COVID-19 Crisis: Food supply chain program to be launched soon in Las Piñas City

Very soon the City Government of Las Piñas will launch a food supply chain program as a result of signing a key agreement with the Department of Agriculture (DA), according to a Manila Bulletin news report. This development is crucial as everyone is still living under the COVID-19 crisis and the fear of the Omicron variant generated by the mainstream media.

The Las Pinas City government signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Department of Agriculture (DA) for the launch of the Enhanced Kadiwa Inclusive Food Supply Chain Program to ensure food availability and accessibility amid the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.

Mayor Imelda Aguilar said that under the agreement, the DA will provide financial grant assistance to participating eligible organizations and local government units (LGUs) to enhance their capacities in value-adding activities in the food supply chains from aggregation, processing, packing, store, warehousing, and transport to distribution.

Aguilar said the project, under the agreement, shall focus on the implementation of two Kadiwa Stores in the city where the project aims to enable selected market vendors to have funds for the renovation and improvement of the Kadiwa store.

She said the DA shall download funds to the city which shall be granted to the Pagsasarali Talipapa Multi-purpose Cooperative and the Las Piñas Meat Dealers Association of which both organizations will receive P1 million each.

The mayor said that under the agreement, DA’s obligation through its Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Service or AMAS shall provide financial grant to the city in the amount of P2,000,000 to be funded under the Market Development Services of FY 2021 General Appropriation Act 11518.

Vice-Mayor April Aguilar said the DA’s financial grant will be used in the implementation of the “Enhanced Kadiwa ni Ani at Kita Financial Grant Assistance Program” to be released in full accordance with the approved project proposal as well as the work and financial plan contained in the agreement.

“On our side, the city’s obligation is to implement the approved project and shall see to it that it will be in accordance with the approved project objectives, standards, systems, and procedures for project implementation, and the approved Work and Financial Plan contained in the agreement,” Vice-Mayor Aguilar said.

According to the Manila Bulletin’s recent report, the Department of Health (DOH) praised the City Government of Las Piñas as a result of the local vaccination sites being clean and orderly to them. The DOH conducted an on-site inspection recently.

The Department of Health (DOH) team praised the Las Pinas City government for its clean and orderly vaccination sites during an inspection visit on Tuesday, on Nov. 30.

DOH Regional director Gloria Balboa and her team visited The Tent and SM Center where the Bayanihan Bakunahan was being conducted.

Balboa praised Mayor Imelda Aguilar for the orderly vaccination procedures in the city’s two vaccination sites.

She also thanked the vacinnees who participated in the Bayanihan, Bakunahan and told them about the importance of getting the jab against COVID-19.

Balboa urged residents to continue to be mindful of the prescribed health and safety protocols as the Omicron variant of COVID-19 has been detected in many countries.

Paul San Miguel, Public Information Office chief, said the city recorded a total of 8,786 residents who participated in the Bayanihan, Bakunahan on Nov. 29 and 30.

San Miguel said Balboa was also accompanied by Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) City Director Mary Ann Planas, City Administrator Reynaldo Balagulan, and City Health (CHO) officer-in-charge Dr. Julie Gonzales during the site visit.

The Manila Bulletin reported yesterday that the registration of the vaccination program for the general pediatric population (aged 12 to 17) in Las Piñas City has reached 45,000. That figure is already the majority of the target population of minors.

The Las Pinas City government has recorded a total of 45,000 registrants for the vaccination of the general pediatric population aged 12 to 17 years old.

Mayor Imelda Aguilar lauded the parents and guardians of the minors for heeding the call of the city government to register their children for vaccination against COVID-19.

Aguilar also thanked city residents for their full cooperation in having 45,000 registrants out of the 65,000 targeted children population for vaccination as part of the city government’s “Bakunahan sa Kabataan” program.

The mayor and Vice-Mayor April Aguilar have regularly been visiting the seven identified vaccination sites in the city to give the children as well as their parents encouragement as well as to highlight the importance of getting the jab against COVID-19.

Las Pinas City Mayor Imelda “Mel” Aguilar who is seeking a third and last term as the city’s chief executive filed her certificate of candidacy (COC) on Wednesday, Oct. 6, together with her “Tuloy ang Serbisyo” team at the local Commission on Elections (Comelec) office in the city.

Aguilar personally filed her COC before Comelec officer Atty. Jehan Marohombsar. She was joined by her daughter, April Aguilar-Nery, who is seeking her second as city vice-mayor.

The team “Tuloy ang Serbisyo” will be running under the banner of the Nacionalista Party (NP).

Aguilar said she was inspired by the legacy left behind by her late husband, former Mayor Vergel “Nene” Aguilar, and aims to provide better services to Las Piñeros.

