Recently in the progressive City of Muntinlupa, the City Government announced that local senior citizens will be administered with bivalent COVID-19 vaccine shots after the local health workers, according to a Manila Bulletin news report.

The Muntinlupa City government will administer the Covid-19 Vaccine Pfizer Bivalent as a third booster shot to senior citizens after hospital workers.

This was announced by City Health Office chief Dr. Juancho Bunyi on July 3 during the flag-raising ceremony at the Muntinlupa City Hall.

The city government rolled out the administration of the Covid-19 Vaccine Pfizer Bivalent or the Tozinameran+Famtozinameran (Comimaty Original/Omicron BA.4-5), to healthcare workers in hospitals on June 23.

“Pag nasaturate na po natin ang lahat ng healthcare workers na nagtatrabaho sa hospital, ibababa na po natin yan sa A2 category. Eto po yung mga senior citizens (If we finish saturating all healthcare workers working in hospitals, we will bring it down to the A2 category. These are the senior citizens),” said Bunyi.

At the city-run Ospital ng Muntinlupa in Alabang, a total of 62 healthcare workers have already been given the third booster shot.

Bunyi said the city government has already delivered the vaccine to private hospitals.

The Department of Health’s Metro Manila Center for Health Development initially allocated 726 vials or 4,356 doses for Muntinlupa for A1 or health workers in hospitals.

In the progressive city of Muntinlupa, several local senior citizens and fishermen experienced the joy of Christmas as City Government distributed rice as Christmas gifts, according to a Manila Bulletin news report. Mayor Ruffy Biazon led the distribution.

The Muntinlupa City government, led by Mayor Ruffy Biazon, distributed rice to senior citizens and fishermen as Christmas gifts.

Biazon said the distribution of rice to senior citizens in different barangays started on Dec. 12.

“Lahat ng barangay ay mayroon pong schedule, at araw-araw po ito hanggang matapos ang distribution. Makipag-ugnayan sa senior citizen organizations sa inyong lugar kung mayroong katanungan (All barangays have a schedule and this will be daily until the distribution is finished. Please coordinate with the senior citizen organization in your area if you have questions),” said Biazon in a Facebook post.

According to Office for Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA) chief Zenaida Celestino, the rice distribution is held yearly as part of the “Pamaskong Handog” to the elderly.

The mayor said OSCA and different city departments are working hand-in-hand to ensure the orderly distribution of the rice.

In addition, the city government celebrated the Araw ng Mangingisda (Fishermen Day) through the Lake Management Office (LMO).

About 1,000 fishermen joined the celebration.

LMO head Herminio dela Cruz said this is one way for the city government to bring together the fishermen and give them happiness.

Each fisherman received five kilos of rice and raffle prizes were also given away.

This past weekend (Saturday night of December 3, 2022) inside Tahanan Village, Barangay BF Homes, Parañaque City, the Century Club of Tahanan, Inc. (CCTI) organized its first Christmas party in years and it attracted a huge reception from its members and guests, and several top officials of the City Government of Parañaque – including the new Mayor and Vice Mayor – attended and greeted the constituents. Indeed, the city, its communities and the nation are gradually moving forward from the downturn of COVID-19 and there is greater confidence among the people to gather and celebrate Christmas together now that restrictions have eased a lot.

According to CCTI president Florencia Umali, there were around one hundred fifty seniors who attended. Around two hundred people in total attended. The party was held at the covered basketball court located a short walk away from the village clubhouse.

“After two years of pandemic, (the) people (were) happy to see their neighbors and friends,” Umali stated.

Having been present at the party myself, the atmosphere was festive, lots of people enjoyed the food and drinks as well as the music, dancing and raffle draw. Compared to what I attended in 2019, the Saturday night Christmas party atmosphere has this strong sense of normality. Guests were more confident to socialize with each other.

