COVID-19 Crisis: Construction of 36-bed modular hospital in Las Piñas City progressing

According to a Manila Bulletin news report, the construction of a modular hospital designed to provide additional bed space as part of the Las Piñas General Hospital and Satellite Trauma Center (LPGH-STC) in Barangay Pulanglupa 1 in Las Piñas City is progressing and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is involved. The said project was inspected recently by DPWH Secretary Mark Villar and his sister Las Piñas City Representative Camille Villar.

What exactly will the new project do in relation to the COVID-19 crisis and the City of Las Piñas? To put things in perspective, posted below is an excerpt from the news report. Some parts in boldface…

Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Mark A. Villar recently inspected the ongoing construction of a modular hospital being undertaken by the DPWH to aid in the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) program of Las Piñas City.

Villar, together with his sister and Las Piñas Rep. Camille A. Villar, checked the project which is being implemented inside the Las Piñas General Hospital and Satellite Trauma Center (LPGH-STC) at the Bernabe Compound, Diego Cera Ave, Pulanglupa I.

“Our team from the DPWH Las Piñas-Muntinlupa District Engineering Office has so far accomplished 90 percent of the facility complete with ventilation systems, oxygen lines, and air condition units,” said Secretary Villar.

“We are building a modular hospital capable of accommodating 36 COVID-19 patients. This will hopefully bring relief, decongesting the existing facilities of LPGH-STC so they can focus on treating severe cases or other non-COVID-19 patients,” said Secretary Villar.

The report ended by stating that the new modular hospital is expected to not only be completed but also open today – June 24, 2021. Its construction began in April 2021.

COVID-19 Crisis: 40 million doses of Pfizer vaccine coming to the Philippines

As the nationwide count of COVID-19 vaccine jabs surpassed 8,000,000, a staggering supply of 40,000,000 vaccine doses from Pfizer will come into the country within this year. This is the result of a signed agreement between Pfizer and National Task Force against Covid-19 chief implementer Secretary Carlito Galvez, Jr. according to an article published by the Philippine News Agency (PNA) yesterday.

To put things into perspective, posted below is an excerpt from PNA’s article. Some parts in boldface…

The Philippine government has made the biggest vaccine procurement for 2021 with the signing of a supply agreement for 40 million doses of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines.

This was announced by the National Task Force against Covid-19 chief implementer Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. on Sunday.

“We are very happy to report that the government and the management of Pfizer have finally concluded our negotiations. (Health) Secretary (Francisco) Duque and I signed yesterday (Saturday) the supply agreement for the biggest and most decisive deal we had for 2021,” Galvez said.

“I would like to thank my colleagues from the Philippine vaccine negotiating team from the Department of Finance and our multilateral partner for tirelessly working to secure these much-needed shots that will benefit 20 million Filipinos,” he added

The vaccine czar said the deliveries of 40 million doses of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines will begin “after eight weeks starting August”, to be delivered in bulk.

“The vaccine demand has begun to ease up for many big and rich countries, as most of them have already acquired more than enough vaccines for their population and have vaccinated many of their citizens. This has allowed the manufacturer to commit to us that deliveries, though still to be made in tranches, will be in bulk,” he pointed out.

The procurement of the 40 million vaccine doses will be financed through a multilateral arrangement with the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Galvez explained that loan funds from multilateral partners such as the ADB follows a direct disbursement scheme wherein payments are paid directly by the fund manager to the vaccine manufacturer.

“Through this scheme, the Filipino people can be assured that our transactions on vaccine procurement will be transparent, as the funds will not pass through the hands of any government official or agency,” he emphasized.

With the latest supply agreement, the Philippines has now secured the delivery of 113 million doses from five manufacturers namely, Sinovac with 26 million doses, Sputnik V with 10 million doses, 20 million doses from Moderna, 17 million doses from AstraZeneca, and 40 million doses from Pfizer.

