FamilyMart now serving customers inside BF Homes subdivision

FamilyMart, a chain of convenience stores with presence in strategic locations in Metro Manila and some provinces, recently opened a brand-new branch inside BF Homes subdivision in ParaƱaque City. The new store is located just steps away from the corner of Aguirre Avenue and Gonzales street. Very near FamilyMart BF Homes (which is not located along Aguirre Avenue) are Vapor and the closed gate of the nearest enclave.

This is FamilyMart BF Homes.

On the Facebook page of FamilyMart BF Homes, a picture was posted showing the ribbon-cutting ceremony that took place on the afternoon of September 28. On that same picture post, it was announced that the convenience store will operate daily from 9AM to 7PM.

Having seen that social media post, I took the opportunity to go there, see the new store and buy myself a drink. Having visited the past FamilyMart branch (opened in 2013 outside of the subdivision but still part of Barangay BF Homes) that once operated along Presidents Avenue years prior, I wondered how much interior space the new store has for its customers.

After parking my vehicle, I paid attention to the signs on the entrance. I could not just go in because I had to complete an online registration form (for COVID-19 contact tracing and referencing) in order to enter (note: it would be great if the store starts using the StaySafe.ph system as an additional contact tracing option). After submitting my details online, a store employee opened the door and near him were the temperature scanner and the sanitizer.

Family Mart BF Homes has an interior set-up that resembles a local community pharmacy. There is a counter with the store employees behind it waiting to serve customers. On the other side of the counter, there was limited space for customers to move with and there were shelves of varied products (mostly consumable goods), a freezer containing ice cream products, as well as refrigerators containing drinks and a few ready-to-cook food items. Ultimately, I bought a Milo shake from them.

While driving along Aguirre Avenue, watch out for this corner sign to find FamilyMart BF Homes.

Having visited FamilyMart branches in ParaƱaque City (two), Muntinlupa City (two) and Makati City (two), I can say that FamilyMart BF Homes is easily the smallest branch I ever visited. Not a bad thing but notable. The store is ideal if you want to stop by, buy something to enjoy and move on to your next destination.

Regardless, FamilyMart BF Homes still has a lot to offer that other convenient stores cannot. If you love chicken, FamilyMart has FamiChicky and ChickyPops. If you want something unique to eat, try their pizza bar. If you can’t afford ramen at the restaurants, FamilyMart offers ramen that is friendly to your budget. For the beverage enthusiasts, the Iced Caramel Macchiato, Sakura Ichigo, Signature Hot Matcha and Iced Creamy Matcha should be tried.

270 people apprehended in ParaƱaque City for online sabong

The latest ParaƱaque City crime news are here and not only was it about a relatively new form of gambling but it also involved a few hundred suspects! Two hundred and seventy suspects to be precise according to a news report by the Manila Bulletin.

To put things in perspective, posted below is the excerpt from the Manila Bulletin news report. Some parts in boldface…

ParaƱaque City police apprehended on Saturday 270 individuals for playing online ā€œsabongā€ (cockfight) and for failure to observe social distancing.

Prior to the suspects’ arrest, the police received information about mass gatherings inside the Roligon Mega Cockpit Arena on Quirino Avenue in Paranaque City, according to city police chief Col. Maximo Sebastian.

Sebastian said cops in the nearby police sub-station were immediately dispatched and found the 270 gamblers playing online sabong.

He said the suspects were immediately rounded up and given citation tickets for violation of the health protocols under the new quarantine alert system.

The city police chief said those who will be caught for the first offense will be fined P1,000, P3,000 second for the second offense, and P5,000 for the third offense.

Sebastian also said the management of the arena failed to show a permit to operate online sabong.

He said the owner of the arena claimed they have a permit from PAGCOR and that their online sabong was just a dry run.

The above report ended stating that according to the police, any form of gambling is illegal under the new alert level.

