Las Piñas City honors more local athletes who won overseas

Las Piñas City Mayor Imelda Aguilar warmly welcomed three athletes who won medals in international competitions, making the city proud.

The athletes met the mayor in separate courtesy visits last July 13 and 14.

Aguilar commended Jeon Bardley dela Cruz, a five-year-old Jiu Jitsu athlete who won silver medals at the Asian Sport Jiu Jitsu Federation (ASJJF) Philippine International Jiu Jitsu Open and the Abu Dhabi Pro (AJP).

She said despite Dela Cruz’s young age, he displayed immense skills and determination in sports, serving as an inspiration to aspiring athletes.

Cash incentives for 32nd SEA Games and 12th ASEAN Para Games medalists to be awarded on July 20

Members of the Philippine Team who won medals in the 32^nd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) and the 12 ASEAN Para Games (APG) will be awarded with the promised cash incentives by the national government on July 20, 2023, at Malacañang Palace, according to a Philippine News Agency (PNA) news article. The cash incentives will be released in accordance to Republic Act Number 10699 and President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr., himself will be in attendance.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. will present cash incentives to the medalists of the 32nd Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) and 12th ASEAN Para Games (APG) in a ceremony scheduled on July 20 at the Malacañan Palace.

“We are grateful for President Marcos’ decision to personally award the incentives to Team Philippines, an expression of his admiration to our national athletes and their unwavering passion and dedication for representing the country,” Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman Richard Bachmann said in a statement on Monday.

The government cash incentives amounting to PHP74 million, including PHP14 million for Para Games medalists, is in accordance to Republic Act 10699, or the Expanded National Athletes and Coaches Incentives and Benefits Act.

Medalists in the SEAG will get PHP300,000 for gold winner, PHP150,000 (silver) and PHP60,000 (bronze), while for the ASEAN Para Games winners, the incentives are PHP150,000 (gold), PHP75,000 (silver) and PHP30,000 (bronze).

The cash bonuses will come from the monthly remittances of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) through the PSC’s National Sports Development Fund (NSDF).

“In the past, the PSC conducted two separate awarding for SEAG and APG medalists, but I believe it is more fitting to join the two for the President’s first-ever incentives awarding during his administration,” Bachmann said.

Bachmann will be joined by PSC Commissioners Matthew “Fritz” Gaston, Edward Hayco, Walter Francis Torres and Olivia “Bong” Coo during the awarding ceremony.

Also invited to the ceremony are Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, Senate Committee on Sports Chairman Sen. Bong Go, House Committee on Youth and Sports Chairman Rep. Faustino Dy III, Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Mayor Abraham Tolentino, and other sports executives and officials.

The Philippines won 58 golds, 85 silvers and 117 bronzes in the SEA Games to surpass its 52-70-105 haul in Vietnam last year, but remained fifth overall.

World champion Carlos Edriel Yulo bagged two gold and two silver medals for the gymnastics team, which also won two bronze medals.

In the ASEAN Para Games, the country collected 34 gold, 33 silver and 50 bronze medals to duplicate its fifth-place finish last year in Indonesia.

Muntinlupa City raises cash incentives for local athletes who are able to win in local and international sports events

Recently in the progressive City of Muntinlupa, the City Government officially raised the cash incentives for its local athletes who are able to win medals in varied local and international competitions, according to a Manila Bulletin news report.

The Muntinlupa City government increased the cash incentives to athletes winning in international and local competitions including the Olympics, and Asian and SEA Games.

Mayor Ruffy Biazon signed Ordinance 2023-091, passed by the Muntinlupa City Council, giving incentives and rewards to athletes bagging gold, silver and bronze medals in international, national, regional and local competitions.

The ordinance covers athletes and coaches representing Muntinlupa who win in contests sanctioned by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), International Olympic Committee (IOC), National Association (NSA) and the city government.

It also applies to athletes and coaches who are residents of Muntinlupa and are part of the sports development program of the city, and winning athletes who represent the country who have lived in Muntinlupa for at least a year.

