I personally have visited the Subic Bay Freeport Zone (SBFZ) from time to time since 1994. I have witnessed how much Subic Bay evolved as a tourism destination, a shopping destination as well as a special events destination. The tourism team of the SBMA has a long track record of sports tourism development and the hosting of many kinds of sports events. That being said, it is not surprising to me that the SBMA won another sports tourism award.
For the newcomers reading this, Subic Bay was the host venue of selected events of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games). Each year, Triathlon Philippines (TriPhil) organizes the Subic Bay International Triathlon (SuBIT) there.

Elite triathlete and back-to-back Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) medalist Kim Mangrobang has officially been confirmed by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) as an awardee of the Women in Sports Awards which will happen on March 20, 2024 at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila.

She won several gold medals for the country in the SEA Games over the past years, including victories in the sport of duathlon (run-bike-run). Welcome back my readers and sports fans! This morning at Kep in Cambodia, Kim Mangrobang proved once again that she is still Southeast Asiaβs reigning queen of duathlon (run-bike-run) as she won the gold medal in the Womenβs Individual Duathlon event of the 32ndSoutheast Asian Games (also referred to as SEA Games and Cambodia 2023). The gold she won was the 10th gold for the Philippines in the ongoing regional games as of this writing.

To put things in perspective, the official results showed that Mangrobang finished the 5 Kilometer run β 20 Km bike β 2.5 Km run event in 1 hour, 4 minutes and 23 seconds (1:04:23). She timed 20:13 in the 5Km run leg, had 23 seconds in Transition 1, completed the 20 Km bike leg in 33:20, had 23 seconds in Transition 2 and completed the 2.5 Km run in 10:04 (note: the fastest run time).
Thi Phuong Trinh Nguyen of Vietnam captured the silver medal in 1:05:12 while Indonesiaβs Maharani Azhri Wahyuningtyas ended with the bronze clocking in 1:06:14. Mangrobangβs teammate Kira Ellis β who was part of the gold medal-winning aquathlon relay team β finished at 5th place with 1:07:11.

Meanwhile on the Menβs Individual Duathlon, the Philippine duo of Fer Casares (the gold medalist of last yearβs SEA Games triathlon along with Mangrobang) and John Chicano (the 2019 SEA Games gold medalist in menβs triathlon) fell short at 5th and 6th places. Casares timed 55:18 while Chicano clocked 55:39. Vietnam won the gold followed by Cambodia the silver and Indonesia the bronze.
Mangrobangβs duty is not over yet as she will be racing in the Womenβs Individual Triathlon tomorrow morning at 6:30 AM. We will find out if she can win another SEA Games triathlon gold medal for the Philippines. The Menβs Individual Triathlon will follow at 8:30 AM.

The Las PiΓ±as government congratulated a daughter of the city, Jocel Lyn Ortiz Ninobla, for winning the gold medal in the individual female poomsae at the South East Asian (SEA) Games held in Vietnam.
Mayor Imelda Aguilar expressed pride in Ninobla, a resident of Talon Dos and a true Las PiΓ±ero, for winning the gold medal and giving pride to the city.
Aguilar said Ninobla also won a gold medal in the same category in the 2019 SEA Games.
The mayor said Ninobla won silver award in the 2018 World Championship in Taipei, a gold medal in the 2019 SEA Games in Manila, a gold medal in the 2021 World Daedo Champs, and a silver award in the 2021 Asian Championship held in Lebanon.
Aguilar said Ninobla also won a bronze medal in the 2021 World Taekwondo Online championship, a gold medal in the 2021 World Mastership championship, a bronze medal in the Asian Taekwondo Online championship, a silver award in the 2021 and 2022 World Taekwondo Poomsae challenge, and the latest gold medal in the female poomsae at the SEA games in Vietnam.

As the 31st Southeast Asian Games (AKA the 31st SEA Games, SEA Games 31 and Hanoi 2021) in Vietnam goes on, the City Government of Muntinlupa congratulated and recognized a local resident who is part of the Philippine Team and won the SEA Games gold medal in the sport of Jiu-jitsu.
This past Monday, Congressman-elect and outgoing Mayor Jaime Fresnedi congratulated Annie Ramirez for delivering a gold medal for the Philippines in the womenβs jiu-jitsu category in the 31st Southeast Asian Games at Dan Phuong Gymnasium, Vietnam. Ramirez paid a courtesy visit at the local City Hall and in the Regular Session of Muntinlupa City Council, Monday morning. The City Council approved a resolution recognizing Ramirezβ feat and granting her financial reward worth P50,000.

