The Don Tomas Aguirre Senior Citizens Center bustled with activity on April 27, 2019 as the medical mission attracted several members of the local community who got served with free services. Present were the personnel of MedTek and the directors of the BFPE&BCI.

A medical mission titled Care to Share was held from 6AM to 3PM on April 27, 2019 at the Don Tomas Aguirre Senior Citizens Center along F. Cabarrus street, Barangay BF Homes, Parañaque City which attracted a total of one hundred and thirty patients.

A joint project of the BF Parañaque Entrepreneurs & Business Club, Inc. (BFPE&BCI) and services provider MedTek with the participation of the Senior Citizens Association of Barangay BF, Inc. (SCABBI), Care to Share saw 112 patients avail of laboratory testing (which includes blood extraction), 90 patients who had their urine checked, 75 patients who had a medical check-up (with medicine given afterwards) and 42 patients who had their eyes checked (with eyeglasses provided afterwards).

All the services were rendered for free. Apart from the members of SCABBI, there were other people from the local community who just walked in and were happily accepted by the organizers to avail of the services.

Services aside, the patients were given free meals, drinks and snacks provided by varied sponsors of the medical mission. The meals were provided by MedTek, BFPE&BCI, Mama Lou’s, Little Quiapo, Ms. Julie Dacanay and Flaming Wings (through a concerned senior citizen who expressed his generosity for the local community). As if that was not enough, brand new electric fans were raffled off to some very lucky winners among the patients which lifted up their spirits. A “Sorbetero” was contracted for the day by BFPE&BCI to provide ice cream to everyone.

Not only that, the patients were fortunate to meet Barangay BF Homes chairman Paolo Marquez who took time out from his busy schedule to observe the medical mission.

Maria (2nd from right) and the MedTek personnel and volunteers posed in a group picture, led by Medtek’s Dra. Bing Kawano.

“The medical mission is an endeavor of MedTek and BFPE&BCI proving their corporate social responsibility to our constituents. Of course, we in the barangay support them and we appreciate any endeavors that they plan to do in the future,” Marquez said in my interview with him.

For his part, SCABBI president Elpidio Padama stated that the number of patients exceeded the mark of 100 because of other senior citizens who made referrals. Several directors of SCABBI were present and were thankful to the organizers that many of their members got served for free.

Already a successful event, Care to Share undeniably gave back to the local community in Barangay BF Homes in partnership with MedTek headed by its President Mr. Seling Catral and BFPE&BCI. The business club, led by its incumbent President Don Munoz (Pergola Mall, Noah’s Place), truly made its presence felt as a highly credible and generous business association focused on the BF Homes communities.

My Observations: Food for a Cause

There is nothing like enjoying a meal in support of a good cause.

IMG_20190213_113846~2.jpg
Really delicious pasta I bought to help a friend.

Today I bought from my friend Chicken Parmesan Pasta for lunch and enjoyed it not only because it was delicious but also because I helped her on her effort for a good cause.

So there I was at home about to watch local and foreign news on cable TV with a bowl containing portions of the Chicken Parmesan Pasta I brought home. As I watched the news unfold, I took bites and each bite was a delightful experience. The pasta was nicely cooked, it had a smooth and creamy texture and was flavorful enough I did not need any condiments for it. Oh yes, the chicken was something nice to chew with.

If you have a friend who is selling something good or useful to raise money for a good cause and you have money to spare, help your friend.

IMG_20190213_113938~2.jpg
So yummy!

As I enjoyed my friend’s pasta again today, I am thankful to her (she’s a talented cook as well as a very talented singer) and of course to the Lord for the blessing.

Here’s a scripture of thanksgiving from the Holy Bible.

For all things are for your sakes, that grace, having spread through the many, may cause thanksgiving to abound to the glory of God.

2 Corinthians 4: 15 (NKJV)

The Lord Rewards The Faithful Abundantly

After attending worship today, I reflected deeply on what was emphasized to us by our pastor which is very true – that the Lord rewards His faithful followers abundantly.

I personally can relate with that. For the past year of twenty-eighteen (2018), I have been very blessed by the Lord a lot since becoming Born Again. I did not just attend Sunday worship at our church. I also attended several Bible Study sessions, holy seminars and open prayer sessions. I did not just pray, I also read God’s Word with the Holy Bible, prayed in tongues (to edify my soul and truly communicate with Him), stopped living with the beggar mentality and developed a deeper relationship and faith with the Lord. I also humbled myself, learned that the fear of the Lord leads to enlightenment or wisdom and now I have a very different and more positive outlook. The blessings I received are not only financial but also personal and social in nature. I’m much happier, I’m no longer lonely and I’m now part of a tremendous community of faithful people.

