According to the Manila Bulletin’s recent report, the Department of Health (DOH) praised the City Government of Las Piñas as a result of the local vaccination sites being clean and orderly to them. The DOH conducted an on-site inspection recently.

The Department of Health (DOH) team praised the Las Pinas City government for its clean and orderly vaccination sites during an inspection visit on Tuesday, on Nov. 30.

DOH Regional director Gloria Balboa and her team visited The Tent and SM Center where the Bayanihan Bakunahan was being conducted.

Balboa praised Mayor Imelda Aguilar for the orderly vaccination procedures in the city’s two vaccination sites.

She also thanked the vacinnees who participated in the Bayanihan, Bakunahan and told them about the importance of getting the jab against COVID-19.

Balboa urged residents to continue to be mindful of the prescribed health and safety protocols as the Omicron variant of COVID-19 has been detected in many countries.

Paul San Miguel, Public Information Office chief, said the city recorded a total of 8,786 residents who participated in the Bayanihan, Bakunahan on Nov. 29 and 30.

San Miguel said Balboa was also accompanied by Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) City Director Mary Ann Planas, City Administrator Reynaldo Balagulan, and City Health (CHO) officer-in-charge Dr. Julie Gonzales during the site visit.

The Manila Bulletin reported that the initial batch of fully vaccinated senior citizens of Las Piñas City got boosted with additional shots for COVID-19 as the local effort on administering booster shots officially launched this past Tuesday. The City Government aims to go higher administering shots for about four thousand fully vaccinated senior citizens daily in the foreseeable future.

The Las Pinas City government started administering booster shots against COVID-19 to the city’s senior citizens on Tuesday (Nov. 23).

Paul San Miguel, Public Information Office chief, said Mayor Imelda Aguilar is targeting about 4,000 senior citizens in the city to get the booster shot per day.

San Miguel said booster shots for medical health workers that started on Saturday (Nov. 20) will continue.

He said those who were scheduled to receive their booster shot will receive a text message from the City Health Office (CHO) indicating the site, date, and time of their vaccination.

The PIO chief explained that senior citizens who were fully vaccinated for six months and scheduled to receive their booster shot must present their vaccination card.

The giving of booster shots to senior citizens, including health workers, are scheduled at 12 noon to 4 p.m. at Villar Sipag Hall, University of Perpetual Help –System Dalta covered gym and at Las Pinas General Hospital Satellite and Trauma Center.

While it is true that the City Government already claimed that herd immunity has been achieved, the continued effort on administering booster shots is essential. By now, some of you may have read varied articles about medical studies showing certain vaccines’ protection wearing off months after the last injection/inoculation. Waning immunity is becoming a major topic of discussion about COVID-19 vaccination, and it has been reported that within six months of the 2nd shot of Pfizer, the immunity wanes regardless of the age of the patient.

Once again, booster shots are meant to be injected into fully vaccinated patients and among them are the senior citizens as one key group (the other groups are the health workers and the  immunocompromised individuals).

The Manila Bulletin reported yesterday that the registration of the vaccination program for the general pediatric population (aged 12 to 17) in Las Piñas City has reached 45,000. That figure is already the majority of the target population of minors.

The Las Pinas City government has recorded a total of 45,000 registrants for the vaccination of the general pediatric population aged 12 to 17 years old.

Mayor Imelda Aguilar lauded the parents and guardians of the minors for heeding the call of the city government to register their children for vaccination against COVID-19.

Aguilar also thanked city residents for their full cooperation in having 45,000 registrants out of the 65,000 targeted children population for vaccination as part of the city government’s “Bakunahan sa Kabataan” program.

The mayor and Vice-Mayor April Aguilar have regularly been visiting the seven identified vaccination sites in the city to give the children as well as their parents encouragement as well as to highlight the importance of getting the jab against COVID-19.

Yesterday the City Government of Las Piñas announced through social media that its overall COVID-19 inoculation count is approaching 875,000 overall based on their latest official statistics that include the vaccination of minors with comorbidities.

For transparency, posted below is the official image of statistics released by the City Government through social media.

As seen above, 423,478 patients received their 2nd dose of COVID-19 vaccines making them fully vaccinated. The 454,840 patients who received their first dose includes the minors. On both the first and second dose statistics, the biggest category of patients was the A3 group.

As before, the official counts of the first dose and second dose don’t match the declared grand total of 874,295. Mathematically, adding 454,840 (first dose) with 423,478 should be equal to 878,318.

Recently it was reported by the Manila Bulletin that City of Las Piñas achieved herd immunity based on statements made by Mayor Imelda Aguilar. This past Monday, the City Government’s official Facebook page published the latest vaccination statistics showing that the citywide inoculation count for COVID-19 has exceeded more than eight hundred sixty thousand as of October 23, 2021.