On May 14 (Saturday), Ramirez ruled the women’s jiu-jitsu 62 kg event, extending her reign, after winning over Thai Orapa Senatham. A gold medalist in the 2019 SEA Games, she secured the countryβs tenth gold medal in this yearβs SEA Games.

The Philippines got a much-needed boost in the medal tally of the ongoing 31st Southeast Asian Games (AKA the 31st SEA Games, SEA Games 31 and Hanoi 2021) in Vietnam as the regionβs reigning triathlon queen Marion Kim Mangrobang pulled off another gold medal victory in the womenβs duathlon event today. To put things in perspective, this is the second straight gold medal Mangrobang won for the nation and the duathlon event for women happened just a day after the womenβs triathlon took place. That being said, what she achieved for the nation β double gold medals in back-to-back multisport events β is nothing short of amazing!
The official race results of the SEA Games womenβs duathlon showed that Mangrobang finished the grueling 10 kilometer run β 40Km bike β 5Km run event in 2 hours, 13 minutes and 12 seconds, securing the gold medal for the Philippines. The silver medal went to Tahira Najmunisaa Muhammad Zaid of Malaysia who finished 2:14:22 while Indonesiaβs Zahra Putri Bulan Aprillia grabbed the bronze clocking 2:14:49. Mangrobangβs teammate Alexandra Ganzon finished 8th with a time of 2:23:09.

Looking at the individual times, Mangrobang had the 2nd fastest time in the 10Km run leg and went on to complete the 40Km bike leg in 1:09:51. Mangrobang excelled in the 5Km run leg clocking 19:51 which was enough to secure the first-place victory. None of her competitors finished the 5Km run in less than 20 minutes.
Kim Mangrobangβs double-gold accomplishments this weekend helped the Philippines a lot in the ongoing SEA Games. As such, she has established herself as the reigning queen of triathlon and duathlon in the entire Southeast Asian region. On social media, the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) acknowledged the newly won womenβs duathlon gold medal as the 14th gold the country won as of this writing. What Mangrobang achieved here will be remembered for a very long time and it is worth recording in the history of Philippine sports, Philippine triathlon and the SEA Games itself.
As I mentioned in my previous article, the next edition of the Southeast Asian Games will be held in Cambodia next year already. The 32nd SEA Games (marketed as Cambodia 2023) already has triathlon, duathlon and aquathlon among its official events. That being said, Kim Mangrobangβs reign as Southeast Asiaβs best female triathlete and duathlete will last until the next SEA Games happen. Going back to the ongoing SEA Gamesβ duathlon, the Philippines almost won a medal in the menβs duathlon event according to the race results published. John Chicano finished 4th timing 1:57:50. He was just 14 seconds behind the bronze medalist Jauhari Johan of Indonesia. The gold and silver medals were won by the respective duathletes of Vietnam (1:55:58) and Indonesia (1:56:12). Chicanoβs teammate Raymond Torio Molano finished 6th with a time of 1:59:49. Now that the triathlon and duathlon events of the 31st SEA Games are officially over, the Philippines won a total of 3 gold medals, 1 silver medal and 1 bronze. Fer Casares and Kim Mangrobangβs gold-medal accomplishments (plus the respective medal victories of Andrew Kim Remolino and Raven Faith Alcoseba) in Vietnam made that clear the Philippines is the best in Southeast Asia in the sport of triathlon until the next SEA Games happen in Cambodia. On duathlon, the Philippines is the best in Southeast Asia among the women while Vietnam is the best in the region among the men.
Considering what the Philippines achieved in the multisport events in Vietnam, we should all be thankful to the Lord for the victories. I encourage you all to congratulate our nationβs best multisport athletes as well as their coaches, the local triathlon officials, the supporters and other stakeholders who helped made the SEA Games events and participation push through.

Today, May 14, 2022, is another memorable day of great sports achievement for Philippine triathlon and the nation as a whole as triathletes Fer Casares and Marion Kim Mangrobang won the gold medals of the menβs and womenβs triathlon events of the 31st Southeast Asian Games (AKA the 31st SEA Games, SEA Games 31 and Hanoi 2021) in Tuan Chau in Vietnam and the official results have been published online. Adding more to the nationβs SEA Games rankings were the silver and bronze medals won by Andrew Kim Remolino and Raven Faith Alcoseba in their respective triathlon events.