The COVAX Facility has also committed to deliver a total of 44 million doses this year, bringing to 157 million doses the total number of doses secured by the Philippines.

Mathematically and theoretically, 40 million Pfizer doses can be used to vaccinate 20 million first-timers and provide for each and every one of them the 2nd dose. How exactly will those future vaccines from Pfizer will be distributed to the local citizens has yet to be determined as of this writing.

It should be noted that recently, the City Government of Muntinlupa announced a reduction of capacity for vaccinating patients per site due to tight supply of vaccines. Over in the City of Las Piñas, an incentive program designed to encourage locals to get vaccinated was launched and in recent times the number of citizens vaccinated grew tremendously. Ultimately the supply of COVID-19 vaccines for the Philippines remains a sensitive issue.

This is not the first time Pfizer vaccines became available here in the Philippines. Take a look back at the Pfizer launch in Parañaque City.

Let me end this piece by asking you readers: Does the newly signed agreement of securing 40 million vaccines from Pfizer encourage you to get registered and join the line to get vaccinated? Are you very choosy when it comes to the different brands of vaccines? Why?

You may answer in the comments below. If you prefer to answer privately, you may do so by sending me a direct message online.

COVID-19 Crisis: 136,000+ Las Piñas residents vaccinated (as of June 14, 2021)

According to a news report by the Manila Bulletin, the local COVID-19 vaccination program of Las Piñas City has been picking up (citing Las Piñas City Representative and House Deputy Speaker Camille Villar) as over 136,000 residents have been vaccinated as of June 14, 2021. It should be noted that Representative Villar initiated an incentive program to encourage city residents to get vaccinated and the number of local residents vaccinated exceeded the 100,000 mark recently.

For relevance, watch this news video that involves Representative Villar and her program…

To put things in perspective, posted below is an excerpt from the Manila Bulletin’s report. Some parts in boldface…

Citing the latest data from the City Health Office, Deputy Speaker and Las Piñas City Camille Villar said the vaccination program in the city has continued to pick up.

Villar said that as of June 14, 136,733 of the city’s population have already received the jab. The city has a population of nearly 600,000, it was learned.

“We continue to encourage our kababayans to get themselves vaccinated to help protect them against COVID-19 and the threats of new variants,” said Villar.

The health office said there has been a 35.3% increase from the 101,059 total administered doses on June 8.

Further, 102,742 people have been vaccinated with a first dose, a 45.2% jump from 70,770 a week ago. Those vaccinated with the second dose rose by 12.2% to 33,991 from 30,289.

The local government started vaccinating economic frontliners or those under the A4 priority group last week as more vaccines are being deployed.

“These figures represent our relentless efforts toward reminding everyone about the positive effects of vaccination which gives full protection to everyone,” said the House leader.

Villar, who started a vaccine incentive program dubbed “May Bahay sa Bakuna” to boost inoculation rates within her constituency, also expressed gratitude to everyone who came forward in various vaccination sites which may have resulted in lower infection rates.

In other local developments, Robinsons Place Las Piñas along Alabang-Zapote Road became the city’s 18th vaccination site. Also the City Government announced a 4th method to help local residents get registered by means of using an app. See the visual references below.

Any Las Piñas resident who has yet to get registered for free COVID-19 vaccines can learn the ways (4 methods) by clicking here. Anyone who is ready and willing to register online can click bit.ly/LasPiñasVaccination

Let me end this piece by asking you readers: If you are an unvaccinated Las Piñas resident, does Congresswoman Villar’s incentive program convince you to come out, get registered and line up for the free COVID-19 vaccine in your city? Are the house, consumable goods and motorcycles offered through said program very enticing to you personally? Knowing that a new method of registration is now in effect, does this encourage you to get registered?

If you are still unwilling to get vaccinated, what exactly are you afraid of? Do you have a phobia of needles? Did you hear too much about the potential side effects of the vaccines? Are you too scared to get out of your home because of COVID-19?

How exactly do you want your local officials to help you?
