National triathlete Kim Mangrobang an awardee of the Women in Sports Awards, event scheduled for March 20, 2024

Elite triathlete and back-to-back Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) medalist Kim Mangrobang has officially been confirmed by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) as an awardee of the Women in Sports Awards which will happen on March 20, 2024 at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila.

In a March 8, 2024 official letter addressed to Mangrobang, PSC Commissioner Olivia “Bong” Coo wrote:

It is with immense pleasure and that we extend our warmest congratulations to You.

You have been distinguished as an awardee at the upcoming Women in Sports Awards, scheduled for 20 March 2024, at the prestigious Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila.

This distinguished event, the first of its kind in our nation, serves to recognize exemplary women athletes who have demonstrated outstanding prowess or given significant contributions into their respective fields in sports.

The Women in Sports Awards aim to highlight the extraordinary accomplishments of female athletes, offering them the recognition they truly deserve. This accolade not only celebrates their successes but also aims to inspire future generations of athletes to pursue excellence and foster a robust culture of sportsmanship and vitality within our community.

For the newcomers reading this, Kim Mangrobang (full name: Marion Kim Mangrobang) is one of the finest triathletes of the Philippines. She won several gold medals for the country in the SEA Games over the past years, including victories in the sport of duathlon (run-bike-run). In addition, during the ceremony, City Vice Mayor April Aguilar was awarded for Las Piñas City’s substantial support to environmental sustainability initiatives by Engineer Cezar Perillo, head of the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO). The award, presented during the “Greenership: Nurturing Partnerships for a Sustainable and Greener Future” forum on February 20, 2024, acknowledges the city’s efforts in backing the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) National Capital Region’s projects.

The award underscores the city’s active engagement in promoting environmental stewardship and its commitment to sustainable urban development. Las Piñas has been instrumental in driving forward initiatives aimed at urban greening, waste management, and reducing pollution, demonstrating leadership in environmental conservation and a proactive approach to tackling ecological challenges.

Philippine Tourism Awards (PTA) revived

In what is clearly another effort to emphasize tourism in the Philippines and encourage stakeholders to be more active, the national government announced the revival of the Philippine Tourism Awards (PTA) which will recognize achievements and achievers in tourism, according to a Philippine News Agency (PNA) news article.

The national government is set to recognize the country’s outstanding travel stakeholders through the revival of the Philippine Tourism Awards (PTA) this year.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) launched the 2024 PTA, which is envisioned to become the “highest and most prestigious citation” in the Philippine tourism sector.

Tourism Secretary Frasco said the PTA will recognize hotels, resorts, destinations, local government units, tourism front-liners, homestays, MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) venues, and other tourism stakeholders who continue to promote sustainable travel and the Filipino brand of service excellence, among others.

“It is important for us to give these awards and recognition because it encourages the continuous increase in quality of tourism services. It fosters excellence in ensuring the services to our tourists as well as encourages healthy competition among our destinations,” she said in an interview during the PTA launch at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay on Friday.

The inaugural PTA will have two major categories this year: the Philippine Tourism Pillar Awards and the Philippine Tourism Industry Awards.

The Philippine Tourism Pillars Awards will be accorded to pioneers and institutions who have made noteworthy contributions to the rise of tourism in the country.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Tourism Industry Awards will be a periodic national recognition program for both the private and public sectors involved in the development and promotion of Philippine tourism.

The application details for both recognitions may be accessed at https://beta.tourism.gov.ph/philippine-tourism-awards-3/.

Application for the Tourism Pillars Awards is until March 8 while submission for the Tourism Industry Awards will be accepted until March 30.

Application is free of charge, the DOT said.

Philippines wins big at the 2024 ASEAN Tourism Awards thanks to three cities and many stakeholders

In the 2024 edition of the ASEAN Tourism Awards held recently in Laos, the Philippines won big as three cities and more than twenty stakeholders won honors, according to a Philippine News Agency (PNA) news article.

Three cities and 21 tourism stakeholders from the Philippines have been recognized during the 2024 ASEAN Tourism Standard Awards in Vientiane, Laos.

The awarding ceremony was one of the activities in the ASEAN Tourism Forum 2024 which ran from Jan. 22 to 27, the Department of Tourism (DOT) said in a news release on Wednesday.

The cities of Baguio in Benguet, Ilagan in Isabela, and Tabuk in Kalinga were awarded as the ASEAN Clean Tourist City, the Department of Tourism

According to ASEAN Tourism Standards, these are the areas where the flow of visitors and where cultural, natural and/or man-made attractions exist.

Prime Properties Pearl Farm Beach Resort, Club Paradise Palawan, Bohol Beach Club, Seda Nuvali, and The Forest Lodge at Camp John Hay won the ASEAN Green Hotel Award.