Fer Casares won the gold in the 1.5 Km swim β 40 Km bike β 10 Km run SEA Games menβs triathlon with a time of 1 hour, 56 minutes and 57 seconds. Silver medalist Andrew Kim Remolino followed with 1:59:16. The bronze medal went to Indonesiaβs triathlete Ronald Bintang Setiawan who timed 2:01:35. This resulted gold and silver medal victories for the Philippines in the SEA Games triathlon event for men and this also marked the 2nd consecutive menβs triathlon silver medal for the Cebu-based Remolino. Among the women, Marion Kim Mangrobang finished first with a time of 2:13:31. More than three minutes later, Indonesiaβs Inge Prasetyo crossed the finish line in 2:16:38 to earn the silver medal. Mangrobangβs teammate Raven Faith Alcoseba won for the country the bronze medal after timing 2:18:30. The Cebu-based Alcoseba, who was the top finisher among local women in the recent Subic Bay International Triathlon (SUBIT), was ahead of the 4th placer from Indonesia by 56 seconds. For the Philippines, this resulted gold and bronze victories in the SEA Games triathlon for women.
Very notably, todayβs SEA Game gold medal victory of Mangrobang is her 3rd consecutive gold following her achievements in the 2017 and 2019 SEA Games triathlon events for women. With the gold medal victories of Casares and Mangrobang today, the Philippines is once again the best in triathlon in Southeast Asia. For today, Philippine triathletes added 2 gold medals, 1 silvermedal and 1 bronze medal to help the nation in the overall medal rankings.

The Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP) guns for 1-2 finishes in the triathlon and duathlon events of the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi, Vietnam next month.
National team coach Melvin Fausto disclosed this Tuesday, adding they are sending their strongest teams to achieve that goal.
The triathlon squad is composed of Fer Casares, Kim Remolino, Kim Mangrobang and Raven Alcoseba, with John Chicano and Lauren Plaza as reserves.
The duathlon crew, meanwhile, will have Chicano, Raymund Torio, Mangrobang and Alex Ganzon Dumaran with Casares and Alcoseba as reserves.
Fausto said the shift of Chicano from triathlon to duathlon is a strategic move to achieve that gold medal.
Chicano competed and won the gold in triathlon at the 2019 SEAG edition.
βSi John kasi, heβs a strong runner like Raymund. Duathlon talaga siya malakas, so yun yung wino-work out natin ngayon,β Fausto said during the Philippine Sportswriters Association online forum.
For Chicano, it would be a challenge. He is also using the SEAG as a training ground for his duathlon event at the 2022 World Games in Birmingham, Alabama in July.
βSana makuha namin yung gold and silver kasi maganda naman yung teammup namin ni Raymund,β Chicano said.
βPukpukan din yung preparation namin dito sa Clark.β
Aside from the medals, Fausto said they are also seek to improve their athletesβ times by aiming to finish under one hour and 50 minutes in triathlon.
βMas focused na tayo sa time ngayon eh. Part na yun ng strategy. Like nung last SEAG, naka-focus kami mag 1:55 sa triathlon tapos nag-1:53 si John for the gold medal. Ngayon ang focus namin maka 1:50 to win the gold,β Fausto said.
βSaka yung goal natin is to improve their time to world-class level, lalo na si John na qualified sa World Games.β
As you can see in the above excerpt, the stakes are high for the Philippine Team on triathlon and duathlon. They have been training intensely not just for the SEA Games (set for May 12 to 23, 2022) but also for the Subic Bay International Triathlon. They are training intensely as they know that their Southeast Asian competitors in triathlon and duathlon have intensified (see the related details in the paragraph below). They are training not just for medals but for honors for the Philippines. That being said, May 2022 is indeed a crucial month for the Philippine Team members and their coaches as they have two major events to compete in.

During the early part of the PSA livestream, coach Melvin stated that triathlon is indeed a growing sport and in due time it will become a more relevant sport for Filipinos and Asians. The coach made clear his dedication to triathlon is very strong. Take note that he was involved during the Philippine Teamβs previous SEA Games campaigns. When it comes to their SEA Games competitors, the coach mentioned Indonesia as a well-supported and growing force in triathlon. He also mentioned that competitors from Singapore, Malaysia and host country Vietnam will be present. That being said, expect fierce competition for the SEA Games triathlon and duathlon gold medals. With regards to John Chicano, things will be different as he will engage in the menβs duathlon at this yearβs SEA Games. For the newcomers reading this, duathlon is a multisport event with a run-bike-run format.