“Given the chance to be re-elected for the third time, I will pursue the programs and services which I have already started that will benefit my constituents who deserve nothing less from the local government,” Aguilar said.

The mayor added that the COVID-19 pandemic will not be a hindrance to the platform set by the “Tuloy ang Serbisyo” team that guarantees to sustain and make identified services more accessible and available to the people.

Last week, August 20, 2021 became a sorrowful day as former Las Piñas City Mayor Vergel “Nene” Aguilar passed away which the City Government of Las Piñas confirmed. He was 74-years-old and left a legacy of public service having served as the head of the local government unit (LGU) for a grand total of eighteen years (1995-2004 and 2007-2016). His wife Imelda is the incumbent Mayor and their daughter April Aguilar-Nery is the incumbent Vice Mayor.

It is with profound sorrow that our family announces the passing of my husband and our patriarch, former Mayor Vergel “Nene” Aguilar.

At the age of 74, Nene joined our beloved Creator today, August 20, 2021, at 4:12 am, succumbing to a heart ailment after being confined at St. Luke’s Medical Center – Global City.

Nene, it pains all of us that you are no longer with us, but we know that you have accomplished your mission in this world, not only to your family and loved ones, but to the hundreds of families you have served and supported throughout your years in service.

As the current Mayor of Las Piñas, the legacy and selfless public service you have rendered as mayor for 18 years to the people of Las Piñas will serve as my inspiration. Your years as the local chief executive have led to the unprecedented growth of our city. We will miss you very much.

We invite our loved ones, friends, and all of the people of Las Piñas to remember him and celebrate his life and the love and joy he has imparted to all of us.

For the newcomers reading this, former Mayor Vergel “Nene” Aguilar led the LGU for almost twenty years. According to local history, he first became mayor at a time when Las Piñas was still a municipality. Las Piñas formally became a city on March 26, 1997 and that was within Aguilar’s first term. Under his leadership, socio-economic development followed and the new city got recognized. There is no denying that Las Piñas became progressive and continues to progress and has emerged as one of the most notable cities of South Metro Manila.

A look back at a few of the many achievements of the city under Mayor Vergel “Nene” Aguilar.

In an article published by Philippine News Agency (PNA), Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Andanar paid tribute to former Mayor Aguilar and expressed his sorrow. Posted below is an excerpt…

In a press statement, Andanar said it pains him to lose Aguilar who had been a father figure to him.

“It’s with great sorrow, sadness, and pain that I grieve the loss of a father figure like former Las Piñas Mayor Vergel “Nene” Aguilar who passed away today, August 20, 2021, due to a heart ailment,” said Andanar.

Aguilar’s passing was announced by his wife, incumbent Mayor Imelda Aguilar, through a statement posted on the official Facebook page of City of Las Piñas.

Aguilar, 74, passed away on Friday morning at St. Luke’s Medical Center at Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.

Andanar remembered Aguilar, whom he fondly called “Papa Nene,” for the latter’s “unselfish public service, commitment, and dedication to lead and generate great changes” in Las Piñas City.

He also hailed Aguilar for giving “unparalleled” progress to Las Piñas City and its people.

“You have touched the lives of so many people, but your silent demeanor was a gushing river of wisdom and affection that brought happiness and, most of all, love to our small family,” Andanar said. “Papa Nene, you may have left us in this world and have joined our Creator, but the memories and teachings you have shared with us all will be remembered perpetually.”

He left behind four daughters — Las Piñas Vice Mayor April Aguilar-Nery, Dr. Aivee Aguilar-Teo, Alelee Aguilar-Andanar, and Anne Aguilar.

He was also Senator Cynthia Villar’s brother.

He was a property developer before entering public service in 1992. He then served as mayor of Las Piñas City for six terms, first from 1995 to 2004, and from 2007 to 2016.

His father Dr. Filemon Aguilar, was also a former Las Piñas mayor.

During his term, Las Piñas was recognized as one of the best-managed cities in the country, according to the city’s official website.

National and international awards, including the United Nations Award for Environmental Protection, were handed out to the city under his term.

SM Southmall, a major shopping and lifestyle destination located along Alabang-Zapote Road in Las Piñas City, recently received its Safety Seal and Vice Mayor April Aguilar-Nery was present during the inauguration ceremony at the mall.

SM Southmall has been awarded with the safety seal. With Las Piñas rolling out the safety seal inspection in the region, SM Southmall is the first mall city to receive the seal.

Present in the inauguration were the Vice Mayor of Las Pinas City, Hon. April T. Aguilar; Chief of the Business Permits and Licensing Office Mr. Willy Gaerlan; Bernice Baculi, AVP of Operations for SM Southmall and Sally Chandumal, Mall Manager of SM Southmall.