This citation is given to hotel industry players whose operations are based on the achievement of sustainable tourism through environment-friendly principles, human resource development, resource consumption reduction, and local community involvement.

About 15 Philippine venues were given the ASEAN Meeting, Incentive, Convention, Exhibition (MICE) Venue Awards granted to physical spaces with quality facilities and impressive services, designed and provided for MICE activities with purposes for meetings, exhibitions, and events.

The major criteria for the awards encompass the standards of physical aspects, venue management, and people working within venues that competitively meet the requirements of MICE travelers. It is divided into three categories: room, exhibition venue, and event venue category.

Properties Bai Hotel Cebu, Clark Marriott Hotel, Hilton Clark Sun Valley Resort, Princesa Garden Island Resort & Spa, Seda Hotel Nuvali won the meeting room category; World Trade Center Metro Manila (Manila Exposition Complex), SMX Convention Center Manila, Cordillera Convention Hall by Baguio Country Club, Isabela Convention Center (ICON), and Iloilo Convention Center won the exhibition hall category; and Palacio del Sur by Marcian Group, Jpark Island Resort & Waterpark Cebu, Infinity Garden by Baguio Country Club, CAP-John Hay Trade and Cultural Center, Princesa Garden Island Resort and Spa by Modern Asia, Inc. were named as the winners for the event venue category.

Meantime, Palawan-based property Daluyon Beach and Mountain Resort was named as a lead partner for “Enchanting Gastronomical Sabang Delights, Beach Forest and Caves” under the ASEAN Sustainable Tourism Awards.

Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco said the winners made not only significant revenue contributions but also employed millions of Filipinos.

“These achievements reflect not only the excellence and dedication that you have put in with the development of tourism but also contribute significantly to the overall advancement and sustainability of the ASEAN tourism industry,” she said.

A total of 192 ASEAN Tourism Standards Awards were given to the member countries.

Cebu-based SEA Games medalists Remolino and Alcoseba win Sprint Elite titles of the 2024 National Age Group Triathlon Subic Bay Freeport race

The Cebu-based Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) medalists Andrew Kim Remolino and Raven Fatih Alcoseba outclassed their rivals to win the Sprint Elite titles during the Subic Bay Freeport Zone leg of the 2024 National Age Group Triathlon (NAGT) series which was held at the Boardwalk area.

Remolino, who won a silver medal during the 2022 Vietnam SEA Games, won the 750 meter swim – 20 kilometer bike – 5 kilometer run contest in 56 minutes and 56 seconds followed by fellow Cebuano Matthew Justine Hermosa, (56:57) and Joshua Ramos of Baguio Benguet Triathlon (57:31).

“I had a good preparation for this tournament, so I am happy with my performance,” said the 23-year-old Remolino, who placed third behind Fil-Spanish Fernando Casares and Hermosa last year.

Despite his runner-up finish again, Hermosa managed to improve his 57:34 performance last year.

“I’m glad that I was able to set a personal best time. It’s a very close race and I know that Kim is my biggest challenge,” said the 5-foot-11 Hermosa, who together with Kira Ellis, Erika Nicole Burgos and Iñaki Lorbes, won the relay gold medal in aquathlon (500m swim and 2.5km run) at the 2023 Cambodia SEA Games.

Hermosa, Dayshaun Ramos, Sam Corpuz and Kira Ellis also attended a 26-day training camp at the Rio Maior Sports Center in Portugal last year.

Alcoseba, a 2022 SEA Games medalist, clocked 1:03:55 to secure her third straight women’s title in the tournament organized by Triathlon Philippines headed by Ramon Marchan in cooperation with the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA).

Erika Nicole Burgos submitted 1:05:39 to capture the silver medal while Kira Ellis took the bronze medal in 1:06:16.

”I tried to keep a positive attitude throughout the race. I’m happy to win again,” said the 21-year-old Alcoseba, a 3rd year civil engineering student at the De La Salle University.

Meanwhile, Dayshaun Ramos clocked 58 minutes and 44 seconds to pocket the gold medal in the men’s junior elite category. Darell Johnson Bada got the silver medal in 1:00:11 and Juan Miguel Tayag secured the bronze medal in 1:01:14.

Singaporean Janelle Susatra (1:07:17) won the women’s title over Erin Denise Burgos (1:16:33) and Adrian Ungos (1:19:53).