Let me end this piece by asking you readers: Do you believe the claim that a PAGCOR permit was really issued and that the online sabong was just a dry run or trial activity? How familiar are you with online sabong (AKA e-sabong)? Are there lots of people in your local community who engage in any form of gambling during this pandemic? Do you think that the criminal elements are building up illegal gambling all over ParaƱaque City?

87-year-old lady dies inside her house during fire incident in ParaƱaque City

Tragedy struck ParaƱaque City yesterday when the Valenzuela Compound in Barangay Sto. NiƱo, ParaƱaque City got hit by fire which resulted several families becoming temporarily homeless and the death of an 87-year-old lady who was trapped in a house that got burned according to a Manila Bulletin news report.

To put things in perspective, posted below is the excerpt from the Manila Bulletin news report. Some parts in boldface…

An 87-year-old grandmother died when she was trapped inside their burning house early Wednesday morning in ParaƱaque City.

The victim, identified as Lolita Matadling, who was bedridden, was trapped at the second floor of their burning house at Kaingin 2, Valenzuela Compound, Barangay Sto. NiƱo, ParaƱaque City.

According to the report of the ParaƱaque Bureau of Fire and Protection (BFP), the family member of Matadling were not able to rescue her because the second floor of the house where she was staying and where the fire reportedly started, suddenly collapsed.

The BFP said about 50 families were affected by the fire and they are now temporary staying at a covered court in Barangay Sto. Nino.

The BFP is still investigating the cause of the fire.

Posted below is a related news video by GMA Network.

Let me end this piece by asking you readers: What is your reaction about this latest tragedy in ParaƱaque City? Is the nearest residential compound in your barangay prone to fire incidents?

COVID-19 Crisis: Marikina City Mayor speaks out against national government over flip-flop related to extended MECQ for Metro Manila

Someone had to speak out about the unpleasant surprise that affected us Metro Manila residents and stakeholders. This is about the most recent flip-flop that the national government committed regarding quarantine control over the National Capital Region (NCR) and Marikina City Mayor Marcy Teodoro slammed the national authorities which the Manila Bulletin thankfully magnified by reporting about it.

To put things in perspective, posted below is the excerpt from the Manila Bulletin news report. Some parts in boldface…

Marikina City Mayor Marcelino ā€œMarcyā€ Teodoro slammed the national government on Wednesday for its last minute decision to defer placing the National Capital Region (NCR) under the General Community Quarantine (GCQ) and retained it under the Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine (MECQ) until September 15.

ā€œTingin ko, hindi lang mga negosyante ang nagalit, madami ding mga mayor ang nagalit. Dapat may kahandaan talaga at hindi magdulot ng kalituhan sa ating mga kababayan yung mga ganitong pangyayari (I think not only the businessmen were angry about the decision, even the mayors were also infuriated. There should always be preparedness in these situations to avoid confusion),ā€ Teodoro said in an interview with DZBB Wednesday morning.

All departmental agencies operating at the secretary’s level are here, that’s why all announcements should be clear. Second, all guidelines and implementing mechanisms should be clear, and not just clear, but timely as well),ā€ he added.

Teodoro said Metro Manila mayors, as well as the IATF, held a meeting yesterday regarding the quarantine classification of Metro Manila.

May naibigay na draft, pero hindi pirmado (Yesterday, we had a meeting that started at 9 a.m. and lasted until 12 or 1 p.m. We were asking for the clear guidelines. However, they did not give us any. They just provided us with a draft, and it was not even signed),ā€ Teodoro said.

ā€œTapos, after two hours, eh nabalitaan namin na nagkaroon ng meeting ng mga alas tres ng hapon na nag emergency meeting ang IATF at hindi na nakausap muli ang mayors buhat noon (After two hours, we found out that the IATF held an emergency meeting at three in the afternoon, but the mayors were left out),ā€ he added.

Teodoro said all the mayors were asking for are clear guidelines for the GCQ with granular lockdown system’s implementation because a lot of preparation are needed for it, especially in terms of manpower and logistics.