Mayor Imelda Aguilar announced that barely 61 days before Christmas, her wish to achieve herd immunity for the city was granted with 99.9 percent Las Pineros given their first dose of COVID-19 vaccines and 90.6 percent who are fully vaccinated.

Aguilar said the two key factors in achieving herd immunity were the discipline shown by residents and their eagerness to get the jab against the disease.

She also thanked city residents for not being choosy with the brand of vaccines administered to them.

The mayor said the city achieved 99.9 percent for those given the first dose and 90.6 percent for those given the second dose from the total 447,086 target population.

“Hindi naman po tayo titigil na magbakuna kahit na naabot na natin ang halos 100 porsiyento na nabakunahan. Itutuloy-tuloy pa rin natin ito upang makabalik na tayo sa ating normal na pamumuhay,”(We are not going to stop with our vaccination even if we have almost achieved 100 percent. We are going to continue with the vaccination so we can all go back to our normal lives) Aguilar said.

She said the CIty Health Office (CHO) recorded that senior citizens under the A2 category represent the highest number of vaccinated individuals with 95 percent followed by the economic frontliners under the A4 category with 93.4 percent.

The above report ended stating that Mayor Aguilar appealed to the city residents to continue their local vaccination program locally referred to as “Ligtas na Las Pineros, Lahat Bakunado”. It should be noted that previously the Mayor mentioned that herd immunity was within reach. To be clear this is based on target population statistics.

It has been days since Alert Level 3 was officially implemented all over Metro Manila which allowed for the reopening of several businesses and allowing them to accommodate more customers as the limitations on capacity were modified. Among the businesses authorized by the to reopen were the cinemas or movie theaters although the actual reopening has yet to happen. In fact, I passed by the cinemas at a local mall I visited this past Sunday and I saw they were still closed. Take note that there were attempts to push for reopening Metro Manila cinemas (click here, here and here).

As the reopening is still pending, there is this Manila Bulletin article about local cinemas will strictly implement health protocols. To put things in perspective, posted below is an excerpt plus a few relevant videos about safety and reopening. Some parts in boldface…

Cinemas and movie houses in the Philippines will strictly implement health protocols when these establishments reopen soon.

The Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) put Metro Manila under Alert Level 3 and allowed the reopening of cinemas with restrictions. Only fully vaccinated people will be admitted and seating capacity will be limited to 30 percent.

The actual date of reopening of cinemas is still subject to confirmation and the public is advised to wait for further announcement, according to the Cinema Exhibitors Association of the Philippines (CEAP).

Cinemas in Metro Manila have been closed for 19 months due to the ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

“That is the main goal right now,” said CEAP Charmaine Bauzon. “We have devoted the past 19 months of cinema closure identifying solutions and precautions based on science. We will implement these measures to confidently welcome back movie fans to cinemas and send them home safe.”

Cinemas are safe spaces

Bauzon assured “the public that cinema is a safe place. In fact, LGUs [local government units] have converted some theaters into vaccination centers, and no super-spreading were ever reported, even though people waited inside for hours.”

CEAP cited a recent study in Germany which concluded that cinemas are safer than almost any other indoor environment as long as safety guidelines are followed like wearing face masks, physical distancing and proper air ventilation.

The German study considered the following factors in its conclusion: People spend an average of only two hours at a cinema; people inside the cinema simply sit down and face the same direction which is known to reduce transmission risks; and people are not talking to each other during a movie, which minimizes possibility of infection.

Cinemas to strictly impose all safety protocols

According to CEAP, besides adhering to the IATF-mandated health standards, it also developed the “Sa Sine Safe Ka” protocols patterned after the “CinemaSafe” measures set by America’s National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO) and endorsed by epidemiologists.

I personally support the reopening of cinemas not just because I love watching movies in them but also because cinemas and their employees can contribute a lot to the economic recovery from this COVID-19 crisis we are all living with. When it comes to viewing movies in the comfort of home, I prefer Blu-ray over streaming anytime. Still the very best way to enjoy movies in their full glory is still inside the cinema! I can never forget the day I first saw Wonder Woman (2017) in the IMAX cinema at SM Southmall which was really an immersive experience. I even replayed that same movie in another cinema which had lazy boy seats. I also saw Logan, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Avengers: Endgame, Aquaman and X-Men: Dark Phoenix on IMAX screens in different cinemas. When it comes to regular cinemas, I viewed Write About Love, Shazam!, and Joker to name some. Eventually I got to watch these movies in the comfort of home mainly on Blu-ray (which is always better than streaming) but I can confirm to you all that in my experience, the best place to view movies is still the cinema!

