San Miguel Corporation’s “Better Rivers PH” initiative removes 93,000 tons of silt and waste from Parañaque rivers

Parañaque City benefited from the “Better Rivers PH” initiative of San Miguel Corporation (SMC) as ninety-three thousand tons of silt and waste was removed from the rivers of the city and other improvements were also done, according to a Business Mirror news report.

San Miguel Corp.’s (SMC) “Better Rivers PH” initiative has removed 93,000 tons of silt and waste from Parañaque rivers as of January 23.

The company said this effort aims to improve water flow and address perennial flooding at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) and surrounding areas.

The cleanup covers 1.9 kilometers of river channels, including the Parañaque River, Don Galo River, and their junctions with the San Dionisio and Villanueva creeks.

In addition to river cleanups, SMC has also de-clogged storm drain lines along Domestic Road and NAIA Terminal 4. This included reopening 54 manholes and constructing 10 new ones for better access and maintenance. These upgrades are seen to sustain flood prevention efforts around the airport complex.

SMC’s efforts, carried out at no cost to the government or taxpayers, are part of a broader mission to restore waterways and reduce flooding in urban areas.

Bathymetric surveys in Parañaque identified bottlenecks in river systems that restricted water flow to Manila Bay, prompting targeted cleanup and desilting operations in critical areas. The project benefits from the active involvement of key government agencies such as the Department of Transportation (DOTr), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), and the local government of Parañaque.

“Flooding has been a long-standing issue for Parañaque and NAIA, particularly during typhoon season,” said SMC Chairman and CEO Ramon S. Ang. “Through Better Rivers PH and with support from government agencies, we were able to implement sustainable solutions that we hope will deliver lasting benefits to residents, businesses, and travelers.”

Three major Japanese investors plan to expand operations in PEZA ecozones

With all the uncertainty and economic challenges going on, the economy of the Philippines could get a much-needed boost as the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) revealed that three major Japanese investors are planning to expand their existing operations in the country, according to a Manila Bulletin news report.

The Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) disclosed that three major Japanese investors are planning to expand their operations in the Philippines.

PEZA Director General Tereso Panga, who was guest speaker during an Economic Seminar in Tokyo recently, reported that he held talks with long-time PEZA investors Tsuneishi, electronics manufacturing firm SIIX Co., and automobile manufacturer FCC Co., Ltd.  The seminar hosted by Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp. was attended by 140 Japanese firms.

According to PEZA, Tsuneishi is preparing for its fifth phase of expansion, including projects to manufacture the world’s first methanol-fueled TEU container carriers and establishing a wood pelletizing business.

Since 1994, the Japanese shipbuilder has already expanded its Philippine operations four times. Its first project was its shipbuilding business in Balamban, Cebu which grew to a 170-hectare facility from 25 hectares.

It also employs around 10,000 direct and subcontracted employees, a long way from the mere 300 workers it had when it began operations.

In Panga’s meeting with SIIX Co.,Ltd, its President Koji Yanase said they see their Philippine operations “playing a crucial role as they expand their core business and enter new territories.”

SIIX Co. has been engaging with the Philippines since 1957 as with the establishment of the first offshore operations for their ink production in the country.

The company said that it will manufacture its patented conductive ink in the Philippines, according to Panga.

Meanwhile, Yoshitaka Saito’s FCC Co. said they expect their Philippine operations to grow in the coming years as they ramp up “manufacturing of the clutch for Honda Click 125 motorcycle, production of paper ceramics for other electronics component manufacturers, and investment in new advanced technology businesses that will involve the assembly line for scooters, lining molding line, and weight line.”

FCC is also eyeing involvement in the country’s circular economy through using solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) for water filtration and production of solid biomass fuel.

Ayuda sa Atleta campaign launched

A special campaign to help raise funds and donations in-kind for national athletes, both regular and the differently abled ones, and dubbed AYUDA SA ATLETA, was launched recently as an initiative of the private sector to help them in these difficult times of the pandemic.

Triathlon President and former Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) chairman Tom Carrasco and veteran sports journalist and management consultant Lito Cinco, who wrote about the need for a community pantry of assistance to national athletes in his column The Bottom Line last April 21, co-lead the group. Joining them are sepak takraw President and POC official Karen Tanchanco Caballero, sports science figure and former national archer Nino Sinco, and sportsman/sports patron Alex Wang of Wang’s Ballclub.

The group is tasked to plan and manage the program, from raising funds all the way to distribution of the assistance to the recipients, initially with the differently-abled athletes who are more in need, “We know we cannot cover the total 1,500 number of national athletes and coaches, that is why decided to start off with the differently-abled ones and are in touch with PHILSPADA to get the complete roster,“ said Carrasco.