ā€œNarinig nalang namin yung pahayag sa media na (extended na ang MECQ) (We just heard the announcement in the media that the MECQ was extended),ā€ Teodoro said.

Wow! The details in the above excerpt are quite revealing! The Metro Manila mayors met with the IATF and the latter provided the local government heads an unsigned draft in response to the request for guidelines. Then the IATF had an emergency meeting leaving the mayors out. Something seems fishy and the Mayor of Marikina City had the courage to reveal publicly what exactly happened.

For the newcomers reading this, Metro Manila was supposed to revert back to general community quarantine (GCQ) as announced by the national authorities and then the flip-flop happened shortly after. As I mentioned before, businesses and their employees in the food-and-beverage sector as well as those in the personal care services sector have been negatively affected by the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) and the modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) itself does not make life easier for them. And then there is the lack of an explanation from the national authorities about the flip-flop.

Already one local business was reported by CNN Philippines to have been affected negatively by the national authorities’ flip-flop. I encourage you to read the news article.

Let me end this piece by asking you readers: What is your reaction about Marikina City Mayor Teodoro’s slamming of the government over the flip-flop? Do you think the IATF is working hard right now to prepare for the next announcement on community quarantine in Metro Manila? Are the members of your local community ready for a potential granular lockdown like what happened in ParaƱaque City?

You may answer in the comments below. If you prefer to answer privately, you may do so by sending me a direct message online.

COVID-19 Crisis: Several young people apprehended in ParaƱaque City for curfew violations

Are you a resident of ParaƱaque City struggling with the COVID-19 situation and do you have anything to say about the way local authorities are managing your local community? Previously, the residents of Annex 35 within Better Living Subdivision made the news by complaining about the limited essentials while they were locked down and some of the provided food were spoiled. I wonder if Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairman Benhur Abalos is aware of the Annex 35 situation.

The other day, the Manila Bulletin published the latest about crime in ParaƱaque. Nine young individuals were caught by barangay personnel for violating the local curfew in Barangay San Dionisio. How exactly did they violate curfew? Read the excerpt below from the Manila Bulletin news report (which referenced ABS-CBN). Some parts in boldface…

Nine youths were arrested by patrolling barangay watchmen after they were seen playing computer games inside a shop in Paranaque City Sunday night.

According to a report, the youths aged 18 to 22 were arrested at about 11 p.m. in a shop located at 6087 Tramo I, Barangay San Dionisio. They were brought to the barangay hall.

The youths were issued a citation ticket for a fine of P200 each for violating curfew, according to ABS-CBN report.

The city’s Business Permit and Licensing Office, Atty. Melanie Soriano-Malaya, when asked about the incident, said that computer shops were not allowed to operate under the Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine (MECQ).

Malaya said they were waiting for the report for them to verify if the computer shop has a permit to operate.

The above report ended stating that, in case the computer shop has a permit to operate, it may be revoked in relation to violating curfew. Take note, however, that the incident happened on Sunday night during modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ). By the time you are reading this, general community quarantine (GCQ) is in effect again all over Metro Manila.

Let me end this piece by asking you readers: What is your reaction about this latest development in ParaƱaque City? Were you able to find anyone violating curfew there in your local community? Is there a computer shop or cyber cafƩ in your local community that operated during the curfew?

COVID-19 Crisis: Residents of locked community in ParaƱaque City complain about limited essentials

In recent times, due to a report that there were individuals living in Annex 35 (a community of about one thousand houses within Better Living Subdivision) had contracted COVID-19, the City Government of ParaƱaque had the said community locked-down supposedly for fourteen days to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

This past weekend, GMA Network reported that Annex 35 residents have been complaining about the effects of the granular lockdown. To put things in perspective, posted below is an excerpt from the GMA Network news report. Some parts in boldface…

Residents of a portion of the Better Living Subdivision in ParaƱaque City have been complaining after they were reportedly placed under a granular lockdown without prior notice, leaving them isolated for 10 days.

