In an effort to reduce the risk of flooding, dredging in the city has been intensified under the watch of the administration of Las Piñas City Mayor April Aguilar, according to a news article by Dredging Today.

The City Government of Las Piñas, under the leadership of Mayor April Aguilar and Vice Mayor Imelda Aguilar, is intensifying its flood mitigation initiatives through the conduct of a clearing and dredging operation in Bangkalan Creek, Barangay Almanza Uno.

“This operation is not just an environmental effort – it is a proactive measure to safeguard lives, protect properties, and keep our city resilient against climate change and extreme weather events,” CENRO Las Piñas said.

“By conducting dredging and clearing works, the City Government ensures that waterways remain open, deeper, and unobstructed, thereby reducing the risks of overflow.”

The initial dredging operations uncovered plastic bags, plastic bottles, soda cans, and other non-biodegradable materials that had been stacked up through the years.

Recently in the City of Las Piñas, the City Government celebrated over the newest honor it received for its support for environmental stewardship and sustainability, according to their social media post of February 26, 2024.

In addition, during the ceremony, City Vice Mayor April Aguilar was awarded for Las Piñas City’s substantial support to environmental sustainability initiatives by Engineer Cezar Perillo, head of the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO). The award, presented during the “Greenership: Nurturing Partnerships for a Sustainable and Greener Future” forum on February 20, 2024, acknowledges the city’s efforts in backing the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) National Capital Region’s projects.

The award underscores the city’s active engagement in promoting environmental stewardship and its commitment to sustainable urban development. Las Piñas has been instrumental in driving forward initiatives aimed at urban greening, waste management, and reducing pollution, demonstrating leadership in environmental conservation and a proactive approach to tackling ecological challenges.

This recognition during the flag-raising ceremony exhibits Las Piñas City’s enduring dedication to environmental initiatives, fostering a culture of sustainability and community involvement.

A Look at Beng Amurao’s 2019 Christmas Gift-giving to Barangay BF Homes Residents

A lot of Barangay BF Homes residents lined up for the release of Christmas gifts from former barangay chairwoman and former city councilor Beng Amurao on December 23 at Parañaque City Hall.

On the afternoon of December 23, hundreds of residents of Barangay BF Homes went home from Parañaque City Hall happy and thankful after receiving Christmas gifts in the form of consumable goods from former Barangay BF Homes chairwoman and former City Councilor Florencia “Beng” Amurao.

Specifically, Amurao confirmed to me that there were more than four hundred (400+) recipients of goods who each got bags of goods. The said bags (which contained fiesta ham, condensed milk, canned meat and others) were carefully distributed by her staff in coordination with the City Government.

This is not the first time Beng Amurao gave back to the residents of her barangay many of which have known her personally since her days as a kagawad (councilor) and as captain. For many years, I personally witnessed her Amurao’s annual Christmas gift-giving. There were times the gift-giving was done at a family-controlled property along Aguirre Avenue inside BF Homes subdivision and, these past few years, was done at the grounds of City Hall just steps outside the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) office at the ground floor.

Another look at the line of recipients.

From what I observed, I can say clearly that Beng Amurao has a heart of compassion, service and care for the people of Barangay BF Homes and her extensive track record of public service through the decades (which include legislation approved, projects fulfilled and much more) prove it. Even though she served for three consecutive terms as a City Councilor (2007-2016) serving a lot more people around the city, Amurao never forgot her community. Since leaving the City Council, she has been assisting the mayor’s office on projects related to her barangay.

Will she run again for public office in the near future? Nobody knows yet but what is clear is that the year 2022 will have the next local elections (specifically the city-level) as well as the next barangay elections.
