A Look Back at Punisher 2099 #3 (1993)

Welcome back superhero enthusiasts, 1990s culture enthusiasts and comic book collectors! Today we go back to the year 1996 and explore a part of the Marvel 2099 comics universe through a tale of the Punisher 2099 monthly series.

In my previous retro review, the futuristic Punisher moved on from the deaths of his family members. Influenced strongly by the writings of the late Punisher Frank Castle, Jake Gallows begins operating as a vigilante even though he still has a full-time career as a law enforcer with Private Eye. Not only that, he gets opportunities to face off once again with Kron Stone (Venom 2099 himself) who is responsible for the deaths of Jake’s family.

With those details laid down, here is a look back at Punisher 2099 #3, published in 1993 by Marvel Comics with a story written by Pat Mills and Tony Skinner, and drawn by Tom Morgan.

The cover.

Early story

The story begins on one snowy night within the city. A lady who has grown very addicted with Total Reality makes a deal with a sinister merchant and makes her escape out of reality and into a living digital realm without caring about the consequences she will physically experience.

A black ambulance arrives and out comes the Punisher who hits the merchant hard enough with his weapon for a quick knockout. He then takes off the lady’s optical device (note: this should remind you somewhat of Microsoft’s HoloLens in terms of physical similarities) which brings her back to reality. Gallows knows fully well that Total Reality can actually kill users who do not practice any restraint, and he then crushes the lady’s device. Instead of thanking the Punisher, she expresses her frustration and anger to him before leaving.

Afterwards, Gallows brings the merchant into the black ambulance and puts him on stretcher. There are sharp devices nearby that can kill the merchant if he makes any attempt to escape…

Quality

Among his colleagues at work, Jake Gallows simply acts as he himself is the Punisher captured on video (but his face has been protected digitally).

While the first two issues of this monthly formed the origin and establishment of Punisher 2099, this comic book shows him doing vigilante work and acting as judge, jury and executioner all together. Going back to issue #1, the creative team made it clear that in 2099, justice can be bought and punishment for criminals is much softer compared to how it was in the 20th century. This alone serves as a powerful motivation for Jake Gallows to bring back old-fashioned, harsh punishment for criminals even if it means he has to do it by himself outside of the law. This is the core concept of this comic book and along the way, there is this build-up of the villain Fearmaster and his henchman Multi-Fractor.

More on the story, the creative team took their time to develop Jakes Gallows and emphasize how his mind functions each time he works secretly as a vigilante (who cannot be identified visually) and privately as a Private Eye cop (the organization’s psychologist noticed something about him). More on his secret as the Punisher, it turns out Gallows was able to establish a secret prison complex, equipment for crime-fighting and even a deadly chair underground.

As he continues to be obsessed with fighting criminals with the harsh ways of the past, the futuristic Punisher symbolically becomes a questionable protagonist. On face value, he seems to be good by simply opposing crime and yet he seems to be evil as he commits acts outside of 2099’s laws.

Conclusion

Clearly acting out of the law, the Punisher of the future imprisons criminals and acts as judge, jury and executioner without hesitation. This also shows his dark side.

With its simply concept, Punisher 2099 #3 (1993) succeeds in defining the futuristic Punisher’s motives, intentions and execution. Compared to Frank Castle Punisher, Jake Gallows lives in a society which has laws that are so weak to push back against crime, justice becomes hollow and even laughable. That being said, this comic book is very socially relevant (note: Leftists in America weakened laws which benefited criminals, supported illegal immigrants at the expense of citizens, and have varied movements of arrogant protesters and activists who intimidated people and caused serious damage around the country) and what has been happening in America under the influence of the Democrats makes the dark future of 2099 looking like it could happen. At the same time, the Punisher in this story incidentally became somewhat unlikable as his crime-fighting obsession is gradually turning him into becoming as bad as the bad guys. This is a lively reminder that even in a society that is plagued with crime and weak justice, vigilantism is still a big no-no and it is also very destructive. To be a vigilante means becoming wicked.