According to residents of Annex 35 of the subdivision, they were only made aware of the initial four-day granular lockdown at 8 p.m. on Tuesday. The lockdown was implemented four hours later, and was then extended to 10 days.

ā€œ8 p.m. halos sarado na ang establishments. ā€˜Di ba meron po tayong allowed na time for Metro Manila na open ang ganitong establishment, so ā€˜di lahat nakapuno ng enough food and water supply,ā€ a resident of the area said in a report on GMA’s ā€œ24 Oras Weekendā€ on Sunday.

(At 8 p.m. almost all establishments were already closed. Don’t we have an allowed time for establishments in Metro Manila to open? Not all residents were able to store enough food and water.)

ā€œHindi lahat ay okay. Kasi meron kaming community page sa Facebook, ang daming hinaing like water supply, ā€˜yung food supply namin not enough for 10 days,ā€ the resident added.

(Not all are okay. We have a community page on Facebook and there are a lot of appeals for water supply, our food supply was not enough for 10 days.)

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) released food packs, but the residents said this is not enough. The homeowners’ association could not intervene as the granular lockdown was implemented by the local government.

The resident said that there were food packs that were supposed to have been distributed among the residents, but these were spoiled due to the lack of manpower to deliver the goods.

(With the number of houses here, only a few people are distributing the food stored at the gate. Some get spoiled because of the lack of manpower, only one patrol car was making the rounds.)

The resident acknowledged that the lockdowns are for health reasons, but the local government should have given residents ample time to store goods for the lockdown.

ā€œAlam ko po na kailangan mag-ingat, they are after doon sa aming health na hindi kumalat ā€˜yung virus. Pero po sana binigyan nilang konsiderasyon, binigyan nila yung mga tao at least one day na makapag-plan, one whole day. Hindi ā€˜yung 8 pm tapos 12 midnight sarado na,ā€ the resident said.

(I know we need to be careful, they are preventing the virus from spreading, but they should have given consideration. They should have given residents at least one day to plan, one whole day. Not announce at 8 p.m. and then close the barriers at midnight.)

GMA News has reached out to the local government of ParaƱaque, but calls were left unanswered.

And now here is a related news video also from GMA Network. Watch it closely…

Let me end this piece by asking you readers: What is your reaction about this latest development in ParaƱaque City? Are you able to relate with the complaints raised by the people living in the locked Annex 35 community? Do you believe that the City Government of ParaƱaque and the local DSWD were lacking (if not unprepared) with regards to manpower and efforts to provide sufficient supplies to the Annex 35 residents? What do you think will help prevent food from getting spoiled? Do all of these somehow impact your personal beliefs about the power of the local government unit (LGU) over residential communities that already have their own community management?

If you are a resident of Annex 35 reading this, what else should the City Government and DSWD do to make your lives easier apart from supplying your essential needs? Are you searching for charitable organizations out there to provide you assistance?

You may answer in the comments below. If you prefer to answer privately, you may do so by sending me a direct message online.

ParaƱaque police officer passed away

In a recent report by the Philippine Daily Inquirer, there was this police officer assigned to the Philippine National Police (PNP) station in ParaƱaque City who died two days after he got run down by a vehicle driven by someone drunk along Dr. A. Santos Avenue (DASA).

To put things in perspective, posted below is an excerpt from the Inquirer report. Some parts in boldface…

A police officer assigned to the ParaƱaque City Police Station died after being run down by a car with a drunk driver on Dr. A. Santos Avenue, the Southern Police District (SPD) said on Tuesday.

Cpl. Nestor Guslab Jr. was manning a quarantine control point in front of the Loyola Memorial Park in Barangay San Antonio last Friday night when a silver Toyota Corolla Altis approached the checkpoint at high speed.

Police officers at the checkpoint tried to flag down the speeding car, which was said to be driven by a certain Dominic Alastair David. But instead of stopping, the driver even sped up and hit Guslab who fell on the ground.

