COVID-19 Crisis: Safety and sanitation at local cinemas emphasized

It has been days since Alert Level 3 was officially implemented all over Metro Manila which allowed for the reopening of several businesses and allowing them to accommodate more customers as the limitations on capacity were modified. Among the businesses authorized by the to reopen were the cinemas or movie theaters although the actual reopening has yet to happen. In fact, I passed by the cinemas at a local mall I visited this past Sunday and I saw they were still closed. Take note that there were attempts to push for reopening Metro Manila cinemas (click here, here and here).

As the reopening is still pending, there is this Manila Bulletin article about local cinemas will strictly implement health protocols. To put things in perspective, posted below is an excerpt plus a few relevant videos about safety and reopening. Some parts in boldface…

Cinemas and movie houses in the Philippines will strictly implement health protocols when these establishments reopen soon.

The Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) put Metro Manila under Alert Level 3 and allowed the reopening of cinemas with restrictions. Only fully vaccinated people will be admitted and seating capacity will be limited to 30 percent.

The actual date of reopening of cinemas is still subject to confirmation and the public is advised to wait for further announcement, according to the Cinema Exhibitors Association of the Philippines (CEAP).

Cinemas in Metro Manila have been closed for 19 months due to the ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

“That is the main goal right now,” said CEAP Charmaine Bauzon. “We have devoted the past 19 months of cinema closure identifying solutions and precautions based on science. We will implement these measures to confidently welcome back movie fans to cinemas and send them home safe.”

Cinemas are safe spaces

Bauzon assured “the public that cinema is a safe place. In fact, LGUs [local government units] have converted some theaters into vaccination centers, and no super-spreading were ever reported, even though people waited inside for hours.”

CEAP cited a recent study in Germany which concluded that cinemas are safer than almost any other indoor environment as long as safety guidelines are followed like wearing face masks, physical distancing and proper air ventilation.

The German study considered the following factors in its conclusion: People spend an average of only two hours at a cinema; people inside the cinema simply sit down and face the same direction which is known to reduce transmission risks; and people are not talking to each other during a movie, which minimizes possibility of infection.

Cinemas to strictly impose all safety protocols

According to CEAP, besides adhering to the IATF-mandated health standards, it also developed the “Sa Sine Safe Ka” protocols patterned after the “CinemaSafe” measures set by America’s National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO) and endorsed by epidemiologists.

I personally support the reopening of cinemas not just because I love watching movies in them but also because cinemas and their employees can contribute a lot to the economic recovery from this COVID-19 crisis we are all living with. When it comes to viewing movies in the comfort of home, I prefer Blu-ray over streaming anytime. Still the very best way to enjoy movies in their full glory is still inside the cinema! I can never forget the day I first saw Wonder Woman (2017) in the IMAX cinema at SM Southmall which was really an immersive experience. I even replayed that same movie in another cinema which had lazy boy seats. I also saw Logan, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Avengers: Endgame, Aquaman and X-Men: Dark Phoenix on IMAX screens in different cinemas. When it comes to regular cinemas, I viewed Write About Love, Shazam!, and Joker to name some. Eventually I got to watch these movies in the comfort of home mainly on Blu-ray (which is always better than streaming) but I can confirm to you all that in my experience, the best place to view movies is still the cinema!

This iconic scene was at its grandest only in the cinema and I was fortunate to watch it on IMAX format!
The immersion of Aquaman on the big screen inside the IMAX cinema was indeed top-notch.

The good news here, as revealed in the excerpt above, is that local cinemas will exert efforts to make their venues clean and safe as their inevitable customers will be those who have been fully vaccinated. Cinema viewing will be far from normal but the latest developments related to Alert Level 3 are very welcome as it is the first step to returning to normalcy as the nation deals with community management and vaccinations for COVID-19. Above all, I urge all of you fully vaccinated people of Metro Manila and around the nation reading this – support the local cinemas! Put a stop to streaming and take the opportunities to watch movies in the movie theater because that streaming will NEVER match the grandeur and immersion of the cinema! The cinema is always better than streaming!

