Former Las Piñas City Mayor Vergel “Nene” Aguilar (1947-2021)

Last week, August 20, 2021 became a sorrowful day as former Las Piñas City Mayor Vergel “Nene” Aguilar passed away which the City Government of Las Piñas confirmed. He was 74-years-old and left a legacy of public service having served as the head of the local government unit (LGU) for a grand total of eighteen years (1995-2004 and 2007-2016). His wife Imelda is the incumbent Mayor and their daughter April Aguilar-Nery is the incumbent Vice Mayor.

It is with profound sorrow that our family announces the passing of my husband and our patriarch, former Mayor Vergel “Nene” Aguilar.

At the age of 74, Nene joined our beloved Creator today, August 20, 2021, at 4:12 am, succumbing to a heart ailment after being confined at St. Luke’s Medical Center – Global City.

Nene, it pains all of us that you are no longer with us, but we know that you have accomplished your mission in this world, not only to your family and loved ones, but to the hundreds of families you have served and supported throughout your years in service.

As the current Mayor of Las Piñas, the legacy and selfless public service you have rendered as mayor for 18 years to the people of Las Piñas will serve as my inspiration. Your years as the local chief executive have led to the unprecedented growth of our city. We will miss you very much.

We invite our loved ones, friends, and all of the people of Las Piñas to remember him and celebrate his life and the love and joy he has imparted to all of us.

For the newcomers reading this, former Mayor Vergel “Nene” Aguilar led the LGU for almost twenty years. According to local history, he first became mayor at a time when Las Piñas was still a municipality. Las Piñas formally became a city on March 26, 1997 and that was within Aguilar’s first term. Under his leadership, socio-economic development followed and the new city got recognized. There is no denying that Las Piñas became progressive and continues to progress and has emerged as one of the most notable cities of South Metro Manila.

In an article published by Philippine News Agency (PNA), Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Andanar paid tribute to former Mayor Aguilar and expressed his sorrow. Posted below is an excerpt…

In a press statement, Andanar said it pains him to lose Aguilar who had been a father figure to him.

“It’s with great sorrow, sadness, and pain that I grieve the loss of a father figure like former Las Piñas Mayor Vergel “Nene” Aguilar who passed away today, August 20, 2021, due to a heart ailment,” said Andanar.

Aguilar’s passing was announced by his wife, incumbent Mayor Imelda Aguilar, through a statement posted on the official Facebook page of City of Las Piñas.

Aguilar, 74, passed away on Friday morning at St. Luke’s Medical Center at Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.

Andanar remembered Aguilar, whom he fondly called “Papa Nene,” for the latter’s “unselfish public service, commitment, and dedication to lead and generate great changes” in Las Piñas City.

He also hailed Aguilar for giving “unparalleled” progress to Las Piñas City and its people.

“You have touched the lives of so many people, but your silent demeanor was a gushing river of wisdom and affection that brought happiness and, most of all, love to our small family,” Andanar said. “Papa Nene, you may have left us in this world and have joined our Creator, but the memories and teachings you have shared with us all will be remembered perpetually.”

He left behind four daughters — Las Piñas Vice Mayor April Aguilar-Nery, Dr. Aivee Aguilar-Teo, Alelee Aguilar-Andanar, and Anne Aguilar.

He was also Senator Cynthia Villar’s brother.

He was a property developer before entering public service in 1992. He then served as mayor of Las Piñas City for six terms, first from 1995 to 2004, and from 2007 to 2016.

His father Dr. Filemon Aguilar, was also a former Las Piñas mayor.

During his term, Las Piñas was recognized as one of the best-managed cities in the country, according to the city’s official website.

National and international awards, including the United Nations Award for Environmental Protection, were handed out to the city under his term.

COVID-19 Crisis: Over half a million people vaccinated in Las Piñas City

It is official! The total number of vaccinated people (both 1st dose and 2nd dose patients) in Las Piñas City has exceeded the 500,000 mark and among them are more than 200,000 who got fully vaccinated!

To be more specific, the City Government of Las Piñas announced that as of August 12, 2021, the number counted is 532,595 as total inoculation. In terms of breakdowns based on dosage, 322,147 patients were vaccinated with the first dose while 218,998 patients got vaccinated with their second dose. If you do the math, there is a discrepancy because 322,147 plus 218,998 equals 541,145 grand total.

COVID-19 Crisis: Delta variant cases in Las Piñas City counted at 24

Just as the total number of vaccinated people in Las Piñas City approaches the 500,000 mark, it was reported by the Manila Bulletin that there are 24 cases of the highly contagious Delta variant within the city confirmed.

The Las Pinas City government confirmed that there are already 24 cases of the Delta variant of COVID-19 in the city and the patients are recovering.

Dr. Julie Gonzales, City Health Office (CHO) officer, said the 24 cases of Delta variant came from seven barangays in the city. She refused to name the barangays.

Gonzales said it was initially reported that the total number of Delta variant case in the city was 26 but upon case investigation, it was found out that the two cases came from another local government unit (LGU).

