Chinese national arrested at NAIA Terminal 3 for stealing from judge inside the airplane

A Chinese national was arrested at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 for stealing the handbag and money that belong to a judge while inside the airplane, according to a Manila Bulletin news report. A flight attended saw the said Chinese traveler stealing from the judge who was traveling with two lawyers.

A Chinese national was arrested after he was caught stealing from a female judge aboard a plane at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), the Bureau of Immigration (BI) said on Wednesday, Sept. 18.

In a statement, BI Officer-in-Charge Joel Anthony Viado identified the Chinese national as Lyu Shuming, 48, who was arrested at the NAIA Terminal 3 last Sept. 15. The BI did not identify the female judge.

“We will not allow these kinds of foreigners to victimize our kababayan,” Viado declared. Based on his statement, it can be presumed that the judge is a Filipino.  

“The BI will continue to monitor the progress of this case, and blacklist any other members that might be found,” he added.

The BI said that Lyu, who was found to have a valid Philippine visa, was traveling with two other Chinese nationals identified as Xu Xianpu, 41, and Xie Xiaoyong, 54.

“All three have been recommended for inclusion in the BI’s blacklist,” the BI said as it noted that Xu and Xie were also suspected to be thieves and have been allowed to board an outbound flight.

The BI said the three Chinese nationals were transiting the Philippines from Malaysia to Hong Kong.

While aboard the plane, the BI said a flight attendant caught Lyu stealing a handbag and P63,000 in cash owned by a female judge who was traveling with two lawyers.

“He was said to have opened the overhead stowage bin to retrieve the bag owned by the judge,” it said.

Recently in the City of Las Piñas, more than two thousand beneficiaries of the “Tara, Basa” program received cash aid from the City Government (in tandem with the Department of Social Welfare and Development), according to a Manila Bulletin news report. The distribution was led by Vice Mayor April Aguilar.

The Las Piñas city government, in coordination with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), distributed cash aid to 2,119 beneficiaries of its “Tara,Basa” tutoring program on Thursday, September 12.

Las Piñas city Vice-Mayor April Aguilar led the distribution held at the Verdant covered court in Barangay Pamplona Tres.

Aguilar said the beneficiaries who finished the 20-day tutorial session received P4,700 cash for their service as tutors or youth development workers.

The tutoring program is a new initiative by the DSWD aimed at employing college students from low-income families as tutors for elementary school children struggling with reading.

Through the 20-day tutorial sessions, the tutors not only help improve literacy among young learners but also provide training for parents or guardians, enabling them to continue the tutorial support at home.

Meanwhile, parents who attended the 20-day “Nanay-Tatay” sessions covering topics such as communication and child behavior, were also given cash aid for their active participation.

Recently in the City of Las Piñas, the City Government’s mobile kitchen was sent to four different evacuation centers and provided meals to the victims of Typhoon Enteng, according to a Manila Bulletin news report.

The “Kusina ng  Las Piñas” or mobile kitchen visited the four evacuation centers in the city housing victims of Tropical Storm Enteng to provide them with nutritious food.

Mayor Imelda Aguilar ordered the deployment of the “Kusina ng  Las Piñas” to provide hot meals to evacuees at the Verdant court, Carmencita covered court, Pulanglupa 2 Evacuation Center, and at the Pagtakhan covered court.

Aguilar said the city government recorded a total of 761 individuals who sought temporary shelter at evacuation sites at the peak of Enteng.

She said the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) reported that 150 individuals or 43 families in Barangay Talon Tres were evacuated to the Carmencita Covered Court, 131 individuals or 29 families from Talon Kuatro were staying at the Pagtakhan covered court, 435 individuals or 110 families from Pamplona Tres were staying at the Verdant Covered Court, and 45 individuals or 17 families from Manuyo Dos.

The mayor said Vice-Mayor April Aguilar immediately responded to personally monitor the evacuees to ensure their safety and medical needs.

Recently in the City of Las Piñas, police officers responded to an emergency call and eventually apprehended two akyat-bahay suspects for trespassing and theft inside a subdivision in Barangay Pulanglupa Dos, according to a Manila Bulletin news report.

Two “akyat- bahay” members were arrested by members of the Las Piñas City CAA substation early morning of Saturday, August 31.