The winners in the standard distance age group were as follows: (Men’s 18-24) – George Vincent Alcido of Baguio Benguet Triathlon (2:16:30), Mark Joshua Perez of Gas Coaching (2:17:35) and Derek Jacob Villa of CM Riptide (2:32:52); (Men’s 25-29) – Edward Macalalad of Royal MNL/UPLB Tranrados (2:05:39), Jigo Libiran of The Usuals (2:33:37) and Carlos Daniel Dungao of Triclark Volvo Triathlon Team (2:36:43); (Men’s 30-34) – Reynante Briones of TRISNDBARRACUDA (2:33:55), Juan Gabriel Peña of Subic Bay Multisports (2:34:26) and Tristan Santos (2:34:59); (Men’s 35-39) – Benjamin Ramirez (2:27:40), Arnold Hoyo-A of Tri Vatan/BRC (2:35:21) and Iggy Hizon of Baguio Benguet Triathlon (2:47:41);

The podium finishers in the women’s division were as follows: (18-34) – Shamira Habie of Tri-Generals (3:04:49) and Daryl Mooney of Team Mooney (3:28:45); (35-49) – Maryfel Aumentado of Cheryauto PH Tri Team (2:48:42) and Kristine Mae Tan of The Next Step Tri (3:10:00); and (50 and over) – Ivy Mendoza of Poveda Tri Team (3:19:55) and Ratna Dimaporo of Tri SND Barracuda (3:25:10).

The NAGT, organized by Triathlon Philippines headed by Ramon Marchan in cooperation with the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA), was supported by the Philippine Sports Commission, Asian Center for Insulation, Standard Insurance and Gatorade, the official drink.

Muntinlupa City’s residents and achievements highlighted during 106th founding anniversary celebration

Recently in the City of Muntinlupa, the outstanding residents and the achievements of the city were highlighted by Mayor Ruffy Biazon during the celebration of the city’s 106th founding anniversary, according to a Manila Bulletin news report.

Mayor Ruffy Biazon paid tribute to outstanding residents, including most valuable player in basketball Karl Kevin Argana Quiambao, and cited the gains of the city government this year as Muntinlupa celebrated its 106th founding anniversary on Dec. 19.

“Today, we stand on the shoulders of those who came before us, proud inheritors of a legacy that stretches back over a century. In fact, it has been 38,690 days since Muntinlupa was established as an independent municipality by the stroke of a pen by an American Governor-General of the Philippines,” said Biazon in his address at the anniversary celebration.

It was on Dec. 19, 2017 when Governor-General Francis Burton Harrison signed Executive Order No. 108 that made Muntinlupa a municipality.

“Muntinlupa remains a beacon of strength and resilience. Our city has weathered storms, both literal and metaphorical, and emerged stronger each time. As we reflect on the past year, let us not only acknowledge the challenges we faced but also celebrate the victories, both big and small, that have shaped our community,” said Biazon.

Awards – Biazon cited the different awards the Muntinlupa City government received this year.

One of them was the Seal of Good Local Governance (SGLG), which, he said, meant that the city government has been delivering excellent services to the public.

Muntinlupa also received eight awards at the Urban Governance Exemplar Awards of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).

In city competitiveness, said Biazon, Muntinlupa garnered third place in resiliency and infrastructure pillars and fifth place overall most competitive local government unit among highly urbanized cities in the country.

Muntinlupa also received the Green Banner Seal of Compliance Award, “the highest recognition given to LGUs for its sustainable intervention programs to combat and completely eradicate malnutrition especially among children.”

“Each individual department and office of the City Government also has its own share of victories and triumphs. In the past year alone, we have welcomed and hosted several fellow local governments (cities and municipalities) both from Metro Manila and the provinces which conducted benchmarking activities and learning visits in the City,” said Biazon.

Outstanding residents – Biazon named residents who stood out in their respective fields this year.

One of them is tricycle driver Dexter Pacquiao from Barangay Cupang who returned P413,000 in cash that was left by an overseas Filipino worker (OFW).

Quiambao, a resident of Barangay Bayanan, was also hailed by the mayor for being the MVP in basketball in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 86.

Biazon also mentioned athletes who won medals for the country in different sports events including the 19th Asian Games.

Among them were Asian Games gold medalist Annie Ramirez of Barangay Cupang who won the feat in the Jiu-Jitsu Women’s 57KG category, and bronze medalist Kaila Napolis of Barangay Poblacion who bagged the award in the Jiu-Jitsu Women’s 52KG category.

He also cited brothers Shugen at Keisei Nakano who won silver and bronze medals, respectively, in judo in the 32nd SEA Games, and Daryl Mercado who won a bronze medal in the same sport.

The mayor also mentioned three students of Colegio de Muntinlupa who competed in the 2023 Vex Robotics World Championship. They were Arthur Simundac, Kenneth De Guzman, and Mark Lawrence Ragus.

“It has been 437 days since I assumed the post of Mayor of Muntinlupa City. It is not just the leaders who make reform and progress happen..it is often the hard work of those on the ground,” said Biazon.

