PNP anti-cybercrime operatives raid online lending firm, multiple people caught in the act of sending threatening messages to clients

Did you borrow money from an online lending firm and later got threatened by their agents because you failed to settle your debt on time? For your information, a certain online lending firm in the City of Manila recently got raided by elements of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and resulted in the arrests of many people, according to a Manila Bulletin news report.

Anti-cybercrime operatives of the Philippine National Police (PNP) arrested a total of 83 people in a raid on the office of an alleged illegal online lending agency in Sampaloc, Manila.

Police Brig. Gen. Joel Doria, director of the PNP-Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG), said those arrested were the ones who were sending threats to their clients who would fail to pay the debt on time.

“They were caught in the act of sending threatening messages to customers while some where unlawfully accessing the clients’ personal information which is posted online with libelous remarks,” said Doria.

The operation stemmed from the numerous complaint of threats and humiliating remarks purportedly coming from employees of the online lending agency using the social media.

Doria said they immediately launched the operation after securing a Warrant to Search, Seize, and Examine Computer Data (WSSECD) from a court to search and seize pieces of digital evidence that were allegedly used by the loan shark company in its lending scheme with usurious rates. The raid was conducted in Barangay 497 in Sampaloc district.

The modus of the lending agency is to encourage people to secure a quick loan. But once the client would avail and fail to pay on time, they would send threats and humiliating messages not only to the clients but also to their friends and followers on social media.

“They take advantage of our poor netizens who happened to click on their advertisements and promotions through social media and ‘google play apps store’ that offer instant loans,” said Doria.

“Customers who fall trapped to this online lending agency, experienced public humiliation and harassment coupled with threats and illegal access to their phones’ contact list when customers cannot pay on time,” he added.

Illegal drugs suspect apprehended in Barangay CAA-BF International, Las Piñas City

In Las Piñas City, a buy-bust operation conducted by the local law enforcers resulted in the apprehension of a 37-year-old man and the confiscation of several millions of Pesos worth of illegal drugs, the Manila Bulletin reported.

A 37-year-old man was arrested by members of the Las Piñas police Station Drug Enforcement Unit (SDEU) during a buy-bust operation and confiscated from him more than P6-million worth of shabu on Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 13.

Col. Jaime Santos, city police chief, said the suspect, identified as Jayson Lucas, alias Brad, and tagged as a high value individual in the illegal drugs’ list was arrested around 4:30 p.m. along Bayabas St. BF International Village, CAA Las Piñas City.

Santos said the SDEU conducted a surveillance for the arrest of Lucas after receiving numerous complaints on his illegal drug trade in the community.

The city police chief said the SDEU was able to confiscate from Lucas more or less 1 kg. of shabu worth P6.8 million and three plastic sachets of shabu with a street value of P22,440.

Santos said the confiscated P6.8 million shabu was hidden inside sealed Chinese tea bags. He said the confiscated drugs were turned over to the Southern Police District (SPD) Forensic Unit for chemical analysis.

The city police chief said Lucas is now detained at the SDEU custodial facility and was charged for violation of Sec. 5 and 11, Art. II of Republic Act 9165 (Comprehensive Dangerous Drug Act of 2002).

A Look Back at What If #10 (1990)

Welcome back superhero enthusiasts, 1990s arts and culture enthusiasts, Marvel Comics fans and comic book collectors! Today we go back to the year 1993 and explore a part of Marvel Comics’ universe through the reimagined tales emphasized in the What If monthly series.

For those of you who have gotten very familiar with Marvel Comics’ vast lineup of superheroes, anti-heroes, super villains and supporting characters, the Punisher is one of the most notable characters as he is the most definitive vigilante the publisher ever has in its shared superhero universe. As a comic book protagonist, the Punisher does “good” in fighting crime but he sure is as bad as the bad guys as he commits torture, issued threats of violence, kidnapping, extortion, coercion and even murder towards them. A major factor in the Punisher’s origin (as Frank Castle) was the killing of his family (wife and two kids) committed by a mob as they witnessed acts of killing in Central Park in New York City. The tragic deaths led Castle to become the Punisher who not only relentlessly waged a personal war against criminals but also often wore dark clothes with a large white skull design on the front of his body. The skull symbolized punishment and death to his enemies.

With those details laid down, here is a look back at What If #10, published in 1990 by Marvel Comics with a story written by Doug Murray and drawn by Rik Levins.

Early story

The story begins with the Watcher recalling the time Frank Castle spent with his wife and the two kids at New York City’s Central Park. There, they have fun with their picnic. At this point in time, Frank Castle had previously served his country in the Vietnam War and he carries within him bravery, the experience of violence and vast skills to use weapons.