To understand why God rewards the faithful a lot, let’s take a look at the scriptures from the Bible.

What profit has the worker from that in which he labors? I have seen the God-given task with which the sons of men are to be occupied. He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end. I know that nothing is better for them than to rejoice, and to do good in their lives, and also that every man should eat and drink and enjoy the good of all his labor it is the gift of God. I know that whatever God does, it shall be forever. Nothing can be added to it. And nothing can be taking from it. God does it, that men should fear before Him. That which is has already been, and what is to be has already been; And God required an account of what is past.

Ecclesiastes 3: 9-15 (NKJV)

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.

Galatians 6: 7 (NKJV)

For God is not unjust to forget your work and labor of love which you have shown toward His name, in that you have ministered to the saints, and do minister. And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end, that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

Hebrews 6: 10-12 (NKJV)

Jesus said: And behold, I am coming quickly and My reward is with Me, to give to everyone according to his work.

Revelations 22: 12 (NKJV)

As believers in the Lord, we each have a task from Him as well as an account required by Him. It’s like real world work and financing. At work we do our daily duties and get paid on Pay Day (every fifteen days) by means of financial transactions the money of which get deposited through the banks under our names (and this requires having an account with the bank already). Without an account with the bank, we cannot receive nor withdraw money with added security. Sure we can just have the paycheck(s) turned into cash over-the-counter by visiting the bank personally but who has time for that? Having an account with the bank is essential.

Back to the Lord, He requires an account from each of us and it has a lot more to do than just money. We followers are meant to be accountable to Him in terms of our faithfulness, what have we done with rewards He gave us already, and in order to receive further rewards from Him in return for not only being faithful but also for performing the tasks He gave to each of us.

God is gentle and loving. He has so much to reward each of us and in order to be rewarded we must do what He tasked us and we must prove we are truly faithful to Him. We can do good under the Lord by preaching His Word and spreading the good news to others around us, especially the people who are lost souls. Saving a lost soul will bring in a nice reward from the Lord.

God is a just Father and He does not break His own rules. He will not forget the work we rendered to His name. For sure a reward will be given once you proved your faithfulness and your accomplishment of the God-given task. The Lord Jesus will bring His reward that can be enjoyed.

In local society, a laborer can work very hard for so long and still not get the raise he/she deserves as there are employers who can be abusive or may be lacking resources to do it. Under Lord Jesus and God the Father, we don’t ever have to worry about such shortcomings as the rewards to be given to each of us will not only be satisfying but also abundant.

One more thing about rewards from the Lord – not everyone gets the same amount or the same kind of reward. We the faithful must realize that under the Lord, we each have a personal relationship with Him (note: strictly off-limits) and we have different tasks from Him which is related to what we are dealing with in local society as we live in the flesh. A faithful business person who does well can make a lot of good money and expand business connections in local society while a faithful poem composer can sell more of his/her literary works to consumers which rakes in additional funds (but the money coming in won’t go near what the successful, faithful business person makes). As the Lord Jesus said in Revelations 22: 12And behold, I am coming quickly and My reward is with Me, to give to everyone according to his work.

Ultimately, we can all keep the unwavering faith in the Lord, be faithful in Him, do whatever task He assigned to each of us and we can do more knowing fully well that He will reward us not only enough but abundantly. In other words, never worry that laboring under the Lord will lead to disappointment. God will never forsake us as He loves us, He gave us His Son Jesus to save us and in return we only need to keep being faithful and achieve whatever He assigns us. Keep the faith and you will move forward with happiness, rewards and a lot of satisfaction! We are not beggars under Him. In fact we the faithful are accessors and possessors of Kingdom Wealth prepared by God. Also what we gained financially while living in the flesh, we give back to Him through church the 10% of our income. While we enjoy the abundance, we still have the responsibilities of disciplining ourselves with our spending, how we used the rewards the Lord gave us and the challenge of avoiding covetousness. Remember that.

A Look Back at Starman

When it comes to science fiction movies of Hollywood, the 1980s was quite an interesting decade. Released during the decade were these epic sci-fi flicks like The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi and Dune. Not to be outdone were the low-budget sci-fi movies that made an impact on pop culture like The Terminator and E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial.

Screenshot_20190202-185015~2.png

Within the big mix of these kinds of films during the 1980s was Starman which was overlooked.

Released in 1984 to positive reviews (and later an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for Jeff Bridges), Starman was directed by John Carpenter who established himself nicely in Hollywood with 1978’s Halloween. Between Halloween and Starman, Carpenter also directed genre classics Escape from New York and The Thing.