As with their Christmas part of 2019, the CCTI’s credibility as a private senior citizen’s club of Tahanan Village was realized yet again as City Mayor Eric Olivarez, Vice Mayor Joan Villafuerte-Densing and City Councilors Rico Golez, Nina Sotto, Bong Benzon plus former Councilor Wahoo Sotto graced the party.

The City Government officials interacted with guests and delivered their special greetings. Noticeably, new Councilor Nina Sotto gave a slew of public service updates while new Vice Mayor Villafuerte-Densing admitted that this was just her third time to be in Tahanan Village given the fact that she is based in District 1 of the city (note Tahanan Village and Barangay BF Homes are part of District 2). New Mayor Eric Olivarez delivered his remarks to the guests and danced to entertain everyone.

When asked about future activities or events of the CCTI, Umali confirmed that there will be a Valentine’s party for senior citizens.

Looking back at the Christmas party of CCTI, it was really nice to see the return to normalcy as well as the spirit of Christmas getting celebrated inside Tahanan Village which is the premier residential community of Barangay BF Homes. If you are a resident of Metro Manila, have you been enjoying the additional freedom of movement and spending more time inside commercial establishments under the Alert Level 1 status that has been in effect since March 1, 2022? Whatever you do, do not forget to follow health protocols. Equally important, you must remember your current status of vaccination and if you are due for a 2nd booster shot (or the 4th shot if you have already received three doses of COVID-19 vaccines).

Even as the Philippines has a little over 10 million people who got their booster shots (3rd shot), the 2nd booster shot (meant for those who received three doses previously) is already being talked about according to recent GMA Network news report.

Infectious disease expert Dr. Rontgene Solante on Monday said the second booster shot is only recommended for senior citizens and immunocompromised for now, and not yet for the younger or general population.

“For the more vulnerable population, the 60 years old and above, and immunocompromised, ito ‘yung ina-ano natin ngayon na sana mabigyan ng pangalawang booster para talaga ang protection dito is against the severe form of COVID,” Solante said in a radio interview.

[We are pushing for a second booster shot for the more vulnerable population like the 60 years old and above and the immunocompromised, so they could get protected against the severe form of COVID-19.]

Solante then explained that the health experts’ advice remains for those who have completed their primary vaccine series to get one booster shot after three to six months.

“For the younger population, ‘yung tinatawag nating immunocompetent, I don’t think we need additional booster. With the ability of this vaccine to protect us against severe infection, alam naman talaga natin na pwede rin tayong mahawahan pero ang importante nito, hindi tayo mag-severe [we know that we can still be infected but the important thing is that it’s not severe],” he said.

“So I think, the first booster for the younger population may be enough. Wala pa tayong [we don’t have yet] recommendation for a second booster,” he added.

Health Undersecretary and National Vaccination Operations Center chairperson Dr. Myrna Cabotaje said on Saturday that vaccinations at local government units nationwide slowed down the past week, with some people losing the sense of urgency when it comes to booster shots.

This is why the priority for the fourth wave of the “Bayanihan, Bakunahan” national vaccination drive will be senior citizens who have not yet completed their primary dose series and those set for booster shots.

“Napaka-importante especially with the vulnerable population na sana pupunta kayo sa vaccination centers. ‘Yung hindi pa nagpa-booster, magpa-booster na kayo. ‘Yung hindi pa nagpabakuna, ito na ‘yung panahon na talagang kailangan na tayong magpabakuna,” Solante added.

[It is very important especially for the vulnerable population to go to vaccination centers. Those who have not received their booster shots yet, get it now. Those who have not been vaccinated, this is the time when we really need to be vaccinated.]

Currently, the Philippine government is administering third doses to senior citizens and immunocompromised individuals, while booster shots are given to those who completed the primary doses–single for Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine, double for the other bands.

Here in the Philippines, senior citizens are a priority group of people for COVID-19 vaccines and in order to avail of such vaccines, registration is the first step (which goes the same for others). Once the registration has been done, the local organizers will have to maintain the records, look closely and sort out the senior citizens whom they will contact and inform them of the slots scheduled for them.