“We have categorized the assistance in the form of vitamins, sports drinks, energy bars, and personal hygiene items for those who would like to give in kind. Fortunately, Cebuana Lhuillier President/CEO Jean Henri Lhuillier, himself a sports man and long-time supporter of Philippine sports has jumpstarted the program with a P250,000 donation. We hope other sports-loving companies and individuals will follow his lead, our national athletes who have brought us honor certainly deserve to be helped during this pandemic,“ added Carrasco, whose company, Asian Centre for Insulation Philippines also donated P25,000 to the cause.

On his part, Cinco who has been long involved in projects for the needy, including current community pantries in Mandaluyong, said, “I was inspired by what I have seen about this community program that has grown all over and I thought, why not initiate one for athletes, and wrote about it . The following day after my column came out, I got a call from Cebuana Lhuillier pledging assistance. I was not really surprised about the help extended as I have known Jean Henri as sports patron for a long time.”

Solicitation letters will be sent to various companies and individuals for cash and in-kind donations, with the group promising transparency for all funds received and expenses made.

“Our target is to start the distribution to athletes by June to give us time to raise more donations so we can cover more athletes,“ concluded Carrasco.

A Look Back at The Solution #6 (1994)

As this is another retro  review of another Ultraverse comic book written by the late James Hudnall, I encourage you to take time to check out his background and other works via Comic Book Resource’s report of his death on April 2019.

In memory of James Hudnall, here are his words published near the end of The Solution :

The Solution is a dream team for me. I’ve been wanting to mix the genres of fantasy and cyberpunk science fiction with the super-hero genre for some time. Add my love of Japanese animation and Hong Kong cinema and you can see where I’m coming from here. This series is designed to show us some of the more bizarre and dark sectors of the Ultraverse without, hopefully, falling into the trap many similar books do where they lay it on too thick. The Ultraverse is a complex and multi-faceted universe and our books explore different sides. Here I want to delve deep into the criminal and espionage arenas as well as the magic sub-cultures that exist.

The characters themselves have a rich and interesting history that I plan to slowly unveil as the series progresses. When you first meet someone, you usually don’t know that much about the person. The characters are rather deep, as we will discover, and their personalities and more complex than you’re probably used to seeing in comics.

Now we can start this look back at The Solution , the Ultraverse comic book published in 1994 by Malibu Comics with a story written by James Hudnall and illustrated by John Statema (with ink work by Dennis Jensen and Mark Stegbauer).

Early story

The story begins with Lela Cho (Tech) alone paying respect to her father at his grave. She tearfully recalls what happened right after he died.

The narrative then shifts to 1993, specifically the day her father was about to get buried with many guests involved. Even though she is mourning, a man with blonde hair approaches her. His name is Kyle Sanders and he tells her she wants to talk to her about the corporation called Hypersonic. After receiving his business card, Lela feels a strange sense of dread creeping up on her.

A few days later, Lela attends a Board of Directors meeting at the headquarters of Hypersonic. She reminds them that she inherited all of her father’s shares in the company that makes her a majority stockholder and it was written in his will that she will assume his post as Chairman of the Board. Even though she already earned her Master’s Degree in Business at Harvard, the BOD members rejected her on the grounds that she’s too young and has no previous practical experience. They expressed that it would be better for her to work within the company and climb her way up.

Even though she got rejected and found herself alone, she decided not to give up and move forward by visiting NuWare, a corporation in San Francisco, California, that specializes on bio-tech implants (Wetware) that can make a person an Ultra…

Lela Cho/Tech in action!

This is a very compelling, character-driven comic book, one of the best of the Ultraverse I read as of this writing. Clearly the late Hudnall achieved his goal of not only developing Lela Cho/Tech, but also defining her as a living part within the Ultraverse. Speaking of the Ultraverse, there is this nice and subtle connection with certain people regarding The Strangers.

Back to Lela Cho, her personality was very deeply defined by Hudnall. By the time you reach the end of this comic book, you should at least be caring about her even though her status as a super-rich lady trying to make her way up in business (while protecting herself) puts her on a different class. Ultimately her transformation into an Ultra is special to read and examine, even worthy of a cinematic adaptation.

Regarding the visuals, John Statema pulled of a great job. I love how the facial expressions he illustrated brought out the ranging emotions of the characters, specifically with Lela. When she’s mad, she really looks mad. When she is sad, you will see the sadness. Regarding action, Statema’s effort was decent.

Really nice art and good choice with the colors for the light effect.

I really liked The Solution . From start to finish, it kept me very engaged and ultimately it made me understand Lela Cho/Tech much better, which also made me go back to re-reading the first issue.

Overall, The Solution is highly recommended.