Starman follows an alien creature whose ship (a UFO) was shot down by fighter jets that acted in defense. The alien finds its way into the house of Jenny Hayden (Karen Allen) who is grieving over the sudden death of her husband Scott (Jeff Bridges) watching a personal video of their past and drinking lots of liquor. Inside the house was an album which contained a lock of hair which the alien used to create a clone of Scott instantly from infant to full adult which is the titular Starman (also played by Bridges).

This of course shocks Jenny. She sees her husband return yet it’s not really him. Starman – the alien – clearly is not used to occupying a human body but does his best to communicate with her in English. He also carries with him seven silver spheres that allow him to do special things (specifically manipulating matter) that would appear as miracles to others. Starman wants Jenny to bring him to the Barringer Crater in Arizona within three days in order to be picked up by his fellow aliens. Otherwise he would die.

Screenshot_20190202-185904~2.png

Although frightened and hostile towards him, Jenny still was considerate enough to drive him far away.

If there is anything significant about this movie, it is the sheer depth of character development of both Jenny and Starman. Equally significant is the chemistry between Karen Allen and Jeff Bridges who made their characters believable.

Jeff Bridges is excellent in his portrayal of Starman. He’s clearly an alien who is not only struggling on being in a human body but also struggles to learn about the many ways of life and expression around him on his time on Earth. This includes learning gestures, saying words and doing things that people already find normal to do.

Karen Allen delivered a fine performance as Jenny Hayden. In fact when it comes to character development, I see Jenny a more significant character than her counterpart from outer space. While Starman adapts to life on Earth, Jenny’s character is gradually and convincingly transformed from one who is stuck with the past and being bitter into a person who gets renewed by understanding that life does have more to offer, that hope exists, that miracles do happen and finding new love and inspiration to live on.

As a Born Again Christian who went through personal transformation, who gained renewed faith in the Lord, and who left the old life behind to live on with a new purpose in life, I strongly relate with Jenny’s character development a lot. The concept of renewal and personal transformation portrayed by Karen Allen is much clearer to me than ever. Not to be outdone is the element of the healing of the soul of Jenny as a result of learning and understanding Starman.

The movie also has a solid supporting character in scientist Mark Shermin nicely played by Charles Martin Smith. Shermin is the typical sympathetic and willing-to-understand scientist who strives to discover first-hand an actual living alien which puts him into conflict the National Security Agency’s plan to capture Starman dead or alive. His talk with Starman reminds us viewers that humanity is always flawed and has many times resorted to violence as a means of accomplishment whenever a challenging situation (read: the visit of Starman to Earth by space ship only to be shot down due to fear of being invaded) happens.

With regards to storytelling, Starman is a nice mix of genre elements that goes beyond science fiction. It is also a road movie and a romance. At the same time director John Carpenter told the story with a controlled pace that gives viewers ample time to understand what’s been going on and a decent amount of spectacles that highlight Starman’s miracles.

Speaking of which, the film has elements of Christianity and the miracles of Starman are just the start of it. I could emphasize further here what the other elements are but that would mean spoiling the story and that is something I won’t do. You just will have to watch the movie to realize it.

Is Starman a wonderful movie? Absolutely! Is it one of the best works of John Carpenter? Truly it is and it deserves any moviegoer’s attention. How does it compare with other friendly alien movies like E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial and Close Encounters of the Third Kind? Compared to those two flicks, Starman has the best and most mature character development of its protagonists. Its dramatic performances are also better.

Starman is a true sci-fi classic that deserves your attention even if you are not fond of sci-fi or UFO movies. I highly recommend buying this movie on Blu-ray disc or by streaming it.

Resident Evil 2 remake demo observations

IMG_20190112_215241~2.jpg

I recently played the 6-gigabyte demo of the Resident Evil 2 remake on my Xbox One downloaded via Xbox LIVE. It was a one-shot demo limited to only thirty minutes of play time.

So how was my experience? I focused mainly on exploration of the Raccoon City Police Station and orienting myself with the game’s controls (and the 3rd-person view on exploration and shooting).

Having played RE2 on PlayStation way back in 1998, I found it stunning that the in-game environment rendered in full 3D polygons the look of the police station from the old game. Of course, not everything is 100% replicated. There are noticeable changes like re-arrangements of the certain furniture, items and even parts of the layout of the interiors. Clear to say, if you are a very avid RE2 gamer who pretty much memorized the placings of items in the 1998 video game, do not expect to find them the same in the 2019 remake.