This iconic scene was at its grandest only in the cinema and I was fortunate to watch it on IMAX format!
The immersion of Aquaman on the big screen inside the IMAX cinema was indeed top-notch.

The good news here, as revealed in the excerpt above, is that local cinemas will exert efforts to make their venues clean and safe as their inevitable customers will be those who have been fully vaccinated. Cinema viewing will be far from normal but the latest developments related to Alert Level 3 are very welcome as it is the first step to returning to normalcy as the nation deals with community management and vaccinations for COVID-19. Above all, I urge all of you fully vaccinated people of Metro Manila and around the nation reading this – support the local cinemas! Put a stop to streaming and take the opportunities to watch movies in the movie theater because that streaming will NEVER match the grandeur and immersion of the cinema! The cinema is always better than streaming!

Is your local government doing its best to have its constituents vaccinated for COVID-19? Recently one of the officials of the National Task Force Against Covid-19 (NTF) urged local government units (LGUs) to ramp up their vaccination numbers according to a Philippine News Agency (PNA) report.

An official of the National Task Force Against Covid-19 (NTF) on Monday urged local government units to increase their Covid-19 vaccination numbers in order to achieve 80 percent population protection soon.

“We really ask for the local government officials, local government units, and the implementing agencies to increase their vaccination numbers so as to achieve the target 50 to 80 percent of the target population to be inoculated within this year,” said Assistant Secretary Wilben Mayor, head of the NTF strategic communications sub-task group on current operations.

Mayor welcomed the Monday night the arrival of 272,610 additional doses of the Pfizer vaccine at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 via an Air Hong Kong cargo flight at 9:20 p.m.

In relation to the news above, the City Government of Muntinlupa has vaccinated over 500,000 local residents and registered over 10,000 minors for vaccination. Over at Las Piñas City, their total inoculation count surpassed 800,000 and they recently launched the registration process for local minors for vaccination. Mayor Imelda Aguilar stated that herd immunity is within reach based on their local statistics.

COVID-19 Crisis: Total inoculation count in Las Piñas City approaching 820,000

This past weekend, the City Government of Las Piñas announced that its overall inoculation count is approaching 820,000 overall based on their official statistics accurate as of October 8, 2021. Those numbers were released this past weekend on social media, shortly after the Manila Bulletin reported that the city was within reach of achieving herd immunity.

For transparency, posted below is the official image of statistics released by the City Government through social media.

As before, the numbers just don’t add up. 437,441 1st dose count plus 388,336 2nd dose count equals 825,777. That’s a difference of 7,050 more than the official grand total of 818,727.

Regardless, it is still highly commendable for Las Piñas that 86.9% of their target population of 70% got fully vaccinated already (two doses) while almost 98% of the target population got their first dose. Let’s be honest here…vaccinations exceeding 800,000 in less than one year is major achievement.

Meanwhile, the City Government recently launched the online registration process for COVID-19 vaccination for local minors (aged 12 to 17) which can be done at http://laspinascityonline.laspinascity.gov.ph/eCVRS/

COVID-19 Crisis: Las Piñas City Mayor Imelda Aguilar says herd immunity is within reach

Recently, the Manila Bulletin reported that Las Piñas City Mayor Imelda Aguilar confirmed to them that herd immunity against COVID-19 is within reach based on their latest statistics. Aguilar, who is running for a 3rd and final term as mayor and was honored recently, wishes that Christmas this year will be joyful and asked her constituents to get vaccinated so that herd immunity will be achieved in the city. The City Government can be reached through its COVID-19 hotline numbers.

To put things in perspective, posted below is an excerpt from the very short Manila Bulletin news report. Some parts in boldface…

Las Pinas City Mayor Imelda Aguilar announced on Thursday (October 7) that the city is now nearing herd immunity with less than 14 percent left of the total population that are unvaccinated.

Aguilar said a total of 97 percent of the city’s target population of 447,086 had already been inoculated with COVID-19 vaccines for the first dose while 86.3 percent were fully vaccinated.

“Sana ay maging masaya ang darating na Pasko ng mga Las Piñeros kaya nanawagan ako sa lahat na magpabakuna kahit ano mang brand ng bakuna laban sa COVID-19 upang ating makamit ang tinatawag na herd immunity ng ating siyudad ngayong Kapaskuhan,”(We want Christmas to be a joyful occasion this is why I am asking all Las Pineros to get vaccinated with any brand against COVID-19 to achieve herd immunity) Aguilar said.

The mayor also said that while the city government is slowly opening up the economy, she will invite more investors to generate more job opportunities for Las Piñeros.

Inspired by the legacy left behind by her late husband, former Mayor Vergel “Nene” Aguilar, she said free education for the youth in the city will continue with the construction of the new building for the College of Engineering at the Dr. Filemon C. Aguilar Memorial College (DFCAM).