Recently, the Manila Bulletin reported that the City Government of Las Piñas provided assistance to families who were grieving over the loss of children during a recent tragedy that happened in a certain excavation site in Barangay Pulang Lupa Uno. The said children drowned at the said excavation site.

The Las Piñas City government extended assistance to the families of the three minors who drowned at a government project excavation site at the height of typhoon “Maring” in Barangay Pulang Lupa Uno on Oct. 11.

Mayor Imelda Aguilar ordered the distribution of three food packs to each family of the victims identified as Renz Lian Aquino, 7; Arkeen Haristo, 9; and Alwyne Tandoc, 12, all residents of Bernabe Compound in the city.

The food packs contain five kilos of rice, noodles, canned goods, hygiene kits; and health kits containing vitamins, alcohol and face masks.

Aside from the food packs, Aguilar also gave each of the victim’s family P20,000 as financial assistance.

The local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO) submitted a report to Aguilar and advised the LRT Project Management to secure the area and apply safety precautions at their construction site.

At the height of typhoon “Maring”, the three victims along with some friends played and swam in the floodwaters at the LRT excavation area in Kawayanan Bernabe Compound, Pulang Lupa Uno near Coastal Road.

The above report ended stating that two of the minors screamed for help as they were drowning. The other minor exerted effort to save them but he also drowned.

This past weekend, the City Government of Las Piñas announced that its overall inoculation count is approaching 820,000 overall based on their official statistics accurate as of October 8, 2021. Those numbers were released this past weekend on social media, shortly after the Manila Bulletin reported that the city was within reach of achieving herd immunity.

For transparency, posted below is the official image of statistics released by the City Government through social media.

As before, the numbers just don’t add up. 437,441 1st dose count plus 388,336 2nd dose count equals 825,777. That’s a difference of 7,050 more than the official grand total of 818,727.

Regardless, it is still highly commendable for Las Piñas that 86.9% of their target population of 70% got fully vaccinated already (two doses) while almost 98% of the target population got their first dose. Let’s be honest here…vaccinations exceeding 800,000 in less than one year is major achievement.

Las Pinas City Mayor Imelda “Mel” Aguilar who is seeking a third and last term as the city’s chief executive filed her certificate of candidacy (COC) on Wednesday, Oct. 6, together with her “Tuloy ang Serbisyo” team at the local Commission on Elections (Comelec) office in the city.

Aguilar personally filed her COC before Comelec officer Atty. Jehan Marohombsar. She was joined by her daughter, April Aguilar-Nery, who is seeking her second as city vice-mayor.

The team “Tuloy ang Serbisyo” will be running under the banner of the Nacionalista Party (NP).

“Given the chance to be re-elected for the third time, I will pursue the programs and services which I have already started that will benefit my constituents who deserve nothing less from the local government,” Aguilar said.

The mayor added that the COVID-19 pandemic will not be a hindrance to the platform set by the “Tuloy ang Serbisyo” team that guarantees to sustain and make identified services more accessible and available to the people.

To be precise, the official grand total was at 787,768 as of September 25, 2021. The total number of patients who got vaccinated with the 1st dose was at 422,300 while the number of patients who got vaccinated with the 2nd dose was at 374,260.

A few months ago, Las Piñas City Mayor Imelda Aguilar was honored by the Regional Peace and Order Council-National Capital Region (RPOC-NCR) in recognition of her administration’s perseverance and ensuring order and safety in the city during this COVID-19 pandemic.

Very recently, Mayor Aguilar received another honor this time by Department of Labor and Employment-National Capital Region (DOLE-NCR) according to a news report by the Manila Bulletin.

Through the Manila Bulletin, the City Government of Las Piñas announced that it has officially launched a COVID-19 hotline system composed of five numbers (one landline number and four mobile numbers) to serve residents in the campaign against the spread of the coronavirus and its variants on a schedule of 24 hours per day and seven days per week.

The Las Pinas City government announced that 24/7 COVID-19 hotline numbers are now open to serve residents and help fight the spread of the coronavirus disease.

Mayor Imelda Aguilar said residents who exhibit the symptoms of the virus can call the COVID-19 hotline number for a free phone consultation.