Regarding controls, in my view RE2 feels very similar to that of Resident Evil 6 which was the last RE game I played. The 3rd-person view approach on movement and shooting are there. That being said, I find RE2’s shooting-and-moving mechanism inferior to that of Gears of War games with regards to response and precision. Not necessarily a bad thing and I do understand that the lack of response and precision is meant to enhance the claustrophobic feel for gamers. Resident Evil 2, after all, is Capcom’s attempt to revive survival horror seriously.

More on shooting, there is a balance between precision, impact and movement. There I was as Leon aiming at an approaching zombie while slowly walking backwards (to keep a distance). I took a shot at the zombie’s head while moving, the shot did not affect him. When I stopped moving, aiming became more precise (I noticed the on-screen target mark adjusting) and my shots hit the zombie better on the head and body.

Speaking of zombies, they are slow moving but are noticeably faster compared to their 1998 counterparts. Once near you, a zombie can take a sudden move forward to grab and bite you.

What I found intriguing is that when I was caught between two zombies, they both grabbed me and attacked me at the same time causing further damage to Leon’s health. I wonder what would happen if, let’s say, Leon got caught between two Lickers in a similar situation.

On exploration, the move into the dark portions of the police station using only a flashlight to see ahead is a nice touch. I ended up moving cautiously as I explored the rooms and other things to search for useful items like a key, first aid spray, etc.

And then there is the discovery about what happened to the police station. One police officer I tried to save died losing half his body as zombies from the other room grabbed him. Then there is another police officer who helped Leon survive from suffering the same death.

Because I focused more on exploration and getting used to the controls, my 30 minutes ran out without reaching the end.

So how do I feel after playing the one-shot demo? Personally I am not keen on buying Resident Evil 2’s release on January 25. I will observe first how the game will perform critically with the game review writers, the bloggers and of course the feedback of the many gamers who play it.

I do remember the overall feel of Resident Evil 2 on PlayStation in 1998. The first part was all about orientation, exploring the police station and finding out how Raccoon City got overwhelmed with zombies caused by the deadly, artificially made virus. Then as the game progressed, locations changed and more characters entered the plot, the pace quickened, the action became more intense and there was that sense of adventure as well. It remains to be seen if such things will happen in the overall narrative of the RE2 remake.

Why I Love The Song Happy Day

happyday

I really love listening to the song Happy Day which has the holiness of our Eternal Savior Jesus Christ in its lyrics.

As a Born Again Christian living in Alabang, Muntinlupa City, I regularly attend Sunday family worship with the Joseph Kack Ministries International (JKMI) community at the World Prayer Center (WPC) in BF Homes, Paranaque City. Ever since I became Born Again saved by my dearest friend under the guidance of the Lord, I felt the Holy Spirit return into my life. Specifically Jesus Christ occupies and lives in my heart. In fact, I felt the presence of the Holy Spirit a lot more as a Born Again than compared to the last 22 years and 11 months of my old life as a Catholic (including the 9 years I stopped believing in the Lord).

Listening to the holiness and beauty of the song Happy Day adds a lot of depth to my worship of the Lord as a Born Again.

I remember attending Sunday worship service at WPC on June 24, 2018 with the JKMI spiritual family and that particular service had holy communion prepared for us. Happy Day was one of the early songs played with a fast-paced Christian rock by the church’s very talented musicians creating a whole lot of energy for all of us. As the music rocked and energized me, I paid close attention to the lyrics displayed and instantly those lyrics brought back memories of my becoming Born Again and becoming a saved soul now part of the Kingdom of Light under God.

Some time later during the service, holy communion was served and a slightly slower but more sentimental version of Happy Day was played. As I stood in line for holy communion, I listened to the song and it brought me into tears because the song’s holiness from the Lord touched me deeply as I recalled my becoming Born Again (moving from the dark age of my life – started April 7, 1995 – into the Kingdom of Light – happened on March 4, 2018 – becoming Born Again).

During the July 29, 2018 Sunday worship service at our church, Happy Day was played again and this time it was played thrice. The first was upbeat Christian rock, the next was slower and sentimental, and the final time was instrumental. Like what happened on June 24, I was moved into tears by Happy Day during the holy communion rite.

I should mention that JKMI’s musicians did a GREAT job playing Happy Day. They should be praised! Their great talent is no surprise as they were very blessed by the Lord!

There truly is a lot of holiness in the lyrics of Happy Day. Let’s take a look at this portion of the lyrics.