“Our city is definitely proud of Muntinlupeños excelling in sports. It is but fitting that we reward their hard work and support their continuous pursuit of excellence,” said Biazon.

The new local law amended Ordinance 18-299 approved in 2018, which gave cash incentives to winning athletes and their coaches.

Under the new ordinance, Olympians winning gold, silver and bronze medals will get P750,000, P500,000 and P250,000, respectively.

With the 32^nd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) aquathlon gold medal won by the Philippines in Cambodia now in the record books, the multisport event of aquathlon has gained importance and recognition among multisport athletes in the nation. That being said, those who want to engage in aquathlon competition can do so by joining the National Age Group Aquathlon 2023 which is set to happen on October 15 at the Ayala Vermosa Sports Hub in Imus, Cavite. Online registration is ongoing (note: RaceYa.fit account is needed).

Muntinlupa Mayor establishes sports and recreational facilities division

Recently in the progressive City of Muntinlupa, Mayor Ruffy Biazon issued an executive order establishing a local division to manage the local sports and recreational facilities, according to a Manila Bulletin news report. Muntinlupa Mayor Ruffy Biazon issued an executive order creating a special body that will oversee sports and recreational facilities in the city.

Biazon signed Executive Order No. 20 establishing the Sports and Recreations Management Division (SRMD) that is also tasked to market the facilities as venues for local and international competitions.

“(Having the SRMD) we expect our sports facilities to be well-taken care of and maximized to their fullest potential as we now have a dedicated office to oversee their daily operations,” said Biazon.

The SRMD was established to operate and maintain the city’s sports facilities, including the Muntinlupa Sports Center, Aquatic Center, Track and Field Oval, as well as covered courts, parks, and playgrounds.

The Muntinlupa Aquatic Center recently hosted the “United We Swim” Anniversary Swim Meet of the Swim League Philippines with about 600 participating swimmers from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

Biazon appointed Joshua Robert Cosare, a member of the Sports Management Council of the Philippines, as head of the SRMD. Cosare is a graduate of BA Sports and Recreational Management and has over 10 years of experience in the field.

Philippines achieves Top 10 finishes across contests of the 2023 Asia Triathlon U23 and Junior Championships in Japan; Philippine officials elected successfully at Asia Triathlon Congress

Welcome back my readers and sports fans! The past weekend at Gamagori, Japan, Philippine triathletes managed to land in the Top 10 categories in all four contests of 2023 Asia Triathlon U23 and Junior Championships. Take note that the U23 and Junior races all had 750 M swim – 20 Km bike – 5 Km run courses.

In the U23 Men event, Cebu-based Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) medalist Andrew Kim Remolino finished 7^th place overall with an official time of 59 minutes and 27 seconds. In the U23 Women’s contest, Raven Faith Alcoseba of Cebu Province clocked 1:06:02 finishing 9^th place.

Among the Juniors, SEA Games medalist Matthew Justine Hermosa finished 7^th among the Men with 1:01:51 while in the women’s race, the Philippines had two Top 10 finishers thanks to SEA Games medalist Kira Ellis (1:09:14) and her teammate Samantha Corpuz (1:09:31) ranking 6^th and 8^th place respectively.

Other Filipino triathletes who finished were as follows: U23 Men – Joshua Ramos 1:02:21 at 26^th place, Iñaki Lorbes 1:02:39 at 28^th place, and Juan Baniqued 1:06:21 at 34^th place. U23 Women – Erika Burgos 1:10:01 at 22^nd place. Junior Men – Dayshaun Ramos 1:05:43 at 19^th place. Junior Women – Gene Quiambao 1:10:22 at 11^th place.

The Philippine Team’s campaign at the 2023 Asia Triathlon U23 and Junior Championships in Japan is supported by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC). The Philippine team will be competing in more events overseas.

