Recently in the City of Las Piñas, an effort to spread awareness about the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) – the virus that leads to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) – was launched by the health department under the City Government, according to a Manila Bulletin news report.
To put things in perspective, posted below is an excerpt the Manila Bulletin news report. Some parts in boldface…
The Las Piñas City Health Office (CHO) has launched an awareness campaign on the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) as it recorded more than 1,500 cases of infection in the city.
During the “Serbisyo Las Piñero” health edition program of the city government hosted by Dr. Dhaniel Calma, CHO medical director, Dra. Maria Alinea Salatan, HIV/AIDS control program medical coordinator; and Jaydee Trinidad, nurse, discussed the number of HIV cases in the city.
Trinidad said the Las Piñas Social Hygiene Clinic in Barangay Almanza Uno logged a total of 1,536 HIV cases in June 2023.
He said the highest number of recorded infections came from the working group (746 or 49 percent) and from the youth (435 or 23 percent).
Salatan said the youngest patient afflicted with HIV being treated at their clinic is a 16-year-old.
She said the city social hygiene clinic is conducting an HIV/AIDS awareness campaign by teaching individuals to practice safe sex to prevent getting the disease.
They are offering free HIV testing from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. They extend the testing time for the working group from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Salatan said they are also conducting free HIV testing for pregnant women to ensure their babies are free from the virus.
Let me end this piece by asking you readers: If you are a resident of Las Piñas City, what is your reaction to this development? Are you concerned that HIV or AIDS cases in the city are gradually multiplying? Are there many people in your local community who are willing to get tested for HIV or AIDS?
