Two Men Arrested in Parañaque City Over Theft of Electrical Materials and Plumbing Fixtures

Did you notice any faucets or wires missing in your household lately? Recently in Parañaque City, two men were arrested over the theft of faucets and wires from a private residence located in Barangay Sto. Niño, according to a Daily Tribune news report. The suspects attempted to escape.

Two men were arrested early Sunday, 20 July, after allegedly stealing electrical materials and plumbing fixtures from a private residence along Ninoy Aquino Avenue, Barangay Sto. Niño, Parañaque City.

The suspects, both unemployed and residents of Sitio Libijo, were identified as 25-year-old alias “Rowel” and 22-year-old alias “Jasper.”

Both were caught around 1:30 a.m. while security officers were conducting routine patrols. Authorities said the suspects were carrying a white sack and attempted to escape but were quickly apprehended.

A search of their belongings yielded 18 water faucets valued at around P135,000, two regulator gauges worth P7,000, three rolled royal cords valued at P5,000, and a gray wire.

Suspects arrested for stealing Alabang monument brass markers

This past weekend in the City of Muntinlupa, local police officers aided by barangay officials apprehended suspects who were responsible for the theft of brass markers of a city monument, according to a GMA Network news report.

The brass markers of a monument honoring World War II guerillas in Barangay Alabang, Muntinlupa City were found stolen.

The suspects were arrested through the efforts of the police and barangay officials, and will face charges, according to a report by Mao dela Cruz on Super Radyo dzBB on Sunday.

Muntinlupa City Mayor Ruffy Biazon said he went to the Philippine National Police (PNP) station at Alabang Junction where the suspects were brought for investigation.

The suspects revealed that they sold the brass markers to a certain junk shop. The junk shop owner will also face charges for violation of the Anti-Fencing Law. Biazon however said the brass markers may have already been melted.

Earlier, the local government unit offered a P100,000 reward to anyone who can give information that would lead to the arrest of the suspects in the theft of the brass markers.

The monument is located at the plaza of Barangay Alabang. Every February 4, the city recognizes the sacrifice and heroism of the guerillas during World War II.

Recently in Parañaque City, law enforcers apprehended three men for the robbery of a restaurant as well as the illegal possession of firearms and explosives, according to a Manila Bulletin news report.

Three men were arrested for robbing a restaurant and for illegal possession of firearms and explosives following a backtracking police operation conducted by the Parañaque City Police on Wednesday, Feb. 26.

The Southern Police District (SPD) identified the suspects as alias “Samrix,” 32; alias “Jhoward,” 24; and alias “Rowel,” 26.

The police report showed that the suspects were arrested at around 3:41 a.m. after their heist at a restaurant in Barangay San Isidro.

The police said the suspects, armed with firearms and a hand grenade, immediately fled going to the direction of Barangay Baclaran after taking with them P13,000 cash and multiple mobile phones from the employees who they locked inside a locker room.

After their arrest, the suspects yielded a .22 caliber revolver with three live rounds, a hand grenade, two pen guns loaded with four rounds of .9mm ammunition, and a black motorcycle without a plate number.

A male robbery suspect was arrested in his Parañaque City home after supposedly stealing P2,820 from a 24-year-old female victim in Caloocan City, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) announced.

In a report on Tuesday evening, the NCRPO said the suspect held up the victim and her companion by brandishing a firearm and blocking their path along Santo Cristo Street in Barangay 187, Caloocan City at 5:30 a.m. on Feb. 24.

The victim reported the incident to the Caloocan City Police Station, providing a detailed description of the suspect and positively identifying the suspect upon presentation of a scanned photo of the latter.

The suspect had previous cases across Caloocan City, Quezon City and Bulacan province, the NCRPO said.

A follow-up operation by a cyber patrol unit tracker team led to his arrest at 7:20 p.m. also on Feb. 24 in his residence in Barangay Baclaran, Parañaque City, where authorities also discovered a hand grenade.

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Friday announced the arrest of 20 foreign nationals operating an illegal Philippine offshore gaming operator (POGO) hub in Parañaque City.