The weather suddenly worsens as rain starts to fall down causing some inconvenience on the Castle family. Frank’s son struggles as his kite got caught by the large plant nearby. On the other side of the said plant, four armed men and their captive (hanging upside down by the tree) are startled and prepare themselves to shoot anyone who appears.

Frank, who does not realize the mob on the other side of the plant, helps his son get the kite back. The Castle family then decide to go back home not realizing that they came close to discovering and witnessing the illegal activity of the armed men. As the family kept on moving, Frank hears gunfire from a distance…

Quality

To get straight to the point about this comic book, it’s story is really engaging and it has noticeable amounts of darkness and grittiness without going overboard. While exploring what would happen had Frank Castle’s family not been killed, the comic book shows the Punisher getting involved in public safety as a New York patrolman which puts him in a unique position facing crime in radically different ways from what we comic book readers have been used to seeing. The story also explores corruption within the police and the justice system as well.

The way the events and action turned out showed the creative team focused on realism while also establishing the Punisher’s own place within the comic book’s alternate portrayal of the shared superhero universe. More on the subject matter of this comic book, there is a twist that surprised me a lot and it is something that you readers should see for yourselves.

Going back to Frank Castle, it is indeed very captivating to see him portrayed a lot more as a family man who really strives to support his wife and kids no matter how dangerous his occupation really is. The aspect of family in this comic book is very significant as it will make you realize that the definition of family in America in the 21^st century has been distorted as a result of laws or court decisions that reflected wokeness, homosexuality and unrestrained feminism. In short, woke America’s believers reject the concept of the traditional family and the concept of a father leading the family is considered taboo because it goes against LGBT’s so-called values and principles.

Conclusion

When you think about the legacy of the Punisher not only on comics but also in movies and other forms of entertainment media, you will often remember a one-man-army against criminals. What If #10 (1990) has is a really unique take on the Punisher and I can say it has a very captivating script brought to life with really good artwork. Not only does this alternate version of the Punisher shows how he affects criminals, but also how he impacts other parts of the fictional New York society within the shared universe of Marvel Comics (note: characters connected to Spider-Man and Daredevil are here). From start to finish, this Punisher tale by the Murray-Levins team turned out to be very engaging to read.

Overall, What If #10 (1990) is highly recommended!

Wanted man from South Korea arrested in Parañaque City

In Parañaque City, a wanted person from South Korea was apprehended by local law enforcers and their foreign counterparts this past Monday, according to a Manila Bulletin news report. The suspect is wanted for robbery hostage in his home country and the warrant of arrest was issued almost two years ago.

A Korean fugitive was arrested by members of the Southern Police District-Special Operation Unit (SPD-DSOU) and their foreign counterparts in Parañaque City on Monday, Dec. 12.

The suspect, identified as Kim Mihngyu, 29, a businessman, is now detained at the Bureau of Immigration (BI) facility in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City pending his deportation.

SPD Director Brig. Gen. Kirby John Kraft said the suspect was arrested around 5:45 p.m. at Solaire Resort and Casino located in Barangay Tambo, Parañaque City.

Kraft said the Seoul Central District Court issued a warrant of arrest against the suspect on December 23, 2020 for robbery hostage in violation of Article 336 of the Criminal Act of the Republic of Korea.

A Look Back at Venom: Lethal Protector #1 (1993)

Welcome back superhero enthusiasts, 1990s arts and culture enthusiasts, Marvel Comics fans and comic book collectors! Today we go back to the year 1993 and explore a part of Marvel Comics’ universe through the first-ever limited comic book series featuring one of Marvel’s most iconic villains – Venom.

To put things in perspective, the origin of Venom started within the events of the 1980s series Secret Wars which took place in a far-away planet. As a result of that series, Spider-Man returned home wearing the alien symbiote as a costume which turns out to have a mind of its own. After Spider-Man successful separate himself from the symbiote (again) using the loud bells of a church, the living costume eventually found a desperate Eddie Brock and bonded with him to form Venom. In the late 1980s comics of Amazing Spider-Man, Venom became the deadliest enemy Spider-Man ever faced.

Going into the early 1990s, Venom’s popularity continued to grow tremendously. He became one of Marvel’s most popular non-hero type of characters and helped sell a lot of comics for the publisher. Knowing they had something to sell, Marvel approved a 6-issue limited series showcasing Venom. It was also the most anticipated comic book among collectors right after DC Comics killed Superman with Superman #75 (1993).

With those details laid down, here is a look back at Venom: Lethal Protector #1, published in 1993 by Marvel Comics with a story written by David Michelinie and drawn by Mark Bagley.

Early story

The story begins in San Francisco, California. Deep within the city, a man cornered a lady at the dead end of an alley. Just as he was about do something bad to her, Venom leaps in at them. Totally surprised, the man was easily grabbed by Venom who lifted him and hit the wall bodily. Using his costume, Venom then chokes the man to death through the mouth and nose. Venom then picks up the lady’s purse and gives it to her. As soon as Venom leaves, the shocked lady runs away screaming.

