Las Piñas-based athletes and performers who have garnered acclaim in recent prestigious competitions were warmly received in City Hall by City Mayor Imelda Aguilar and Vice Mayor April Aguilar on Thursday, October 5th.

Father and daughter duo, Daniela B. Silvestre and Dante Silvestre, clinched gold medals from the Gold Weight Division at the Marianas Pro Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championship Manila 2023, held on August 5-6, 2023 in, Muntinlupa.

In addition, performers from Las Piñas, namely Anahbea B. Detosil, Micaila B. Detosil, Szophia Brielle B. Aguilar, and Scarlette S. Yape, won accolades at the World Championships of Performing Arts 2023 held from July 28 to August 6 in Anaheim, California, USA.

Recently in the City of Las Piñas, the City Government organized a lecture to make local participants aware about tuberculosis in line with the local program focused on healthy living, according to a Manila Bulletin news report. The lecture was held in Barangay Almanza Uno.

The Las Piñas City Health Office (CHO) conducted a comprehensive tuberculosis (TB) lecture as part of the city government’s commitment towards promoting healthy living in the community.

Mayor Imelda Aguilar said the lecture was held at the Almanza Uno Elementary School on Tuesday, October 3, 2023.

Aguilar said the program aimed at educating residents about the transmission, prevention, and symptoms of tuberculosis as well as disseminating information on where to obtain free medication.

She said the scope of the program focuses on the core dynamics of TB transmission, with emphasis on protective measures to avert the spread of the disease.

The mayor said that by explaining the signs and symptoms, the attendees were equipped with essential knowledge to identify potential cases at an early stage, thereby fostering a proactive approach towards disease management and control.

Aguilar said the CHO also reached out to the Department of Education, proposing a collaborative effort to extend the lecture series to various schools in Las Piñas.

Las Piñas City police warns local businesses about beauty pageant scammer

Recently in the City of Las Piñas, the local police department officially warned the business establishments about the ongoing solicitation scam (which includes a fake endorsement) for a so-called beauty pageant and they also revealed captured CCTV footage of the suspect, according to a Manila Bulletin news report.

The Las Piñas City police issued a warning to all business establishments against a solicitation scam using a fake endorsement for the “Miss Amazing Philippines’ 2023” beauty pageant.

City police chief Col. Jaime Santos said Rovic Macariola, a resident of Barangay Almanza Uno and president of Dender and Development, was reportedly approaching business establishments and soliciting donations to support the city’s candidate for the beauty pageant.

Santos said Macariola reportedly solicited donations, amounting to P2,500 to P3,500, to business establishments in exchange for reduced payments for business permits at the Business Permit and Licensing Office (BPLO).

The city police chief said upon verification, they found out that the suspect has a pending case for illegal drug possession, estafa, swindling, and falsification of legislative documents.

Mayor Imelda Aguilar also issued a warning on Friday, Sept. 29, about the use of her fake signature in an endorsement indicating that the suspect is authorized by her office to solicit funds to support the city’s candidate for the “Miss Amazing Philippines’ 2023” beauty pageant.

Upon learning of the illegal activity of Macariola, Aguilar immediately alerted the police and ordered the arrest.

Las Piñas City Mayor Imelda Aguilar warned city residents against a solicitation scam using a fake endorsement for the “Miss Amazing Philippines’ 2023” beauty pageant.

Aguilar said the endorsement using her fake signature states that a certain Rovic Macariolla, a resident of Barangay Almanza Uno, Las Piñas City and a president of Gender and Development was being authorized by her office to solicit to the public to support the city’s candidate for “Miss Amazing Philippines’ 2023” beauty pageant.

She said the local police, under the supervision of Col. Jaime Santos, was already alerted and ordered to arrest the suspect.

Two men arrested after getting caught in the act of cutting and removing aerial cable wires in Las Piñas City

Recently in Las Piñas City, roving security guards of BF Resort Village caught two men in the act of cutting and removing aerial cable wires and this led to their arrest, according to a Manila Bulletin news report. The suspects are now with the local police.

Two men were arrested after village watchmen caught them stealing Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) aerial cable wires on Tuesday, September 19, in Las Piñas City.

According to the Southern Police District (SPD), the Las Piñas City police identified the suspects as Aldrin Nieva, 24, alias “Bisaya”; and Jowel Eyas, 20.

The suspects were arrested on Maria Concepcion Roa St. in BF Resort, Barangay Talon Dos, Las Piñas City.

Police said the suspects were apprehended by roving village security officers who caught them in the act of cutting and removing PLDT aerial cable wires.

Recovered from their possession were a kitchen knife, a hacksaw blade, and the cable wires worth P147,516. 71.

The suspects were immediately detained at the police custodial facility.

The Las Piñas Tourism Council conducted a three-day planning workshop for the formation of the Local Tourism Development Plan (LTDP).

The workshop was organized by the Las Piñas Tourism and Cultural Office under supervising Tourism Officer Paul Ahljay San Miguel, with the guidance of the Department of Interior and Local Governmet (DILG)-Las Piñas under Director Mary Anne Planas.