The car continued moving towards the direction of Baclaran until stopped by responding officers at the corner of San Antonio Avenue — about 2 kilometers from the quarantine control point.

Police officers found in the car a small sachet containing dried leaves suspected to be marijuana

Guslab, who had serious head and body injuries, was brought to the ParaƱaque Medical Hospital and then transferred to the Uni-Health Medical Hospital, where he eventually died on Sunday, two days after.

Let me end this piece by asking you readers: Did you witness any reckless driving incidents or car accidents in ParaƱaque City recently? Does the death of the ParaƱaque police officer impact you somehow? When you hear the words ParaƱaque Renaissance, does crime or reckless driving enter in your mind?

COVID-19 Crisis: Delta variant cases in ParaƱaque and Las PiƱas reported

According to a recent news report by the Manila Bulletin, the highly infectious Delta variant has been detected in Metro Manila totaling twenty-five cases while the nation as a whole has over one hundred so far. Focusing on South Metro Manila, the cities of ParaƱaque and Las PiƱas have one Delta variant case each. The City of Muntinlupa so far has none and the Manila Bulletin’s report reflects the Muntinlupa City Health Office’s statement.

To put things in perspective, posted below is an excerpt from the Manila Bulletin news report. Some parts in boldface…

Twenty-five out of the 72 local cases of the Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus were found in Metro Manila, an official of the Department of Health (DOH) said.

Of the said cases, 10 were found in the City of Manila, seven in Pasig City, two cases in San Juan, while one case each for Las Pinas, Makati, Malabon, Quezon City, Taguig, and Paranaque, said DOH-National Capital Region (NCR) Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit head Dr. Manuel Mapue II during a televised press briefing on Tuesday, July 28.

ā€œDito sa dalawampu’t lima na ito, walo na ang gumaling, isa ang namatay; at kasalukuyan, labing-anim ang active ang kanilang sakit (Of these 25, eight have already recovered, one has died; and currently, sixteen cases are still active),ā€ said Mapue.

To note, the Philippines already detected 119 Delta variant cases, 72 of which were considered local cases while 47 were returning overseas Filipinos.

COVID-19 surge in NCR?

Meanwhile, there is still no definitive evidence to say that Metro Manila is currently experiencing a surge in COVID-19 cases amid the threat of the Delta variant, said Mapue.

Based on our record until yesterday, we cannot call it a surge yet. We have no evidence yet to call it a surge, although we see that the cases are starting to rise),ā€ he said.

ā€œKaramihan sa ating local government units nag-uumpisa na ring tumaas although hindi pa stable ang pagtaas. May araw na mababa. Merong araw na konti lang ang nadadagdag sa kaso nila (Most of the cases in our local government units are starting to increase, although the rise is not yet stable. There are days that are low. There are days when very little is added to their respective caseload,ā€ he added.

Mapue said that there is an uptick in COVID-19 cases in Las Pinas, Makati, Pasay, and San Juan.

To call it a surge, the DOH official said that the daily cases should have a ā€œsteadyā€ increase.

Mapue urged the different LGUs to intensify their responses against COVID-19, particularly on the prevent, detect, isolate, treat, and reintegrate (PDITR) strategy to curb the rising number of cases.

It should be noted that in recent times, the City Government of Las PiƱas made its move with the Delta variant in mind. Within the city, Barangay Talon Dos posted on July 24 via its Facebook page its confirmation that the Delta variant has been detected. The following is an excerpt from their July 24, 2021 Facebook post: Covid cases are high and the highly contagious DELTA VARIANT has entered Talon Dos. For the meantime, vaccinated or not, avoid going out unless necessary. If you experience headache, cold, cough, fever, nausea, LBM, loss of smell or appetite, fatigue please stay at home, isolate, and call your physician.

Considering how infectious the Delta variant is, that alone should compel any unregistered and unvaccinated Las PiƱas City resident (or any resident from other cities and towns) to make the move to register themselves and join the line for vaccination once called by the local vaccination organizer.