As part of the local sports development plan, the City Government of Muntinlupa formally inaugurated the state-of-the-art Track and Field Oval, envisioned to be the breeding ground of future world-class athletes.
Mayor Jaime Fresnedi unveiled the inaugural marker during the blessing ceremony at the Muntinlupa Sports Complex, Brgy. Tunasan on April 19 together with local officials and Long Jump Queen of the Philippines and Heptathlon Champion Elma Muros-Posadas.

The local exec said that the infrastructure project will benefit local athletes and will hone their skills to be equipped for national and international competitions. Fresnedi commits to support MuntinlupeΓ±o athletes through the development of sporting facilities in the local Sports Complex and other programs.
Further, heptathlon champion Muros-Posadas lauded the City Government for constructing the Track and Field Oval as young athletes will now have an optimal place to train.
βNaoverwhelm akoβ¦nagpapasalamat ako sa Muntinlupa dahil may ganito na (Track and Field Oval). Dati kailangan pang bumiyahe papuntang Ultra Complex o kaya delikado dahil nagpa-practice sa kalsada, pero ngayon meron na dito,β Muros-Posadas added.
The former Track and Field national athlete urged student-athletes and local coaches to persevere and do their best as form of gratitude for the efforts of the local government to construct world-class sports facilities.

Designed by City Architect Don Causapin, the Muntinlupa Track and Field has an eight-lane 400m international standard oval with a lot area of two (2) hectares. The sporting venue has a warm up lane, soccer field, provision for control room, area for long and triple jump, shotput, javelin throw, discus throw, water jump, and provision for bleacher buildings.
Recently, the City Government has also inaugurated the Muntinlupa Aquatic Center, the first indoor Olympic-size swimming pool in the country, in celebration of the cityβs 27th Founding Anniversary.
Mayor Fresnedi said the βworld-classβ facility is an investment of the city for the training of Muntinlupa athletes who will participate in national and international sporting events.
βWe value the youth and athletes of Muntinlupa so we invest in facilities that will help them become champions in their respective fields,β Fresnedi said.
The Muntinlupa Aquatic Center is also designed by Arch. Don Causapin and caters to water sports such as Swimming, Water Polo, Artistic Swimming and others programs including Water Safety Training and Competition, Scuba Diving Pool Session, Swim and Survive Programs and PE programs.
The Aquatic Center is part of the Muntinlupa Sports Complex Development Plan. The local sports complex is envisioned to be a βsports tourism centerβ in the country.
Meanwhile, Muntinlupa will also host the 2022 Badminton Asia Championships at Muntinlupa Sports Complex from April 26 until May 1.
Top shuttlers from Asian countries will participate in the competition in a bid to raise their Badminton World Federation (BWF) ranking. This is the countryβs third time to host the Asia Championships since 1961 and 2001.
It can be noted that Muntinlupa also hosted the Badminton event of the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

The country’s triathlon team is boasting a lineup of household names eyeing to continue its regional dominance in the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi, Vietnam next month.
Speaking to CNN Philippines, Triathlon Association of the Philippines president Tom Carrasco emphasized that the bunch of household names should give the country some considerable edge over opponents.
Kim Mangrobang, who ruled the 2019 SEA Games womenβs individual event at Subic Bay, is set to banner the female team anew as she will be backed by former De La Salle University varsity swimmer Raven Faith Alcoseba and Lauren Plaza as a reserve.
Mangrobang secured the gold while compatriot Kim Kilgroe clinched the silver three years ago.
The same finish was tallied by the Philippine menβs triathlon team that year, with John Chicano taking home the gold and Andrew Kim Remolino nabbing the silver.
Come Vietnam, Remolino and fellow star Fernando Casares will aim to duplicate the feat, while defending champion Chicano sits kingly on the reserve list.
Meanwhile, Chicano is shifting focus to rule the duathlon event as he will be joined by Raymund Torio and reserve Casares in the menβs squad.
Mangrobang will have no rest as she will anchor the distaff side along with Alexandra Dumaran and Alcoseba as a reserve.
In 2019, Monica Torres snagged the gold in the womenβs individual duathlon event while Joey Delos Reyes settled for a silver medal for the menβs side. Torres, Efraim Inigo, Paui Fornea, and Emmanuel Comendador clinched the bronze medal in the mixed relay category.
Ani De Leon, Melvin Fausto, and George Vilog are tapped as coaches of the Hanoi-bound Philippine triathlon team.