She also said that the city is seeing other coronavirus disease (COVID-19) variants mutations and could not still identify if it is the Delta variant.

The CHO officer said the city is still waiting for the genome sequencing result on the new cases reported in the city.

Mayor Imelda Aguilar ordered for an intensified prevent-detect-isolate-treat-reintegration (PDITR) system and vaccination to stop the transmission of the virus.

Aguilar was also informed that hospitals in the city — the Perpetual Help Medical Center, Las Pinas General Hospital, E. Zarate Hospital, and A. Zarate Hospital have reached full capacity.

The mayor said the city government is not yet implementing granular lockdown on barangays with Delta variant cases because those afflicted were already isolated and are recovering.

COVID-19 Crisis: Las Piñas City Mayor Aguilar appeals to constituents for their full cooperation in relation to the Delta variant

Just as the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) for Metro Manila is about to take effect for two weeks, the Manila Bulletin reported recently that Las Piñas City Mayor Imelda Aguilar asked the local residents for their full cooperation in the fight against the highly infectious Delta variant which has been confirmed by the Department of Health (DOH) previously. Already there are thirteen Delta variant cases in the city according to another report by the Manila Bulletin.

Las Piñas City Mayor Imelda Aguilar has appealed for full cooperation of the residents in the implementation of health and safety measures against the spread of COVID-19 Delta variant.

Aguilar is also reminding the residents to report immediately to the City Health Office (CHO) once they have symptoms of COVID-19 so they could be given proper attention.

She said the city government is also constantly posting in its official Facebook page the health protocols that should be followed to prevent the spread of the virus.

The mayor also asked the residents to register at the city government’s “Ligtas na Las Piñero, Lahat Bakunado” vaccination program to protect themselves from any harm brought about by the virus.

Aguilar ordered the CHO to strictly implement the prevent, detect, isolate, treatment and reintegration (DPITR) plus vaccination program to keep Las Pineros free from the virus.

She said persons with symptoms of COVID-19 must give their true identities to the CHO or immediately ask the intervention of health experts once they have exposure to COVID-19 patients.

The above report ended stating that Mayor Aguilar said that city hospitals were asked to upgrade their bed capacity and increase their logistical needs at their isolation facilities in preparation for a possible Delta variant cases surge.

It should be noted that as of July 29, 2021, almost 430,000 people got vaccinated in the city. Almost 187,000 of those were fully vaccinated (2 doses). Already the national government confirmed it will supply Metro Manila local government units (LGUs) with 4,000,000 vaccine doses in connection with ECQ.

COVID-19 Crisis: Almost 430,000 vaccinated in Las Piñas City

Yesterday the City Government of Las Piñas announced that almost 430,000 people got vaccinated successfully as of July 29, 2021. To be very specific, the official count is at 428,208 in grand total.

Of the 428,208 people who got vaccinated, 241,432 were those who got injected with their first dose. 186,776 got vaccinated with their second dose which makes them fully vaccinated patients.

COVID-19 Crisis: Las Piñas City prepares for Delta variant

It is official. The Delta variant (B.1.617.2) is really here in the Philippines and this could lead to more new infections of COVID-19. What is the Delta variant? It is described by WebMD.com as follows:

The Delta variant, also known as B.1.617.2, can spread more easily, according to the CDC. The strain has mutations on the spike protein that make it easier for it to infect human cells. That means people may be more contagious if they contract the virus and more easily spread it to others. It is now the dominant strain in the U.S.

In fact, researchers have said that the Delta variant is about 50% more contagious than the Alpha variant, which was first identified in the U.K., according to The Washington Post. Alpha, also known as B.1.1.7, was already 50% more contagious than the original coronavirus first identified in China in 2019.

Public health experts estimate that the average person who gets infected with Delta spreads it to three or four other people, as compared with one or two other people through the original coronavirus strain, according to Yale Medicine. The Delta variant may also be able to escape protection from vaccines and some COVID-19 treatments, though studies are still ongoing

Las Piñas City Mayor Imelda Aguilar has ordered the strict implementation of prevent-detect-isolate-treat and reintegrate (PDITR) to ensure that the new Delta variant will not spread in the city.

According to Paul San Miguel, Public Information chief, Aguilar ordered that residents who show symptoms of COVID-19 must be isolated in one facilities while asymptomatic patients should be placed in other isolation facilities.

San Miguel said the Aguilar’s order came after the Department of Health (DOH) confirmed that the more transmissible Delta variant has entered the country.

He said the mayor wants to prevent the spread of the virus in the city and continues to appeal to residents to observe the basic health protocols like the wearing of face mask and face shield and observing physical distancing.

The Department of Health (DOH) said Pasay and Las Piñas cities are posting high COVID-19 vaccine utilization rates.

As of July 15, the DOH recorded Pasay with 98.20 percent in vaccine utilization rate followed by Las Piñas City with 95.74 percent.