Philippines wins gold and silver medals across varied categories at the Powerman Malaysia 2023 Duathlon

The Philippines achieved victories in specific categories during the recent Powerman Malaysia 2023 Duathlon according to a Manila Bulletin sports news report reflecting the official race results published. The Filipino duathlete who won the silver medal in the Elite Men’s race was John Chicano who previously won medals in the Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games).

Merry Joy Trupa and John Chicano became the best performing Filipino athletes in the elite division of the recent Powerman Malaysia 2023 Duathlon race after clinching the gold and silver medals, respectively, held in Putrajaya.

Trupa ruled the women’s elite by a hairline by clocking 3 hours, 13 minutes and 34 seconds, beating teammate Rhia Stawicki (3:13:35) by one second. Yon Man Yun crossed the finish line six minutes later to grab the bronze in 3:19:16.

Reigning Southeast Asian Games champion Chicano, for his part, continued his strong showing in international tournaments with a silver-medal finish in the men’s side, timing 2:44:00 to settle behind eventual gold medalist Malo Moysan of France.

Moysan, a French Grand Prix and Spain Open Duathlon titlist, lived up to his billing and timed 2:40:45 for the gold medal.

Moysan and Chicano were head-to-head in the first run leg with the Filipino trailing only by mere seconds before the French duathlete gained a comfortable four-minute lead in the bike leg and never slowed down.

It was a 2-3 finish for Team PH after Maynard Pecson clinched the bronze with 2:49:17.

Meanwhile, other Filipino podium finishers include Jena Valdez, who won the gold in short distance female (15-17), and silver winners Aidanreed Mercado (short male 18-29) and Sophia Capistrano (short female 18-39).

Philippine triathletes all set for the 2023 Asia Triathlon U23 and Junior Championships in Japan

Eleven members of the Philippine triathlon team will be competing in the 2023 Asia Triathlon U23 and Junior Championships in Gamagori, Japan in a few days from now, according to a sports news release published by the Philippine News Agency (PNA). Among the members are those who won medals in the recent Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games).

The Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP) will send 11 athletes to Japan for the 2023 Asia Triathlon U23 and Junior Championships that will be held in Gamagori on June 22 to 26.

The event distance in the U23/Junior (Sprint) will be 750m (swim), 20km (bike), and 5km (run) while in the U23/Junior Mixed Relay (Super Sprint), it will be 280m (swim), 7.2km (bike), and 2km (run).

Cebu City’s Andrew Kim Remolino and Faith Raven Alcoseba, Iñaki Emil Lorbes, Juan Francisco Baniqued, and Joshua Alexander Ramos will compete in the U-23 division while Erika Nicole Burgos, Gene Heart Quiambao, Kira Ellis, Lady Samantha Jhunace Corpuz, Dayshaun Karl Ramos, and Matthew Justine Hermosa, who is also from Cebu, are entered in the Junior division.

The athletes will be accompanied by coaches Ani de Leon-Brown, Louann Ramos, and Cebuano Roland Remolino, as well as TRAP secretary general Ramon Marchan, when they leave on June 21.

“We are sending our next-generation triathletes to the Asian Championships, as part of our long-term program to maximize exposure in world-class competitions and high-performance training camps for our high-potential triathletes. Their performances in these events will likewise be a basis for selection to the Asian Games in Hangzhou (China) in September plus the results of the recent SEA (Southeast) Games in Cambodia,” TRAP president Tom Carrasco said in an interview on Saturday.

Construction of new Muntinlupa City baseball field progressing

In the progressive city of Muntinlupa, the City Government recently announced through its official Facebook page that the construction of a new baseball field is gradually moving on. In fact, the local authorities announced that the said facility located in Barangay Tunasan is 80% completed.

Recently, the Bayanan Elementary School Main (Elementary Division) and PAREF Southridge School (High School Division) Baseball Teams, representing Muntinlupa, won the recently concluded NCR Palaro Regional Meet 2023 held in Marikina City from April 24-28.

Because of this win, Muntinlupa City will be the representative of NCR in the coming Pre-National Qualifying Meet before the 63rd Palarong Pambansa from July 29 to August 5, 2023.
