brought pride to the city by winning multiple gold and silver medals at the Skate Asia 2024 competition held in Taipei, Taiwan, from August 3-11, 2024. Her impressive performance in categories such as Freestyle 4, Artistic FS4, and Solo Compulsories earned recognition for both her school and the city.

During the visit, Mayor Mel and Vice Mayor April congratulated the skater for her achievements and for being a positive representative of Las Piñas in an international competition. The young athlete expressed her gratitude for the support of her family, acknowledging their role in her success.

The Aguilar administration recognized the hard work and determination displayed by the skater, emphasizing that her accomplishments serve as an inspiration to the youth of Las Piñas.

Remolino and Burgos top National Age Group Aquathlon 2024 at Ayala Vermosa Sports Hub

This past weekend, Southeast Asia Games (SEA Games) medalists Andrew Kim Remolino and Erika Nicole Burgos topped the National Age Group Aquathlon 2024 event at the Ayala Vermosa Sports Hub in Cavite.

Andrew Kim Remolino lived up to expectations and defended the men’s elite title in the National Age Group Aquathlon 2024 at Ayala Vermosa Sports Hub in Imus, Cavite on Sunday. The event is part of the preparations for the 2025 Southeast Asian Games (2025 SEA Games) which will be held in Thailand.

Remolino, a native of Talisay City in Cebu province, finished the 500-meter swim and 2.5-kilometer run event in 15 minutes and 12 seconds.

Joshua Alexander Ramos of Baguio Benguet Triathlon secured the silver medal in 15:27 while Matthew Justine Hermosa, another Cebuano, settled for the bronze medal in 15:39.

“I’m so happy because we have been preparing for this tournament for months. We had back-to-back races the past weeks. We’re glad that we were able to deliver a good performance here,” the 23-year-old Remolino, a silver medalist in aquathlon at the 2023 Cambodia Southeast Asian Games (SEAG), said.

In the women’s division, 22-year-old Erika Nicole Burgos of Tanauan City, Batangas registered a personal-best 17:28 to claim the gold medal in the tournament organized by the Triathlon Philippines. Raven Faith Alcoseba, also from Cebu, placed second in 17:52, while Katrina Salazar was third in 18:01.

“I didn’t expect today’s results and I just have to keep working for the next race,” Burgos, a senior sports science student from University of the Philippines, said.

She was part of the winning mixed team, also in the Cambodia SEAG, with Hermosa, Iñaki Emil Lorbes and Kira Ellis.

Meanwhile, Singaporean Cheng Yu Lim topped the men’s junior elite category in 15:19. Filipinos Dayshaun Ramos (15:52) and Juan Miguel Tayag (16:40) were second and third, respectively.

Dhana Victoria Seda-Lomboy clocked 19:26 to bag the gold medal in the women’s division. Candace Marie Socito (20:49) took the silver and Edellaine Mae Diggs (21:30) got the bronze.

In the men’s division of the Youth (13-15 yearS) category, Peter Sancho Del Rosario pocketed the gold medal in 13:45.

Diego Jose Dimayuga (14:05) captured the silver medal and Euan Arrow Ramos (14:17) grabbed the bronze medal.

The top three finishers in the women’s division were Thailand’s Pitchanart Sripipom (16:08), Filipino Christy Ann Perez (16:26) and Singaporean Nur Isabella Schiering (16:44).

Muntinlupa City government congratulates its 2024 Palarong Pambansa medalists

Recently in the City of Muntinlupa, the City Government congratulated via social media their local athletes who won medals in the recent 2024 Palarong Pambansa which was held in Cebu with the National Capital Region (NCR) as the overall champion with 98 gold medals, 66 silver medals and 74 bronze medals.

The recognized gold medalists of Muntinlupa at the Palarong Pambansa were Maxine Amira Filiciano Bondoc and Avielle Paduit Caballes in the Gymnastics Elementary Girls category, Alessandra Therese A. Martin in the Swimming Elementary Girls category, and the team of De La Salle Santiago Zobel School in the Baseball Secondary Boys category.

The Muntinlupa silver medalists recognized were Jobelle Mitch De Sisto Villanueva and Krista Joy Chavez Tabios in the Arnis Secondary Girls category, and Avielle Paduit Caballes and Maxine Amira Filiciano Bondoc in the Gymnastics Elementary Girls category.

The bronze medalists were Hernalou E. Lumandao and Pi Durden Forward Wangkay in the Athletics Secondary Boys category, Avielle Paduit Caballes in the Gymnastics Elementary Girls category and Ma. Ana Therese V. Gomobao in the Table Tennis Secondary Girls category.

