Las Piñas City Government releases cash aid to over 2,000 “Tara, Basa” beneficiaries

Recently in the City of Las Piñas, more than two thousand beneficiaries of the “Tara, Basa” program received cash aid from the City Government (in tandem with the Department of Social Welfare and Development), according to a Manila Bulletin news report. The Las Piñas city government, in coordination with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), distributed cash aid to 2,119 beneficiaries of its “Tara,Basa” tutoring program on Thursday, September 12.

Las Piñas city Vice-Mayor April Aguilar led the distribution held at the Verdant covered court in Barangay Pamplona Tres.

Aguilar said the beneficiaries who finished the 20-day tutorial session received P4,700 cash for their service as tutors or youth development workers.

The tutoring program is a new initiative by the DSWD aimed at employing college students from low-income families as tutors for elementary school children struggling with reading.

Through the 20-day tutorial sessions, the tutors not only help improve literacy among young learners but also provide training for parents or guardians, enabling them to continue the tutorial support at home.

Meanwhile, parents who attended the 20-day “Nanay-Tatay” sessions covering topics such as communication and child behavior, were also given cash aid for their active participation.

P85 million worth of assorted products in Parañaque City seized by BOC

Recently in the city of Parañaque, the Bureau of Customs (BOC) seized about P85 million worth of agricultural products, beverages and other imported items after doing an inspection at a local warehouse, according to a Philippine News Agency (PNA) news article.

An inspection of a warehouse in Parañaque City has yielded around PHP85 million worth of smuggled frozen agricultural and beverage products, the Bureau of Customs (BOC) reported on Sunday.

Commissioner Bienvenido Rubio said the operation was conducted after he issued a Letter of Authority (LOA) by the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service-Manila International Container Port (CIIS-MICP) on Sept. 5.

Rubio said operatives of the CIIS-MICP served the LOA to a representative of the warehouse that was found containing various poultry, meat and other products from China suspected to be without proper customs duties and taxes.

“The audacity of these people to smuggle and hide agricultural products right in the heart of Metro Manila is beyond me. They belittle our laws and make a mockery of our hardworking Customs agents by thinking they can operate these illegal activities just a few kilometers from our port,” he said in a statement.

BOC-CIIS Director Verne Enciso said they found frozen duck meat, chicken meat, pork meat and food items with Chinese markings, and assorted food and beverage with foreign markings.

“The initial inventory found that these poultry products will amount to about PHP85 million in the market. But we’re still determining the actual cost once final inventory is conducted by our examiners,” he said.

The warehouse was temporarily padlocked and sealed to protect the subjected goods as the final inventory will be conducted by the assigned Customs examiner and witnessed by warehouse representatives, CIIS and Enforcement and Security Service.

The owners of the warehouses will be given 15 days to present the proper documents to clear out allegations they were hoarding imported agricultural products.

Over 6 million voter applications processed by COMELEC

Over six million voter applications were processed by the Commission on Election (COMELEC), according to a Philippine News Agency (PNA) news article.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) said Thursday it has processed over 6 million voter applications since the registration period started seven months ago.

Citing its latest data, the poll body has received 6,131,834 applications filed from Feb. 12 to Sept. 11.

The region with the most number of applicants is still Calabarzon with 1,020,212; followed by the National Capital Region with 794,855; and Central Luzon with 691,627. Cordillera Administrative Region has the lowest number of applicants processed with 86,991.

Aside from voter registration, the poll body also accepts transfer, change/corrections of entries in the registration records, reactivation of registration records, inclusion of registration records and reinstatement of name in the list of voters, and transfer of registration records from foreign service post to local.

Eligible to register as voters must be 18 years old and above, residing in the Philippines for at least one year, and residing in the area where he/she is looking to get registered for at least six months prior to Election Day.

The voter registration for next year’s midterm polls would end on Sept. 30.

Meanwhile, the poll body said the number of deactivated voters is now at 5,376,630 as of July 15. A majority of the deactivated voters are those that failed to vote in two successive preceding elections totaling to 5,371,376.

BIR confirms that more medicines have been exempted from VAT

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) said 15 more medicines for cancer, high cholesterol, hypertension, and mental illness are now exempted from value-added tax (VAT).

In a statement on Wednesday, the BIR said Commissioner Romeo Lumagui Jr. issued Revenue Memorandum Circular No. 93-2024 last Aug. 27, exempting from VAT certain medicines for cancer, high cholesterol, hypertension, and mental illness.

“The BIR is now a service-oriented agency, this includes the regular update of medicines that will fall under VAT-Exempt products. The BIR supports the government’s thrust in helping the public have access to more affordable healthcare and medicine,” Lumagui said.

The bureau said the circular was made in response to the updated list of VAT-Exempt Products from the Food and Drug Administration, under Republic Act (RA) 10963 and RA 11534.

Typhoon Enteng victims of Muntinlupa receive assistance from City Government

The Muntinlupa City government distributed relief goods on Sept. 3 to families that were affected by tropical storm Enteng and now temporarily sheltered in evacuation centers in the city.

Mayor Ruffy Biazon, together with city and barangay officials, went to different evacuation centers in barangays to distribute the goods.

On Sept. 2, Biazon went to Barangays Bayanan (which has the highest number of evacuees), Cupang and Poblacion.

The Victoria Homes and Villa Carolina 1 Subdivision in Barangay Tunasan were visited by Gender and Development Office focal point system Chairperson Trina Biazon together with Barangay Captain Dave Arcilla and former barangay captain Walter Arcilla and distributed hot meals.

Muntinlupa’s Social Services Department (SSD) also gave emergency kits that include hygiene supplies, basic kitchen utensils, gas stove, grocery items and rice.

The Muntinlupa City Health Office distributed doxycycline capsules to barangay health workers and evacuees as protection against leptospirosis.

24,000 automated counting machines of Miru Systems now in the Philippines

The initial batch of 24,000 automated counting machines (ACMs) from the contracted provider Miru Systems arrived here in the Philippines for use in the 2025 National and Local Elections, according to a news article by the Philippine News Agency (PNA). Over 20,000 automated counting machines (ACMs) that will be used in the May 12, 2025 national and local elections are now in the country, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced on Saturday.

In a press briefing during a visit to a warehouse in Biñan, Laguna, Comelec Chair George Garcia reported that so far, 24,000 ACMs have been delivered by the joint venture of Miru Systems, service provider for next year’s polls.

Garcia showed 7,400 of the machines while there are still 7,000 to be released by the Bureau of Customs.

“Dapat ang commitment sa atin ng Miru para sa buwan ng August ay 20,000 lang so lumalabas sumobra sila sa kanilang commitment ng (Miru committed just 20,000 for August so they exceeded by) 4,000,” he said.

As for other electronic machines and items that will be also be used in polls, Garcia said the South Korean-based company has fulfilled its commitment 100 percent.

Among the items are consolidated canvassing system laptops and printers, cable ties, toners, test ballots, application servers and database servers, Garcia said.

A total of 110,000 ACMs are expected before the end of the year — 30,000 each in September and October and the rest by December.

Comelec officials visited the warehouse with election stakeholders such the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting, National Citizens’ Movement for Free Elections and Legal Network for Truthful Elections.