Las Piñas City Mayor Imelda Aguilar, who was happy to note that Las Piñas ranked as number 2 in the vaccine utilization rate, called on residents to avail the free vaccination being offered by the government to be safe from being infected with the virus.

Aguilar is ensuring all residents that despite the delay of arrival and lack of supply of vaccines, the city government continues to conduct vaccination.

She said the commitment of every city resident to be vaccinated against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) will help the city government to immediately achieve herd immunity.

Recently the City Government of Las Piñas announced two notable achievements in the fight against COVID-19 – over 300,000 people in the city got vaccinated while the city is the 2^nd highest among local government units (LGUs) in Metro Manila with regards to vaccination utilization rates recorded.

Based on statistics counted as of July 15, 2021, a grand total of 313,045 people in the city got vaccinated. Breakdowns show that 212,510 patients were vaccinated on their first dose and the biggest group of patients who received the first dose was A4 category at 85,841. Patients who successfully got fully vaccinated with two doses totaled 100,535 and the biggest group of patients fully vaccinated was the A3 category with 44,614. Check out the official stats below…

With regards to the Metro Manila LGUs vaccination utilization rate statistics counted by the Department of Health (DOH) vaccination operations center accurate as of July 15, 2021, Las Piñas City ranked 2^nd place overall with a utilization rate of 95.74% The top LGU overall was Pasay City with 98.20% When it comes to South Metro Manila LGUs, the City of Muntinlupa was at 5^th place with 89.44% while the City of Parañaque finished 8^th overall with 85.82%. COVID-19 Crisis: 11.7 million people vaccinated nationwide

Close to twelve million people here in the Philippines have been vaccinated successfully according to the National Task Force (NTF) against COVID-19 when it issued a statement two days ago through the Philippine News Agency (PNA). To be more specific, the official count of vaccinated individuals all over the Philippines was at 11,708,029 people.

A total of 11,708,029 individuals have been vaccinated against the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) in the Philippines, the National Task Force (NTF) against Covid-19 said on Monday.

The latest NTF data shows a total of 8,839,124 individuals have received their first dose while 2,868,905 others have completed their two doses of Covid-19 vaccine as of July 4.

In the past 18 weeks of the national vaccination program, the government has reached a record high of 1,778,989 doses being administered.

The average daily vaccination rate in the last seven days is at 254,141 doses, with 1,197 average number of active reporting vaccination sites.

The NTF reported that 1,714,313 health care workers have already received their first shot of the Covid-19 vaccine while 1,156,220 are fully vaccinated.

Some 2,524,204 senior citizens under A2 category of priority groups, 2,993,197 persons with comorbidity (A3), and 1,350,979 essential sector (A4) and 256,431 indigents (A5) have received their first dose.

On the other hand, some 788,630 of A2, 897,719 of A3, 26,109 of A4, and 227 of A5 are now fully vaccinated against the disease.

Looking at the above official statistics, it is notable that more than a million healthcare workers have been fully vaccinated (two doses). There is still a long way to go before the number of fully vaccinated A4 patients (note: the workers) before reaching the million-mark. A4 patients are essential in the Philippines’ economic revival and business owners need a healthy and immune (against COVID-19) work force to make economic progress happen.

When it comes to South Metro Manila, almost a quarter-million people in Las Piñas City have been vaccinated successfully while 39% of Muntinlupa’s target population have been vaccinated. Parañaque City, meanwhile, had to temporarily halt first-dose vaccination.

COVID-19 Crisis: Almost 250,000 people in Las Piñas City successfully vaccinated

According to a very recent report by the Manila Bulletin, close to two hundred fifty thousand people in Las Piñas City were successfully vaccinated for COVID-19. To be precise, the official count as of July 3, 2021 is at 239,706 people vaccinated.

The Las Piñas City government has administered 239,706 vaccines against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) from the total 450,000 target population.

Mayor Imelda Aguilar said the city government inoculated a total of 239,706 persons belonging to the A1 (health care workers), A2 (senior citizens), A3 (adult with comorbidities), A4 (economic frontliner) and A5 (indigent sector) categories.

The City Health Office (CHO) reported on July 3 that 195,893 residents or 30.76 percent of Las Pinas population and about 43.82 percent from the 70 percent target population already received their first dose of vaccines.

Aguilar said about 43,813 residents or 6.86 percent of Las Pinas population were fully vaccinated.

The mayor said the CHO records showed that A3 category has the highest record of vaccinated with 74,649 followed by the A4 category with 73,050.

For the A5 category, the city government vaccinated a total of 3,573, she added.

The mayor then continue to call residents belonging to the A5 category to register and avail the city’s vaccination program, “Ligtas na Las Pinero, Lahat Bakunado.” The city government has already 18 vaccination sites and two more additional sites located at Barangays Manuyo and Talon 5 to accommodate the growing number of residents who wants to be vaccinated.

She said the city is committed to achieve the targeted 446,000 residents to be vaccinated out of more than 600,000 population.
