Japanese leisure services firm to invest P2.5 billion in the Philippines

Koshidaka Holdings, a leisure services firm based in Japan, will be investing P2.5 billion in the Philippines and plans to launch its first store this year, according to a Philippine News Agency (PNA) news article. This development is related with the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) recent meetings with corporations in Japan. Kodaka Holdings has more than six hundred outlets in Japan and the Philippines is a key part of its planned expansion in Southeast Asia.

Japanese leisure services firm Koshidaka Holdings Co. Ltd. will be investing PHP2.5 billion in the country, with its first store set to open this year, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ma. Cristina Roque said.

In a virtual briefing Tuesday, Roque said Koshidaka is aggressive on its plans to expand in the country to bring its karaoke business and onsen-style (hot spring) spas as well as opening women’s fitness studios in Philippine malls.

The Japanese firm is scouting for 30 locations to establish its business here before growing to 100 sites nationwide.

Koshidaka is one of the 13 firms and business organizations that Roque met during her recent visit in Tokyo as a follow-through of the agency’s investment missions in Japan.

These firms include Nidec Corp., Ibiden Co., Ltd., Etoile Kaito & Co., Inc, Adastria Co., Ltd., Sumitomo, Fujifilm Holdings Corp., Chodai Co., Ltd. Taiheiyo Cement Corp., Fast Retailing, JR East, and Koshidaka Holdings Co., Ltd as well Keizai Doyukai and Keidanren.

“We also check on their plans, what their plans are in our country for expansion and also for growth,” Roque said.

Earlier, Koshidaka announced that it would establish a Philippine subsidiary to offer a new style of karaoke entertainment.

Koshidaka said its expansion in the Philippines is a key initiative in its Southeast Asia growth strategy, with the country’s large market and economic development.

“Aside from the entertainment, they also want to open a gym that’s really just focused on women all over the country, and they also want to focus on creating Japanese onsen in the malls or in different areas that are of interest to them,” Roque said.

“So they’re actually coming first quarter this year to really explore the different locations where they can open.”

The Philippines earned USD1.1 billion or PHP65.3 billion tourism revenues in January 2025, exceeding pre-pandemic levels in 2019, the Department of Tourism (DOT) said Thursday.

Data as of Feb. 28 showed that the earnings came from various activities, products, and services related to tourism, 136.1 percent higher than the USD821 million or 151.46 percent higher than the PHP43 billion recorded in January 2019.

“The recovery of Philippine tourism from the period of the pandemic in terms of revenues translates to thousands of jobs created for Filipinos, providing livelihood opportunities for many, especially in our rural and underserved areas,” Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco said in a news release.

The country’s tourism income grew by 71.4 percent in terms of US dollars, compared to the USD652,255,773.51 recorded in January 2024.

Philippine peso revenues also soared by 78.81 percent from PHP36,508,238,043 in January 2024.

Frasco reported the Philippines achieved an all-time high tourism revenue of approximately PHP760 billion in 2024.

The DOT recorded the Philippines’ tourism revenues based on Visitor Sample Surveys, records from the previous arrival/departure cards, shipping manifests, and the current eTravel system.

A total of 1,167,908 foreign travelers visited the country in the first two months of 2025. Data as of March 1 showed that about 25.31 percent of the visitors came from South Korea.

South Korea has been the country’s top source of tourists since 2023, which is expected to boost further with the appointment of South Korean star Seo In-Guk as “celebrity tourism ambassador for the Philippines” last month.

While the P65.3 billion tourism revenue for January 2025 looks great for the Philippines, it remains to be seen if it could maintain the pace until the end of the year. In order to match the record P760.5 billion tourism revenue of 2024, the Philippines needs to attract P63.375 billion per month this year. If Philippine tourism can achieve P65 billion per month, that would translate to P780 billion by the end of the year.

Recently, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) announced that the inflation rate of February 2025 settled at 2.1% primarily due to the easing of rate of price increases on non-alcoholic beverages and food, according to a Philippine News Agency (PNA) news article.

Inflation in February this year slowed down to 2.1 percent from 2.9 percent in January mainly due to the easing of rate of price increase of food and non-alcoholic beverages, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported.

In a press briefing Wednesday, PSA Assistant Secretary Divina Gracia del Prado said the declaration of food security emergency by the Department of Agriculture (DA) to bring down cost of rice has been effective in taming the inflation last month.