He added, “We are here now celebrating this significant day because of all the men and women who showed up, who fought hard, whose battles were marred by defeat and victory, but showed up nonetheless in the arena.”

The Muntinlupa City government honored a board exam topnotcher and recipients of Latin honors recently.

This was through the city’s Muntinlupa Scholarship Division (MSD), which recognized 33 individuals who achieved impressive results.

Mayor Ruffy Biazon congratulated the honorees and lauded them for being an example to younger students.

One of them was Maureen Grace Usacdin who finished on top of the Real Estate Appraisers Licensure Examination last September. She received a cash incentive of P100,000 for her achievement.

The MSD also recognized 10 cum laude, 21 magna cum laude and one summa cum laude from different institutions in the city.

Each received a medal, certificate and cash incentives amounting to P30,000 for summa cum laude, P20,000 for magna cum laude, and P10,000 for cum laude.

Athletes and aspiring engineers from the City of Muntinlupa showed excellence again in various fields and contests, from the national civil engineers’ board exam to the University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and competitions in the Asian level.

Mayor Ruffy Biazon congratulated the athletes and students for excelling in their various fields, saying “It is our hope that your success will continue to inspire and bring honor to our city.“

Among these achievements, the Colegio de Muntinlupa (CDM) logged a 75 percent passing rate in the recent Civil Engineer Licensure Examination by the Philippine Regulatory Commission (PRC), almost twice the national average passing rate of 33 percent.

Flix Mowry Cambahe, Kathleen De Guzman, Via Cris Echavez, Francisco Tan, Ericka Valdisimo, and Christian John Yabillo are the newly minted civil engineers from CDM.

In addition, the city has the honor of producing the latest UAAP Most Valuable Player, Karl Kevin Argana Quiambao of De La Salle University, who hails from Barangay Bayanan.

The city also recently added to its stable of elite athletes Aidanreed Mercado and Sophia Kyra Capistrano who captured gold in the Sprint Men Junior Elite and silver in the Junior Elite Women Category, respectively, in the recent 2023 Asia Triathlon Duathlon Championship.

Mayor Imelda Aguilar and Vice-Mayor April Aguilar led the awarding of the “Las Piñas City Local Governance Exemplar Award (LPCLGEA)” on Monday, Nov. 20, during the regular flag-raising ceremony held at the Las Piñas City Hall quadrangle.

Aguilar said the LPCLGEA was created with the aim of establishing a mechanism for identifying, selecting, and providing rewards and incentives to deserving offices, officials, and employees and identifying outstanding accomplishments of offices and employees in upholding the principles of knowledge management, convergence, and multi-stakeholder partnership for the implementation of the programs, projects, activities, and initiatives of the city government.

She also said the LPCLGEA also aims to institutionalize reward and recognition periodically or as the need arises, which also provides incentives and interventions to motivate employees who have contributed ideas, suggestions, excellent accomplishments, significant career milestones, and personal development efforts.

The mayor said the awarding was witnessed by Atty. Odilon L. Pasaraba, Undersecretary for Project Development Management of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG); Atty. Ana Lyn R. Baltazar-Cortez, DILG Assistant Regional Director-National Capital Region; Mary Anne B. Planas, City Director- DILG Las Piñas; Brig. Gen. Mark Danglait Pespes, Southern Police District (SPD) director; and Las Piñas City police chief Col. Jaime O. Santos.

Aguilar said the awards and recognition program consists of two categories — the city-level awards and the barangay-level awards.

She said that under the category of City Level Awards, there are: High Functionality on the Las Pinas City Peace and Order Council (LPCPOC); Safest City in Southern Metro Manila; High Functionality on the Las Pinas City Anti-Drug Abuse Council (LPCADAC); Ideal Function for both the Local Council for Protection of Children (LCPC) and the Local Committee on Anti-Trafficking and Violence Against Women and Children (LCAT-VAWC); Functional Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP); and Functional Fisheries Compliance Audit.

The mayor added that also included under the City Level Awards are the Regional Recognition on Manila Bay Clean-Up, Rehabilitation, and Preservation (MBCRP) Program; Regional Recognition on Halina’s Magtanim ng Prutas at Gulay (HAPAG)-Kalinga Program; City Nutrition Awards; Best Garden Award; and the Seal of 4Ps-Grand Winner Pantawid Farmers ng Talon Kuatro-Livelihood Association.

For the Barangay Level category, the Safe Barangay, Drug Cleared Barangays, Best Barangay Nutrition Scholars, Seal of Good Local Governance for Barangays (SGLGB), and the Outstanding Lupong Tagapamayapa of the City of Las Piñas awards were given out.

Vice Mayor Aguilar thanked all the awardees for their unwavering commitment and innovative contributions to the city.