While Internet access is widely available in the Philippines, there are still senior citizens who cannot get themselves registered digitally (online registration) not only because of the lack of access (or lack of hardware) but because they are not familiar with the digital ways and processes. In the City of Las Piñas, vaccine registration can be done digitally or manually. Check out the details right here. If other cities don’t offer manual registration at all, then their senior citizens who have no Internet access or are not oriented with computers/gadgets are in a major disadvantage and may have been left behind.

In relation to this, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) urged local government units (LGUs) to come up with ideas to help the disadvantaged senior citizens get registered. Posted below is the excerpt from the Philippine News Agency (PNA) article. Some parts in bold…

Local government units (LGUs) should find a way to register seniors, who are non-tech savvy and without access to the internet, for a Covid-19 vaccination schedule, Interior Secretary Eduardo Año said.

“The LGUs must help our seniors who do not know how to use high-tech gadgets. Find the ways on how to register them immediately even manually so that they can avail themselves of the vaccines,” Año said in a text message to the Philippine News Agency (PNA) Wednesday.

While many older adults have access to the internet and are tech-savvy, others are not and have a hard time navigating vaccination registration websites set up by LGUs.

“Kung kinakailangan i-house-to-house sila (If needed, LGUs should conduct house-to-house visitations to register them) then so be it,” Año said.

Since the start of the vaccination rollout last March, among the groups prioritized for inoculation are senior citizens or under the A2 category.

So there you have it! DILG Eduardo Año made a pitch to the LGUs to literally go the extra mile to help the senior citizens who could not get registered digitally. It should be noted that there are some senior citizens who are bedridden or are physically disadvantaged and could not get themselves registered online. Also remember that some websites designed for online registration might not be user-friendly enough for senior citizens and others who are just starting using the Internet.

Reaching the target number of residents from priority groups and due to the sensitive cold-chain management, the City Government of Muntinlupa announced yesterday that it has ended its rollout for Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines.

The Muntinlupa City Health Office was set to finish inoculating healthcare frontliners, senior citizens, and persons with comorbidities with COVAX-donated Pfizer vaccines yesterday at Ayala Malls South Park, Alabang.

The vaccines were exclusively administered at Ayala Malls South Park, the only venue approved by the Department of Health (DOH) due to handling requirements, from May 14-18. The local health office targeted to vaccinate 3,510 individuals from the A1, A2, and A3 priority groups using Pfizer vaccines.

On May 13, Muntinlupa received 1,170 vials (7,020 doses) of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines from the national government. The remaining vials will be stored in the City Government’s partner storage facility Royal Cargo Logistics Center in Barangay Cupang as second dose allocation of vaccinated residents.

The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine was administered as a series of two doses 3 weeks apart. Inoculated residents will receive their second dose in June. The Philippines expects 2.2 million doses of the American-made vaccines through COVAX facility of the World Health Organization by end of May, according to vaccine czar Carlito Galvez Jr.

Further, Muntinlupa CHO will continue to inoculate remaining members of priority groups using AstraZeneca and Sinovac Life Sciences’ CoronaVac. On May 11, the national government delivered an additional 16,800 vials of AstraZeneca and 31,200 vials of Sinovac to Muntinlupa.

The City Government urged residents to register online in the city’s COVID-19 Vaccination Registration System via www.vaccine.muntinlupacity.gov.ph/muncovac to avoid crowding in vaccination areas.

The public is reminded that walk-ins the city’s major vaccination sites including Ayala Malls South Park, Filinvest Steel Parking, SM Muntinlupa, and Sucat Covered Court will not be accommodated. Only those who are registered online will be given schedule in the major vaccination sites and will be notified via SMS.

Muntinlupa City has 12,359 confirmed cases with 10,976 recoveries, 1,057 active cases, 314 reported deaths, 88 suspect cases, and 1391 probable cases as of May 17.