What to watch on YouTube right now – Part 26

Welcome back, my readers, YouTube viewers and all others who followed this series of articles focused on YouTube videos worth watching. Have you been searching for something fun or interesting to watch on YouTube? Do you feel bored right now and you crave for something to see on the world’s most popular online video destination?

I recommend you check out the following topics and the related videos I found.

#1 More Unsolved Mysteries Season 1 episodes – I have always been a fan of the Unsolved Mysteries TV series since the early 1990s. Apart from the great hosting and narration by the late Robert Stack, Unsolved Mysteries’ creative team was consistent in producing live-action interpretations of true crime stories, UFO stories, missing persons stories, ghost stories and other tales with a high level of quality. I also love their attention to details sourced from police reports, law enforcers and interviews of eye witnesses. Not only that, Unsolved Mysteries also helped in capturing wanted criminals and reunited family members who were separated for a long time. This was evident from their first season and posted below are further Season 1 episodes for you to enjoy.

#2 Videodrome reaction video by You, Me and the Movies – Recently, YouTuber team You, Me and the Movies published their movie reaction video of Videodrome which was a very intriguing and shocking movie directed by David Cronenberg. If you don’t mind the spoilers, this is an entertaining reaction video to watch.

#3 RollerGames episodes in high-definition – When I was very young, I was able to watch on local TV here in the Philippines the episodes of RollerGames which showcased a series of action-packed and intriguing roller derby rounds. This was one of those alternative sports competitions that was entertaining to watch and it even shared certain elements with professional wrestling shows with regards to tension between competitors and the show’s notable personalities. The good news here is that the RollerGames episodes have been restored in high-definition and posted below are the first four episodes for your enjoyment.

#4 The Aliens arcade game from Konami – I remember back in the early 1990s – before the debut of Street Fighter II and all those other fighting games that followed – Aliens (by Konami) was a big attraction in local arcades. Loosely based on the 1986 sci-fi action movie directed by James Cameron, Aliens the arcade game was an action-packed 2D scrolling game in which players have to move to their destination while firing their guns against multiple waves of Xenomorphs, Facehuggers and other variants of monsters. This was a highly entertaining game that never got ported into any console, and you can learn more about Konami’s Aliens by watching PatmanQC’s video below.

#5 Xbox Game Pass adjustments – Recently, Microsoft announced big changes to Xbox Game Pass (XGP) which has divided both subscribers and gamers in general. Apart from the price increases, there are also changes on the policies and what subscribers get in return for paying more or less. Personally, I don’t like what Team Xbox came up with. Philippines wins Mixed Junior Relay gold medal in the 2024 Asia Triathlon Junior Cup Kampar

The Philippines won another gold medal of the Mixed Junior Relay competition of the 2024 Asia Triathlon Junior Cup which was held at Kampar, Malaysia, yesterday.

The Philippines – composed of Matthew Hermosa, Kira Ellis, Samantha Corpuz, and Dayshaun Ramos – topped the contest (distances of 375m swimming – 5 Km biking – 1.5 Km running) with a collective time of 1 hour, 27 minutes and 51 seconds (1:27:51). Ellis and Hermosa were members of the same Philippine squad that won the Mixed Aquathlon 4X Team Relay event of the 32^nd Southeast Asian Games. Ellis won the gold of the Junior Women contest on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong clocked in 1:29:33 for the silver medal while Uzbekistan finished in 1:32:45 for the bronze medal of the Mixed Junior Relay contest. To see the complete results of the race, click here.

In other contests of the 2024 Asia Triathlon Junior Cup, Eleora Avanzado and Cristy Perez of the Philippines finished 4^th and 5^th place respectively in the U15 Women contest. Avanzado was behind bronze medalist Alexandra Sharayeva of Uzbekistan by less than 10 seconds.

Kira Ellis wins Junior Women gold medal in 2024 Asia Triathlon Junior Cup Kampar

Kira Ellis of the Philippines won the gold medal of the Junior Women triathlon contest of the 2024 Asia Triathlon Junior Cup held at Kampar, Malaysia.

Ellis won the sprint distance (750 M swim – 20 Km bike – 5 Km run) Junior Women race in one hour, five minutes and thirty-two seconds (1:05:32). Her opponents Seoeun Park (South Korea) and Diana Biktimrova (Uzbekistan) followed at 2^nd and 3^rd place with times of 1:07:42 and 1:07:45 respectively.

Meanwhile, Ellis’ teammate Samantha Corpuz finished at 4^th place clocking in 1:08:02. For the complete results of the Junior Women contest, click here.

According to a news release from Triathlon Philippines, Kira Ellis showed tremendous improvements after a Philippine Sports Commission-funded five-week training camp in Portugal under coach Sergio Santos. She competed in the tough European Junior Cup in Hungary last Sunday where she qualified to the finals and placed 16th among 30 competitors.