Aguilar said residents who want to be brought to isolation facilities or hospitals can also call the hotline numbers and they will be picked up by the ambulance.

The mayor said the city government’s hotline numbers are 89945782, 09776726211, 09496246824, 09682397922 and 09271400595.

Aguilar said the city government is also planning to add more hotline numbers to better serve city residents.

She said aside from the 24/7 COVID-19 hotline numbers, the city government is also offering free RT-PCR and antigen swab testing.

The chances of the Philippines achieving herd immunity before the end of this year look somewhat better as the nation received so far almost 65 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines including almost 10 million in a single week recently according to a news report by the Philippine News Agency (PNA).

The country has so far received a total of 64,942,000 vaccine doses, including the 9,586,270 doses from Sept. 13 to 19 — the highest weekly delivery since the life-saving shots from various manufacturers started arriving in February.

In a news release issued by the National Task Force Against Covid-19 on Monday night, it said of these shipments, 6,171,590 million doses arrived over the weekend. A total of 561,600 Pfizer doses donated by the US through COVAX Facility arrived Monday evening.

The national government continues to build up the Covid-19 vaccine inventory with the steady arrival of larger shipments of government-procured and donated vaccine supplies.

“We are very happy with the developments in our vaccine acquisition efforts especially with the recent deliveries,“ National Task Force Against Covid-19 chief implementer and vaccine czar Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. said.

“This is a testament of our collective effort — from the national government, the local government units, the private sector, and the global community — in securing much-needed doses for our people,” Galvez added.

Of the more than 9.58 million doses delivered last week, 6.65 million combined doses of Sinovac, Pfizer, Moderna and Sputnik V vaccines were procured by the national government, 909,400 doses of AstraZeneca and Moderna vaccines were purchased by the private sector and local government units (LGUs), and 2.02 million doses were donations through the COVAX Facility.

“We are now beginning to reap the benefits of having a forward-looking and sustainable plan in our vaccine procurement. We will continue to negotiate and hopefully sustain this bulk allocation and delivery schedule in the coming weeks,” Galvez said.

He earlier announced that more than 34 million doses are expected to be delivered this month from various sources and manufacturers. Of this number, 13,041,410 doses have been delivered.

Sustaining bulk deliveries

Vaccine manufacturers and the national government are in talks to scale up the country’s monthly allocation beginning this month, Galvez bared.

Despite most of the supply contracts indicating that the volume of the Philippines’ orders will be shipped in the fourth quarter, the NTF continued to engage with the manufacturers as part of its aggressive efforts to secure additional vaccine doses.

“We are grateful to our embassies and our consular offices around the globe for their hard work and determination to help our country access and secure the 30 million doses that we need monthly,” he said.

As of Sept. 19, a total of 41,414,015 jabs have been administered nationwide. Fully protected persons are now at 18,560,409 or 24.06 percent of the country’s 77 million target population.

More than 22.85 million vaccine doses have been administered as the first shot.

In the National Capital Region, 84.47 percent of its target population have received at least one dose, while 66.3 percent have been fully inoculated.

COVID-19 Crisis: Las Piñas City inoculation count now over 700,000

This past Sunday, the City Government of Las Piñas announced that its overall inoculation count has surpassed the 700,000 mark. Along the way, the number of patients who received their first vaccine dose surpassed 400,000 while the number of fully vaccinated patients in the city exceeded 300,000.

To be more specific, the official count as of September 11, 2021, was 709,368 in total inoculation. As for the breakdowns, 403,191 patients were vaccinated with the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine while 314,888 patients got vaccinated with the second dose.

As before, the numbers of first dose and second dose do not add up to match the declared inoculation total of 709,368. Do the math, 403,191 first dose patients plus 314,888 second dose patients equal 718,079 in all. That’s a discrepancy of 8,711. The discrepancy is around 1.23% of the September 11 grand total.

To put things in perspective, posted below is the official visual reference released by the City Government on their Facebook page on September 5, 2021 and this includes the types of patients who got vaccinated. Also notable is the count of the single-dose Janssen vaccine from Johnson & Johnson.