In a statement on Friday, the NBI said the suspects were arrested in an operation on Feb. 25 at Aseana 3, West Tower, 8912 Avenue, following a complaint of the wife of a Chinese national working for a POGO company operating under the trade name “LWE.”

She alleged that her husband, who worked as a customer service representative, was being held against his will by his employers.

During the operation, agents of the NBI Special Task Force uncovered a fully operational online scam hub.

The arrested foreigners have been charged before the city prosecutor’s office for violating Section 4(b)(1) (Social Engineering Schemes) of Republic Act (RA) 12010, or the Anti-Financial Account Scamming Act (AFASA) in relation to RA 10175, or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.

Chinese national arrested at NAIA Terminal 3 for stealing from judge inside the airplane

A Chinese national was arrested at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 for stealing the handbag and money that belong to a judge while inside the airplane, according to a Manila Bulletin news report. A flight attended saw the said Chinese traveler stealing from the judge who was traveling with two lawyers.

A Chinese national was arrested after he was caught stealing from a female judge aboard a plane at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), the Bureau of Immigration (BI) said on Wednesday, Sept. 18.

In a statement, BI Officer-in-Charge Joel Anthony Viado identified the Chinese national as Lyu Shuming, 48, who was arrested at the NAIA Terminal 3 last Sept. 15. The BI did not identify the female judge.

“We will not allow these kinds of foreigners to victimize our kababayan,” Viado declared. Based on his statement, it can be presumed that the judge is a Filipino.

“The BI will continue to monitor the progress of this case, and blacklist any other members that might be found,” he added.

The BI said that Lyu, who was found to have a valid Philippine visa, was traveling with two other Chinese nationals identified as Xu Xianpu, 41, and Xie Xiaoyong, 54.

“All three have been recommended for inclusion in the BI’s blacklist,” the BI said as it noted that Xu and Xie were also suspected to be thieves and have been allowed to board an outbound flight.

The BI said the three Chinese nationals were transiting the Philippines from Malaysia to Hong Kong.

While aboard the plane, the BI said a flight attendant caught Lyu stealing a handbag and P63,000 in cash owned by a female judge who was traveling with two lawyers.

“He was said to have opened the overhead stowage bin to retrieve the bag owned by the judge,” it said.

Man arrested in Las Piñas City for robbery

A call center agent was arrested by members of the Las Piñas City police Talon Substation for robbing a convenience store on Monday, July 15.

Col. Sandro Tafalla, Las Piñas police chief, reported to the Southern Police District (SPD) the arrest of the suspect identified as alias Allan, 48.

Tafalla said alias Allan staged a robbery hold- up at a convenience store along Rainbow Village, San Antonio Street, Marcos Alvarez, Talon Singko, Las Piñas City at around 2:30 a.m.

According to the victim, identified as alias Daryl, 20, the suspect entered the store and pretended to be a customer.

The victim told the police that the suspect was requested to remove his helmet upon entering the store and instead of heeding the request, alias Allan drew out his firearm, a .9mm pistol, and declared the holdup. The cashier, at that time, was about to transfer the money inside their vault amounting to P67,314.

The suspect reportedly told the cashier “bilisan mo” (faster) during the heist and immediately left store. The suspect boarded his motorcycle going to the direction of Alabang-Zapote Road.

Tafalla said the quick response of members of the Talon Substation led to the arrest of the suspect at around 5:00 a.m. and the recovery of a sling bag where the .9mm pistol was placed loaded with nine ammunitions, 30 live ammunitions, one black holster and the stolen cash.

Amorsolo painting recovered by local authorities, suspects arrested

Recently, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) announced that the stolen painting of national artist Fernando Amorsolo was recovered and arrested two suspects, according to a Philippine Daily Inquirer news report. The painting was previously stolen from a museum in Silay City, Negros Oriental province. It has since been returned to the National Museum of the Philippine for assessment.

The stolen Fernando Amorsolo painting has been recovered, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said Friday.

NBI Director Jaime Santiago presented the recovered 1936 masterpiece of the national artist titled “Mango Harvesters,” which was snatched from the Hofileña Museum in Silay, City, Negros Occidental last week.