“I am very pleased to be here in SM Southmall for the awarding of the safety seal certificate wherein SM Southmall is the first to pass the safety seal inspection conducted by our team,” says BPLIO Head Willy Gaerlan, “we hope we will maintain the standard we’ve already received.”

SM Southmall continues to excel in its safety and sanitation protocols with temperature checks, one-way signs, social distancing rules, alfresco dining, safety protocol officers and constant hygiene maintenance to ensure the safety of its customers.

In my personal observation, SM Southmall and SM shopping malls, literally, went the extra mile in keeping their facilities sanitized, cleaned and orderly. As for what the Safety Seal is, it is the indication that the establishment is compliant in terms of the standard safety protocols and other related requirements. In nearby Muntinlupa City, the Alabang Town Center (ATC) was certified with the Safety Seal and other malls in the city applied for the seal.

Going back to Las Piñas City, the Safety Seal continues to make its presence felt even more. Already offices in Las Piñas City Hall got certified with the Safety Seal making them safe for people to visit. The City Government has a team dedicated on handling Safety Seal certifications.

Sometime in the near future, the City Government of Las Piñas will eventually reach its target of establishing twenty vaccination sites within their jurisdiction as Vice Mayor April Aguilar-Nery confirmed via Manila Bulletin that new sites will be set up in Barangay Manuyo Uno and Barangay Talon 5.

The Las Piñas City government has put up more additional sites for COVID-19 vaccination to accommodate the growing number of residents who want to get inoculated.

Vice Mayor April Aguilar said the city is committed to vaccinate 447,000 residents out of its more than 600,000 population to achieve herd immunity.

To date, some 211,274 residents belonging to A1 to A5 categories have already been vaccinated in 18 vaccination sites in 20 barangays, including three malls and an events place.

Aguilar said two more vaccination sites will be put up in Barangay Manuyo Uno and Barangay Talon 5.

Of the vaccinated residents, persons with comorbidities or those belonging to Category A3 registered the highest number, followed by Category A4 or frontliners and uniformed personnel, senior citizens or Category A2, Category A1 or those in health services, and Category A5 or indigent population.

The city’s massive vaccination was lauded by Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Undersecretary for Mindanao Affairs and Special Concerns Marjorie Jalosjos, calling it “properly managed”.

The other day, the City of Las Piñas added another honor to its list achievements as their Mayor Imelda Aguilar was honored by the Regional Peace and Order Council-National Capital Region (RPOC-NCR) with a mark of recognition. It was accepted by her and Vice Mayor April Aguilar-Nery.

COVID-19 Crisis: Las Piñas City vaccination sites inspected by DILG undersecretary Jalosjos

In a very recent report by the Manila Bulletin, an undersecretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) visited one of the vaccination sites of Las Pinas City although the City Government’s own Facebook page showed that two vaccination sites were visited – one at SM Southmall (pictured in Manila Bulletin’s report) and the other at University of Perpetual Help System DALTA Gym-1.

Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Undersecretary for Mindanao Affairs and Special Concerns Marjorie Jalosjos visited on Monday, June 21, a vaccination site in Las Pinas City and lauded it for a very organized rollout of vaccines to city residents.

She lauded the Las Pinas City government for having 18 vaccination sites that are properly managed.

Vice Mayor April Aguilar said the city is looking for more sites for vaccination if the need arises.

Aguilar said the local government is committed to achieve herd immunity through a massive vaccination program.

She bared that once the vaccines are delivered to the city, the local government will promptly schedule the vaccine rollout in the 18 vaccination sites located around the city.

COVID-19 Crisis: Over 100,000 residents of Las Piñas City vaccinated

As the City Government of Las Piñas continued with expanding sites around the city while vaccinating patients under the categories of A1, A2, A3 and A4, it should be noted that over 100,000 city residents have officially been vaccinated (since vaccination operations first started months ago).

This is according to a news report published by the Manila Bulletin with details from Vice Mayor April Aguilar-Nery. For the precise details, posted below is an excerpt from the said report. Some parts in boldface…

The Las Pinas City Health Office (CHO) recorded a total of 101,059 residents who were given their first and second doses of vaccines against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Vice-Mayor April Aguilar said for the first dose, a total of 70,770 individuals were given Sinovac, AstraZeneca, Pfzer and Sputnik vaccines while 30, 389 finished their second dose.

Aguilar said of the 101,059 individuals composed of health workers, senior citizens and adults with comorbidities, 1,281 belong to the A4 category.

The report also states that the newest vaccination site at The Village Square Alabang can serve around three hundred patients per day. The Vice Mayor reiterated that walk-ins are not allowed at the vaccination sites as it is part of the police. This was also meant to avoid overcrowding (remember the Pfizer launch in Parañaque City?).
