First Human Milk Bank in Muntinlupa City Inaugurated

Recently in the progressive City of Muntinlupa, the first human milk bank located inside the Ospital ng Muntinlupa (OsMun) was formally inaugurated just as the local celebration of National Breastfeeding Month went on, according to a news article by the Philippine Information Agency (PIA). For the newcomers reading this, Ospital ng Muntinlupa is located in Filinvest City and is a short distance away from Asian Hospital and Medical Center.

In celebration of National Breastfeeding Month, Muntinlupa City, together with the Rotary Club of Muntinlupa, has opened the first human milk bank in the city, to save and improve the lives of newborns in need.

Located within the Ospital ng Muntinlupa (OsMun), the facility, opened on August 4, is a crucial resource designed to ensure a safe and sufficient supply of donor human milk bank for babies in need, especially those who are premature, have medical conditions, or whose mothers are unable to breastfeed.

According to the National Nutrition Council (NNC), exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, followed by continued breastfeeding alongside complementary foods until at least two years of age, is recommended for optimal growth and development.

Donated breast milk is a life-saving gift. A mother’s surplus milk, even in small amounts, can make a big difference in the life of another baby in need.

The human milk bank highlights the importance of breast milk, often called ‘liquid gold,’ in providing newborns with complete nutrition for their needs and strengthening immunity through a mother’s antibodies. Breastfed babies are less likely to get infections and have a lower risk of developing asthma, diabetes, and obesity. Breastfeeding also supports brain development and higher intelligence when they grow up.

The benefits of breastfeeding extend to the mother as well, by releasing hormones like oxytocin, fostering a deep emotional and psychological bond between the mother and child. Mothers who breastfeed also experience a reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancers, type 2 diabetes, and postpartum depression.

Locals who are interested to donate breast milk are encouraged to call 0912-857-5398. The human milk bank is open from Monday to Friday, 8AM to 5PM.

In a signing ceremony on March 2, Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary William Dar and Israel Ambassador to the Philippines Ilan Fluss signed a joint declaration that would jumpstart technical and economic partnerships between Filipino stakeholders and Israeli agri-food industry players.

“We aim to introduce smart and precision agriculture while using Israeli technology adjusted to local conditions to address the local challenges. Signing the joint declaration is a strong signal that MASHAV, Israel’s agency for development cooperation, will be happy to support the Philippines through technical assistance and capacity-building programs, especially in the dairy industry,” Fluss said.

In the proposed 2020-2025 Dairy Road Map, the government seeks to increase the country’s dairy input to provide milk for Filipino children and address malnutrition and poverty.

“Israel is a model to us. The Philippine government is eager to learn from Israel’s best dairy practices, we want to know more about the technologies. We have also watched with great interest the progress of the joint-dairy projects between Israel and Vietnam, and we wish to learn as much in the Philippines,” Dar said.

“I trust the joint declaration is only the first step to continuing mutual relationship and assistance,” he added.

The signing was followed by a virtual event, which featured best practices from Israel’s dairy industry and leading technologies to increase farm productivity.

At the webinar, Dairy Fresh Asia’s chief dairy expert and co-founder Gonen Harel said his company plans to build a demo farm that can help change the dairy industry and its scale in the Philippines by training the local workforce and blending it with Israeli technologies that have proven its success in Vietnam.

Dr. William Medrano, DA Undersecretary for Livestock, for his part, acknowledged the need to attract more Israeli companies and utilize their technologies for the Philippine milk industry.

Ariane Blancia, commercial officer and sector lead for Agrotechnologies, said that about 1.5 billion liters of cow milk were produced in Israel last 2020 alone.

“There are many reasons why Israeli Holstein cow is a world leader in milk yields, but the real answer lies actually in the combination of the unique method of production and quotas, heat stress management, breeding among others that are used in Israel to manage and improve the dairy herd,” Blancia said.

The Philippines will soon have its dairy industry boosted thanks to this strategic and beneficial partnership with Israel. The State of Israel is very well known for its advancements in agriculture and dairy. Truly this latest development about the blossoming ties between Israel and the Philippines is something we all must be thankful to the Lord for.

Here in the Philippines, what is considered by many to be the most popular local dessert reflecting the Filipino culture is the Halo-halo. For the foreigners and newcomers reading this, the Halo-halo is the cold dessert composed of crushed ice, milk (condensed or evaporated) and a variety of ingredients such as purple yam (ube), nata de coco, leche flan slices, sweet beans, coconut strips, jelly orbs, gelatin portions, fruit slices and a scoop of ice cream.

In Tagalog (the major language here in the Philippines), halo means mix. Halo-halo then means mixture (rough translation – mix-mix) which is realized when a consumer mixes all the ingredients together. In this form, the consumer will experience a unique, sweetened taste with each serving by the spoon complete with different ingredients entering his or her mouth.

Now in line with this article’s topic, try to imagine halo-halo in the form of an ice cream! That’s right! There is such a thing and in certain points during my lifetime, I consumed ice cream designed to have the taste and ingredients of halo-halo! Such halo-halo flavored ice cream were temporarily offered by the different ice cream makers.

Here, I want to show you Gold Delight’s Coco Halo-halo ice cream which is now available in pints and half-gallons!

So what can I say about the Coco Halo-halo ice cream? It is made with water, coconut milk, sugar, milk solids, red mongo beans, white beans, kaong, nata de coco, and jackfruit strips to name some. The ice cream itself is mildly sweet. Its taste is enhanced when you eat the ice cream with the frozen (but not hard) ingredients. While it is not as sweet as the standalone halo-halo dessert (note: which can be served sometimes with condensed milk by certain sellers), it still is delicious in my taste. It is also ideal during this hot summer season. As such, Gold Delight’s Coco Halo-halo ice cream is recommended.