Santiago said an entrapment operation was hatched to catch people allegedly involved in the sale of the prized painting for P3.5 million, after receiving a tip from a certain “Atty. Ching.”

The entrapment operation was carried out on Thursday, July 11, at Tomas Morato in Quezon City, which resulted in the arrest of Ritz Chona Ching and Donecio Somaylo, who supposedly brought the stolen art for delivery.

Ching and Somaylo were brought for inquest proceedings before the Department of Justice. They are facing a complaint for violating Presidential Decree 1612 or the Anti-Fencing Law.

Philippines described by Nikkei Asia as “Asia’s epicenter for online shopping scams”

In recent times, a lot of people here in the Philippines got cheated by a scammer over their huge purchases of tickets for a Taylor Swift in Singapore. This incident serves as a painful reminder that the nation has been hit by a lot of scams online, so much so the Nikkei Asia published a December 2023 article describing the Philippines as “Asia’s epicenter for online shopping scams.”

James Relativo thought he had landed a great deal on an electric drum set, but instead the Manila resident was cheated out of his money in a country gaining the dubious distinction as Asia’s worst for online sales scams.

Shoppers across the Philippines have been bilked out of millions of dollars so far this year, with some turning to victim chat groups on Facebook and other social media. A recent report found more than one-third of Filipinos surveyed had been scammed or encountered retail fraud online.

“Some people easily believe in false promises even if they are too good to be true,” warned Alexander Ramos, executive director of the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC).

In retrospect, Relativo might have been more skeptical about a drum set going for 8,000 pesos ($140), less than half the usual price, on e-commerce site Shopee.

But he hit ‘buy’ without hesitating, and soon things turned suspicious. The seller shifted its communications to a messaging app and demanded half the cost of the drums for “refundable taxes.”

More money demands followed until a frustrated Relativo agreed to bypass Shopee’s payment system and settle his remaining balance on GCash, a digital payments platform. He never got his drums.

“I just kept telling him I wanted my money back,” Relativo told Nikkei Asia, his voice laced with exasperation. “It wasn’t like I was dealing with a scammer — he was talking to me, sending me pictures of the drum set being packed.“

The journalist’s saga highlights a bitter experience for a growing number of people in the Philippines, which clocked the highest scam rate for online shoppers across nearly a dozen economies in the 2023 Asia Scam Report, published in November.

Commissioned by the Global Anti-Scam Alliance (GASA) and Taiwan-based tech security company Gogolook, the report surveyed 20,000 respondents about their online shopping experiences in Vietnam, China, Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Indonesia, South Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines.

The shopping scam rate in the Philippines led the group at an eye-watering 35.9%, followed by mainland China at 27.2%. South Korea had the lowest incidence, at 4.2%.

The explosion in online shopping has created a lucrative market for scammers. And a lack of cybercrime awareness is aggravating the problem in the Philippines, where people spend an average of 10 hours a day online by some estimates.

“Although (Filipinos) are considered very connected and digitally wired, (they) do not have adequate digital literacy skills,” said Mark Manantan, director of cybersecurity and critical technologies at the Pacific Forum in Hawaii.

The survey found that Filipinos were easy prey for scammers because they “respond too quickly” to sellers’ demands.

Two men arrested after getting caught in the act of cutting and removing aerial cable wires in Las Piñas City

Two men were arrested after village watchmen caught them stealing Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) aerial cable wires on Tuesday, September 19, in Las Piñas City.

According to the Southern Police District (SPD), the Las Piñas City police identified the suspects as Aldrin Nieva, 24, alias “Bisaya”; and Jowel Eyas, 20.

The suspects were arrested on Maria Concepcion Roa St. in BF Resort, Barangay Talon Dos, Las Piñas City.

Police said the suspects were apprehended by roving village security officers who caught them in the act of cutting and removing PLDT aerial cable wires.

Recovered from their possession were a kitchen knife, a hacksaw blade, and the cable wires worth P147,516. 71.

The suspects were immediately detained at the police custodial facility.