Overall, Punisher 2099 #3 (1993) is satisfactory.

Muntinlupa City’s 4th most wanted criminal arrested in Barangay Cupang

Within the progressive city of Muntinlupa, the 4th most wanted criminal (note: wanted for rape) was apprehended by local law enforcers in Barangay Cupang, the Manila Bulletin reported.

To put things in perspective, posted below is the excerpt from the Manila Bulletin report. Some parts in boldface…

Muntinlupa City’s No. 4 most wanted person for rape was arrested by the police on May 22.

The Southern Police District (SPD) identified the suspect as Rainier Ayo, 19, construction worker, who is classified by the police as the No. 4 most wanted person in the second quarter of 2022.

According to the Muntinlupa police, Ayo was arrested by personnel from the Warrant and Subpoena Unit at about 4:30 p.m. in Sitio Tuklas in Barangay Cupang.

The suspect was nabbed based on a warrant of arrest with a bail of P120,000 issued by Presiding Judge Wehrly Gutierrez Mendez of the Muntinlupa Family Court Branch 8 for the crime of rape by sexual assault under Article 266-A of the Revised Penal Code under case 22-224 dated March 7, 2022.

Ayo was brought to the Ospital ng Muntinlupa for medical and physical exam before he was turned over to the Muntinlupa police’s custodial facility.

Let me end this piece by asking you readers: If you are a Muntinlupa City resident, does this newest achievement by the local police make you feel safer? Do you consider rape a serious crime in Muntinlupa?

Muntinlupa City Government commends local cop

A local police officer here in Muntinlupa City was commended by the City Government because of the good deeds she did in the line of duty which resulted in a very exceptional rescue, the Manila Bulletin reported. This is very welcome news to hear given the fact that there are too many chaotic and depressing news reports generated daily by the mainstream media.

To put things in perspective, posted below is the excerpt (note: starting today, light blue backgrounds will be used) from the Manila Bulletin news report. Some parts in boldface…

The Muntinlupa City government congratulated a female police officer in the city who was awarded by the Philippine National Police (PNP) for good deeds.

PNP chief Gen. Dionardo Carlos led the launching of the 2022 National Women’s Month Celebration on March 7 by recognizing Lt. Rizalyn Soledad, a Muntinlupa police officer, as one of the PNP Female Personnel with Good Deeds.

According to the PNP, Soledad was commended for leading the rescue of Divina “Nanay Dina” Estrada in September 2021. Estrada had been away from her family in Pangasinan for 15 years. She had been living in Muntinlupa until her rescue by the Muntinlupa police’s Intelligence Section, Community Affairs Section and Women and Children Protection Desk led by Soledad.

Muntinlupa Mayor Jaime Fresnedi praised Soledad for the PNP award and said women play a very important part in the development of the city and the country.

Manila Bulletin published the story of Nanay Dina on Sept. 20, 2021, who, through the help of the Muntinlupa police, went back to Pangasinan and was finally reunited with her family.

Estrada, 54, begged money from motorists for survival. On Sept. 17, 2021, the Muntinlupa police conducted a rescue operation and found Estrada along Daang Hari in Cavite.

Soledad said Estrada was weak and suffering from cataract. Estrada was unable to go back to Pangasinan since 2006 and lived by begging money from motorists and other people.

According to Soledad, Estrada’s daughter, Mejica Estrada, narrated that her mother went to live in Muntinlupa when her partner was incarcerated at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) so she could visit him. When her partner died, Estrada decided to settle in Muntinlupa.

In August 2021, Estrada asked her neighbors in Biazon Road, Brgy. Poblacion, Muntinlupa to find her daughter on Facebook. The neighbors were able to find Mejica, who promised that she would fetch her mother in Muntinlupa after learning about her situation.

