Two alleged members of a gang that robbed P134 million from Skyway motorists apprehended by police

If you have been traveling along the Metro Manila Skyway, did you notice gang-related activities along the way? I had to ask that question because it turns out a certain gang composed of people who wore hoodies and bonnets and wielded axes had committed acts of robbery along the Skyway more than once and reportedly robbed P134 million from motorists. Very recently, two alleged members of the gang were arrested by the police, according to a GMA Network news report

To put things in perspective, posted below is an excerpt from the GMA news report. Some parts in boldface…

For more insight, posted below is the related GMA Network news video…

Let me end this piece by asking you readers: What do you think about this recent development? Do you think the police will be able to find and arrest the other members of the Skyway Robbery Holdup Group who are still at large? Do you think it is time for more police patrol operations to happen along the Skyway so that robberies could be prevented? Are you concerned that the Skyway Robbery Holdup Group could harm more motorists and rob them of their valuables? Do you know anyone who got robbed by the Skyway Robbery Holdup Group? How do you think the gang knew that their victims carried lots of money or valuables with them?

Meet Barangay BF Homes Kagawad-elect Mariel Tumang

A few days ago in ParaƱaque City, the local Commission on Elections (COMELEC) office proclaimed Mariel Angela Tumang as Kagawad-elect (winning candidate for a seat in the barangay council) after the results of the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) of Barangay BF Homes were finalized. Tumang, by the way, is the current Chairwoman of the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) of Barangay BF Homes.

To be very clear, Tumang and several of her campaign teammates were proclaimed election winners as follows: Jeremy S. Marquez as Barangay Captain, Cielo Lazatin as Kagawad, Sheryl Ortonio Gonzales as Kagawad, and Paolo Marquez as Kagawad. The BSKE in Barangay BF Homes is notable as this resulted in Jeremy Marquez’s return as chairman of the barangay while his brother Paolo (who served as the chairman since 2018) returned as Kagawad.

On the very day she was proclaimed as Barangay BF Homes Kagawad, Tumang posted on social media a touching message to her supporters, friends and family members which went as follows:

Barangay BF Homes Kagawad-elect Tumang with her proclaimed teammates Jonathan Espino (2nd from left, Kagawad-elect), Cielo Lazatin (4th from left, re-elected Kagawad), Paolo Marquez (middle, Kagawad-elect), Sheryl Ortonio Gonzales (4th from right, Kagawad-elect) and Jeremy Marquez (3rd from right, Barangay Chairman-elect) and the local COMELEC officials.

To some you readers, Tumang’s name might sound familiar. That is because back in 2019, I interviewed Tumang and published a special feature of her when she was still new as the Chairwoman of the SK of Barangay BF Homes. She was elected to her previous post in 2018 and it was only this year when the BSKE happened.

Tumang and the members of the SK of Barangay BF Homes worked hard and responsibly for over the past five years and I covered several of their activities which you can read by clicking here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here and here. To say the least, Tumang is entering the barangay council with a lot of public service rendered over the past five years.

To get to know Kagawad-elect Tumang, read my feature of her by clicking https://carlocarrasco.com/2019/07/13/meet-barangay-bf-homes-sk-chairperson-mariel-tumang/

Fake military intelligence officer arrested in ParaƱaque City

Recently in the city of ParaƱaque, a man entered a police sub-station in Barangay Tambo pretending to be a member of the Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (ISAFP) and the Military Intelligence Group (MIG) and eventually got arrested when the ID cards he submitted were found to be fake, according to a Manila Bulletin news report. This is a case of the usurpation of authority (for past cases, click here and here).

To put things in perspective, posted below is the excerpt from the Manila Bulletin news report. Some parts in boldface…

Let me end this piece by asking you readers: What do you think about this recent development? If you are a resident of ParaƱaque, are you concerned that there could be a lot of individuals in the city committing usurpation of authority who have not been caught?

ParaƱaque City finishes as the 24th Most Competitive Highly Urbanized City, dead last on Government Efficiency and Innovation (CMCI 2023)

The official results of the Cities and Municipalities Competitive Index (CMCI) for 2023 have been published and it shows ParaƱaque City did worse this time finishing as 24th Most Competitive Highly Urbanized City (HUC) of the nation and this includes finishing dead last (33rd place) among the HUCs in the categories of Innovation and Government Efficiency.

To put things in perspective, the HUCs (which covers very dense cities in the National Capital Region and the provinces) are determined by means of Competitiveness (the main category) as well as other related categories such as Economic Dynamism, Government Efficiency, Infrastructure, Resiliency and Innovation.

The 2023 CMCI showed that ParaƱaque City scored 36.301 for 24th place in Competitiveness (versus 19th place in 2022). The city’s highlight is finishing 11th place on Economic Dynamism with a score of 5.3264, 16th place on Infrastructure with 5.2753, and 26th place on Resiliency with 11.4956.

What is most notable is that ParaƱaque finished dead last among the 33 HUCs on the categories of Government Efficiency and Innovation with scores of 8.2859 and 5.9169 respectively.

How and why did ParaƱaque end up as the worst HUC on Government Efficiency and Innovation needs to be explained in detail by the local officials. I know for a fact that ParaƱaque has been a hot spot for crime but that alone does not explain the CMCI’s 2023 findings. I can only wonder how efficient the City Government of ParaƱaque has been over the past 24 months as well since the day Mayor Eric Olivarez took office. Ā

Let me end this piece by asking you readers: What do you think about this recent development? If you are a resident of ParaƱaque and had been doing transactions with the City Government, did you notice anything wrong? Has the City Government been performing sluggishly in recent times? Did transparency at the City Government weaken? What do you think should the City Government do with regards to innovation in relation to public service?