Las Piñas City police chief Col. Sandro Tafalla identified the suspects as alias “Jason,” 22, and alias “Oscar,” 34. They were arrested inside a subdivision in Barangay Pulanglupa Dos, Las Piñas City.

Tafalla said the victim, identified as alias “Russel,” was awakened by the loud barking of his dogs at around 1:30 a.m. and discovered the suspects inside his home and had stolen a cellular phone and a silver watch.

He said the suspects tried to flee but his neighbors had already called for police assistance which led to the arrest of the suspects.

The city police chief said recovered from alias Jayson was a .38 caliber loaded with ammunitions while an unknown caliber pistol and shoulder bag where the stolen items were placed were confiscated from alias Oscar.

Very recently in the progressive City of Muntinlupa, local residents who got displaced by Typhoon Enteng received assistance from the City Government, according to a Manila Bulletin news report. Mayor Ruffy Biazon and local officials visited the victims and distributed goods to them at the evacuation centers.

The Muntinlupa City government distributed relief goods on Sept. 3 to families that were affected by tropical storm Enteng and now temporarily sheltered in evacuation centers in the city.

Mayor Ruffy Biazon, together with city and barangay officials, went to different evacuation centers in barangays to distribute the goods.

On Sept. 2, Biazon went to Barangays Bayanan (which has the highest number of evacuees),  Cupang and  Poblacion.

The Victoria Homes and Villa Carolina 1 Subdivision in Barangay Tunasan were visited by Gender and Development Office focal point system Chairperson Trina Biazon together with Barangay Captain Dave Arcilla and former barangay captain Walter Arcilla and distributed hot meals.

Muntinlupa’s Social Services Department (SSD) also gave emergency kits that include hygiene supplies, basic kitchen utensils, gas stove, grocery items and rice.

The Muntinlupa City Health Office distributed doxycycline capsules to barangay health workers and evacuees as protection against leptospirosis.

Recently in the city of Parañaque, a security guard foiled a robbery attempt resulting in the arrest of one suspect and the recovery of the victim’s handbag, according to a Manila Bulletin news report. The incident happened in Barangay Tambo and there are two other suspects still at large.

A security guard successfully arrested one of the three suspects who tried to rob a woman in Parañaque City on Wednesday, August 21.

The Southern Police District (SPD) said the suspect identified as “Armando,” 44, was arrested at around 3:00 p.m. along Roxas Boulevard corner Bradco Avenue in Barangay Tambo, Parañaque City.

Based on the police report, a 28-year-old woman had just got out from a taxi when she was approached by the suspects brandishing a handgun and forcibly took her handbag.

The security guard on-duty was then alerted by the victim’s shout and immediately responded leading to the arrest of Armando.

The hero guard recovered the victim’s handbag and a replica .45 caliber pistol from the suspect.

Meanwhile, his two other cohorts identified as “Kalapati” and “Norby” escaped. The police is now conducting a follow-up operation for the arrest of the two.

Local hero of Muntinlupa City commended by Mayor Biazon

Recently in the City of Muntinlupa, a man who risked his life to save his young relatives during a fire that destroyed their home was commended by Mayor Ruffy Biazon, according to a Manila Bulletin news report.

Muntinlupa Mayor Ruffy Biazon commended a man for his heroic act of saving his two nephews and a niece from their burning house in Barangay Buli.

A fire hit a residential area in Manatra in Barangay Buli, Muntinlupa on Aug. 19, razing houses and displacing families.

Biazon visited the Buli evacuation center where 58 families or more than 200 individuals are staying. During his visit, Biazon met Freddie whose arms are bandaged due to burns.

According to the mayor, Freddie suffered burns when he rescued his two nephews and a niece–Precious, Vhon and Kerth–from their burning house during the fire. 

He said the three children were trapped inside the comfort room and could not get out.

Precious was attending her online class when the fire erupted and quickly spread. Some of the family members were able to get out of the burning house but Precious and her two cousins were left inside and quickly went to the comfort room.

According to Precious, because of the intense heat, she didn’t know what to do and she seemed to have accepted what would happen to them.

Suddenly, their uncle Freddie arrived and he pulled them out of the burning house. The fire was already big but they all tried to get out.