Inflation of food and non-alcoholic beverages, which contributed 58.8 percent to the overall inflation last month, declined to 2.6 percent from 3.8 percent in January.

Cereal and cereal products, which include rice, had a deflation of 3 percent in February from a deflation of 1.1 percent in January.

“For me, I think, we are seeing the effect of food security emergency in our inflation… Because of this food security emergency, we have released the rice buffer from NFA (National Food Authority) to LGUs (local government units), and of course in Kadiwa Rice for All program,” del Prado said.

Rice alone had a sharper deflation of 4.9 percent, with prices decreasing since July 2024 due to easing international prices and tariff reduction. Vegetable inflation plunged to 7.1 percent in February from a 21.1 percent inflation in January.

Aside from food and non-alcoholic beverages, main contributors to the deceleration of inflation in February were housing, water, gas, and other fuels, which inflation eased to 1.6 percent from 2.2 percent in January, and transport, which recorded a deflation of 0.2 percent from 1.1 percent inflation rate

Meanwhile, major contributors to inflation in February were food and non-alcoholic beverages, mainly due to higher prices of pork, with inflation increasing to 12.1 percent in February from 8.4 percent in January; restaurants, café and the like; poultry meat; rentals; and higher cost of passenger transport by sea.

In a separate statement, National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Secretary Arsenio Balisacan said the government stands ready to combat high inflation through its policies and programs.

“The government will sustain its efforts to keep inflation low and manageable to protect the purchasing power of Filipinos. As we expect six to 13 typhoons to develop from March to August 2025, the Department of Agriculture (DA) will implement the La Niña action plan to restore agricultural productive capacity in areas likely to be affected by continuous rainfall, flooding, and landslides,” Balisacan said.

Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ma. Cristina Roque said Wednesday the Corporate Recovery and Tax Incentives for Enterprises to Maximize Opportunities for Reinvigorating the Economy (CREATE MORE) law has attracted Japanese companies to invest in the country.

Roque and Special Assistant to the President for Economic Affairs and Investments Secretary Frederick Go visited Japan from March 3 to 4 to meet Japanese companies and business groups.

The DTI said during the visit, four companies pledged PHP23.5 billion worth of investments.

“Representing both the government and private sectors, those we engaged with expressed excitement and enthusiasm about collaborating with us, inspired by the positive developments they’ve heard about our country—our robust economic fundamentals and reformed policies and regulations,” Roque said.

“Specifically, what caught their attention was the recently enacted CREATE MORE law, which offers enhanced tax incentives, simplified processes, and greater opportunities for businesses to thrive in the Philippines,” she added.

Among Japanese companies that the Philippine government officials met include Ibiden Co., Ltd., Nidec Corp. and Sumitomo Corp.

The Philippine Trade and Investment Center (PTIC)-Tokyo told the Philippine News Agency that two of these companies are eyeing fresh investments in the country, while one of them is updating its three-year investment pledge.

DTI said Ibiden expressed its prospect for expanding its advanced substrate technologies operations, while Nidec eyes to expand its manufacturing footprint here.

On the other hand, Sumitomo renewed its commitment to collaborate with the Marcos administration’s infrastructure and clean energy goals.

Sumitomo’s project in the Philippines include the Metro Manila Subway Project, the MRT Line 3 maintenance contract, and the First Philippine Industrial Park.

Roque also had meetings with Fast Retailing Co. Ltd., the firm behind clothing brand Uniqlo, as well as the Japan Association of Corporate Executives (Keizai Doyukai) and the Japan Business Federation (Keidanren).

“The Comelec is not conducting these debates, but other groups and organizations. That is really up to them,” he said.

Philippine economic growth is expected to accelerate this year on the back of higher investments and consumption, an economist of UBS Investment Bank Global Research said.

In a virtual briefing on Wednesday, UBS Investment Bank Global Research Senior ASEAN and Asia Economist Grace Lim said the Philippine economy is projected to grow by 5.9 percent this year from 5.6 percent in 2024.

“We see an improving growth outlook for the Philippines,” Lim said. “The underlying positive growth delta is driven by domestic demand as both investment and consumption accelerate in 2025.“

She said private investments would recover gradually as financial conditions become less restrictive and consumer sentiment gradually picks up. Solid labor income growth and the easing of food inflation will also help boost consumption growth.

“Consumption, as well, is likely to be positive amidst the improving fundamentals and the resilient labor market, which, I should add, is one of the most significant support for Philippines demand,” she said.