However, Mejica was not able to immediately fulfill her promise when her husband and daughter became ill, and in part due to lockdowns and quarantine restrictions in Metro Manila and provinces because of the pandemic.

The above news report ended stating that after the rescue, the police officers of Muntinlupa accompanied her all the way to Pangasinan province where she got reunited with her daughter and grandchild.

Let me end this piece by asking you readers: What do you think about this newest development? Does this news make you trust the local police more?

Illegal drugs seized and two suspects arrested in Parañaque City

Here is the latest about Parañaque City crime developments. Two individuals were arrested in Barangay Tambo, Parañaque City as a result of a new buy-bust operation according to a Manila Bulletin news report. The illegal drugs seized were worth hundreds of thousands of pesos.

To put things in perspective, posted below is an excerpt from the report of the Manila Bulletin. Some parts in boldface…

Members of the Southern Police District (SPD) Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) arrested two suspects during a buy-bust operation in Paranaque City and confiscated from them P340,000 worth of shabu on Tuesday (Jan. 25).

SPD Director Brig. Gen. Jimili Macaraeg identified the suspects as Kennedy Valan, 25, and Maynard Delos Santos, 25, both of Paranaque City.

Macaraeg said the suspects were arrested at about 8:55 p.m. at 3299 Kabesang Cillo, Barangay Tambo, Paranaque City.

He said SPD-DEU conducted a buy-bust operation after getting information from a concerned citizen that the suspects were the main source of shabu in Barangay Tambo.

The SPD chief said confiscated from the suspects were eleven plastic heat sealed transparent sachets containing shabu with a street value of P340,000.

Let me end this piece by asking you readers: If you are a resident of Parañaque City, are you tired of seeing your city being the hot spot for illegal drugs?

Twelve foreign nationals apprehended in Parañaque City over credit card fraud

The wave of crime involving Chinese nationals in Parañaque City continued (to understand the trend click herehereherehere and here) as the Manila Bulletin reported that twelve Chinese were apprehended in the said city recently over credit card fraud.

To put things in perspective, posted below is an excerpt from the Manila Bulletin report. Some parts in boldface…

Twelve Chinese nationals allegedly involved in credit card fraud were arrested by police in Barangay Moonwalk, Paranaque City on Friday afternoon.

Southern Police District (SPD) director Brig. Gen. Jimili Macaraeg identified the arrested suspects as Ma Juan,24; Chen Bung Hui,34; Zheng Shi Feng,27; Li Zhu Xing,26; Wa Zhen,30; Tong Chao Yun,29; Ji Qing Laz,22;Li Ling Yu Q,32; Yang Shu Qi,23; Yu Zin,32; Wang Shen,20 and Li Wei,2, all staying in Paranaque City.

Macaraeg said the suspects were apprehended at about 5:45 p.m. at 50 Matthews St., Multinational Village, Barangay Moonwalk.

Armed with a search issued by Judge Noemi Balitaan of Paranaque Regional Trial Court Branch 258, the cops raided the suspects’ place after receiving reports about the foreigners’ involvement in the credit card racket.

The SPD chief said the police operatives caught the suspects operating an online gambling.

Police recovered from the suspects laptop computers, cellular phones, dongles, point of sale machine, and blank card.

Let me end this piece by asking you readers: What do you think makes Parañaque City a hot spot in South Metro Manila for crimes involving nationals from China? Did a Chinese national cheat you over your money when you did business with him or her locally? Do you believe that there are still a lot of Chinese nationals living in Parañaque doing illegal activities like credit card fraud, email scam and forms of crime?

When you hear the words Parañaque Renaissance, is crime often the first thing to enter in your mind?

Motorist charged for cursing and hitting police officers in Muntinlupa City

We sure live in a very divided world. Way over there in America, the hate-driven, terrorist-loving (click here and here), racist Marxist movement Black Lives Matter (BLM) hate the police so much they are actually empowering criminals, endangering the innocent and tearing down their society. No matter what the BLM and its fanatics shout about, the police will always be essential.