Here’s a quick look at the China virus situation in Las Piñas City. The Manila Bulletin reported recently that almost 7,000 people in the said city got vaccinated specifically with the China-sourced COVID-19 vaccine.

For transparency, below is an excerpt from the Manila Bulletin’s April 14, 2021 report. Key details in bold…

A total of 6911 individuals received the China-made Sinovac vaccine since the start of the Las Piñas City government’s vaccination rollout last March with the theme of “Ligtas na Las Piñero, Lahat Bakunado.”

The City Health Office (CHO) reported to Mayor Imelda Aguilar that a total of 3902 frontline workers composed of doctors, nurses, and other health workers coming from public and private hospitals, including clinics, already received their Sinovac jabs.

A total of 1,745 senior citizens have also been vaccinated in the city. The inoculation for the other senior citizens will continue after the Department of Health (DOH) approved the use of Sinovac.

The report also showed that a total of 1264 persons with comorbidities also received their first dose of vaccines.

The Public Information Office said the city government is continuing to conduct vaccination simultaneously at the city’s 10 vaccination sites.

For the newcomers reading this, it was confirmed previously that Las Piñas senior citizens got vaccinated with AstraZeneca vaccines (click here and here) which the City Government already paid for. Why AstraZeneca was not mentioned in Manila Bulletin’s report is curious.

Meanwhile, local citizens reading this who wish to avail of COVID-19 vaccines are encouraged to get themselves registered with the City Government by means of digital method (QR code scanning, Google account to be used) or the manual method. At least 2,579 senior citizens from Muntinlupa City received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine while the number of inoculated members of A3 priority group is now at 97%, according to a report from Muntinlupa City Health Office (CHO).

As of April 13, Muntinlupa CHO recorded 2,579 senior citizens, comprising of 47.8% of the target population, who were vaccinated in 12 local vaccination sites. Of the total number of inoculated A2 members, 1,606 received Sinovac while 973 were vaccinated with AstraZeneca.

For members of A3 priority group or persons with comorbidities, 5,250 individuals have received their COVID-19 vaccine, of which 5,153 were inoculated with Sinovac and 97 received AstraZeneca.

There are 12,952 vaccinated Muntinlupa residents from A1 – A3 priority groups as of April 13. Recently, Muntinlupa CHO announced the roll-out of CoronoVac (Sinovac) among senior citizens starting April 12.

Among the first senior citizens in Muntinlupa who received their COVID-19 vaccine was former Press Secretary and former Muntinlupa Mayor Ignacio “Toting” Bunye (center), 70 y/o, last April 13 at Muntinlupa National High School – Tunasan Annex. Joining Bunye were Public Information Officer Tez Navarro (left) and Muntinlupa City Technical Institute director Francisco Santella (right), both senior citizens. As of April 13, Muntinlupa City Health Office recorded 2,579 senior citizens, comprising of 47.8% of the target population, who were vaccinated in 12 local vaccination sites. Vaccination sites in Muntinlupa include Tunasan Elementary School (ES), Victoria ES, Muntinlupa National High School – Annex, Muntinlupa National HS Main, Poblacion ES (SV3), Pedro E. Diaz HS, Ayala Alabang Health Center, Cupang Health Center, Buli ES, Sucat Covered Court, and Bagong Silang Elementary School. Recently, Muntinlupa City Mayor Jaime Fresnedi received his first jab of COVID-19 vaccine after President Rodrigo Duterte allowed the inoculation of mayors in “high risk” cities and towns.

The local exec urges fellow senior citizens and qualified residents who are members of the priority groups to avail the vaccination services of the government for them to have an added protection against the adverse effects of COVID-19.

He also encouraged the public to pre-register in the city’s COVID-19 vaccination registration through www.vaccine.muntinlupacity.gov.ph/muncovac and to still strictly observe health protocols such as frequent hand-washing, wearing of face masks and face shields, and physical distancing.