Venom swings and leaps as he travels through the city. While traveling, Eddie Brock tells his living costume that while their hatred towards Spider-Man got reconciled a bit, the said superhero also helps the innocent. Eddie then reveals that he was born in San Francisco and they can start a new life together in it. Secretly, Venom turns into Eddie Brock in his civilian form. As Brock walks down the sidewalk, police officers nearby recognize him. It turns out. Eddie Brock was listed by police as a wanted person…

Quality

*Spider-Man and Venom face each other unexpectedly.*

Focusing on the plot, this story took place after the events in Amazing Spider-Man #375 (1993) which was released AFTER this particular comic book. As a standalone Venom story, this one clearly portrays him more of a vigilante in the sense that he goes up against a new force of evil that happens to be pouncing on people that Venom believes to be innocent and powerless. Unsurprisingly, Venom does not seek the help of law enforcers to help the innocent but rather he takes violent action to help the victims, going as far as to kill the so-called bad guys. The bad guys in this story work under a powerful man whose son was killed by Venom a few years prior. Within the context of this comic book, the new force of evil was introduced in subtle ways.

With extensive experience writing tales about Spider-Man and Venom, David Michelinie clearly redefined Venom’s beliefs here. Venom believes in protecting the innocent but he is much more violent and is relentless with cruelty which makes him a clear opposite of Spider-Man. Yet in a way, Venom sure talks and acts in a rather psychotic way and this alone makes him a very unlikable comic book protagonist.

Along the way, the iconic Spider-Man got a rather huge chunk of the spotlight in this comic book making him the 2^nd lead next to Venom. I remember back in 1993 when there were Venom fans who complained about Spider-Man literally stealing the thunder away from his greatest enemy while there were a few Spider-Man fans who defended the icon’s guest participation in the story as he has always been linked with Venom’s origin. Considering the lack of depth in the plot, I can say Spider-Man appearance her served as a somewhat helpful filler.

Conclusion

*Helping victims does NOT justify killing. This makes Venom a major turn-off as a comic book protagonist.*

Venom: Lethal Protector #1 (1993) is a comic book that can be alienating, especially when you are not a Venom fan. I find Venom too evil and too unbelievable to be a heroic figure even though he strong believes in protecting and helping the innocent. In my view, he is more of vigilante living with the delusion of achieving something worthwhile as he interacts with people who happen to be not assisted by the many, many Marvel Comics superheroes. It is not surprising that Venom definitely will never be a good role model. He is a murderer and the act of helping victims never justifies murder. The comic book’s plot lacks weight and Mark Bagley’s art looked a little rushed. What made this comic book interesting are Venom and Spider-Man themselves. Yes, there is a lot of superhero spectacle here but don’t expect anything new when you see Spider-Man and Venom resume their violent rivalry. This comic book is unsurprisingly a warm-up of things to come within its series. It is not a terrible literary work. It’s just not really good and it did not deserve the hype and sales of its time.

Overall, Venom: Lethal Protector #1 (1993) is serviceable.

Love scam syndicate busted in Las Piñas City

In Las Piñas City, operations conducted by the police resulted in the busting of an online live scam arresting three suspects – including two foreign nationals – recently, according to a Philippine News Agency (PNA) news report.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Sunday announced the arrest of three suspects, including two Nigerian nationals, who were engaged in an online love scam, during operations in Las Piñas City on Saturday.

In a statement, PNP chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr. identified the suspects as Leanna Veronica Padua, 23; Nigerians Precious Samuel and Ushahemva Ijirzua, both 23, who were arrested by PNP Anti-Cyber Crimes Group agents.

They were nabbed during joint police operations of the Southern District Anti-Cybercrime Team and Las Piñas City police for violation of Article 315 of the Revised Penal Code on swindling/estafa in relation to Section 5(a) and (b) and Section 6 of Republic Act 10175, also known as Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.

According to the report, the complainant is a 55-year-old female who allegedly was befriended by a certain “Philip Brian” in one social media site, and their online affairs continued using a smart mobile phone application.

The suspect managed to borrow money from the victim, amounting to PHP230,000 via a money transfer.

The investigation showed that after a few days, the suspect continued to ask for money from the victim.

Eight money transfers were solely sent under the name of Leanna Veronica Padua, four transactions were claimed in Pulang Lupa Uno, Las Piñas City, and another at a mall in Las Piñas.