Any Las PiƱas resident who has yet to get registered for free COVID-19 vaccines can learn the ways (4 methods) by clicking here. Anyone who is ready and willing to register online can click bit.ly/LasPiƱasVaccination

Let me end this piece by asking you readers: What do you think about the latest news? Do you believe that the slow spread of the Delta variant in Metro Manila will lead to another lockdown? Do you think that the local authorities of ParaƱaque and Las PiƱas are capable of preventing the spread of the Delta variant among their residents?

COVID-19 Crisis: Strict GCQ declared for NCR and bordering provinces effective August 1 until August 15, 2021

Even as more people in Metro Manila have gotten worried about the highly infectious Delta variant which has been detected already in ParaƱaque and Las PiƱas, the general community quarantine (GCQ) for the National Capital Region (NCR) and bordering provinces has been declared which will take effect on August 1, 2021 and will last until August 15, 2021, as reported by the Philippine New Agency (PNA).

To put things in perspective, posted below is an excerpt from the PNA article. Some parts in boldface…

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte approved the recommendation to extend the general community quarantine (GCQ) ā€œwith heightened restrictions in Metro Manila until August 15, MalacaƱang announced on Wednesday.

The stricter GCQ has been retained in Metro Manila, after the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) observed an increase in the daily attack rate, two-week average attack rate, and health care utilization rate in the country’s metropolis, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a pre-recorded Talk to the People.

ā€œThe Chief Executive extended the General Community Quarantine (GCQ) with heightened restrictions classification of the National Capital Region beginning August 1, 2021 until August 15, 2021,ā€ Roque said in a press statement.

Apart from Metro Manila, four of its nearby provinces – Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, and Rizal – will also be placed under GCQ with heightened restrictions from August 1 to 15, Roque said.

And here is a related news video by GMA Network…

Let me end this piece by asking you readers: Are you surprised about the strict GCQ for Metro Manila and the provinces of Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna and Rizal? Do you believe that the highly infectious Delta variant can be contained? Are you ready for another lockdown? Have you been vaccinated already?

Twelve foreign nationals apprehended in ParaƱaque City over credit card fraud

The wave of crime involving Chinese nationals in ParaƱaque City continued (to understand the trend click here, here, here, here and here) as the Manila Bulletin reported that twelve Chinese were apprehended in the said city recently over credit card fraud.

To put things in perspective, posted below is an excerpt from the Manila Bulletin report. Some parts in boldface…

Twelve Chinese nationals allegedly involved in credit card fraud were arrested by police in Barangay Moonwalk, Paranaque City on Friday afternoon.

Southern Police District (SPD) director Brig. Gen. Jimili Macaraeg identified the arrested suspects as Ma Juan,24; Chen Bung Hui,34; Zheng Shi Feng,27; Li Zhu Xing,26; Wa Zhen,30; Tong Chao Yun,29; Ji Qing Laz,22;Li Ling Yu Q,32; Yang Shu Qi,23; Yu Zin,32; Wang Shen,20 and Li Wei,2, all staying in Paranaque City.

Macaraeg said the suspects were apprehended at about 5:45 p.m. at 50 Matthews St., Multinational Village, Barangay Moonwalk.

Armed with a search issued by Judge Noemi Balitaan of Paranaque Regional Trial Court Branch 258, the cops raided the suspects’ place after receiving reports about the foreigners’ involvement in the credit card racket.

The SPD chief said the police operatives caught the suspects operating an online gambling.

Police recovered from the suspects laptop computers, cellular phones, dongles, point of sale machine, and blank card.

Let me end this piece by asking you readers: What do you think makes ParaƱaque City a hot spot in South Metro Manila for crimes involving nationals from China? Did a Chinese national cheat you over your money when you did business with him or her locally? Do you believe that there are still a lot of Chinese nationals living in ParaƱaque doing illegal activities like credit card fraud, email scam and forms of crime?

When you hear the words ParaƱaque Renaissance, is crime often the first thing to enter in your mind?