Lim said government spending and the continued growth in services exports would also support economic growth.

“What is also often underappreciated is the bright spot of services exports, especially in the BPO sector,” she said.

Lim said she expects the country’s BPO sector to remain resilient this year.

Higher tariffs – Asked about the impact of tariff trade escalation on the Philippine economy, Lim said the Philippines is in a “rather defensive market in the event of potential trade tariff escalation.”

“That’s because the Philippines is primarily domestic-oriented with investment as a percentage of GDP 23 percent, consumption over 70 percent. So not very trade-exposed,” she said.

She pointed out that in the case of trade tariff escalation, the Philippine peso could also be a relative outperformer in the region.

“That said, we do think that if tariffs are universal, then obviously there could be weaker prospects for currencies in general, but even in that scenario, it would not be a very big depreciation,” she said.

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Friday announced the arrest of 20 foreign nationals operating an illegal Philippine offshore gaming operator (POGO) hub in Parañaque City.

In a statement on Friday, the NBI said the suspects were arrested in an operation on Feb. 25 at Aseana 3, West Tower, 8912 Avenue, following a complaint of the wife of a Chinese national working for a POGO company operating under the trade name “LWE.”

She alleged that her husband, who worked as a customer service representative, was being held against his will by his employers.

During the operation, agents of the NBI Special Task Force uncovered a fully operational online scam hub.

The arrested foreigners have been charged before the city prosecutor’s office for violating Section 4(b)(1) (Social Engineering Schemes) of Republic Act (RA) 12010, or the Anti-Financial Account Scamming Act (AFASA) in relation to RA 10175, or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.

Joshua Alexander Ramos delivered a fine performance to claim victory in the Standard Men Elite of the National Age Group Aquathlon 2025 at the Ayala-Vermosa Sports Hub in Imus, Cavite on Saturday.

The 23-year-old member of the Baguio Benguet Triathlon club clocked 31 minutes and 19 seconds in the 1km-swim and 5km-run competition.

“I joined this tournament to test my fitness and I’m glad I won,” said Ramos, a second-year marketing management student at the University of Baguio.

Last year, he was runner-up to Cebuano Kim Andrew Remolino in the race that only covered 500 meters (swim) and 2.5 km. (run).

Remolino and Matthew Hermosa did not join due to a Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) regional qualifying.

“Even if they are not here, I can say that I gave my best,” said Ramos, who won four medals in swimming – two golds (400m and 1500 freestyle), one silver (4x200m freestyle), and one bronze (4×100 freestyle) at the 2024 PRISAA National Games in Legazpi City, Albay.

Iñaki Emil Lorbes registered 31:28 to finish second despite nursing a right ankle injury he sustained two weeks ago in training. Irienold Reig Jr. (32:12) was third.

Meanwhile, Erika Nicole Burgos defended the women’s title, clocking 34 minutes and 17 seconds to prevail over Wan Ting of Singapore (35:01) and Lady Samantha Jhunace Corpuz (35:50).

“The course is difficult, it’s exhausting,” said Burgos of Tanauan, Batangas.

She will join the National Age Group Duathlon on Sunday.

“I’ll do my best to win (in the National),” said Burgos, who won the gold medal in the 2023 Asian Duathlon Championships at the New Clark City Sports Complex.

In the Junior Elite category, Joshua’s younger brother, Dayshaun Karl, topped the men’s division in 16:37. Darell Johnson Bada (16:40) ranked second followed by Peter Sancho Del Rosario (16:44).

Dhana Victoria Seda-Lomboy clocked 18:45 to win the women’s title over Maria Celinda Raagas (21:42).

Edison Badillo (PTS2), Raul Angoluan (PTS3), Alex Silverio (PTS4), and Joshua Nelmida with guide Bernard Matthew Cruz (PTVI) won their respective divisions in the para category of the event organized by the Triathlon Philippines (TriPhil) headed by Tom Carrasco.

The 2025 National Age Group Aquathlon event in Vermosa was sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission, Milo, Asian Center for Insulation, Gatorade, Fitbar, and RaceYa.

Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) Director General Tereso Panga is expecting more investors to put up their businesses in economic zones across the country following the signing of the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) of the Corporate Recovery and Tax Incentives for Enterprises to Maximize Opportunities for Reinvigorating the Economy (CREATE MORE) Act.