Holmes’ invention of testing blood using only a tiny drop never really worked and Theranos resorted to deception using conventional blood testing machines. #2 Starfield updates – Starfield is an ambitious science fiction role-playing game being made by Bethesda exclusively for Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and Windows PC for release sometime in 2023. Most wanted person of Mimaropa arrested in Parañaque City

In Parañaque City, a wanted fugitive from the region of Mimaropa got apprehended by law enforcers as a result of an operation, according to an Inquirer news report. The arrest happened in front of a hotel in the city.

Police arrested on Thursday, Dec. 1, most wanted person in Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan (Mimaropa) during an operation in Parañaque City.

In a report Friday, the Mimaropa police identified the fugitive as Rodel Dela Peña Ulan, 19, who hails from Barangay Apitong in Naujan town, Oriental Mindoro province.

The police said the Regional Anti-Cybercrime Unit and Naujan police, with the support of the Oriental Mindoro Coast Guard, arrested Ulan in front of a hotel in Parañaque.

Ulan has pending warrants issued by the Family Court, Branch 12 in Naujan, for grave coercion under Republic Act (RA) 7610 (Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation, and Discrimination Act) with a recommended bail of P 36,000.

He is also facing two counts of robbery with violence against or intimidation of persons in relation to RA 7610, with a recommended bail of P100,000 each.

He was also charged with 11 counts of acts of lasciviousness in relation to RA 7610 with a recommended bail of P108,000 each and 11 counts of violation of the Anti-Child Pornography Act of 2009 (RA 9775) in relation to RA 10175 with a recommended bail of P200,000 each.

Five Vietnamese women rescued in Parañaque City

Recently in the City of Parañaque, an entrapment operation resulted in the rescue five Vietnamese women from a prostitution operation and two suspects (both foreigners) were arrested, according to a Manila Bulletin news report.

Five Vietnamese women who were allegedly forced to work as prostitutes by two foreign nationals were rescued during an entrapment operation conducted by members of the Southern Police District-Special Operation Unit (DSOU) in Paranaque on Friday, Nov. 25.

Brig. Gen. Kirby John Brion Kraft, SPD chief, identified the rescued victims as Linh, 29; Yen, 27; Thi Yen, 27; Thuy, 25; and Coi, 31, all Vietnamese.

Kraft said the arrested suspects were identified as Huang Diyong, 37, Chinese national; and Ha Thi Ut, female, 26, a Vietnamese.

The SPD chief said the rescue operation was conducted around 2:30 a.m. at Bayshore I Residence in Parañaque City.

Kraft said the arrested suspects were brought to the SPD-DSOU custodial facility and were charged for violation of the Expanded Anti-Trafficking in Person Act.

He said prior to the rescue operation, one Rommel Battung reported to the police that Vienamese women were being forced to work as prostitutes at a unit of Bayshore I Residence.

Acting on the report, the DSOU immediately launched a rescue operation, which led to the arrest of the two foreign nationals who were allegedly acting as maintainers of the unit.

The above report ended stating that the local authorities recovered from the suspects bills of cash, boodle money, a Toyota Fortuner and an Apple iPhone 14.

Muntinlupa Mayor Biazon calls for end to violence against women and children

In the progressive City of Muntinlupa, Mayor Ruffy Biazon recently emphasized the end to violence against women and children which was part of a new campaign related to the subject matter, according to a Manila Bulletin news report. The said campaign is ongoing and will last until December 12, 2022.

Muntinlupa Mayor Ruffy Biazon called for a concerted effort to end violence against women and children (VAWC).

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) have issued guidelines in observance of the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women slated from Nov. 25 to Dec. 12.

Citing 2017 data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), Biazon said one in four women aged 15 to 49 suffered physical, emotional, or sexual violence from their husbands or partners.

“Kaisa ang Pamahalaang Lungsod sa kampanya para wakasan ang karahasan sa mga kababaihan at kabataan (Violence Against Women and Children o VAWC) (The city government is one in the campaign to end violence against women and children),” he said.

In Muntinlupa, he said, there is the SAGIP ng Muntinlupa center that helps women and children who have experienced abuse.

There are also VAWC help desks in barangays to assist victims in the community. The city government has the Muntinlupa Gender And Development Office which implements programs to stop VAWC, said Biazon.

Data from SAGIP ng Muntinlupa showed that from January to October this year, it assisted 440 women and children who became victims of violence in Muntinlupa.

Of the 440 VAWC cases in the city, 314 or 71.4 percent were children while 126 or 28.6 percent were women.

Out of the 314 cases of violence against children, 71 were sexual abuse, including rape and incest. Among the 126 cases of violence against women, 38 or 30 percent were battery.

In 2021, SAGIP ng Muntinlupa recorded 416 cases of violence against women and children.

Biazon said the city government established the Local Committee on Anti-Trafficking and VAWC (LCAT-VAWC) to coordinate and implement Republic Act 9208 (Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2003) and Republic Act 9262 (Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children Act of 2004).