Precious and her two cousins were very thankful to their Uncle Freddie for saving them and getting out without any injury.

They called their uncle a “superhero” and they are wishing that his burns would heal soon.

“Hanga ako kay Freddie sa kanyang tapang at walang pag-aatubili na pagligtas sa kanyang mga pamangkin. Although may injury, mabuti nakaligtas siya at sina Precious, Vhon, at Kerth (I am truly amazed at Freddie for his bravery and no hesitation to rescue his nephews and niece. Although he has injury, it’s good that he and Precious, Vhon and Kerth safely escaped),” Biazon said.

SM Investments Corporation acquiring 184 hectares of land in Muntinlupa City

Something significant could happen within the City of Muntinlupa in the near future as SM Investments Corporation (SMIC) is acquiring 184 hectares of land there as part of a property-for-shares swap with subsidiary Intercontinental Development Corporation (ICDC), according to a Manila Bulletin business news report.

SM Investments Corporation (SMIC), the flagship of the Sy family, is acquiring 184 hectares of land in Muntinlupa City from a nearly wholly-owned subsidiary, Intercontinental Development Corporation (ICDC), through a property-for-shares swap.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, SMIC said its Board has approved the swap of SMIC with 96.75 percent-owned subsidiary ICDC, which will convey to SMIC its lands in Susana Heights, Muntinlupa City, in exchange for new SMIC common shares.

“In accordance with applicable Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) rules and regulations, the respective Boards of Directors of the SMIC and ICDC deemed it necessary and advisable to enter into the Transaction,” SMIC said.

It added that the swap aims to optimize the properties’ utilization and development and align with their broader business strategies.

SMIC said it will increase its real estate assets through the acquisition of the properties, although the acquisition will have no material effect on its business, financial condition, or operations.

One of the country’s biggest conglomerates, SMIC, reported a 10 percent improvement in consolidated net income to P40.2 billion in the first half of 2024 from P36.5 billion in the same period last year. The firm said this reflected a 13 percent growth in net income to P21.8 billion in the second quarter.

Consolidated revenues rose five percent in the first half to P301.4 billion from P286.7 billion year-on-year and grew six percent to P157.7 billion in the second quarter.

“SM’s double-digit growth in the first half results reflects a positive environment for our businesses,” said SM Investments President and CEO Frederic C. DyBuncio.

The Muntinlupa City government bagged awards at the 2024 Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony organized by the National Nutrition Council (NNC)-National Capital Region on Aug. 16 at the Novotel Hotel in Quezon City.

According to NNC-NCR, Muntinlupa LGU “has been recognized as 1st Year Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) Maintenance Contender!”

The “prestigious award is presented to LGUs that demonstrate efficient and effective nutrition program management, leading to sustained nutrition improvements among their population.”

“We successfully maintained our CROWN (Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition) Contender status for the first year—patunay na consistent tayo sa mahusay na implementation ng ating nutrition programs and services since our first Green Banner Award in 2019 (proof that we are consistent in great implementation of our nutrition programs and services since our first Green Banner Award in 2019),” according to Muntinlupa Mayor Ruffy Biazon.

In addition, Muntinlupa was bestowed the award for Best in Documentation of Nutrition Programs, “acknowledging their exemplary performance in documenting nutrition programs and projects which contributed to high-quality nutrition program management.”

Muntinlupa’s Dr. Magdalena Meana also won runner-up as the Regional Outstanding City Nutrition Action Officer (CNAO).

Biazon, meanwhile, received the Nutrition Leadership Award as chairperson of the Muntinlupa City Nutrition Committee.

“These awards reflect our dedication to keeping our community healthy,” said Biazon.

A Korean national was arrested by combined personnel of the Parañaque City Police BF Homes substation, Bureau of Immigration (BI), and Fugitive Search Unit (FSU) of the Republic of Korea for fraud in South Korea.

The Southern Police District (SPD) identified the suspect as “Park,” 33 who was arrested at around 1:30 p.m. along Manrea St., BF Homes, Parañaque City.

Park was arrested by virtue of a warrant of arrest issued by the Seoul Central District Prosecutor’s Office and Hong Sung District Court for fraud of Article 347 in violation of the criminal act and telecommunications business act of the Republic of Korea.