On police matters right here in the Philippines, a news report published by the Philippine News Agency (PNA) caught my attention as something happened within the jurisdiction of Muntinlupa City and the chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP) issued a statement about it. As of this writing, this news has been publicized by local media outlets.

To put things in perspective, posted below is an excerpt from the PNA article. Some parts in boldface…

The man who assaulted police officers and traffic enforcers in Muntinlupa will face various charges, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, Gen. Guillermo Eleazar said on Friday.

In a statement, Eleazar said the suspect identified as Franz Luke Orbos will face criminal charges, including alarm and scandal, resistance and disobedience to a person in authority or agents, and direct assault.

In a viral video, Orbos was seen shouting and cursing at law enforcers who apprehended him as his parked vehicle blocked traffic along Susana Heights Road in Barangay Tunasan.

He remained uncooperative and resistant even after he was handcuffed. He was allegedly under the influence of alcohol during the incident.

Meanwhile, Eleazar commended the police officers for calmly dealing with Orbos’ rowdy behavior.

And below is a news video from News5.

This past Saturday, the Manila Bulletin reported that the motorist has been released from detention as ordered by the prosecutor of Muntinlupa City. A preliminary investigation has been set for July 30, 2021.

Let me end this piece by asking you readers: What do you think about this news? Are you always respectful towards police officers?

COVID-19 Crisis: Parañaque cybersex den stopped by NBI, several victims rescued

Criminal activities in the city of Parañaque involving Chinese nationals continue to happen. Very recently, a prostitution operation in the form of a cybersex den located in a certain executive village in the city (note: GMA Network did not reveal which village was it in its news report) was entered by personnel of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on a rescue mission. The raid, which took place on May 11, resulted the arrest of one Chinese national and rescue of several victims.

To put things in perspective, here is the GMA Network news video for you all to watch…

Now we can take a close look at the details on GMA Network’s online news report. Here is an excerpt from their report with some parts in bold…

Operatives of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Tuesday rescued 20 women, two of whom were minors, from an online human trafficking syndicate at an exclusive village in Parañaque.

According to John Consulta’s report on “24 Oras” on Wednesday, the NBI arrested Chinese national Kong Chiang She during the operation.

Meanwhile, the authorities found the women on the second floor of a house inside the village with their own rooms.

The NBI said the suspects used an online messaging app for their Chinese customers.

Through the app, selected customers can choose the sexual favors that the victims will do. The victims will then be brought to the customers’ homes or the hotel they have selected.

According to the NBI, sexual exploitation is especially dangerous amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

Two of the women rescued tested positive in the COVID-19 rapid antigen test. Both the World Health Organization and the Department of Health though have discouraged the use of rapid antigen tests due to its unreliability and its chances of giving false negative results.

“When you engage in the services of the victim, they will not show you a certification that they are negative for swab test or antigen test,” NBI spokesperson Deputy Director Ferdinand Lavin said.

The arrested individuals declined to comment.

The above news is very disturbing, especially since the entire Philippines is still struggling under the COVID-19 pandemic and people in the city of Parañaque are struggling to get vaccinated. As for the Parañaque cybersex den that got stopped, there is a possibility that it contributed to the spreading of COVID-19 to other people during the time it operated and fulfilled transactions with its customers. As written in the above news report, two victims were found positive with COVID-19 based on the results of the rapid antigen test (which itself was deemed unreliable according the local and global health authorities). As such, all the victims (who were brought to the Department of Social Welfare and Development or DSWD) need to be tested with the proper, more reliable methods.

Let me end this piece by asking you readers: What do you think about the GMA Network’s crime news report? Did you notice something strange going on in your local community there in Parañaque City? Are the local police and barangay tanods doing enough to secure your local community from criminals? Do you feel disturbed about the presence of Chinese nationals in Parañaque City?

Which particular Parañaque executive village did GMA’s news report refer to?