Further, Muntinlupa City started distributing the emergency subsidy from the national government to families affected by the enhanced community quarantine in NCR Plus. As of April 13, Muntinlupa City has 9,246 confirmed cases with 7,165 recoveries, 1,838 active cases, 243 reported deaths, 191 suspect cases, and 781 probable cases.

COVID-19 Crisis: Muntinlupa City starts vaccinating seniors with Sinovac, completes inoculation of healthcare workers

Following the approval of the Food and Drugs and Administration on the vaccination of senior citizens with Sinovac, the City Government of Muntinlupa officially started its roll-out among seniors yesterday.

The Muntinlupa City Health Office announced the roll-out of CoronoVac (Sinovac) among senior citizens starting April 12 in 14 initial vaccine centers in the city.

Vaccination sites in Muntinlupa for A2 members (senior citizens) include Tunasan Elementary School (ES), Victoria ES, Muntinlupa National High School – Annex, Muntinlupa National HS Main, Poblacion ES (SV3), Putatan ES, Soldiers Hills ES, Lakeview Integrated School, Bayanan ES Main, Pedro E. Diaz HS, Cupang ES, Cupang Health Center, Buli ES, and Sucat Covered Court. The City Government targets to inoculate at least 44,000 senior citizens in Muntinlupa.

As of April 10, Muntinlupa CHO has received 20,317 COVID-19 vaccines from the national government, of which 20,063 are Sinovac and 254 are AstraZeneca. There are only remaining 13,964 vials, of which 13,921 are Sinovac and 43 are AstraZeneca.

Further, the vaccination of healthcare workers from A1 priority group was completed with 5,123 (100%) medical frontliners who were inoculated, of which 2,145 received Sinovac and 2,978 were vaccinated with AstraZeneca. While 4,189 (77.6%) individuals received the vaccine from A3 priority group (persons with comorbidities), of which 4,100 were given Sinovac and 89 received AstraZeneca.

Recently, Muntinlupa City Mayor Jaime Fresnedi received his first jab of COVID-19 vaccine after President Rodrigo Duterte allowed the inoculation of mayors in “high risk” cities and towns.

COVID-19 Crisis: More senior citizens of Las Piñas City vaccinated with AstraZeneca

The City Government of Las Piñas confirmed that more of their local senior citizens got injected with the AstraZeneca vaccine for COVID-19 (China Virus) recently at the designated vaccination sites at CAA Elementary School Main, Almanza Uno Covered Court, Pamplona Elementary School Central. No specific numbers were revealed, however.

For comparison, the April 1 launch of vaccinating local senior citizens resulted 300 who were injected with the same vaccine at the sites at Verdant Covered Court, Bambusteum Cover Court and Almanza Dos Covered Court.

It is recalled that this past January, the City Government signed an agreement with AstraZeneca for the procurement of 300,000 doses of their vaccine. Within South Metro Manila, AstraZeneca also provides the same vaccine to the City Government of Muntinlupa (read this and this).

On the national level, it has been announced that the use of AstraZeneca vaccine on persons younger than sixty-years-old has been suspended. For insight, below is an excerpt from the Philippine News Agency (PNA) article…

The Department of Health (DOH) on Thursday adopted the recommendation of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to temporarily suspend the use of AstraZeneca vaccines for individuals aged below 60 years old, following reports of rare cases of blood clots with low platelets detected in some individuals inoculated with the vaccine.

“We are aware of the recommendation of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) to list blood clots as very rare side effects of the AstraZeneca vaccine. While we have not seen such incidents in the country, the FDA has recommended to temporarily suspend the use of the vaccine for persons below 60 years old as we await results of the review being done by our local experts, as well as the official guidance of the WHO,” FDA Director General Rolando Enrique Domingo said in a news release.

Health authorities assured the public that experts are reviewing information related to this new development to craft appropriate recommendations on the vaccine’s use.

Meanwhile, Las Piñas citizens who wish to avail of COVID-19 vaccines are encouraged to get themselves registered with the City Government by means of digital method (QR code scanning, Google account to be used) or the manual method.