The greatest day in history
Death is beaten, You have rescued me
Sing it out, Jesus is alive

That early segment of the lyrics made clear its expression about the saving of souls performed by Jesus Christ and His followers. God created all humans and because the world we live in is so chaotic, a lot of people lose direction in their lives and many also end up being spiritually lost to the point that they lost their focus on God and His Son Jesus. Living in the flesh is indeed a hard struggle but for as long as we strongly honor, praise, serve and follow God, we can make it into His Kingdom. Jesus Christ is present even though we mortals cannot see Him. Jesus is with us, He lives in our hearts, He always guiding us and always keeps on caring for us. It is very true that Jesus is indeed alive.

Oh, happy day, happy day
You washed my sin away
Oh, happy day, happy day
I’ll never be the same
Forever I am changed

This is chorus of the song. I very strongly relate with it as a Born Again. My old life as a Catholic was difficult, painful, disorienting and lacked the presence of the Holy Spirit. I really felt like a prisoner as my old life had these restrictions connected with many Catholic rites and being pushed to follow the figures of the Catholic hierarchy (including joining the wrong groups of people) hindered me from truly connecting with the Lord. I grew frustrated and got lost. Speaking of the word change in the lyrics, becoming Born Again is the single greatest form of change to ever happen in my life and I ever since I’ve been making moves to improving myself and no less than my mother noticed this. In fact my mother accepted me being Born Again and she thanked God for my conversion. I should also mention I reconciled with my mother on the day (March 31, 2018) I revealed to her and my father that I became Born Again.

Going back to the lyrics, the words “I’ll never be the same.” and “Forever I am changed.” strongly resonates with me. I became Born Again on March 4, 2018 (I made a decision some days prior to that happy day) and that was truly a very happy day for me as my faith in God and Jesus was not only restored but also greatly reinvigorated. I found a new purpose in my life that same day. Truly a day I will never ever forget and definitely I’ll never be the same.

Oh, what a glorious day
What a glorious way
That You have saved me
And oh, what a glorious day
What a glorious name
Jesus!

That part of the lyrics is truly powerful. So powerful it is deeply moving and can move anyone into tears. Let us remember that Jesus Christ died on the cross to save all of humanity from sin. Lost souls that end up being saved (and permanently changed) to enter the Kingdom of Light is clearly in accordance to Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice in saving humanity. It takes faith and personal renewal to believe in God and His son Jesus. Jesus’ saving of lost souls is undeniably glorious and His love for us cannot be denied.

In return, we dedicate ourselves in honoring, following and serving the Lord. What lies ahead in the Kingdom of Light are peace, love, tranquility and Kingdom Wealth.

Before I became Born Again, I was a frustrated Catholic who drifted away from the Lord in 2009. My dearest friend, who has long been Born Again, saved my soul under the guidance of the Lord. Afterwards my faith in God and Jesus got restored and reinvigorated and I became Born Again ever since. Jesus (through my dearest friend) saved me in a glorious way (Jesus living in my heart) on a glorious day! Let me state that I made the decision to be Born Again which completed the process of being saved.

Whenever I listen to Happy Day, I don’t think of amusement at all. I think of the Lord and how He saved me through His instrument (my dearest friend) and changed me forever. Happy Day also reminds me of the blessings God made for us all. On July 1 as I was driving fast along the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) coming from Subic Bay going home to Metro Manila, I listened to Happy Day on my smartphone with auto-replay set.

There was a segment of the fast drive in which a beautiful, scenic view of the land and the mountain on my left appeared as Happy Day played on. That moment easily reminded me of God’s creations and blessings for humanity.

In closing this article, I posted below the lyrics of Happy Day plus a few YouTube videos of the song in Christian Rock and in slower, sentimental performance (at an American church). I love Happy Day and you will if you believe in God and His son Jesus. For deep inspiration, read John 3: 3 in the Holy Bible. Open your heart to the Lord!

Happy Day

The greatest day in history
Death is beaten, You have rescued me
Sing it out, Jesus is alive
The empty cross, the empty grave
Life eternal, You have won the day
Shout it out, Jesus is alive
He’s alive

Oh, happy day, happy day
You washed my sin away
Oh, happy day, happy day
I’ll never be the same
Forever I am changed

When I stand in that place
Free at last, meeting face to face
I am yours, Jesus, You are mine
Endless joy, perfect peace
Earthly pain finally will cease
Celebrate, Jesus is alive
He’s alive

And oh, happy day, happy day
You washed my sin away
Oh, happy day, happy day
I’ll never be the same
Oh no, forever I am changed

Oh, what a glorious day
What a glorious way
That You have saved me
And oh, what a glorious day
What a glorious name
Jesus

Hey, and oh, happy day, happy day
You washed my sin away
Oh, happy day, happy day
I’ll never be the same
Oh no, forever I am changed
What a glorious, glorious day
I’ll never be the same