San Miguel said the seminar for the tourism council was conducted by the Department of Tourism -National Capital Region (DOT-NCR). He said representatives of the DOT-NCR, Kenneth Ruedas and Bamba Ramos, discussed the best and effective ways to develop and formulate a local tourism plan.

San Miguel added that the LTDP will be the primary tourism guide of their office in planning projects to help boost tourism in the city.

He expressed his gratitude to the DOT Regional Director of NCR Sharlene Batin for attending the seminar and giving some guidance and support to the tourism council.

Las Piñas City Mayor Imelda Aguilar led the distribution of cash assistance to 139 rice retailers at Las Piñas City Café in the City Hall grounds on Tuesday, Sept. 12.

The mayor said the City Agriculture Office (CAO), in coordination with the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), distributed P15,000 cash assistance to each of the beneficiaries.

Aguilar took a decisive stance in response to the rising prices of rice to safeguard the city’s small-scale rice retailers, traders, and vendors.

The cash assistance is just the beginning of the city government’s initiatives to help its small rice business owners, said Aguilar, showing her commitment to aiding local businesses and prioritizing community welfare.

The mayor also revealed that the city government is in the process of developing a more comprehensive plan to support local rice traders and vendors.

The cash assistance aims to provide immediate relief to small businesses in the city, empower them to continue their operations and contribute to stabilizing rice supplies in the community since the livelihoods of rice retailers are under severe strain due to the surging price of rice.

Antonio P. Antonio remembered by many on 10th death anniversary

Over a decade has passed since the life of Antonio P. Antonio (also referred to as Tonton and APA) came to an end which impacted the lives of the surviving members of his family as well as the BF Homes community where he once served as the federation president.

For the newcomers reading this, Antonio died tragically on September 11, 2013 after he got shot several times by a family member at their home (Villa Antonio). Specifically, he passed away at Asian Hospital in Muntinlupa City. He was 63-years-old and he left behind a thriving family business, a very notable record as an entrepreneur and a legacy of serving the BF Homes residents diligently.

Recently, the surviving members of the family as well as several guests converged together at the Antonio Mausoleum in Everest Hills Memorial Park in Susana Heights, Muntinlupa City for the 10^th death anniversary of APA.

*Xialen, a daughter of the late APA, delivered a touching speech to the many people who attended.*

*Pastor Jonas Bernales led the prayer and reminded the attendees of the goodness of God as they remember the legacy of APA.*

I personally attended the gathering which was truly commemorative and unifying. There were several old friends of Antonio P. Antonio who shared their respective memories of him which gave viewers a clear view of what he was like, how he supported those who badly needed help and how insightful he was when it comes to achieving goals with his partners. There were also family members who shared their memories of APA as a very dedicated family man.

Xialen, a daughter of the late APA, shared how drastically their lives changed after his departure. She revealed that even before the tragedy of September 11, 2013, an incident occurred at their family home that involved armed invaders who tried but failed to eliminate Antonio. Still, she recalled the love, the care and passion that they received from him.

“I cannot help but relive the last days we spent with our father. The laughter, the wisdom, the love he showed upon us…they were etched in our hearts and minds,” Xialen recalled.

She stressed that the family still remembers the pain of APA’s demise from 2013 as their lives fell into chaos subsequently. Gradually they recovered as adjusted to life and managed the businesses Antonio left behind.

“In the midst of our sorrow, we found strength and resilience. We learned from the lessons he taught us and we carried the love and values he gave us that kept our family together,” Xialen stated to the many guests watching. “We hope that justice, elusive as it may be, will soon happen.”

For about five years now, the Antonio family has been pursuing justice for APA and you can find the details in my 2020 article about Antonio P. Antonio. That same article contains details about how the suspect was found and brought back to the country.

At this stage, it remains to be seen how the pursuit for justice for the late Antonio will turn out in the regional trial court (RTC) in Parañaque City.

Show cause orders against several BSKE candidates surpass 300 nationwide

The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) revealed that show cause orders for Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) candidates over election offenses have surpassed three hundred nationwide, according to a Philippine News Agency (PNA) news article. The BSKE will have an official campaign period before the voting happens on October 30, 2023.

A total of 304 candidates for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) have been issued show cause orders for various violations as of Tuesday, Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chair George Erwin Garcia said.

Aside from the 102 issued last week and 122 on Monday, another 80 were sent to candidates on Tuesday, Garcia said in a Viber message.

Garcia said the complaints were about the distribution of breads and noodles with imprinted faces of the candidates on the packaging; door-to-door distribution of maintenance medicine kits for senior citizens; cakes for birthday celebrators; and smart televisions, fans and sacks of rice as raffle prizes.

Comelec data show that Cebu, Quezon City, Pampanga, Bukidnon, Nueva Ecija, Laguna, Cavite, Bulacan, Manila, Batangas, Bataan, Cotabato and Rizal have a high number of premature campaigning violation reports.

Violations were also recorded in some areas in Caloocan, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Taguig, Sorsogon, Tarlac, Camarines Sur, Leyte, Albay and Negros Oriental, among others.

“Expect the number to increase as complaints come in and the show cause orders roll out,” Comelec spokesperson John Rex Laudiangco said in another Viber message Monday night.

Comelec gives BSKE candidates three days upon receipt of the show cause order to respond.