On Feb. 17, Finance Secretary Ralph Recto and Trade Secretary Ma. Cristina Roque led the signing of the CREATE MORE’s IRR.

The IRR supports PEZA’s mandate of driving investment growth into the country, promote sustainable development in the countryside, and create more jobs.

“The CREATE MORE Act refines the investment landscape of the Philippines to be at parity with other countries,” he said.

“With these new policies in place, coupled with the positive attributes already presented by our country and the various advantages like a communications-ready skilled workforce, a conducive business environment and a whole-of-government approach, it is without doubt that new investors will come in and old investors will choose to stay for the long haul,” he added.

I Love Israel: Israel turns over new learning center to school in Taguig City

As some of you are already aware, I fully stand with Israel which is very connected with my uncompromising faith in the Lord. I keep on praying to Him for Israel to overwhelm its enemies, rescue the hostages and recover from the effects of the October 7, 2023 terrorist attacks committed by the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas which is sponsored by terrorist state Iran. I can assure all of you that nobody from the evil Islamo-Leftist mob, nobody from the pro-Palestine radicals, nobody from the political correctness extremists, and nobody from evil societies would stop me from supporting and loving Israel.

Now, on with the news…

In another move of generosity for the Philippines, Israeli aid agency MASHAV donated a new learning center for the benefit of the students of Urusan Elementary School (UES) in Taguig City, according to a Philippine News Agency (PNA) news article. MASHAV Head Ambassador Eynat Shlein, Mayor Lani Cayetano and Israel Ambassador to the Philippines Ilan Fluss were present during the turnover.

To put things in perspective, posted below is the excerpt from the PNA news article. Some parts in boldface…

Israel’s aid agency MASHAV on Wednesday turned over a new learning center to the students of Ususan Elementary School (UES).

MASHAV Head Ambassador Eynat Shlein and Israel Ambassador to the Philippines Ilan Fluss, who led the unveiling ceremony in Taguig City, said this center signals Tel Aviv’s interest to continue and increase its development cooperation with the country.

The Nir Oz Resource Learning Center, named after one of the Israeli kibbutz attacked by the Hamas in October 2023, is complete with reading materials and equipment procured by the MASHAV.

“The learning center is one of the building stones of the joint quest between Israel and the Philippines for sustainable development. And if we want to get to development, we need to start from the beginning,” Shlein said.

“The beginning are the seeds and the seeds of the future are the children —we need to look after them,” she added.

On top of inspiring students to read more books, Shlein also hoped this center would promote friendship, understanding, and open-mindedness among them.

“The fact that we helped establish this refuge for children from daily teachings where they could sit and think and reconnect, for us, that is a building block for sustainable education,” she said.

“Education is a core beacon in our work, and as we have worked already in 140 countries and trained hundreds of thousands of people, out of which many thousands are Filipinos, we are happy to continue on this joyful bilateral track.“

In a separate interview, Fluss said Israel is also planning to partner with more stakeholders to finance similar centers in other areas outside Metro Manila.

“It’s very humble but that’s the Israeli approach —we believe in the development of human resources, even in other programs, we always look at capacity building,” he said.

This newest development shows the continuing growth of Israel-Philippines ties through education. Israel can keep contributing to improve the standards of education and help elementary students learn better.  Thank the Lord for this breakthrough as well as the continuing cooperation between Israel and the Philippines.

To my fellow Filipinos reading this, I encourage you to accept the truth that Israel is the land God designated specifically for the Jewish people (read Genesis 35:10-12) and His command must be followed without hesitation. If you want to be blessed further by the Lord, do so by loving and blessing the Jewish people (Genesis 12:1-3). I did my part when I was in Israel. Also, let me remind you all that the ties between the Jews and Christians are truly biblical!

I encourage you all to pray to the Lord God in support of Israel, to love and bless the Jewish people, and pray for the peace of Jerusalem. Pray to Him so that Israel-Philippines ties and cooperation will keep growing stronger in the many years ahead.

If you truly believe in Lord Jesus, the Holy Spirit and God the Heavenly Father wholeheartedly and you continue to be faithful, you should be aware that Christians are meant to stand united with Israel and love the Jewish people no matter what. You can do your part supporting Israel by donating to Christians United for Israel (CUFI). Do not forget to read the Holy Bible, then pray in tongues to the Lord in the privacy of your room with the door shut.

Always be the fearless and aggressive church of Lord Jesus! Always stand in support of Israel and its ties with the Philippines!
