Triathlon’s inclusion in the 2021 Southeast Asian Games confirmed!

Hey triathlon fans and sports enthusiasts! If you are looking for some important triathlon news right now, here’s the big one – triathlon has officially been added to the 2021 Southeast Asian Games (2021 SEA Games) which will be hosted by Vietnam!

According to a report published by VnExpress.net written by Dang Khoa, the Southeast Asian Games Federation Executive Committee approved the inclusion of triathlon and a few other sports in the said regional games. The mentioned federation had an online meeting and a formal announcement will be made next month.

More on triathlon, here’s an excerpt from the report:

Vietnam said triathlon (swimming, cycling and running) is a developing sport with many international races being held in the region. It was also included in previous editions of the games.

Vietnam, which plans to hold a triathlon in the northern Quang Ninh Province, will set up a federation in future to develop the sport in the country.

As you can see in the above details, triathlon’s inclusion is significant not only because there are already sufficient SEA Games nation members that competed in the regional games’ official triathlon events but also it adds weight to the development of the multisport in Vietnam. Vietnam, which has a population of more than 96 million people, already has its own communities of triathletes and has hosted several triathlon events.

Here in the Philippines, Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Abraham Tolentino reacted to the inclusion of triathlon, jiujitsu, esports and bowling in next year’s SEA Games.

Tolentino stated: This is good news for us because we dominated three of these four sports when we hosted the games in December 2019.

In last year’s SEA Games, the Philippines won the gold medals in the men’s triathlon, the women’s triathlon and the mixed relay triathlon at Subic Bay.

As the anticipation for the 30th Southeast Asian Games (30th SEA Games) grows, the Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (PHISGOC) announced on September 18 that they expected more than 35,000 people to sign up for the biennial sports meet which will open on November 30 and last until December 11.

According to Alona Quintos (director for accreditation and uniforms), the PHISGOC has received close to eleven thousand applications for accreditation from athlete and officials of the eleven nations participating in the big event.

Already 9,552 have been screened while more than eight thousand personnel have been granted access to the SEA Games. The organizers have been paying close attention to security to make sure that each and every person who got accredited is cleared. Quintos added that pre-valid accreditation cards or PVACs of the eleven national Olympic committees will start printing on September 30.

With regards to media, close to 1,500 personnel composed of journalists, photojournalists, videographers and broadcasters have applied to cover the 30th SEA Games.

So far, the preparation for the SEA Games here in the Philippines is looking good. In fact there were technical delegates from various sports who lauded the local organizers for the preparation and the venues. For one thing, Valson Cuddikotta (technical delegate for athletics) cited the track-and-field stadium in New Clark City as a world-class facility and noted PHISGOC’s efforts to come up with such fantastic venues. Cuddikotta believes the Philippines can conduct any event of the highest magnitude.

Historically speaking, the Philippines hosted the SEA Games in 1981, 1991 and 2005. The very first SEA Games were held in Thailand way back in 1959.

The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority announced today that it will soon start its preparation of the facilities and other pieces of infrastructure in relation to its hosting of seventeen events of the 2019 edition of the Southeast Asian Games (30th SEA Games). The Philippines is the host country and the Subic Bay Freeport Zone is undeniably playing a major role.

The 15 sports events assigned to the Freeport Zone by the SEA Games committee are canoe/kayak, TBR dragon boat, chess, muay, duathlon, triathlon, pencak silat, table tennis, aquatics-open water swim, modern pentathlon, sailing, wind surfing, sepak takraw, handball-beach and volleyball-beach. All these details were sourced from the SEA Games organizing committee.

The listed venue for duathlon and triathlon is Boardwalk, Building 229 area.

Very recently I watched the My Daily Collagen Triathlon at Subic Bay which was a nicely organized and fun event. As I’ve personally observed for many years now, Subic Bay is a great destination for sports, tourism, shopping, business and family bonding. It’s no surprise to me that duathlon (run-bike-run) and triathlon (swim-bike-run) are to be held for the SEA Games there.

Ramon Agregado, the SBMA Senior Deputy Administrator, stated that their administration expects to being project construction in the first week of March to upgrade existing facilities and turn them into world-class sports accommodations.

“The centerpiece of Subic’s infrastructure development project for the 2019 SEA Games will be the Remy Field. Its present six-lane track will be turned into a nine-lane oval complemented by three practice lanes, as well as shower rooms, dressing rooms and a new, bigger grand stand,” Agregado stated.

The administrator also said that existing venues scheduled for rehabilitation include the SBMA Tennis Court, the Subic Gymnasium and the Subic Bay Exhibition and Convention Center. While undergoing rehabilitation, they will be closed to the public temporarily.

With regards to budgeting, Agregado confirmed that a total of P170 million has been set by the national government for the Subic Bay SEA Games preparation. The SBMA however expects a higher amount to cover the required development. In recent times, the SEA Games budget was reduced by the national government from P7.5 billion to P5 billion.

As a whole, there will be 56 sports, with an estimated 8,750 athletes and team officials; 2,050 technical officials, 1,500 press and media attendees; 12,000 volunteers; targeting more than 500 million viewers; converging, cooperating for the SEA Games this year. The event is set to happen November 30 up to December 11.
